Title: Is she lost?
Post by: ccmacey on July 17, 2007, 12:02:06 PM
I have been getting a visitor over the last couple of weeks and I'm starting to wonder if she is lost? She has been coming for food every night and at first she was very wary of me. She would sit on the fence and as soon as I went out she would jump over the fence but does not go too far, just out of my eye line.

Last night I managed to coax her down and she came over to me for food, she is a friendly cat and liked having a fuss, she gobbled the food like nobody's business and then I went into the house she sat on my fence meowing, I think she may of wanted to come in?

I also have an unneutered male that comes round, maybe she is not spayed and waiting for him?

I decided to keep her in last night so I could take her to the vets to be scanned today but by the time I had rounded all my cats into one room, I went back out and she had gone.

I'm going to try the paper collar thing and hopefully someone will call and say she is their cat. If not I will try to keep her in and take her to the vets to be scanned. She looks well kept and she is not skinny or anything.

CC, word is getting around the neighborhood, that's all. They tell each other where the soft ones are.  :evillaugh:

To have this many pussers turning up for a free meal and a hug, makes we wonder whether you live in a area with a general feral/abandoned cat population? I have to say over 25 years, I've only had three cats actually turn up out of nowhere and try to move in with me. If this is a regular occurence, and I recall you saying you had a cat do this last year, as well as the Tom at the vets today, it might be worth dropping a line to one of the feral groups like Cat77. Perhaps they can give you advice about what to look for in terms of behaviour?

Also, check in the mirror. Look on your forehead for a message saying "This one" written in pawprints.

It doesn't seem to matter where I go, they always find me  :shy:

The stray I caught last year was at my old address and he is now living with my mum, he's grumpy Blacky on the other thread.

Seb is at the vets tomorrow, if he turns up before 6 tonight. Everything is crossed. I'm now off to buy a litter tray for him.

Cats, cats cats- I'm turning into a cat lady lol.

I have put a paper collar on her, hopefully someone will call me back. She is too much of a fusspot to be stray.

She is a dark tortie, more dark brown with blonde/ peach streaks and she has a peach patch on her left foot. ( just incase any one is looking )

I reckon you are like me  ;D

I reckoned I was the only one in my area in London with a catflap and i had a steady stream of visitors and some I got to know very well. One moved in and sadly had to be rehomed cos of my cat, another visited me everynight right till my last day there. Anotherone was the spitting image of Kocka and it was hard to tell them apart.

Yet another used to walk me to the shop at end of road. Loki tried to move in and was taken to battersea dogs home but owner contacted me 3 hrs too late and got him back. Another one used to rush in the front door when I came home from work , eat and rush out the catflap. he went missing and I saw a notice in the shop and I hadnt seen him for a couple of days but last saw him walking up the road.

He turned out to be in one of the upstairs flats up there. Then he started visiting again and he came to see me the day before he moved.

I miss all my furry friends that popped through the flap and was gonna right a column for a CP monthly rag called Thro the Flap, but never got round to it  :shify:

I wish I knew there were more cats round her cos only have seeen viscious ginger Jess, its just wall to wall dogs grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

No calls as yet. What should I do if she returns with the collar on? I suppose I will have to take her to the vets to be scanned.

I dont know where I will put her though as I already have a lodger in the bathroom.

If she is a roamer but does have a home, it could be a couple of days before she does back to Mummy and Daddy. Give it a few days yet...  ;)

  Don't know much about these collars, can they be removed (by the cat ) easily, or someone took it off her.

If owner removed it thats gratitude for you, a call wouldn't go amiss, even if it was to ask you not to feed her me thinks

she might like you better than her own home cause your kind, hope it all gets sorted out soon

I hope it gets sorted soon too, I cant keep tending to others cats I'm 8 months pregnant and getting very tired now.  :tired: Its knackering enough looking after my own.

I put a propper collar on her last night with a note securely taped on, I have asked her "owner" to leave the collar on her so I can take it back, it was my Renie's and she is no longer with me so I'm hoping I get it back.

What to do if she comes back with it on?

She was sitting in my garden last night with my cats and they were all fine, no hissing or anything  :-: This is strange as if she were male Ted would of chased her but he done nothing.

Please let her have a home I got enough to deal with.

Right, "Pepper" as I have called her has returned with the collar on and the note still intact.

She is in my kitchen at the moment, Im going to keep her here over night and take her to the vets tomorrow to be scanned. Hopefully she will be chipped and someone is looking for her.

She is a really nice girl and loves being petted, I cant see her being a stray.

In the mean time how do I go about searching the lost pets register for my area?

Good luck with Pepper and well done!  :wow:

Taking Pepper to the vets at 11, wish her luck  ;)

I do hope she is chipped, if not what am I to do with her?

I also dont like the feeling I could be taking someone's cat that just dosnt return home for a few days, but if she has a home why would she be coming to me to be fed for the past 2 weeks and risk having fights with my cats, all 4 of them.

As these are the sites I recommend people advertise on it seems sensible to check these:

http://nationalpetregister.org    ... this is probably a good one to start with .... you can search by date or county (click on missing pets then scroll right to the very bottom of the page and in tiny writting is says search missing cats by county .... NOTE:  this relays on the pets owner putting the correct county in the box .... not all do so it's worth trawling through all the lost ads)

Thanks for the advice Sam, I have not lost her- I think she may be missing from home (?) She's not my cat.

I have had her to vets this morning and she is not chipped  :(

So I have put the collar with the note back on her and let her out. Hopefully she will go home and her owner will call me.

The vets said if she keeps returning with the collar on leave it for a few days, in the hope she will go home and try not to feed her also. Thats going to be hard.

If after a few days she keeps showing up I will have to get onto a rescue so they can take her in.

The vet give her a good check over and she is in good health.

Come on phone ring!!!!

It maybe that her owners are on holiday and she doesnt like the arrangements that have been made for her but she keeps going back chaecking to see if they are home.

My last visitor in London was like this, he used to visit often but suddenly didnt want to leave. As I thouight I was moving in  few weeks I was desperate so took a photo and stuck up posters all around, saying that If I did not here from his owners by a set date , thro the corner shop , then he would be rehomed.

I heard within 24 hrs and the owners had arranged for someone to come and feed him but he did not like it and he had tried to move into their next door neighbours before me.

He visited me right up to my last day there and it still makes me sad that I had to leave Sooty behind and the thought of him coming looking for me in an empty house makes me so sad.

I did tell his owners the date i leftbut have never heard from them telling me he was OK despite asking.

maybe Misa was sent to me specially by Sooty cos Sooty was an enormous black and white although shorthaired.

sorry CC didn't mean to post all the "advice" just the links to the sites  ;)  I know she is "lost" so it might be an idea to check the sites that we recommend to people to advertise on.

Good luck

All the vets in your area should keep a lost and found, all the rescues even your local council site may have a section with cats on, mine do.

Strays dont have to be skinny and dirty, the amount of waste us dirty humans make is ample to feed many animals.
Title: Re: Is she lost?

The only chance I have with the registers is if someone has reported her missing, and if she is a true stray no one will of done this will they?

I knew I could hear it and Im not going mad, a little ringing noise, its the bell on Peppers collar. ARGH!!!!!!!

She is outside what should I do?

Surely if she had a home she would of gone back by now?

Should I feed her

Yes to what Gill lol. The vets said not to feed her in the hope she will go home, thats if she has one.

Anyways its raining and cold and Im a soft touch, she's in my kitchen, already been fed and I think she will stay here tonight. My cats are being ok actually- its her hissing at them.

I really dont like the thought of taking her if she is someone's cat. But then I suppose cats choose where they want to live  :shy:

The vets said are you keeping her if she is not chipped, is this ok to do this? I think they might of thought I was going to leave her there.
Title: Re: Is she lost?
Post by: Bazsmum on July 20, 2007, 23:13:15 PM
Yes as a cat is not (in legal terms)owned if it has'nt been registered (chipped)...i think that's true anyway  :)

prob best to put her in the "found" ads....then if no-one replies etc......

Really? I thought all people had to do was produce a reciept for the animal to claim legal ownership? Aren't cats classed as a 'posession'?
Title: Re: Is she lost?
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on July 21, 2007, 02:04:26 AM
I am not sure Pink. We had this over and over on Catchat and They certainly didnt used to be but not sure its very straight forward even now.

It also seems they can change hands quite easily cos there is a thread on here somewhere involving the quick rehoming of a cat that belonged to someone and they couldnt get her back.

if the cat has a chip that is registered to the right person, even RSPCA couldnt get away with not contacting the owner I think.
Title: Re: Is she lost?
Post by: Bazsmum on July 21, 2007, 06:24:58 AM
Im not a 100% sure if what i stated as "True".......just made sence as chipping is as "cheap as chips" (pardon the pun ) surely that would come hand in hand if you had a receipt........cats are easily given away etc......

Maybe someone could enlighten us??  ;D Do you think maybe another thread is in order here  ;)
Title: Re: Is she lost?
Post by: ccmacey on July 21, 2007, 13:01:51 PM
I read on here somewhere that a cat is only legally yours if its chipped and the details registered are yours. This is in a case of dispute with another person.

I have a plan- I'm going to take her to somewhere she can be safe, warm and fed and try to find her owner. I will put up notices in shops etc and give it a couple of weeks, I will also contact CP to see if anyone has reported her lost.

Do you think this is what I should do or just let her back out with the collar on?

All I can say is if she does have a home nearby she obviously doesn't want to go there. Maybe her owner has moved out?

She has only been coming here for the past few weeks but I have seen her walking the streets late at night for a couple of months.

She really is a lovely cat, a total fusspot. She slept in the front room last night and no cat fights as yet  ;D

....dont forget about the birds lol!

Yepthe cat is with me and she's a little doll.....dont really know her approx age (maybe 5ish?) her teeth are all good and she is becoming more agile as she relaxes and gets used to the place.....she has defo been out of home for a while......she was really shy....jumped at the least noise, when sat at the window she would jump down if someone walked past the house.....and she has only been out the back once and prefers to stay indoors  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

ps...ive re-named her Pippa  :)

Have you had the vets check her over to see if shes been spayed?
Title: Re: Is she lost?
Post by: Bazsmum on August 21, 2007, 19:03:16 PM
CC took her to the vets when she 1st had her....they give her the once over but never said if she had been spayed or not  :)

How do they know  :-: is it through a hormone test maybe?

All my cats in the house have been spayed and neutered already so i just thought if i waited 6 months and no season id find out that way  :-:
Title: Re: Is she lost?
Post by: Millys Mum on August 22, 2007, 17:16:32 PM
You cant be 100% without opening them up but if they shave and find a scar and she doesnt call then you should be ok.

You can get cats that are entire but dont call, still at risk of cancer tho.
Title: Re: Is she lost?
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on August 23, 2007, 07:55:03 AM
It is a tricky one, we prefer to wait and see if they come into season - checking for a scar isnt always reliable.

....just realised  :-:

She was taken in off the streets and has been seen outside for a good 7/8 months so i think she would of became pregnant if she had'nt been done.....

....just dont like them having GA if they dont need to  ;)

And Im sure she is a lot older than 6 months lol.

When I took her to vets to be scanned I asked if they could tell if she was spayed, they said you cant tell.

And Im sure if Pippa is not spayed she will be getting done  ;)
