Title: Parki not eating again
Post by: alisonandarchie on May 30, 2016, 22:22:41 PM
On April 29th I had to take Parki to the vet as she seemed to be going downhill rapidly and refusing food. He gave her an ab injection plus a steroid to stimulate her appetite which is certainly did until a few days ago.

Yesterday she started going downhill and not eating again :(

I phoned out of hours this morning and they said to bring her in. We were there for nearly three hours and she got a thorough check during this time and blood tests. The bloods were fine apart from a slight raise in sugar levels indicating stress.

She then had another ab injection and metacam.

She has only eaten a little bit so if she does not eat more will phone vet in the morning :(

Thank you

She was at the bottom of the stairs to greet me this morning but seems a bit weak and has lost more weight :(

I held a bowl of water for her and she drank a lot, so very pleased about that. She has had a few licks of food but the water was more important.

If she does not start eating today will contact the vet

Thank you Sue  She does seem a bit more livelier this morning and just lapped some of the 'soup' pouch ;D

It seems she is happier to eat when I hold the dish up to her when she is on a chair :)

Just made me wonder whether she has any arthritis in her neck, which is why she likes you holding the dish up? But good news she seems brighter today :)

Yes, great point, Heather.  You can buy special dishes now which are on a stand for just such eventualities.

This is one type, but there are others:

Thanks Lynn, just back

Parki has a tumour in her intestine and Matt the vet took a biopsy.

If it is the nasty spreading one she will have 3/4 mths. However it it is the other type it can be removed for a probable cure ;D

She has pain relief and some liquid to help her intestines.

Will just have to wait for Monday when results back.

She is drinking like anything since she came home which is wonderful :)

Feel quite empty and shocked but trying to make each hour count with Parki.

From a plump cat she is now very skinny

Thank you

She is still refusing to eat and have tried everything, ham, chicken, several pouches too.

I phoned up the vet earlier and was told to bring her in tomorrow.

I don't think she has drunk any water either during the day.

She did come outside with in the garden earlier but was quite weak and kept lying down.

Thank you everyone

Just back from seeing the vet. He gave Parki an anti sickness injection plus an appetite stimulant which is also an anti depressent.

She has lost a bit more weight which is hardly surprising.

It is all a case of waiting for the biopsy results. Our surgery does offer chemotherapy if it is that sort of cancer but do not think I could put her through this. Does anyone else have experience of chemo in cats?
Title: Re: Parki not eating again
Post by: Susanne (urbantigers) on June 04, 2016, 15:20:34 PM
I hope she eats something soon

No experience of chemotherapy in cats but it might be worth doing a search on pet forums as I'm sure I've read threads on there about cats having chemo but wouldn't be able to recall specific threads. I suppose it depends a lot on how it's given. If it can be given in tablet form I'd imagine that's a lot easier and less stressful all round. Fingers crossed it won't come to that though

My friend's young cat had chemo for lymphoma. She did very well, the chemo made her a bit less  bouncy than usual but she didn't seem unwell or unhappy in any way. The cat did really well and the vet has said that they consider her to be cured rather than in remission.

Thank you both so much, that is very helpful

She was very wobbly on her legs earlier when she got home but she has actually eaten a few biscuits and some ham, I got from the deli for her :)

He legs are much better now and she had a wander in the garden. The drugs have worked very well and she is obviously much more comfortable .

Chemo for cat doesn't give them the symptoms that humans get, apparently they tolerate it really well. Don't lose their fur or feel sick.  Hopefully Parki won't need to have it and the results are good :Luv:.

............when she got home but she has actually eaten a few biscuits and some ham, I got from the deli for her :)  .The drugs have worked very well and she is obviously much more comfortable .

Like all of us, she will be  a great deal happier being at home Alison and so glad the vets were able to make her so much more comfortable  :care: :care: :care:

It was quite some years ago now, 10 years and more, that my business partner's young cat Noodles underwent chemo.  He was only around 7 years old and she threw everything at saving him with regular trips to the specialists at Bristol University who said his only hope was chemo and my vet gave the treatment as hers did not have the expertise.  Sadly it was not a successful outcome but I have no doubt that things have moved on in that field.  I do however recall that cats do tolerate chemotherapy better than us.  Heather is right and it's very heartening to hear of Lynn's friend's cat responding so well to the treatment.

I've got everything crossed for tomorrow's results for your beautiful girl

Thank you Rosella

She has eaten a few biscuits the morning and drunk quite a bit of water ;

I think if chemo is offered when the results are in I would be very reluctant to take it up because of her age. I think great advances have been made in chemo for cats, which is wonderful. Alan , the vet , said that they have a cat that it has given an extra three years to. I think this gives great hope to younger cats for the future.

Alison and Parki

I think it is more difficult to make decisions when an older (but not ancient)cat is involved.Whereas one might want to treat a young cat whatever (my friend's cat was just short of her 1st birthday when the lymphoma was diagnosed. She is 5 now) and an ancient cat not at all, these middle years can pose more of a problem. I call these 'middle years' as our last cats lived to be 19 and 20 respectively.

You are the person who knows Parki best. You understand her general state of health and also know how she reacts to basket, car, vet etc.Whatever decision you make will be made out of love, with Parki's best interests in mind. But here's hoping that you don't need to be making those decisions anyway!

Good news she has eaten today and drunk a lot.

16 is no age these days for a cat, two of mine are 17 and 21. Silvie who is away at the mo having radioactive treatment for her thyroid is only 11, but the vets there were telling me they had treated cats of 20 and 21 for thyroid disease. Years ago they would have written them off. All fingers and toes crossed for a positive result for Parki tomorrow :)

I phoned the vet and it loos like the results will not be in today :-: I will have to be patient, which is difficult :) The biopsy was marked urgent so everything is being done.

Parki , again, is eating small amounts very often. I imagine the meds might have been stimulants as she can't really settle but seems happy with no discomfort.

Title: Re: Parki not eating again

Results are in, vet just phoned :-:

Parki does not have lymphoma but carcinoma. The vet spoke for ages, he has a cat, With his guidance I am taking her in at 8.30 for an op tomorrow. If, during the op they find it is worse than thought I will get a phone call and with sadness I will decide that it is best if she does not wake up.

They will keep her in over night for pain relief then the stitches come out a wk later. There is a risk of leakage and that would mean another op as they are rejoining her intestine up.

She can't eat after 9pm tonight :-:

As I know everyone will understand my brain is in a whirl

Oh Alison   I hope her surgery goes well and she's home with you asap. It sounds as though your vet is a good one.

All fingers toes and paws crossed for Parki to make it through surgery.  One of my stable cats had a similar operation a good few years ago, had a tumour cut out and her intestines stitched back together. Sadly though it turned out to be lymphoma and she went downhill after that.  Hopefully the carcinoma won't have spread and your vet can remove it all ok :Luv:

Good luck for tomorrow. I'm going through a very similar thing with Kylie right now, so know how you feel. She is on hunger strike, terrible diarrhoea, rapidly losing weight again. She is in for ultrasound next Wednesday and possibly a digital x-ray (they won't risk a biopsy with her). My vets are in the process of moving, hence the delay. All we can do is try to be positive

Thinking of you today, Alison, and hope you get the best possible result for Parki.

Couldn't get on earlier as no internet access at home

Alison, treasure, my heart goes out to you.  I know that you were half expecting this, but it still comes as an absolute shock.   It may sound like platitudes to you just now, but you gave Parki so much love and affection, she wanted for nothing.  The decision you've made was taken from love, as everything you've done for her has been.

That said, it does nothing to ease the pain, and the emptiness left behind that you have to handle.
