Title: Where has my baby boy gone??
Post by: NikNakNoo on June 16, 2014, 05:16:43 AM
Hi all

I once had this little cute tiny boy kitten called Bruno. He was so lovely. I use to be able to pick him up with one hand....I use to watch him fall asleep for most of the day.....I use to watch him be scared to jump off the sofa or the side of the litter tray. Can anyone tell me where this beautiful baby has gone?! Because Hes been replaced by this super growing, lanky, gangly cat with boggly eyes and the want to jump and climb everywhere. This non stop growing cat is fearless and is naughty beyond belief. He runs and jumps on his sister, Bebe, while she's minding her business and nibbles her ears and the back of her neck. This cat has learnt how to climb the indoor clothes horse and to jump from the table to the bookshelf. He also grows every day.....so please, someone, where did my baby boy go and how come they grow so quickly once hitting 12 weeks old??? I seem to have misplaced a sweet baby and gained a lanky confident big eyed naughty animal

(Who I love muchly and still comes for cuddles with his mum  :Luv2: )

:evillaugh:  It doesnt take long, does it?   :Luv:  It's a fascinating stage in their development, and one where I heartily recommend you take as many photos as you possibly can, because you'll see such changes in this first year of his life.

We were looking at some photos of Moray and were amazed at the changes in him - he wasn't even fluffy when we brought him home but now is almost a miniature Maine Coon complete with ear tufts and floofy trousers.  :evillaugh:

Hi sue

My phone is full of photos :) but its surprised me so much how he has changed in the last week or so. His face is changing too. Hes getting a little more fluffy but Hes still a super cat. Very loving and playful. When do they reach fully grown? Is it a year?

Most cats reach full maturity around 12 to 18 months but some breeds, like Birmans and Maine Coins are slower to mature, often not until 3 - 4 years old.  Bruno will be growing out of his "toddler" phase and approaching his teenager or adolescent phase.  Hoodlums, in other words.   ;)

:) that sounds....ermm hard work haha he also has realised he likes to run around at full pelt and meow and chat about life :) he's adorable but wow is he growing. Part of my can't wait to see him all grown up but I would love him to stay just as he is.

I know just what you mean - babyhood is one of the few times we see our cats as relatively uninhibited goofballs, without that aloof demeanour of adulthood, but - on those occasions where our adult cats let their guards down and we catch them at play, you see the kitten within, however old they may be  ;)

This is very true as it happens with Bebe. She does allow herself to play once in a while and she will go mad. She will get big round eyes and she will just run around all silly. diving in and out of the Orange play cube which I got from here. She will spy her brother and then pounce on him :) its lovely to see. I wish we had Bebe as a kitten. Think she probably just left to get on with things.

I hope Bruno doesn't lose his loving character.

Bruno has released Bebe's inner kitten  ;D. Some kittens never experience proper play which is very sad.  Bebe however now has her little monkey of a brother to make things fun.  I don't think Bruno will be less loving if you continue to treat him as you have - cats respond to our approaches - although as they gain independence and confidence in adolescence they like to test their boundaries.  I've found though that if you continue to offer play sessions and loving gestures or touches they will normally respond each time with their own loving gestures.  (Like when Moray eyeballs us then dances past and grabs our feet without having his claws out)

They do start to slow down gradually.

I dont think I noticed any more changes in their features after about a year, then they just seem to get bigger and fill out more.

I love it when their ears start to look too big for them, then they 'grow into their ears'!  :Luv:

That's because having his eyes open means running around at full pelt or being naughty which makes it tricky to take a photo.....sleeping Bruno = clear photo :)

Tell me about it. Two months ago Astro and Zuni were two and a half pounds af sweetness. Now they are 6 and a half pound monster mogs. Nothing is safe. Apparently they slow down at 6 months  when they are three quarters of their adult size.  :really:

I was told by the rescue center, the vet, the PDSA and RSPCA.In the first 6 months a kitten will reach three quartersof its adult size and weight, the next 6 months growth would slow down until they are 1 year old when they will be fully grown. As with humans there are variations

I thought hollycat meant they would slow down as in their activities, not their growth. I misunderstood anyways..... Well Bruno is reaching 14 weeks and weighs 2kg (which I believe is 4.5 pounds, roughly), is that big for his age?
Title: Re: Where has my baby boy gone??
Post by: Sue P (Paddysmum) on June 25, 2014, 07:39:26 AM

Me too.   :shy:  Wasnt thinking about the growth rate particularly.

I'd say Bruno is on the larger side, but not overly large.  It's difficult to tell at 14 weeks, because some kittens put on a growth spurt and grow longer, rather than wider, if you see what I mean?  Ross was a big lad by about 6 months, and he weighed about 12lbs at a year old.  I think he's definitely been the largest cat we've ever had, but he wasn't overweight, just "chunky" (and gorgeous and I loved him!)

He looks so sleepy.   :Luv:

Moray brought us two mice last night - we slept through the first delivery (most unusual, but I've been absolutely exhausted thrugh lack of sleep since last Thursday) and were woken by the enthusiasm of the second delivery of a much larger vole this time.  It's a very thoughtful way to be woken, but ingrate that I am, I prefer Bruno's way......  :evillaugh:

Though he still licks my eye lashes and then rolls up under my nose so I can't breathe. Im suspicious he's trying to kill me  :naughty: but I'm sure he just feels safe there.

You're making me so jealous. None of my ex-ferals do anything so affectionate. If I try to touch them they run away, thinking I'm going to kill them.

One does try :) its hard being a lady all the time.

It's so lovely because they play so much. They properly wrestle and chase each other. Its so nice to see :)

It is lovely, isn't it?  When you look back to your initial worries and misgivings, does it give you a really good feeling inside?

When we first got Moray, Tinks was aghast (understandably so) and yet we like you were watching our two having a gentle wrestling game the other day (Moray seldom pushes his luck, and is much gentler when playing with Tinks) and thinking how well they get on now.

It's such a pleasure to watch, isn't it?   :Luv: :Luv:

Aaah, feel the lurve.....

Thanks all  :thanks:

I think they can certainly sufer from allergic reactions.  Wonder if it might be related to his recent bath?

It was happening before that, tho thinking about its got worse since. Hmmm think maybe I shall ask the vets when we go.

Yep, probably worth it.  Allergies can be tricky little blighters to pinpoint.  At least, as he doesnt go out, it will narrow down some of the issues.

When I was a lot younger we had a dog who got  a rash on her belly which was to do with hay fever.

Also many years ago a friend was told by the vet to put eucalyptus oil in a burner to help her cats with their breathing but can't remember if it was hay fever, could have been.

The oil helps breathing and more like for cat flu I think, although have read that cats hate the smell.

Kocka wasnt bothered cos used it all the time for myself

Any suggestions to stop him because we've tried everything and he still does it. He is having his little Bruno balls removed on Monday...bless him

Methinks he will also grow out of this.  It's typical unruly kitten behaviour.

Have you tried the distraction methods, and if so, what is his typical reaction to each method?

He'll make up for that when he gets back.  Be prepared for one of two scenarios.  Some cats come back from neutering very sleepy and just wanting to snooze it off.  Others come back absolutely hyperactive, and bounce round the house like a lunatic - just depends on the anaesthetic used.  If it's the latter, it will usually wear off later in the day, and then he'll sleep to make up for it.

Like he has not even had an op. He is bouncing around and being a naughty cheeky boy like always. Tho I can inform you that he does not like the head collar one tiny bit. I took it off this morning so we could have morning cuddles. He likes to run his head and face all over mine for about 20mins in the morning and he couldn't do that with his cone on. Bless him.

If having his man pride removed is going to calm him down, how long does it take to take effect?? Tho he is only 4 and half months old anyways so still very much a baby.

Xander was exactly the same once he'd been spayed he was maybe a bit quiet for a couple of days after but nothing that noticeable. Why does he have a head cone? Neither of mine had one when they were spayed and I had no problems at all?

Oh Bruno has slipped the whole quiet phase. he came home and looked a bit drunk but still carried on in his usual crazy way.  They've given him a cone to stop him pickingt his bits. He only has to wear it for 3 days so off Thursday

If it was me I'd take it off when you are around and can watch him. I had to make sure Xander didn't bite Buffy on her side as they were very playful, but appart from that they were fine. With mine I think wearing the cone would have been worse than the operation.

The lampshade of shame....    :evillaugh:   No, ours didnt have one either, but I think some vets do still give them depending on technique used, stitches, etc.

Glad he's not suffered too much after his "ordeal" - clearly not when he's back to full snoozling duties in the morning, at anyroad.   :Luv:

Usually when they've been neutered it can take some time for the hormones to settle down, but given that his would barely have got going, I dont think it will be too long - his exuberance is just natural kitten high spirits.  They'll become more sedate around 12 - 18 months old.   ;)  usually.   :shify:

I have a question about Bebe....she is putting on a lot of weight and in my opinion is too large, what can we do to help her lose some chub and keep active? She doesn't really play as such, she sometimes chases Bruno around the house but mostly she sleeps...eats and sleeps some more. Being indoor cats I'm aware that they don't get the same chance to exercise but just wondered if there is anything we can do to help?
Title: Re: Where has my baby boy gone??

Very bright eyed and gorgeous  :Luv2:

Bonnie's indoor and not chubby, plays with toys but not a great deal of running. She is 15 so maybe it's cos she is older that she doesn't put on weight?  Maybe she is just like some humans, can eat what she wants and not get fat  :evillaugh:  She has 2 - 3 pouches a day and biscuits and loads of Dreamies every day too.

Maybe throw something down the stairs that she will run after to make her get some exercise?  But do remember that cats are made to sleep, eat and be pamperd ;) ;)
