Mind you we always laughed about this (and also handed out info sheets)  Its normally the first thing and sometimes the only thing doctors think about when the actual incidence of anyone contracting tetany from a scratch or bite is negligable, however "cat scratch fever"  can result more often than not but docs dont take it seriously enough and sometimes prefer to NOT give antibiotics  >:(   Any serious and or deep scratches and bites are always best treated with antibiotics.

When Magpie bit me I was given a fact sheet to take with me to A&E (it was quite a bad bite) explaining the main risks of a cat bite.  The vet had also spoken the nurse in charge at A&E so that I could queue jump (cos Magpie was so ill)  ;D

the injection itself is like any other, but be warned it does give you a "dead arm" for a day or two  :'(

I believe those places don't have comic book stores and thus my OH will never spend the cash to go.

When I go back to the doctors for everything else I'll ask about the shot, though I won't look forward to it!

no you wouldnt have needed it to come here, and we dont need it to go to states but for the likes of caribbean , dominican etc etc hols you need it.  I'd have thought so for more exotic places too.

Ireland is same as here  ;D

you should make sure you are covered no matter what involvement with animals you have.  Have you holidayed abroad ?? most places require tetanus before travelling i think (excluding states ha ha)

Well I came from the States to the UK and never had to give medical history or anything.

I only go to the US and Dublin and they aren't too picky ;)

everyone should make sure their tetanus vaccines are up to date.

28 and I don't remember every having a tetanus shot.

I've worked with cats and Lirael has bit me quite a few times breaking skin (she play bites then pulls at you, not realising the skin is actually attached).

Guess I really should ask the doctors to administer one...

Sasha if it was quite minor you'll probably get off with it.

I had my first tetanus jabs when I was about 3 or 4 cos was bitten badly by a horse that I was feeding.................sigh

The last booster was after.................now keep the smirk of your faces................I was bitten by a cactus in B&Q. I picked it up and it fell over on my hand and my thumb was really painful and then started swelling.

I rang NHS direct and they said to go to the nearest pop-in place, cant remeber what they were called but much better than A&E but I thought nooooo its just a cactus prickle so went to doctor and nurse said noooooooooo go to that place that NHS Direct told me grrrrrrrrrrrr.

I had a tetanus after my first cat bit me (my own fault) and it got infected, but I have only had 2 infected bites in 5 years, I personally would use dettol or something on it and monitor it, I dont like having to take antibiotics unless I have to.
Please spay your cat

Hope everything's okay Cosmic.

Some good sound advice here, but try not to worry too much.

Until around 7 years ago, I'd never had a tetanus jab in my life.  I used to do volunteer work at our local cat and dog shelter (back in the late seventies) and was scratched and bitten three or four times, but luckily never came to any serious harm.  In those days it was "whack a bit of dettol on and it'll be fine."  And it was!  :evillaugh:

Me Mum didn't believe in putting plasters on either - "let the air get to it" she'd say,  although where you're working day to day with the cats it's a good idea to keep it covered to keep it clean.

Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't show signs of infection.  (Then again, you're more likely to pick something nasty up from a trip to hospital these days!)

I have an up to date tetanus but Kylie bit my hand deeply at thevets a few years ago and my hand swelled up like a balloon. I rang NHS direct and they advised A&E. I went to the doctor 1st thing the next morning instead and they gave me steroid cream to put on it.

DO NOT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE

I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it.  Mark Twain

Anybody who has animals or does gardening should be uptodate with tetanus jabs.

Quite right too, CP advise all fosterers to have tetanus jabs and keep them up to date, although thankfully it is now only every 10 yrs.

I would suspect that if the skin has been broken by the cats teeth you certainly should be taking medical advise cos cats bites can do some nasty things to you.........just think what they do to other cats!! You would be straight off to the vets for antibiotics.

Keep a close eye on it.  I agree with Reynard that antibiotics are more likely to be what you need than a tetanus jab.  When Magpie bit me at the vets when he was ill they sent me to A&E.  They said that when a cat bites them they just take a course of antibiotics but they couldn't give me antibiotics.  They also said that whoever saw me at A&E would probably give me a tetanus booster but tetanus was not really a risk and the bacteria in their mouths was more of a threat.

i dont think iv ever had a tetnus is it really nessisary what might happen to me

I am really alarmed by what you've just said. Does your employer display a valid Employee Liability Insurance Certificate? (They have to be law!) Where you given a copy of their Health and Safety policy? Have you seen their Risk Assesment report?

I would think it's a requirement of their insurance that employees are vacinated against certain illnesses. If it is a requirement, and you say you're not vacinated, then their insurace isn't valid.

For pity's sake...  :-[

Sasha, go to A&E and get a course of antibiotics.

If you leave a cat bite that's broken the skin, you *will* get blood poisoning as a cat's mouth is full of some very nasty germs. Better be safe than sorry.

I would think it's compulsory to have tetanus, etc., if you work in an environment like that...

I take it you have had a tetnus in the last 10yrs, if you have just keep it clean and covered you should be ok
