Sorry to hear this Ela, what a shame, poor Everweddy. At least he was well looked after and not outside on his own suffering.

It's a bit of a shock really asI remember him being quite young? I guess I've been fortunate in that the FIV babes I've lost have all been of an older age.

Thats so sad, was it related to his fiv?

Some of his problems were what we occasionally see in FIV cats. Unfortunately he was not responding to treatment as he should. He was due an operation today but unfortunately he deteriorated very quickly and the kindest thing to do  was let him join those we have loved and lost at Rainbow Bridge.

We do home quite a few FIV cats a year, in fact during Jan this year we homed more FIV cats than 'normal' cats.

We did offer to take him as a foster on a while back but at the time someone was interested in him - I wasn't particularly good at following it up as just assumed it was in the pipeline - I am guessing that fell through - Well done to you!

I may be totally wrong here - but can't you get cats vaccinated against FIV? Surely if all the cats in a household were FIV vaccinated, homing an FIV+ cat would not be such an issue?

There is no injection available in the UK for FIV, only FeLV.

That's probably what I was thinking of - that's the leukaemia one, isn't it? Ooops, my bad! :-[ It's a pity, because although FIV cats can have perfectly normal, happy lives, it's such a shame that FIV can't be prevented. Good luck to Everweddy - I've seen his pic and he's a lovely gingerbread boy :Luv: :Luv: Whoever takes him on will be lucky to be owned by such a special boy :)

There isn't an FIV vaccine in the UK, and it isn't widely used in the US either, as there isn't a test to differentiate between being vaccinated against it and having hte disease, so until there is, there is no way I would use one. Also, no vaccines are 100% (the FeLV is 85%), so there could still be issues.

I keep looking at the appeal and wanting to do something but you aren't supposed to mix FIV cats with cats that aren't infected are you?
You could already have a fiv cat having taken in unwanted adults!

Hmmmm...three out of the four I have now were kittens when I got them, so I know whether they've been in serious fights or not. (They've definately never come back with big bites!) and Old Mog was spayed when I got her - does that mean the chances of them having FIV are lower? (I really need to read up on this. :shy:) Parsley was also spayed when I got her, so have no idea if she'd ever been in any disputes!

I'm really glad some rescues do take in these cats, Ela. My uncle lives on a busy road and has already decided that when he gets one it will obviously be an indoor cat, so I'm encouraging him to get an FIV positive cat!

Glad that he has a chance of a good home, fingers crossed for him. I personally would home an FIV+ with mine, Molly isn't a fighter, my problem is outdoor access, so it is somethign for the future when I have a garden.

I think if your cats go out you can never be sure, unless they are tested. Of course many of the FIV look so well and thier owners have not a clue.

Some people do, also if everyone in the country had all their cats tested I think quite a few would be in for a surprise. Having said that I personally would not mix them nor do we home where there are other cats unless we know they are FIV+. I know with a neutered tom the chances of passing it on are a very small percent but I personally and not willing to take a chance on my cats no matter how small the odds. That does not stop me from doing everything I can to help the FIV cats, in fact it was my idea for our branch to have our FIV 'safe haven'

You could already have a fiv cat having taken in unwanted adults! If the cats didnt fight and i had a space, i would let a fiv cat live with mine. It takes a deep bite to transmit the virus, which is why its most common in entire males  :(

Someone said on cat chat theres 3 parts to fiv status, positive, negative and untested.
UK pet owners would have a shock if all the cats were tested!
