Title: DA AUCTION 2015 Chat and ask questions here
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on October 22, 2015, 00:35:11 AM
OK here it is the first thread!

Will start on 22 Nov and end 6 Dec 2015.

We dont know who will get the funds yet but wil llet you know mas soon as we know.......Tan and me  :shify:

However there is another change this year as Tan hasnt had time to get sponsor stuff  :(

So we are back to the old days with you to get stuff into the auction and it will be the old system not last years software, so easy to make rude comments when you bid

If anyone knows any one who could put in sponsor stuff go ahead and arrange  ;D ;D

I think she may have contacted a few and need to know if Simons Cat has been contacted for example.

So this year it will not be as massive as the last 3 years but we are hoping for a good show.

Any Etsy people you know who may like to contribute would be great and any companies who will send stuff direct to the winners would be useful. Dont know if PAH have been contacted either, will have to ask her who she has contacted cos she said a few.

I dont know about the Purrs advertising either, sorry only contacted her tonight cos people were starting to ask about it and everything was dead.

Will operate as before with auctioneers paying the postage and depending which rescue get the proceeds will try and do normal stuff liker feed a cat , name a cat and anything else you can think of.

Although Misa and co are willing to selling their pictures again, how about some others like Andrew and Nicola who are way better photographers than me  :evillaugh:

Contact me for details, doesnt cost you a thing but makes money  ;D

Chat and ask questions in this thread until we are slightly organized! This is as bad as my study

Our 9th auction on Purrs lets make it a good one  ;D ;D ;D

I'm so excited about the auction! I got a few fab things in it last year and it's such a laugh.

I've already picked up a few things for it so I'll be selling them this year as well as getting involved in the bidding war banter  :evillaugh:

Just an update.

Tan has contacted only 3 sponsers, Simons Cat , cat hampurr, Crystal clear Pet Products and she is sending me the list from last year.

She will do the advertising banners for the sponsors and is going to look to see who gets the proceeds...............could be based on who actually comes on Purrs!!!!!!!!!!!! but am guessing  :shify:

She says Etsy people are good to help.

So definately Vet UK, PAH need contacting and hope that they will be on that list. She is also sending me the email used last year.

Liz and anyone else who ends up with items to send out from sponsors, Purrs will refund the P&P to you so make sure you keep a list  ;D ;D

I have now made this a sticky and over next few days will try and set up the auction threads!!

Tan says the sending out of stuff is a massive job for one, actually too big but as we are so late may not be as big as last year  :shify: :shify:

Have just received the info and its huge!

WE need to be sure that we do not overlap as Tan is going to contact some other companies too........I remember Vet UK being one of them.

Too tired right now to work all this out and have to go to docs tomorrow for change of dressing on foot and then onto shops so guess it will be tomorrow evening at earliest before I can look properly at whats been sent......sorry cos that will delay things a bit.

Is there a pro forma email that we use? I was thinking of approaching the place where I get our cat food (Nurturing by Nature )  not that I'm planning on asking for raw food, but they might be prepared to donate some treats or suchlike. The Range sell loads of cat stuff, I might try them too, if that's OK?

I believe the funds should be going to Yorkshire Cats, postponed from last year.

And who are Yorkshire cats?

Nobody was postpobed from last year!

Do they ever post and if so where and when was their last post?

Actual pics are not sold its more people pay to see them, as said I will try and find a thread from a past auction.

Just not feeling too good tonight.

Yorkshire Cat Rescue.  They joined when the Feral Foundation did, and Tan said they would benefit from the auction the year after FF.  It was postponed though, I remember someone else mentioned it too at the time.  Don't know about posts.  Haven't been on here much recently.

I agree with that.  I know Purrs has always adhered to a strict rotation system for the auction funds and I also appreciate that ALL rescues need money to survive, but in the case of Lost Cats Brighton they really are approaching a make or break situation.  They need all the help they can get and they need it NOW.

They really need a new location don't they?  There is an appeal at the top of the page for them which does draw attention.

Thanks for your input all.

Sam Mewl has not posted since middle of last year although visited the forum about 2 months ago.

It will be Tans decision who the money goes to and I know she is very concerned about the lack of communication by rescues on Purrs.

While she understands that rescues have loads to do  but if they are going to accept considerable amounts of money from the members, members would like to be kept up to date................one post a month should not be too onourous! Also remember these rescues also get money from the draw!

I was hoping to get the rescue name from Tan overnight but nothing, so will try again.

Liz and anyone else who is contacting or wants to contact potential sponsors please will you email me and use Auction 2015 in the subject as so much junk comes thro.

I have to try and sort out Tans spreadsheet which is in xcell so its smaller and more manageable, will try over weekend.

OK spreadsheet ready to send out...............can be split between many  ;D

Also have thank you emails and request for ads and ummmmmm after auction one too I think.

Please email if you can help, Purrs will refund your P&P costs if items are sent to you for despatch to winners.

Instructions on what to do for auction, I will make up as we go along  :shify: :shify:

Anyone who has already had a reply from a sponsor,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yes or no..............please let me know what company and in a pm or email  please not on this thread.

I understand the rescues not writing regular updates, and don't mind.  I know how busy we are just feeding and caring for 3 + ( 1 feral )cats, and everyday life too...Cats are such a lovely way to be busy though!   :Luv:

Really, if monthly updates are required, I think the rescues should be told before acceptance by Purrs.  I think less than this is acceptable though.
Title: Re: DA AUCTION 2015 Chat and ask questions here

When rescues were first included on the list they all used to post regularly so it became a shock when they stopped even after taking large amounts of money from us.

You may be happy with them not posting at all but I certainly am not and think that goes for many members, some of whom have left because the rescue element of Purrs doesnt really exist except during the auction and monthly draws when of course they recieve money.

If a rescue cant find time to post once a month then I do not see why they should get any money and suspect that they could lose any money in the future.

Having had so much contact with rescues over the years we are well aware of the work and why we started doing auctions to help out a bit with funding.

However to get sponsors to contribute we need to tell them who the rescue is etc etc.

You have to see this from both sides. The time and work that goes into the auction is massive and we like to know how the money is being used and sponsors also like to know. So right now if they come on Purrs to look they see nothing, zilch from rescues so why should they sponsor!

Anyone who has approached sponsors please pm me with the names so we dont duplicate.

I agree I like to hear from the rescues as to what the money has been used for. I only contribute a small amout really but when I consider it in terms of the money I am donation especially in terms of postage it is really quite a lot. Last year postage alone for my items was nearly £20 plus the items I buy and the time to knit etc. I wouldn't just shove $30 in a collecting tin so I like to see where it goes. Just a personal thing maybe but it costs nothing to say thanks and update on the forum really.
I think Ron and cats is a worthy and deserving cause and would support that.

like soufflé I like to hear where the money has gone as well, I think we all know how hard people work at rescues however that doesn't stop us (we are only human) wanting to know that our £ has gone to feeding those kittens or paying off the vet or whatever it makes us feel more part of the whole thing
Title: Re: DA AUCTION 2015 Chat and ask questions here
Post by: Tan on October 27, 2015, 10:26:48 AM
hi Hunnies

so sorry it's taken a while to get the auction news out and to sort out who is getting the funds this year.  My spare time has been a bit scarce so I havent had any time to do all the sponsor work sadly.
This means the items going into the auction will mainly be items donated by members so the auction will be on a smaller basis than previous years.   This years theme will be "every little counts" as any funds will help the rescue rather than none at all!

I do have lots to go up myself inlcuding a very very special "cant get anywhere" item  :wow: ;D ;D and I have contacted some fo the sponors that we deal with during the year so there will be some sponor stuff :)

Also as we have had no chance to work on the new software from last year , we will go back to the old way of just posting a thread in the auction section for each item up for auction.

I will set up the new 2015 auction section shortly (this week) with usual instruction etc.

Right on to which rescue will get the funds, This has not been an easy decision and i have lain awake worrying over this last few nights.  :scared:
Basically, It is important that the Purrs members do know the rescue that their money is go to to help, so it is important that the rescue is a fairly active one on Purrs. The auction always raises more money if there is news about what furbabes are in need, how they are getting along etc  so the Purrs members feel a repore with the rescue and want to help more. This is the main reason for the sucess of our auctions.

It is completely correct that the next independant rescue that is due the auction fund is Yorkshire Cat Rescue but sadly we have not heard for over a year about the babes in care and how they are getting along where other rescues have. But They are still a great rescue and care for many babes in need. Its not the hoomans we give the money for but for the cats at the end of the day.

The next rescue due on the list is Ron at Lost cats Brighton. As you all know he is really struggling at the mo.

So here is my deliema!! I could make the desicion myself and be strict but as the money is all our money , I am going to put it to the vote !!!   Soooo Please can you choose in the above poll who you would like to get the aution money this year. As we are gettin close, please could you pop your vote in by Sunday 1st 10.30am. and when we reach that time, the one with the most votes gets the auction funds this year.
Bear with me while i set the poll :)

Thanks

Tan would it be possible to split the proceeds? It is very hard because both are needy causes and Yorkshire Cat rescue is dear to my heart as I live in the area - every little counts would mean every little would help both maybe?

Trouble with split options is that they dont get much money and its harder to run the auction. We abandoned that after trying it once.

Oh Liz hun  :( :( :(  so sorry to hear about Sundae Rose  :( :( :(   My love and thoughts are with you all.

Included the split option and you can change your vote if you want to.

As Gill says we have tried the split option before and it was better to concentrate on just one rescue esp with our feed a cat threads etc and with the rescues posts about the cats in their care to help promote the auction to raise more for them.

The choice is yours as to me it's the needy cats at the end of the day that will get our help no matter what rescue or both we pick. :)

Thanks for contacting Lillys Dawn hun

The cats are the priority but surely if it was split and say we made £1000, then £500 each is better than nothing, isn't it?

Anyway I am looking forward to the auction in whatever guise it comes.  ;D ;D
Title: Re: DA AUCTION 2015 Chat and ask questions here

The problem with that Andrew is that rescues eat up money on vet bills, feeding, litter etc and £500 goes no where as you know from your recent vet bill.

£500 could end up only part treating one cat!

Sad but true I am afraid  :(

Maybe if we get in touch with yorkshire cat rescue to ask for updates so they can benefit next year? Given the immediate need for help for Ron, I voted that way, but there is no reason why next year's can't be set now?

That's my main problem with this tbh!  Yorkshire cat rescue was postponed from last year, and now they may not even get it this year.  This poll is not fair at all.  If it is, why didn't we get a poll last year?  And why were they overlooked?  This could well be why they haven't updated on here recently.  Sorry, but just doesn't seem fair to keep postponing like this.  I know I was disappointed last year, but still put some bids on.

Sadly it's difficult descion and I can see already upsetting some. :( Is there a solution that everyone will be happy with??
I hate upsetting anyone but this thread has been the reason we have never before put the rescue that gets the auction money up for vote cause this is what happens when we all don't agree and wish for different things. People get upset.

The auction has always been for one rescue at a time (so the money can really help with a larger a amount ) we have selected the independent rescue per rotation each year. Two years ago we added two new independent rescues to the funding list to help more needy cats - feral stray foundation and Yorkshire cat rescue on top of our previous supported rescues.
We gave one of the new rescues the auction that year and it wasn't fair on are previous supported rescues to give another new rescue the funds the year after as well.  So we had the next previous rescue in rotation last year.

It is sad we can't support all the rescues every year with 8 or so auctions ( I would love to be able to) but that many will not raise much money. There will not be many items put up for each auction and no sponsor would give 8 times a year.

We do give all the rescues funds from the draw so money is going to one In turn every month.

My question is is there a way to please all ?  :) Maybe the split is the way this year but how many feel that would mean Ron or Yorkshire would be missing out on larger funds!! Lol if so we still can't please all!!

I know Ron is having serious problems but I had a look through previous auctions and since 2006 Ron has had the proceeds from 2 auctions. Yorkshire cats hasn't had any in that time.

Hard for me to judge but feel Rons need is greater and he posts!

So for me its still Ron all the way and would not be happy with a split cos its not enough money to do that.

Its a very hard decision and everyone is not going to be happy which ever way it goes and agree with you about the voting.

This thread was just to be the normal chat about the auction thread when I started it  :'( :'( :'(

Hi Andrew :) ron has been with us since 2006 and Yorkshire a new one year before last.

I fink all the cats n both rescues are equally needy so hard for me to say one over the other.
I won't forget it's for the needy cats at the end of the day in either rescue. What I worry about is all this if people are upset with the outcome, they won't support the auction and therefore the needy cats at the end of it so all the hard work put in for the auction won't be for much. :(
It's much better to try and find a happy ground now and have good support for the auction to help as much as poss the little ones that ain't so loved and cared for as our own furkids are.

Tan, at the time you did say Yorkshire cat rescue would get the auction proceeds the following year ( 2014 ).  I remember it well.

I know, but from the start it looked like another postponement.  I don't understand why you wouldn't be happy with a split?  At least it would be a compromise, but still not fair.  I feel unhappy about the postponement which did happen, but surely 2 postponements makes it even worse!  You say the money isn't enough, which sounds very wrong to me.  I like to think every little donation helps, and hope it does.
Ron's cats has some fundraising in place, but I see they want to raise 100k.  It's a very big goal.  I think perhaps too big...Surely there's a cheaper way of carrying on the good work?  There must be.

If you know of a cheaper way of getting a new place for the rescue please help him!

Money from the auction will be to care for the cats and is nothing to do with his fundraising.

I dont know about any postponement last year and no rescue is guarenteed to get the money any year and there will be no postponement this year either. One rescue is chosen and thats it, usually, and I have been working on this before Purrs started, way back about 10/11 yrs ago when Tan and I were on Cat Chat and where we did the first ever auction.

I have had a message from Yorkshire Cat Rescue and the founder asked me to post this for your information. I live in Yorkshire and have supported them so I think only fair they have some input while Sammeul is unable to post.

The person from here who has posted on "Purrs ...." in the past is our centre manager, Sam (I think her user name is Sam Mewl).  She has log on details.  Unfortunately at the moment she is having to do jury service so it has put a huge amount of pressure on us to have her away. I can't guarantee she will have time to post.

She normally works 5 days a week and often stays late to finish, and as far as I'm aware most of the posting she does on forums such as Purrs is in her own time, and I can't insist that she posts in her own time.

If you would be so kind as to post some of the information below, that would be great.

We rescue and rehome almost 900 cats per year, and we are run ragged both caring for the cats and fundraising to do so.  We have had some terrible terrible illnesses and conditions with the cats this year, many multi-cat households with very sick and very scared cats and we have been working like mad to try and help them (and succeeded).  We've recently spoken to staff at a local council in their housing department to try and get the people who don't like cats to intervene and help before things get out of hand (the cat lovers already do!).  But this will probably mean a massive increase in the number of cats we will end up taking - many of these households end up with in excess of 15 cats and sometimes over 20  or 30!  We have had a large number of untamed kittens and though we have worked with them and turned them round so that they can be rehomed with families rather than as ferals (there aren't that many feral places anyway) it has put a further strain on us and on our fosterers.

We can't afford a dedicated fundraiser and though we have recently opened a couple of shops and they are helping out, we have to raise the rest of it ourselves.

Perversely this makes it harder for us to join in on forums such as Purrs, as we are so busy fundraising and raising awareness that we don't have time to make regular posts.  There are quite a lot of forums for one thing or another and we just know we don't have the resources to utilise them as we would like to.  The same applies to social media such as Facebook and we wold love a presence on Instagram, PInterest and others but we don't have the resources to manage this properly.

It seems unfair of us to just put a quick thank you and not much else, but having said that we do value any money raised and of course the awareness of our charity by visitors to the forum.  At the moment we don't even have the time/resources to find the time to advertise our cats on catchat - we have to rely on our website (which is updated from our database) and our fosterers posting on Facebook and other social media.  We would love to have volunteers who could post knowledgably about us on forums such as Purrs, but they simply don't exist!!  If anyone volunteers to do things like that we grab them and tie them to a chair!!

To give some illustration of numbers, our vets bills since April (when our financial year begins) have averaged at just under £8,000 per month.  We neuter all the cats, and vaccinate them and microchip them and we also treat them for worms and fleas and any other stuff they need - dental work and obesity being two of the more common ones, but we also have a kitten with diabetes, a cat with terminal cancer and have had a dwarf kitten (who sadly died a few weeks ago).  We also support sick cats in their new homes so that the cats can get homes and not spend their lives in a pen.  We have several geriatric cats on our books (in new homes), a cat with diabetes and a cat with epilepsy to mention a few.

I understand that the decision remains with the members who post regularly.

I’ve been thinking about this.

It’s my understanding that Yorkshire Cat Rescue (YCR) are the next in line for auction funds, as discussed in this thread http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,45177.msg811400.html#msg811400 (http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,45177.msg811400.html#msg811400).  Lost Cats Brighton’s (LCB) immediate problem is to find – and finance – new premises; although this will benefit the cats indirectly, I thought the aim of the auction has been to provide funds for the care of the cats themselves.

When it comes to the amount of posting from supported rescues I think the reply from YCR posted by Souffle explains the problem much better than I could.  Most rescues now have their own website and some sort of presence on social media.  That’s a lot of updating that needs to be done by voluntary workers and YCR are not the only rescue that are not regular posters on Purrs.

While I totally understand the desire to support LCB, their immediate need is a building fund rather than a cat welfare fund.  I’ve therefore voted for YCR to benefit from this year’s auction.  Perhaps we could look at a separate one-off fundraiser for LCB’s building fund some time in the new year?

Playing devils advocate most rescues have a high social media and forum presence as this helps them stay in the public eye and raise awareness and keep them in the public eye

I also have vets bills in 4 figures every month of the year and we do it on our own in fact I look after 70 odd cats every day of the year on my own and still try to keep on top of the Clans social media, I also have 4 on borrowed time and have lost 5 cats and 1 kitten this year as well as working and having diabetic and hyperthyroids so know the monthly costs involved

All rescues are under pressure emotionally and physically and of course financially but those that take the time to post and let us know how they are getting on it takes a couple of minutes and even with all his health worries and the potential loss of his rescue hasn't stopped Ron posting

As I said earlier if Ron is awarded the auction the money will be directly for the cats, vet bills, food etc , it is nothing to do with the building fund.

I have to agree with what Liz has said and Ron is a very small independent rescue, a one man band supported by a small group of volunteers and always in desperate need of funds for the vet bills alone.

He does not have the resources of Yorks who are huge and do a great job but right now he has cancer and is not a young man and the auction for him could be the difference of the rescue going under or just getting by  and the amount of money does matter cos £500 would maybe pay one vet bill and more would could obviously do more.

Its never an easy decision to say who will get the money and I have always thought its so sad that we only raise a relatively small amount in terms of cats needs but its the best we can do and has grown over the last few years.

This year we have problems just running the auction and for us this year  its  harder than any rescuer posting once a month.

Like rescuers we are of vastly differing backgrounds, ages, parts of the country but have come together by our love of cats. Many are disabled or sick but we try to do our best.

The poll looks pretty conclusive to me and after all its the members who come on Purrs who put their money into the auction and think its only fair this year that they make the choice............this is never done lightly and Tan and I have always thought about this deeply but members do not usually get any input. This year we are faced with a small rescue in difficulty versus a massive rescue who may have to trim a few corners and have facilties etc that only Ron could dream of .

I am not going to post on this topic any more as Tan must be making her decision and have to do some other auction related work.

If its going to a rescue of that size then I probably won't take part in the auction and the goods I have got will be donated to local rescues here in Aberdeenshire and one in Angus that we support as they take the time to keep their social network up to date and yes we all work and have health issues and lives outside rescue as well as being available 24/7 to help where we can

Also as a big bidder I won't be joining in or advising some of the original member of the auction -they come and bid big as well sorry but if they have shops and rehome that many cats a year they have a good financial income - I have friends who are a registered charity and have 3 shops that keep them in what they need and they do things like horses and wildlife as well as cats and dogs and have large vets bills as well

I will of course speak to my Rep at RC to advise what I propose to do and advise accordingly

Why are people constantly ignoring the facts on here that this was promised to Yorkshire cat rescue?  There shouldn't have even been a poll or any doubt about it!  I hate this way of going on.  People telling others they can have something, and it not happening.  YCR was accepted into Purrs as all the others, whatever size they are.  Of course, the bigger the rescue the more cats to look after.  They all need money.

I have to say I avoided this thread because of the way the tone was going, but the auction is run voluntarily, in our own time, with the generosity of donors, sponsors and members. It isn't a right, but involves a lot of hard work from many like minded people for a good cause. To be bluntly honest, if I am staying up late, giving hours of my own time (on top of work/cats/life) I want to know a bit about the cats that benefit. Selfish I know, but I like to know where the money has gone, and don't think a monthly update is too much to ask. Both charities still benefit from the purrs draw monthly as well as big bertha.

I don't see why the idea of a postponement is so abhorrent given the request for updates and that, as above, they still benefit in some way. As a larger charity, I would question whether ycr would feel the benefit of a split auction.

Hopefully a decision can be made and we can return to the excitement of the auction gear up.  :shy:

Well according to Gill, Ron's won't feel the benefit of a split auction either.  Which doesn't make me feel small donations are worthwhile.

I'm sick of this anyway...

No I knit the cats that you hand on your tree as a Christmas Ornament judecat. I usually do a personalised one for someone and a couple of preknitted ones. I'm having some eye issues just now so haven't got started yet this year. I have developed loads of floater things which are taking a bit of getting used to. The optomotrist says there is nothing to worry about and my eyes are getting older but it is a worry.

I didn't want to be the person to upset anyone (you know i am a right soft ass! lol )  hence left the full decision to the members. Sadly the posts re who should get the auction were started before we had a chance to decide and already there was conflict.   I am sorry but it wasnt fair for me and Gill to take the brunt of this.

The auction therefore this year will go to Lost Cats Brighton as per the majority vote.

Sadly, I haven't been able to do alot of sponsor work this year so I am soo very gratefull to all that have helped and contacted sponsors for us.  :thanks:

I think the auction will be a more smaller one than in previous years but any money raised is better then none to help the needy babes that are not so lucky as our own.  It's for them purely we do this  :ahh:

Soooooo   I will this week pop up the new 2015 auction section and ususal instructions etc and of course pop the xmas hat on our Purrs icon  ;D

Gill, am not sure, but I think from having had a squint at Etsy, I typed in "Cats" in the search bar, and then selected a seller at random.  There was a box on the right hand side which said "Ask a question" and I think that pulls up an email address, or not quite an email address but a means by which you can communicate with the seller.  Be sure to select UK only for the seller selections, otherwise there could be postage issues.

Hope that helps

For Etsy, you click on an item to view, the shop name will show above it e.g 'TuxandTabby', you click on the shop name. Scroll down and on the left hand side under shop owner will be a link saying 'contact the shop owner'.
