Title: I'm back!
Post by: DaveD on November 08, 2014, 17:49:06 PM
I dropped out of sight a while back, when my life took quite a downturn but, thanks to the birthday greeting which dropped into my inbox on Wednesday, I've found my way back. I couldn't find an introduction thread, so here it is, nearly eight years late!
I had to give up all my cats, but thanks to the kindness of Gina at the cat rescue, I got two of them back, Bramble and Clio. Sadly, Clio made a dash out of the front door (they only had access to the back, and got lost at the front) and hasn't been seen for over a month.
The main reason I came back was the wonderfully helpful people here. I may need some advice soon.
A couple of weeks ago, a small cat, probably about 9 months old, wandered in and refused to leave!
I've done all the stuff you're supposed to do, like checking for a chip, asking neighbours, and contacting vets and rescues, all to no avail. One thing that might have hindered finding where she came from is that I started keeping her in quite early. She hasn't been spayed for one thing, and it's firework season round here, so a lot could go wrong if I leave her to roam.
She's a bit of a handful, so I'm starting to wonder if she's been abandoned. That could be wishful thinking though!

Hey Dave, welcome home.  :welcome:

Have you checked the online lost pet sites for her? Animal Search UK and National Pet Register instantly spring to mind, also lots of folk turn to Gumtree and advertise missing and found cats there.

If she's not spayed that will almost certainly be adding to her behaviours. Definitely worth having a chat with your vet, you've already done the legal minimum of advertising her and as she's been "lost" for more than seven days you can take action to have her spayed as a stray cat under the CPL or RSPCA supported neutering schemes. Ask your vet if they participate, some don't but most have some affiliation with rescue organisations.

It's great that she found you to care for her, I sincerely hope your other cat Clio is with someone as caring as you.

Thanks Sheila, for the welcome and for the advice! I was going to ask elsewhere when it would be appropriate to get her fixed, and now I have the answer. I'll get started during the week.
Hopefully not all of her behaviour will change - some of it is hilarious! I have several toys that the other cats have spurned, that have come out again. Some of them are on the end of elastic, and have to be put away, or she could hurt herself. Whenever I open the box they're in, she's in like a shot, and I have to chase her to get the toy back!

Welcome back to the family Dave.

Am so sorry that Clio has absented herself.  I hope that she makes her way back to you.  However, if she doesn't, it seems that the Universe is providing, filling the vacuum that nature abhors, and that Small Cat has appeared for a purpose.   :Luv:  I have this gut feeling that some great celestial agency senses our need for cat company - like a Nanny School - and sends us an opportunity.  Not everyone gets Mary Poppins, or Nanny McPhee, but your young charge sounds delightful.  :wow:  Have you got a name for her?

:welcome: Dave. Sorry to hear about Clio, but agree with Sue about small cat finding her way to you.

Thanks everyone!
I've been holding off giving her a name, as I didn't want to assume too early that she'd be staying. There's still a possibility that someone will claim her, but I think I'll risk it!
A friend, who isn't very keen on cats, fell in love with her at first sight, and she suggested the name "Lily", so I think I'll go with that. Not that it really matters - all my cats have answered to "Oi!" In fact, Lily doesn't wait to be called. This morning, she was on my shoulder seconds after she saw me. Luckily I'm wearing thick clothing, so her rapid climb didn't tear me to shreds!

Hello Dave and  :welcome: back. I'm afraid that I wasn't here during your previous tenure so we haven't met.

I'm sorry that Clio has gone AWOL,I do hope that - wherever she is - she is as comfortable and loved as Lily has become

Thanks, Clio has always been friendly to people, so there's a good chance she's been taken in by someone who isn't aware of microchipping.
On the other hand, she was (as far as anyone could tell)quite old when I got her about 7 years ago, so she might have run off in confusion to die, as cats sometimes do. Even in this "worst case" scenario, she won't have suffered too much. At least, that's what I tell myself.
Either way, I wish I knew.

It must be awful not knowing what has happened to Clio.

I too think maybe your new friend has been sent for a reason  ;)

Not knowing what has happened to Clio must be so upsetting for you, but Lily seems to have turned up to look after you whilst Clio is off on her jollies.

Hope Clio comes home soon with lots of happy stories to tell.

Lily certainly turned up at the right time. She's such a handful, and so affectionate, that I don't have much time to dwell on Clio's absence.

...and now I don't need a distraction from Clio's absence, because SHE'S HOME!!!
After nearly 15 weeks, she was brought back to me by someone who had also lost a cat, that looked exactly like Clio. At first she thought it was her cat, but checked for a microchip anyway. She and her friend who fed Clio for some weeks, have made my Christmas!
Here's Clio earlier today, back in her favourite spot on the back of my chair. It's almost as if she hadn't been gone!

So now I have three cats, one of which, Lily, is a complete stranger to Clio. I was expecting some trouble, but it's been very quiet so far.
Perhaps too quiet!  :rub hands:

Clio looks right at home and pleased no trouble with her and Lily  ;D

Lily has been taunting Bramble almost since she arrived, in much the same way Bramble used to tease Clio, but she's giving Clio a wide berth. Hopefully that will continue. There's enough hiding places if things get too boisterous though.

That's fantastic news! I'm so pleased for you and for Clio. :-)

Just another instance of a happy ending that shows why every cat should be chipped.

Not a very good photo (especially of me!), but here's Clio acting as my headrest! She doesn't purr very loudly, but I get to hear it clearly!

I can see she's happy to be back with her Daddy, Dave  ;D

How's the beautiful Lily engaging with her now?
Title: Re: I'm back!
Post by: DaveD on December 21, 2014, 19:17:15 PM
Lily's still leaving her alone, which I'm sure Clio appreciates!
Bramble approaches her occasionally, but she's getting on now herself, so she doesn't annoy Clio as much as she used to. Lily tends to tease Bramble, so Bramble is too tired to try and play with Clio!
Bramble managed to give me a scare today. She disappeared for about 3 hours, and I thought she must have sneaked out when the door was briefly open. I searched everywhere in the house and couldn't find her, then she just appeared out of nowhere! It was obviously very worrying, but on the plus side, at least I know that if the cats have any disputes, there are plenty of hiding places, so they can avoid fighting.

With Clio coming back, cats going missing are at the front of my mind, which probably makes me panic a lot earlier than I normally would!
I've found out exactly where Clio was found, less than half a mile from home. I must have walked past her several times.
This is the photo on Facebook that, although I missed it, started Clio's journey back home:

Wow and they are often not far away.............she is gorgeous  ;D

When sasa went missing the first time she was only 2 doors up and the second time she was seen most days aqbout 8 doors up and was totally semi feral and syed out from Sep to jan/feb, poipping back to eat when she was sure I was in bed.

She is a calico tortie and when she finally decided to come back was orange all over which took her months to get rid of but during that time she started to allow me to stroke her  ;D

It's still very peaceful here. Clio seems to have had a calming effect on Lily. She's still playful, but she doesn't tease Bramble as much!
I'm not sure why. Clio mostly sleeps on the back of my chair, and doesn't really interact much with either of the other two.
I'm not complaining though!

Certainly is!
It helps that they still seem to get on OK, though  Clio seems to view Lily with a measure of disdain!

Hello, congratulations on getting Clio back.

Lily looks lovely - I have a dilute tortie as well (Molly) - she's not quite such a hoolicat as yours sounds ;P. Hope they're all settling well together still.

They're settling in very well. I think Clio will keep to herself, she always did, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Lily and Bramble get closer as Lily grows and becomes less boisterous.
I'd be happy enough if things stayed the same though. Lily only jumps on Bramble when she's walking past, and leaves her alone when she's asleep (mostly!), so the house continues to be peaceful, with only the occasional flurry of mayhem to keep things interesting!

Today is a day I don't want to repeat - Clio went missing again. After about an hour of not seeing her I started to worry. After searching all the possible hiding places in the house I began to panic. I looked in neighbours' gardens, and under cars parked at the front, but no sign, so I started to get ready to go out, and extend the search. I'd just put my coat on, when she sauntered past me on her way to the food!
So now I've got to figure out where this new hiding place is, before the stress kills me!

what a worry, you need on of those locator things!
Title: Re: I'm back!
Post by: DaveD on January 05, 2015, 14:02:35 PM
I'll look into that when I have some dosh. It would help me find that hiding place too!
Title: Re: I'm back!

I'm test driving a Loc8tor  device on Theo, so far so good as he responds to the collar beeping and comes home when he knows I'm looking for him. Unfortunately this means I haven't found his hidey hole either! However it does work and there are two collar tags which brings the cost down to £32 per cat. If they shed the collar you should be able to track it down too.
Title: Re: I'm back!
Post by: DaveD on January 05, 2015, 23:03:07 PM
Two collars would be ideal for me, even though I've got three cats - Bramble will not wear a collar! I haven't tried one on Lily yet, as she's still a bit small, but I don't expect problems with her.
I've finally got a photo of the three cats together, or as close together as they're likely to be, and I think I know where Clio had been hiding. The chair she's sitting on is a riser/recliner, and there's more space under the seat than I expected there to be. I only realised the space was there when Lily ran in during one of her mad half hour escapades.

Awww,lovely photo  ;D

I suspect you might be right about the hiding place, I know there is quite a lot of room underneath our recliners - enough for Alfie and he's a big boy!
