We use a/d a lot , I always have a few tins in,  I can't recall a cat ever having any problems after eating it.

He had a tin of a/d yesterday, and has had a runny bum today - but he is also on ABs, so could be either. Have given him normal cat food today to be on the safe side though.

I think it depends on the cat, petunia got diarrhoea when she had just a couple of meals of it yet can eat whiskas   :-:  It upsets Tazs tum too.

At one point the labels peeled up to show more info, im sure it had chicken livers in it....

Cheers - I can't believe a vets dont stock it as standard though!!

I hope it wont give him an upset tum, and that his thinness isn't due to illness, or it will be a lot harder to find him a home.

If you get stuck, let me know and I'll pick some up for you and shove it in the post, xx

a/d was also used on Shelby and Pingu when they were both ill, it deffo won't give an upset tum and is brilliant for building them up again after an illness etc.

I had forgotten about Dyl having it Dawn. I dont know what caused the runny bum last week, I had given them food in gravy rather than jelly, but unfortunately had to change his dry food the same day (ran out of the free samples from the vets, so he had to have what everyone else eats.) I daren't try and find out which one, as he doesn't have enough fat on him to potentially upset his tummy again, but his diet hasn't changed this weekend, yet slightly runny again. Think I will wait till he has been to the vets though, as I only have one tin in, and the rescue's vet dont always stock it, but wont have time to go to my vets cos of going to the rescues' vet!! Will try and post pics showing how thin he still is after just over 2 weeks here - hope the bloods dont show it is illness related.
CS - the chicken was purely cos he is having a dental, so more for a light meal after an anaesthetic.

As far as I'm aware, a/d is like Complan for humans. A small amount of a/d will give the cat all the nutrients he needs. If ever the cats at the shelter are sick and have poor appetites, we give them a/d to boost them back to health. IMHO I'd stick to that rather than the chicken.

Whatever you decide to feed him though, stick to it for a good while before changing.

I made the mistake of mixing food when I first had Smokey, thinking it would be more exciting for him. He, like many cats who've been moved from place to place, had a dicky tummy.

It has settled down now but both him and Josh eat RC Sensible 33 and there hasn't been a tummy incident in ages!

Good luck little Rolo, get well soon xx

The a/d will be fine Des, Dylan had lots of tummy problems if you remember when he was a baby and he ended up on a/d for a few weeks.  As Gill has mentioned, it's for convalescing cats so won't upset the tummy.  Good luck with Rolo and I think you're doing the right thing putting him on a/d.

I hope so, but it is the high protein that makes me curious - and Hills are poor at labelling, it tells you what it does in various languages, but no ingredients at all!!

A/D advice
« Reply #1 on: November 11, 2007, 18:23:42 PM »
After just over 2 weeks, Rolo hasn't put much weight on, and after an overnight stay, I am even more concerned, he looks worse than he did when I left yesterday morning, so not sure what my neighbours fed him!! I am debating putting him on a/d, but when I changed his food last week, he had a really poorly tum, and he has had a slightly dodgy tum while I have been away, so is having RC Sensitivity tonight. Would a/d make his poorly tum worse, or could it help? As he is so thin, I dont want to risk giving him anything that could make it worse, as he doesn't have the reserves. I have tons of treats in, and nice fishy foods, but daren't give them to him. He is being dropped off at the vets tomorrow night ready for his dental Tues mornign, and fortunately, due to his age, the vets are insisting on a blood test before they do the op, so at least if it is due to illness (he does seem to be drinking a lot, but then he prefers his dry food to wet anyway), we will know on Tues. I have a chicken fillet in the freezer for him after his dental, hope he likes it more than the fish they had for Bonfire night!!
