Title: The best of friends and now they hate each other :(
Post by: Hannikat on May 22, 2015, 19:27:51 PM
I'm not sure what to do!

I have two sister cats and they are usually the best of friends, grooming each other, generally great.

I took the more dominant of the two to the vets for an op yesterday and brought her back that day. And now the cat who didn't go hates her. Spitting, swiping, crawling low on the floor. She's terrified. My other cats is fine, just seems puzzled by it.

I know now that it's because my cat doesn't recognise her scent but I'm worried the damage is now done as I didn't separate them when I got back and didn't notice the aggression for an hour :(

What can I do! I've had the feliway on all day and I'll rubbed her down with her blanket hoping her scent will rub off on her again, but it's made no difference :(

Don't worry. I imagine theyll get back to normal very soon. The "eau de vet" can cause temporary strife.

Agree with ML and I would try rubbing the non vet one down and then rubbing that on vet cat.

thanks guys. Still WW3 this morning, but I've bought some feliway spray to rub them down with so we shall see

I'm pretty sure you are not supposed to use directly on your cat.  Assume instructions are with the spray but found these online ...

http://www.feliway.com/uk/Feliway/Feliway-Spray

I think it is quite common for the vet smell to cause problems.  Very much hope they return to normal behaviour soon.  Must be upsetting to watch

lol! no your not. The vet said to spray it on a towel and rub them down with it. Judging by the hissing coming from behind the curtain it's not had much of an effect :P

What are their names btw?  Very much hope the one recovering for the op is doing well?   :care: :care:

Izzy and Bella :)

Izzy is doing fine. considering she's had 8 teeth removed she's having no problem eating! She just seems a bit bemused that she keeps getting clipped around the ears by her best bud :P

OMG what a gorgeous video  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2: and beautiful girls.  It must be such a worry that their behaviour has altered so completely.

Aaw poor Izzy  :(  As if she doesn't have enough to contend with.  Glad she is recovering so well after losing so many teeth.

I don't usually question vet advice as I have no vet qualifications but ......... I'm really not at all sure about vet's suggestion of spraying on a towel and then rubbing directly your girls.  The only time I have used the spray has been on the carrier when transporting any of ours that particularly freak out over vet visits.  There is quite a bitter smell when first sprayed so I always follow the instructions and spray the carrier a good 15 mins before using it.  Hope you don't mind me saying  :shy:

no of course not. I've been on this forum on and off since I got the girls in 2008 and you've all given nothing but the best advice :)

they don't seem effected by it but I'll try just spraying it on the cat tree etc instead from now on.

Other advice I've had is to try adding a touch of vanilla essence to their foreheads and tail tips or covering him both in the juice from a tin of tuna in spring water, all very bizarre!

No idea about vanilla essence but can understand the possible benefit of a little tuna in spring water juice on their coats ......... as long as they don't try to eat one another lol  :evillaugh:

TBH, I'd leave them to it for a while and keep fingers firmly crossed that it doesn't take too much longer to get back to normal.  They really are such beautiful gals  :Luv2:

Have only just noticed your signature     and there was me asking what their names are  :-[  :sneakin:

I think this is quite a common occurrence and can almost guarantee they'll be back to normal within 72 hours, if not sooner. It's just the smell of the vets and once that's worn off I predict they'll be best buddies again  :Luv:

It happened to my boys and was quite upsetting, especially as the 'vulnerable' one who's been poorly is the one who was being picked on/rejected by their previously loving sibling  :(

My female cat always hates her brother when he gets back from a vets visit but they usually get back to normal after a day or so. I wouldn't put tuna on them as I remember once when Buffy licked Xander's head after eating Mackerell it stayed on his head for a week and it was really stinky and I couldn't get it off.

They are beautiful girls! How upsetting it must be for you to see them like this when they are usually so affectionate  :( I'm sure they will be back to usual soon but understand that you will be on tenterhooks until that happens

If you have any baby powder you can rub a little into the fur of the one sporting eau de vet to help reduce the scent.  When I got Mosi his breeder did that so that he would smell less of her other cats when I got him home and introduced him to Jaffa.

thanks all

I've managed to get them in the same room. Although the non vet cat bella is very tense and  is watching her like a hawk lol  :'(

well I quick update.

I'm still living in a war zone  :'(

There less hissing in passing but Izzy (Vet cat) is now almost provoking it. Walking towards her face on etc. That usually ends in a massive yowl and a whack.

on the plus side they can sit in the same room together if distracted and we put them in their room together last night and despite some initial growls they seemed to cope.

So progress is very slow... I'm just hoping this isn't it! my poor little Bella is so stressed out by it all

Zoonie, one of my cats went missing for 17 hours a few weeks ago, when I got him back his brother went crazy with him, growling, hissing and attacking him. I put Zoonie in the litter tray, used dry litter and covered him in it, his brothers scent. All was back to normal in a couple of days.
Try it with both of them, so they both smell the same.

I've give that a go, they are definitely using the same litter tray and the second 1 hasn't been used at all. Hopefully that helps. This has been the worst week, I hate watching them both being so stressed and depressed  :'(

not great

they can currently co exist in the same room with only the occasional hiss if izzy approaches bella head on. But "friends" seems a long way off  :'(

I wonder if it's worth going back to basics, segregating them (if you have the ability to in your house) for a couple of days, and then trying feeding either side of a closed door, working up to leaving the door ajar, and moving thee feeding dishes closer to the door over a period of time?

Might be worth checking this link out too - if it doesnt work, try cutting and pasting into your browser.

well this happened over the weekend, so definitely an improvement! it's the only time so far but I'm hopeful it's a step in the right direction. None vet cat bella is the one wrapped around Izzy  :Luv2:
