We have a drinkwell and it is switched on 24/7 and been working for amost 2 years now. It does get scaly and dirty so needs a good scrub every week or so. It drives me mad when the water gets low as it makes a gushing sound.

the scale would build up on the plastic and also the pump would get a bit scaly.
Fortunately in our area we do not have that problem with the water. I know in some areas it it very bad.

When I had one plugged in I did - I found that if I switched it off for a while the scale would build up on the plastic and also the pump would get a bit scaly.
