Title: Lying Public Angelica not good
Post by: Teresa Pawcats on August 05, 2007, 10:05:04 AM
Earlier in the week I had a call from a woman to say she had found 4 kittens under a bush,I told her they would have a mother cat around and to keep an eye out until I arrived with a trap approx 1 hours drive away. Her response was to tell me the kittens did NOT have a mother they had been dumped in a bag under the bushes. I mistrusted this woman suspecting her own cat was mother. I arrived at the place to find the 4 kittens in womans living room with faeces and urine over them, they certainly looked like they had not had an attention for a while. I asked to see the womans cat which turned out to be a kitten definately not mother to these. She had been trying to feed Whiskas milk unsuccessfully. With no sign of any possible mother I took the kittens home as they urgently needed fluids and cleaning up.
On Friday afternoon I had a phone call from a man accusing me of stealing kittens, turns out there was a feral mum in the next street that he was feeding and her kittens had been stolen. We rushed back with a trap but mother cat wouldnt go in far enough, even tried to tempt her by showing her her hungry kittens; once she saw the kittens she ran off;we had gone beyond the point of re introducing, I suspect the woman had taken the kittens quite some time before she phoned me.
Mum will be trapped in a week and spayed and the kittens are being handreared, all so needless I would have preferred to take the mother and allow her the pleasure of her babies.

Modifyed to add the kittens were only 3 days old.
Babies are doing ok, but I so hope the lying woman gets her just desserts

At least the kittens are now safe. We've just created a 'hand over' form , so that people have to sign as being the legal owner of the cat or that the cat is a stray. Do you use anything like that? Its so new I haven't used it yet (forgot yesterday when we went to pick up a cat).

I have a bad feeling about this group of cats I offered to take in including a mum ans some 4 week old kittens. I emailed to say that I could only take them in up to midday sat and received a reply to 'yes please take them in I can't aford to keep them' at 1pm. I replied asking for a phone number and address and have not yet heard anything back.
I half suspect she is trying to sell the kittens - in fact there was an ad in yesterdays paper - maybe I will phone later.
I have no reason to suspect this is not on the level but have so many alarm bells ringing and I don't know why!

;we had gone beyond the point of re introducing, I suspect

Hope you don't mind me asking but why would that be?  We have loads of similar cases both feral and 'normal' especially at this time of year, some have been almost a week before mum has been trapped and in one case much longer, however I cannot remember a single case where the reintroduction has not worked out. Although sometimes we have needed to top up the milk supply at least mum is washing and keeping the little ones warm and teaching them lifes skills.

It is that good old rescue gut feeling. ;D

With Cats Protection every cat has to be legally signed in and then on the form there are spaces to write all treatments given and dates. Also in this way you have a full record for when the little one is re-homed on or indeed if sadly it had to come back into care at any time.

Ela if I could have reunited mum and babies it would have been done and believe me we tried very hard even getting babies to cry out,if that cat is the mother she is not interested, the kittens were in poor condition, dehydratied with diarrhoea and unwashed at the end of the day I had to make a decision; at least I tried certain other groups were asked to help while cat was pregnant and declined.
Signing over forms - yes I have them, everything here is done properly paperwork, bank account, proper isolation facilities ; however its rare for me to visit a home to pick up unwanted cats; I take mainly the desperate cases that others have already refused genuine strays and ferals.
Its a pity all CP branches dont work to your high standards because I have had to deal with several ferals lately that CP have been and taken the kittens and left the mothers to get pregnant again. In fact that reminds me I still have one to trap where CP only took kittens a couple of weeks back.
We can all but do our best and if anyone can do it better then Please get out there in the field and do it.

Possibly if mum had been able to be trapped then it mght have been abit more hopeful. however as she was too shrewd for that to happen immediately you couldnt have left such young babies when they'd already been away from mum for a couple of days..Unfortunately her milk supply would more than likely have been very poor as it hadnt been given the chance of coming in properly if that woman took the kittens away before proper milk was coming in (lets hope they actually managed to get some colostrum)

That is a disgrace they should be ashamed of themselves. I will contact CP HQ and ask them to put something in the next Cat News about this.

That is the problem there are too many people thinking about helping but not enough doing any more than thinking. In other words gunners but never taking aim and firing

I think in this case however, the woman who phoned you added to the problem and also if she did remove them from mum or where mum had left them she put their lives ar risk. What she should have done is report a mum with kittens living outside and then leave the rescue to decide the best course of action.

Message I have sent to CP HQ:-

I go onto a cat forum that has almost 800 members, some are CP volunteers and also many other rescues are represented. Occasionally there is something about CP that is not too complementary or simply untrue and I try to put CP stance on things and the reasoning behind it. However, I find myself being unable to defend where it is said the CP  have removed kittens from feral mums (on more than one occasion and maybe different branches) but left mum and not bothered to go and trap her  to have her spayed.  This in my opinion is indefensible. I wonder of something could be put in the next Branch Circular stating that it is imperative the mums of any kittens taken must be trapped and spayed. Even if it means mum is returned to site after recovery. I must say we in Chesterfield would go on to trap every cat in the colony and no we don't have a lot of volunteers, but the sense to know that the cat population will never decrease if we do not neuter and spay all the ferals and strays and pets cats come to that. We know that cats will never die out as there are to many irresponsible people for that. However, by leaving ferals that we know about we are also being irresponsible.

I had this a while ago with the CP leaving a feral mum  >:(  >:(  I had a phone call from a company and they'd found some kittens in one of the containers after the weekend and no mum and she had no access in.  The guy had already handled them when he phoned me, I asked him to put them outside in a box and hopefully their crying would bring mum back.  She hadn't had access to them since the Friday night, this was now Monday.........it was a nice day, and sure enough within minutes mum had appeared, took one of the kittens out and placed it under a portacabin.  I was on my up there but the guy had phoned CP prior and they'd told him they weren't sure when they could go out.  When I got there, CP had arrived and surprise surprise, they had now taken all the kittens including the one mum had rescued  >:(  >:(  Rather than giving her time to collect all her babies and get them safe, they couldn't be :censored: basically.  Mum typically scarpered which was to be expected when they grabbed a baby from next to her.  I was so angry I did phone up and give them a  :censored:  Their excuse was that there was nowhere safe for mum to retreat to with babies, which was a load of old cobblers.  The place was full of portacabins and if they'd have been patient, mum would have come out with the temptation of food and they could then have got the babies and mum and they could all be reunited.  This always upsets me when I hear of this happening, I have heard mums calling for their little ones when I've been trapping, and the sound is pitiful  :'(

T, if possible, I would still try to attempt to get mum if the guy is happy with this.......I may be able to get someone in that area that could give it a go, xxx

Sorry this thread was not meant to start a row.
Truth is I am so worried and tired I took exeption to one of the replies and got annoyed which I shouldn`t have done.
For this I am sorry.
For the sake of the cats lets keep this friendly.
I am now off to vets for emergency and feel bad enough about all thats gone on.
I may not seem it but I am human like everyone else and right now I`m cracking under the strain

Don't feel bad hopefully  some good will come out of it, and lessond learned. I find the problem often is the CP send advice on how do do things correctly to the Co-ordinaters but unfortunately some Co-ordinators do not pass on that information. (Although a lot of it is common sense and they should know anyway). I have noticed during the time I have been on here comments made by fosters and I know CP do not work that way and that the branch  Co-ordinator has obviously not ensured all volunteers know CP policy and any new advice.

Teresa, dont be daft, hun,    there is no row here that I can see.

I think we see these spectres when we are tired.  As the late, great Dave Allen would have said "May your God go with you" (you know why I choose to put it like that )

T def no row seen here hun and thats' what this forum is here for, for you wonderful angels in rescue to let off steam when you need to and for us lot to support you as much as we can by fundraising and listening and anything we can do to help.  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Mags will split this thread as ya requested hun so you have a sep one re the fundraising ideas. Have the new spilt thread renamed it as fundraising ideas. If ya want that changed, pm me hun.  :Luv:
I think it's brill you are trying to help rescues more and more fool them in your area if they won't take that help.

I would def be very interested in any fundraising ideas as we are planning regular small ones like the cat show a year (hopefully 4 in a year) together with the annual Purrs printed project, Purrs xmas auction and shop and grateful for any ideas for the small fund raisers we can do on Purrs say with a £1 an entry.

Guess I had a bit too much steam .
One of the babies little Angelica is not thriving like the other 3 and is very difficult to feed, vet thinks her kidneys may be failing due to being dehydrated when I got her. I have been warned I`ll probably lose her and I just dont cope with failure.

Sadly none of these have had the best start in life but they've got a fighting chance now they are in safe hands.   One of the little one's I took didn't make it, probably the same thing as they'd gone a day with virtually nothing, one of the others is iffy as well so again, it's god will and a case of wait and see.  The 2 the lady took have also died but they died early yesterday.......so very sad as they hadn't even started their lives and already, it's been snatched away.  I'll be thinking of Angelica who is absolutely gorgeous I might add, and fingers crossed she'll make it, xxxx

... I just dont cope with failure.

And that's one word I would so not associate with you....failure.  :) Teresa, unfortunately you can't save everything and sometimes things just happen. Don't get me wrong, if I were rearing kittens and one of them didn't make it I'd be the same. But then my rational, level headed partner would tell me I'd tried my best and that's all anyone can do! (Hmm....what WOULD I do without the voice of reason!)

 Sending you AND Dawn a hug because you've both worked your socks off these last few days and I would imagine it's taking its toll.

That would not be considered failure, it would be considered giving the little one a chance and in-spite of the vets and your best efforts if the little once does not make it, that is not your fault. At least the little one would have lost its life in a nice warm, comfy environment and loved.

Been back to vet with Angelica this morning,Andy is concerned about the kidneys but says to test on a baby so tiny can be very traumatic,so we are not going to do that just yet. He watched me trying to feed her and says that sometimes there is like a small band within the oesophagus which restricts the passage of food if this is the case they die at weaning time. He gave me the choice of PTS or fight on and wait and see,as neither is a definate diagnosis and she is not suffering we fight on and pray .Touch wood her brothers and sister are thriving thus far.

As she is not suffering I think you have made the right choice, then should the worst happen you will know that you did everything possible. Had you decided to let her go without a fight there many have always   been the thought in your mind, could have, would have,  should have.

Just fed them and managed to get 3ml into her,her siblings take 7-8 ml. I can feel a tiny pea shaped lump am sure it is her kidney and its enlarged. Vet visiting me tomorrow to do mass 2nd half vaccinations and check  all the cats so will find out then. Thinking positive that she will still be here.
I want my little one to open her eyes for the first time and see what a wonderful world shes got to stay around for.

Am really pleased with the progress Angelica is making;she just managed a massive 8ml could be due to the fact she only took 5ml at 5am and also that we managed to pass 2 tiny peanut sized poops. She is such a clever little one. Her sister Eugenie is now taking 10ml and brother Pushkin 12ml but they are twice her weight so she has a lot of catching up to do.  :)

Another good day for Angelica,Eugenie and Pushkin.
Aunty Claire came today and said they have grown so that cheered me; Claire has been quite disgusted at what I call Poo divining  (for anyone who has never handreared one has to stimulate kittens to express contents of bowel and bladder) Little Angelica produced 3 tiny peanut sized lumps which I was displaying with pride; I`m not really obsessed with poop but those little lumps told me volumes about the improvement in our little girl.
Heres todays pics

they are so cute - i hand raised a puppy once and had a small pouch I could wear under my blouse to take the puppy to work with me. Fortunately I worked in a hospital at the time so had endless supplies of incontinence pads to line the pouch. The puppy's movements under my blouse took some explaining to some of our more elderly patients, but he thrived. I well remember the joys of tummy/bottom massages for that elusive poo. especially fun at three in the morning I find.

This gorgeous trio continue to make good progress, Angelica is taking almost as much food as her sister Eugenie, whereas Pushkin devours enough to feed an army. They have little roll on their back playtimes now and at 15 days are beginning to resemble kittens. Hopefully its a big light I see at the end of a very long tunnel

Went to bed at midnight, kittens feed was due at 2.30 am, woke at 1.30 kittens still sleeping so decided to have an extra half hour. I am a terrible bad meowmy I slept till 4.45 am ,but then so did the kittens; think maybe I can ease off a little on the night feeds if they continue to make such progress.
Eugenie and Pushkin are little tubbies, Angelica is feeding well  :)

Andy (vet) was delighted with the progress made but has warned they are not out of the woods yet.

They will be 3 weeks old next Monday and I am going to introduce them to solids a little early with vets blessing. Also talked to Andy about getting a flu/ent vaccination done at 5 weeks to afford them some protection and give their immune system a kick start,he has agreed to do it for me. I must be thinking very positively to be planning so far ahead.  :)

Eugenie has led me a right song and dance over the weekend;I have worried myself sick that she was ill; not at all she is a fussy madam,my teats arent good enough, the temperature is a fraction of a degree too cool, I offered to feed her second instead of first not to mention I was too slow finding her mouth, I really need the patience of a saint. However she is my little purr pot.
Angelica is eating well and is going to be a proper little madam when she grows up already she is the "she who must be obeyed type" she`s mummy angel.
Pushkin is my rock,he`s a greedy little gannet and never complains (except at poo times).
Weighed them this morning
Angelica =286 grams
Eugenie =331 grams
Pushkin = 362 grams
They are 3 weeks old today.

I have 2 apostle spoons which I`ve kept all these years, I use them for my bottlefeds because strangely they make me feel I am getting help from God.
Ela those were the days apostle spoons and fish knives and forks to display but I was from a family too poor to afford the fish.Must admit if I went back in time I wouldn`t want to change a thing. :)

Back to the babies all 3 slept from midnight till just before 6am,they all drank their milk and then lapped a little kitten soup. :)

I was chosen today
I'm learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don't you cry

And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone

When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.

Remember our love
In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
when you're thinking of me.

Thank you All for your very kind words. I am so lucky that I was able to give Angelica the love and care that she needed and have lots of happy moments to remember, the joy of the morning those little eyes opened and that picture where she appeared to be waving; she was such a special little girl who will be missed so much .
Her sister Eugenie and brother Pushkin are keeping me amused right now with their efforts to eat the plate.

Angelica was seen by 2 different vets yesterday who both thought she had either a deformed bowel or had suffered an intersusseption, either way surgery was needed and she was just too small and weak to even try.

Goodbye my Angel
