My two have tags on their collars saying 'microchip - scan me' so if one of them is found and is still wearing their collar, at least someone knows to scan them properly even if the chip has moved.

I'm still considering getting one of those microchip cat flaps, I guess that's a good way of knowing regularly that the chip is still ok!

a quick thought - if you can afford to get a comprehensive policy that offers a lifetime condition cover (ie doesn't expire 1 yr after commencement of treatment) I've found that really helps if they get an ongoing med condition which costs money. Another tip is to check for exclusions eg most cos won't pay for specialist prescription food. I found asking the vet's nurse who does the claims who pays and who doesn't was quite helpful too. With Leo your premiums should be quite low as he's young and carefree (and long may that last!).

Lisa i presume Cody was chipped in the normal place around or between the shoulder blades and his tracked slightly down his right should towards his right leg, It was far more noticable in his first year of life when he had abit less muscle mass but i can still feel it (actually quite theraputic to sit and play with it

) It hasnt moved from that location so i wouldnt worry unduly .

I don't have any experience with any insurance companies, Ktty was with argos and im now obviously claiming for her they were very quick at sending a claims form it got here next day the claim form hasnt been sent away yet as the lady at the vets was on holiday untill today,
My 2 kittens are with axa because of the price and it seems quita a good policy.

Yes the amount of excess is different and also what they offer and terms and conditions. It maybe you get a lot more cover with Petplan but I think they are expensive and that excess is high.

Look at M&S, AXA, the latter underwrites the former and tomorrow I am telling M&S to

off and moving to AXA just cos of the difference in rates.

We dont know much about AXA in terms of payout speed but I just cant afford M&S anymore.

When you do comparisons you need to make a chart and put all the important to you things on there and then see which one you think you want to use.

Make sure you you get cover of an amount each year and petplan and the other two do this.

I cannot see any difference in terms and conditions for M&S and AXA, just the cost!

Swampy's feels just like that too so it's probably the microchip as they are that sort of shape. You could take Mr Leo down and ask the vet's nurse to scan where the 'fuse' is without paying, couldn't you? It will go BEEP if it's the chip

Don't know about insurance but would say always read the small print and the excess policy. Have heard reasonable things about M&S but you could check moneysavingexpert.com for ideas and then ring up for quotes?

Any vet bills below £80 , you have to pay for and any over that amount, you have to pay the first £80.................I knew I didnt like petplan for a reason

I was going to ask about Insurance. I will be going with the most expensive cover with Pet Plan. If Leo was to need treatment below £80 (What they charge for excess) would it be covered by the insurance or is it anything there or above the £80 ?

I would ask a vet to check it out, a few weeks ago we took in a cat (via this site actually) and I felt an unusual something. I took the little one to the vets and apparently it was a piece of bone unique to that cat.

Not necessarily, there will always be exceptions to the rule and the odd one may migrate. Also you cannot be 100% sure it is the chip you can feel.

I can feel Swampy's chip as when it migrated, it also moved nearer to the surface. I contacted the manufacturer (it's American though, think they are different here, was fitted in SA) who said they can withstand quite a bit of bashing. I was worried that it could fail following a bash in a violent cat game. The rescue orgs and vets in France said the same as Ela, that animals get scanned all over to locate a chip, especially I reckon if the animal looks well cared for like your Leo! Anyhow it was funny in the end because the loony South African who supplies the chips told me he'd fitted 4 chips into his own leg and then hit them with a hammer to see if they got damaged and failed (ahem

). Swamp's had a relocated chip since 2004 and it has (touch wood) eventually stopped migrating. Sometimes the batteries aren't the newest in scanners and there's a problem reading chips, but generally all the new scanners seem very sensitive and can read all intl chips too. When I came back from France, Max's chip wouldn't read the first time and his ID tag (metal) was on the back of his neck at the time, so probably blocked the signal. A moment's pure adrenalin for Max's mum

You could ask the manufacturer (who may possibly not be as mad as the South African bloke) if they think there's a problem with the chip migrating near the surface?

It is unusual for chips to migrate nowadays as usually the body tissue entwines in the microscopic pores of the chip. However, vets and rescue scan the whole body if they cannot find one in the neck area.

I think I can feel it coz he is a kitten with not allot of body fat at the mo.. he is going through that lanky stage kittens get to..

I dont think I will ever travel anywhere with him but all the same it worries me that if he ever got out the vet wouldnt pick up the microchip. That would then mean it was all a waste of time.. I wonder how sensitive the scanners are..

Im going to mention this to my vet when I get him done..

We have to take in stray dogs at the Police Station when the dog warden is off, took one in yesterday and when the owner rang in for him she was adamant he was chipped, I had scanned him all over - top of head, neck, shoulders, down legs, halfway along his back but nothing came up.

Just out of interest Lisa how come you can feel his chip, I'm always pawing over the boys and have never felt anything in that area.

just popped into Purrs on my way to bed

and saw this. Is Leo ever likely to travel with you anywhere where he needs a pet passport cos if so, don't fit a second chip as DEFRA don't allow that. His microchip is the crucial part of his passport, blood results, everything. If he has 2, it would be a bit tricky if the 'wrong' one got scanned. If you think Leo's likely to be a travel boy, email DEFRA and ask them what to do. However I'm not sure that it's such a big problem if it's moved (depending on where it ends up!). I think/would hope that most vets or orgs scan not just between the shoulders but the whole thorax area as chips move quite often. Swampy's is on his rhs - moved quite a way despite him being an adult. The 'guaranteed non migrating technology' is a load of rubbish.
When I asked the french vet, he said the original chip would have to be surgically removed to allow for another go and it may happen again

Yes I would be happier with a new chip in the correct place.. But then the old one will have to be removed as he will have 2 ID numbers ! But then If they were both in my name then I suppose it would be ok ?

1st his kink, then his mole we were told about the day we got him that I will have to pay to get removed, then the fleas, now this which im hoping won't cost excessive amounts of ££ if needs to be corrected what with the redundancy

Mind you im going with the highest amount of cover with Petplan..

When i worked at the cattery i had to scan every cat that came in - you would be surprised where i located some chips - and sometimes it would take me 2 or 3 goes to find it !
The only thing that would worry me about Leo's chip having moved is that if anything ever happened to him the person scanning him might not find his chip. (they might just scan quickly over the usual place)

They can migrate when done in fatty adults too. I think it depends on the cats body response the same as humans when they get a piercing, some people reject everything others dont.

I asked my vet about this and he said that if they are put in the corect place then they should not move but sometimes do if they have been done when the cat it too young/small.

Dont know if this is right, just what he said.

When Rascal had her booster three different vets couldn't find her chip and she had to be redone.

They quite often move .... nothing to worry about. It's best to get them checked annually when you go to the vet just to make sure the scanner picks it up.

I felt Leos Micro-chip today & its not where is was when we got him

Where exactly should they be positioned ? Leos has slid right the way down the left hand side by his ribs

Should I be worried & will I have to get it removed & re-done ?
