Bought some freesias from M&S and they had a warning: could be dangerous to pets on the label so chucked them. Are they the lily family? I'd bought them lots of times before but they'd never been munched. I don't remember ever seeing a warning label before either.
Same with alstromeria. When I first got Max he bit the head off a whole vase of daffodils (also dangerous flowers apparently) but luckily didn't eat them. I hope other flower retailers also label the flowers that are dangerous or even mildly dangerous as that would be a big help and would save lives.

I spared my neigbour the details Mark. Didn't want her to feel upset.. it was my fault for not knowing & taking care. Couldnt let her know that it cost me over £300 in vets fees... could I???

I always had Lilies until last year. They were theonly flower I really like. The times I had them 1/2 sticking out of the bin is scary. I just buy "mums" now

I lost my little Toffee last November after he ate a lilly leaf. Even though he brought it back he was put to sleep with renal failure. These flowers were bought for me by my neighbour for looking after her cat & even though what I thought was out of reach, obviously weren't!
A warning for lilly lovers!

Yep, me too, I used to have lilies in pots in the garden for years, as well as having cats, before I knew about how dangerous they were.

This link is great. I have owned cats for 5 years, my hubby grew up with a house full of them and neither of us knew about lillies. They are my fav flowers and I have them in pots in the garden and have regularly had them in the house. Thank goodness by good luck the cats did not go near them.

He wasn't exhibiting any symptoms but was taken to the vets today just to be on the safe side. Apparantly he has two ulcers on his tongue, poor lad! Ember apparantly was very sympathetic and gave him a whole day off playing and cuddled him.

Very glad Indie is okay.

Got flowers from friends a few weeks ago and as soon as I put them in a vase the cats started trying to eat them so to be safe I threw them out.

They're weren't any lilies but roses, carnations, babies breath and a few other things I couldn't identify.

Plus, my husband and I are allergic!

Just called my cousin. Apparantly they noticed he had pollen on him quickly enough. He is currently involved in a mad half hour with Ember....phew!

OH was very offended recently when he bought me lillies and I asked him to take them away again ... would be good to warn him of any other potential hazards ... mind you, that's assuming he ever wants to buy me flowers again!!

So few folks know about lilies, but several of the major supermarkets are now putting warning labels on their flowers, which is a step in the right direction. We on Purrs can help to spread the word, I think.

Thanks. I've just called them back with info I found from looking it up and my cousin phoned the vet. She's just fed the cats and he's eating apparantly so they're just going to see if he keeps his food down, as the vet advised. My poor cousin is from what I can tell verging on hysterical and the flowers have ALL been put in the bin.

Hope Indie is ok, my cat Jet is a nightmare with flowers always brushing up against them, he once went into a neighbours garden and rubbed against a lilly they had, he came home with pollen on his nose i was so worried, luckily he'd just rubbed against it and not ingested anything!!!

Signs of Lily Poisoning
The first signs of toxicity are vomiting, depression and loss of appetite. The onset is usually within 2 hours, and may subside by 12 hours. Although an affected cat is likely to remain depressed, the patient may appear to improve, briefly (with or without symptomatic treatment) as the gastrointestinal signs abate. It is likely, however, that acute renal failure will develop within 24 to 72 hour at which time the cat will become critically ill. At this time the patient may drink much more than usual, or become extremely dehydrated. Your vet might feel painful, enlarged kidneys on physical examination at this stage. If untreated, cats die in 3 to 7 days.

My uncle has just called me and asked the symptoms for a cat ingesting lilies. My cousin was bought some flowers to cheer her up the other day and unfortunately her partner and she were unaware of the dangers of lilies until we were chatting on the phone. Indie had a bit of yellow on her nose and she's terrified its pollen. What are the immediate symptoms?
