Yeah, I emailed Ferplast and got a reply .... they said it had never happened before, and that once I'd taken it back to PAH they would ask them to send it back to them to check.

The weird thing is that now I can't open the top from the bottom at all, even with the catches undone, so I'm now wondering if the little lugs weren't engaged when I bought it?  Certainly seemed to be ok when I checked it before we set off   Maybe they weren't properly engaged, but looked like they were? However, the catches are most definitely not what they should be, my other carrier's front catches are really stiff and engage very firmly.  I'm beginning to suspect that the carrier got bashed or something before I bought it .

So it wasnt a crappy cheap one either, terrible, just imagine if that happened at the vets carpark.  >:( >:( >:(   I would also write to the manufacturers.
I have 2 of those types and only put small cats in even tho my clips are stiff, i prefer to use a wire basket.

This is a good post to remind everyone to check your basket everytime you use it.

Yikes, that's not good.  It doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened if it had cracked open on the walk from the car to the vets instead of outside your house.  You defo deserve the wine!

What type of carrier is it?  Did the plastic literally break or  did it come apart where the two parts are joined together like the top and bottom shell?

I know!  REALLY scary to think it could have happened between the car and the vet - the vet is about 2 miles from my house, with extremely busy traffic all about.  I'm just thankful that it happened close to home.

The carrier is the top-opening Ferplast Atlas 20 from PAH.  It didn't really break, as such, but the clips on both sides at the front are really loose - it takes nothing to pull the top from the bottom.  Just wish I'd discovered that before I took Sabby out in it.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and support :)

I have this paranoia that Lexy will have the same horror so always carry her carrier in my arms. Get some right strange looks but the other thoughts is just not worth thinking about.

Good to know I am not the only one who do this... ;D  Initially I held it this way because Oliver doesn't tolerate being dangled, but the last time I was also thinking it has now a legit explanation, safety precaution!  ;)

OMG how terrifying. I would have pink kittens if that happened to me. Lucky he made it home ok, and glad he has got over his fright. You may need to leave the new cage in the house for a few weeks so he is able to reassure himself it is safe..

OMG poor sabby and poor you ... thank god he made it across the road and back home safely.

I remember when Rossi escaped from my carrier ... she pushed against the door and it fell open ... I remember standing on the street and in slow motion watching Rossi tear off down my street straight towards the main road at the end!!!!!!  My heart stopped and I seemed to be frozen to the spot ... soooooo scary!

Oh noooooo, that is horrible and has really chilled me - like Helen said, if Sabby had escaped at the vet's ... well, it doesn't bear thinking about.  What a nightmare.  BIG complaint in order, I think! >:(

Phew, what a relief and I am so glad Sabby is safely back home.  I was just thinking I might have to replace the cat carrier, as it says it is designed for cats up to 5kg and Oliver is already 5kg and perhaps a little more.  The last time I took him out to the vet I carried the cage in my arms though, as Oliver can't stand the feel of being dangled in the air.  It is just too scary a thought to have him getting out of the cage in the middle of the mad traffic around our house, especially him being an indoor boy!!  There is no way I can afford to take any chance, and I will have to do all the security check when I get another bigger cat carrier!!

So there we were, all prepared to go for our annual check up and jabs.  I'd bought Sabby a new carrier from PAH as he'd got far too big to share with the girls.  He'd fallen in love with it, and spend most of his time inside it.  So we get out the front door, and cross the busy, wide main road at the front of my house - unusually I'd had to park on the opposite side.  Just then ... CRACK! .... and Sabby's carrier collapsed and Sabby sprang out, and high-tailed it right across the main road!  I was soooo scared for him!  It was dark and raining ... just not what was needed.

I staggered back across the road with the girls and a now-empty carrier, dashed into the house and out the back, to see, thankfully, that Sabby had beaten me to it.  But would he come in?  Nope!  So I had to leave him there in the dark, and head off to the vets with just the girls.  I'm just gratified that Sabby seemed to know the way home, even though he never goes on the main road.  Thankfully, once I got back, I found Sabby in the garden ... he had declined to come in through the open catflap, it would seem.  However, the last pouch of Whiskas did the trick (hehehe!) and now he's safely curled up next to the radiator, none the worse for wear.  Think I put on a few years though!

Anyway, it's a trip to PAH to get my money back in exchange for a broken cat carrier and a few well-chosen words!  It's not even like Sabby's a monster cat, or anything!  Sure, he's chunky (muscley), but he's not fat, and he's only slightly on the large size.

So hey ... at least the good news is that the vet described the girls as in 'absolutely beautiful condition', and Shanti as 'very pretty'!  Which, of course, she is!  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:  And they both got a nice clean bill of health :)

Phew!  ... gonna crack open that bottle of red now!  I need it!
