Title: Black and white male cat found in Walthamstow Village - RIP Frankie
Post by: sheilarose on April 06, 2014, 15:09:13 PM
This boy has been around for some weeks, he's now looking a little lame so I've started feeding him with a view to trapping him and getting him some vet attention. He's not feral - he's quite comfortable for me to approach and feed him but he won't allow me within touching distance yet.

He's a fighter, so unlikely to have been neutered.

I'm calling him Frankie for now.

 Awww Frankie is gorgeous :Luv2:

I wonder if he is some one's pet but not being neutered has wondered off and lost :( He must be living
 rough, poor boy.

I hope you manage to catch him , Sheila

I've just fed Frankie again Pav, he is hungry and now pops in daily for his grub. :drool; His back leg looks better than yesterday, he's not limping today, but he has that balloon middle and skinny haunches which I suspect to be worms not weight. Tomorrow's dose grub will be laced with Capstar then Tuesday's will contain a wormer.  :sneaky:

The boys aren't too happy as you can appreciate so it will be a matter of trap/neuter/release for Frankie until I can find a gullible suitable neighbour to care for him full time (Tuftyclub Stray Cat rules : I feed/medicate/insure/watch/worry whilst he wanders off and treats this place like a Hotel  :evillaugh: )

I now have my own trap and chip scanner (who just called me a mad cat lady?  :-[ ) so if I can catch him it will be a very quick turnaround. I'll set the trap on Monday next week, we should have established a routine by then.  :crossed:

He's bigger than I thought, he just squared up to Sly in the garden (amicable except for raised hackles) and Frankie is 10% bigger than me brave boy.  :scared:

Oh and I've worked out what is drawing me to him. He has that hunted look that poor Chubby had, who came to me in the exact same circumstances for those who remember that far back (my first ever post on Purrs!)   ;D

Just checking on gorgeous Frankie  :Luv2:

Hope he's been coming around for his food everyday and keeping every thing cross that you catch him Sheila

Having him neutered will change his life, if/ when you catch him is he going to be tested for FIV?

I have a feeling this year we are going to see lots of stray and unneutered cats around :( There are two big boys  here who are getting in to fights most nights over a little tabby girl. Hundreds of ads already on free site for free cats . :(
  :crossed:  for Frankie.

Oh I've only just seen this Sheila  :-[  Oh you and OH are such stars  :) :) :)

He looks to be a bit dirty so assume living rough  :(  Fingers crossed he will be chipped but somehow doubt it.  Great that you have your own trap and chip scanner.  Much impressed  :wow:

Hope things turn out OK for Frankie but so glad he has you on his side for now

Yes he's been popping by for his tea each night so I'm sure I will be able to trap him when I get the chance.

This is the scanner I bought from ebay which is great and works fine except I had to upload the software from a CD onto my old lappy as this one has no disk drive, and there's no on-line version which is a right old pain. However it works so I just need to dig out the old lappy once a month and update the scanner...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Halo-Microchip-Scanner-White-fast-dispatch-/151195079031?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2333edd177

On the downside, Frankie is marking all around the gardens and doorways so George is reciprocating indoors  So far George has targetted all over the kitchen counters and the bins  >:( Also Frankie is fighting with Tufty on a daily basis, so Tuffer's new Mum next door is less than impressed, but it's for the good of mankind/catkind.  :innocent:

OH is going mental about the indoor weeing, but hasn't put two and two together yet so is blaming George, not Frank. The sooner I get Frankie in the trap and neutered, the better for everyone.  :shify:

I have a plan - OH is off to Amsterdam on Sunday  :sneaky: - if I can get Frankie in a trap then, and book him a neuter appt for Monday, it will be a fait accomplis by the time OH gets home on Monday afternoon - all we have to do is keep Frankie in the shed overnight after his op then he can go free

Hopefully Frank will just wobble off home when he realises he's without his wherewithall  :evillaugh:

good work Sheila. one woman stray cat swat lady!

he looks very 'jowly' he's probably been running on testosterone for a while.
Could be sometime before the de pompom totally stops testosterone so he may well be up to stinky marking for up to a month yet. Unless of course he does toddle off thinking you may well start cutting some more bits off!!
good luck you xx

Spotted him yesterday, he looks to be thriving now, so maybe I'll leave him for a while. We have some issues at home just now with Pursley suffering from cystitis and George behaving badly, possibly triggered by Franks presence outside, I'll leave the trap in place and see if Easter brings an opportunity  :shify:

When I saw the pic I had to do a double take because he looks so much like my missing Fred, who is both neutered and chipped. But comparing photos, it isn't Fred who has a much more 'pretty' face. Very similar markings though. Also Fred's only been missing since 6th. (ONLY!!)

All is OK, Frank doesn't have a chip so will be off to the vet as soon as they can fit me in. My vet can't do him until next Tuesday so I'm shopping around for someone who can fit him in this week, before OH does his nut! frank is still swiped but will happily take food and treats very gently from my hand, then gets all scared again. He did a poo!  ;D

A bit worried tonight, he seems to be struggling to wee, although he's drunk precious little since arriving his pees are tiny. Have popped a 4kg dose of Metacam in his dinner, hopefully if he has started with a UTI this will stop it in its tracks.  :scared:

Nil by mouth from 10pm tomorrow, except his water which he can hang on to until Friday morning.

Thanks, he seems much better and happier tonight, I even got a few strokes in while he was stuffing his last meal before fasting  ;D

Always stressful when they're under anaesthetic, I'm working from home tomorrow so I can stay by the phone.  Wees and poos normal, if not necessarily in the right place  :-:

Still no response from various ads on NPR or local sites so he's now my responsibility. OH will defo divorce me if I suggest keeping Frank, so Frank will be released at the weekend if he's fit to go.  :luck:

Just added a pic of Frankie in his crate to the post below. He's really a nice little man, just getting comfortable with me sitting with him while he eats and happy for me to change his litter tray. Not sure how I'm going to get him in the cat carrier tomorrow and suspect he may lose all the trust we've gained so far  :(

It would be great if he stays around after his op. You are amazing Sheila

 Best of luck for today.
Title: Re: Black and white male cat found in Walthamstow Village
Post by: sheilarose on April 25, 2014, 09:47:58 AM
He's been good as gold, I opened the crate, he walked out, I picked him up and popped him gently in the box, no fuss at all. Very quiet all the way to the hospital until a rowdy staffie arrived at which poit he started growling, and this didn't stop. So his examination by third fave vet Alistair was a little tense but relatively painless. Apparently he has an exceptional pair of testes that may require slightly larger incisions than usual, so he may need to stay in just a few hours longer than "normal" to ensure the bleeding has stopped.
Good news is his heart and lungs seem fine so Frank should sail through his op.  :luck: :luck: :luck:

Thanks for the good wishes, I'm on pins for the rest of today and have to work, but I've also set myself the task of cleaning up the crate and surroundings before becomes home, so I must crack on.

Just had a call from the vet. Poor Frank, there was blood on the blanket when they took him out of the box - his bladder was blocked. They don't yet know what has caused it but have managed to express him for now, but without X-rays and urine tests it may block again quickly.

I've asked them to continue with the operation, as I'd be asked to pay anyway, and get his urine tested for crystals. I'll talk to the vet at 3pm to discuss his future, but if he's not a good candidate for release I fear his days are numbered.

Anyone want a big old bag puss with health issues? No didn't think so.  :(

Ah yes, I see Sheila - TNR - I'd forgotten, so understand your post better in light of that.

Title: Re: Black and white male cat found in Walthamstow Village
Post by: pappilon on April 25, 2014, 12:43:11 PM
Sheila, how old the vet think he is? Could the blockage been caused by the stress of being in a pen. Sorry if i am talking nonsense, dont have any experiance in cats with bladder problem but surely till now he has managed out there so he might be fine with TNR.

If it wasnt for our road i would have been happy to offer him a home, mine dont mind other cats but then he might not like them :(

Surely we can put an appeal here and on cc to find him a home.

Finger crossed its nothing serious .

I'm waiting to see what the vet says later, I'm in no doubt hubby will not have another cat here so he has to go, but the question is where will have the resources to monitor a cat with known tendency to block.

If he needs a special diet of SD and CD for weeks/months then I need to find him a home of his own or rescue space as it wouldn't be possible to monitor his diet as a street cat (which for those of you with long memories is how we managed Chubby after his TNR)

Keep everything crossed, a miracle may yet happen. It was Easter Monday he came indoors after all.  :innocent:

Vet says he's impossible to age, somewhere between 2 and 5 given his teeth are quite clean, but he won't commit so Frank has been guesstimated at 3 years old. If it had just been a bladder infection that has caused the blockage it may indeed be stress related, which would be fabulous news, and that's the reason I'm giving him the best chance by having the tests done.

My local rescue is blighted with FIP, so they have closed their doors. I can start phoning round the other rescues in the area but as it's kitten season I know they're all full to bursting again. It's so sad.

I won't give up easily on this boy but need to be realistic about his chances if he can't be returned to the streets or re homed safely.

Post by: SamMewl on April 25, 2014, 16:24:43 PM
oh sheila what a blow
although i am being hopeful that the blockage is an infection. if he was looking well (and he does in the pic) there has to be hope.
everything crossed here, when will you know the results Sheila?

Well he made it through the operation, :phew: so I can collect him at 5pm. OH is coming with me, he's softening enough to allow me some more time to work on Frank, so we have our breathing space.

Now I need that minor miracle for Frank, if I can get him up to full health and feeding outside within two weeks he can be one of my outdoor kennel cats and we can all live happily ever after. It's a long shot but there is still hope.

Should have the urine results by Monday night, Sarah.

Thanks for your support everyone, it really helps to have your input as I've become rather attached to this guy.
Title: Re: Black and white male cat found in Walthamstow Village
Post by: SamMewl on April 25, 2014, 17:06:21 PM
hi dawn,
the space for Binde was because we have a 'cats in immediate danger of death' waiting list. i was happy to put her on the list regardless of location as she was in danger of pts. we didn't have an actual pen for her but i could have delayed a foster return to make room (its what we would do if there was a cat at a local vets about to be pts)

i am hoping that frank is well enough to either live outside, or temporarily live outside at sheila's until a rescue place is available if that would work with him.

just so you know we have approximately 350 cats waiting for a space at YCR. when its life or death they can wait a little longer! they are all cats in desperate need of help though. had frank become a  'cats in immediate danger of death'  cat we would try and help and we will try if the situation changes and Sheila wishes that for him.  it may also be worth considering if he can be a housecat, if he is only happy as an outdoor cat then that will complicate things for him medically (if he does have stones rather than infection)  and re-coming to a place like ours (we tend to directly transfer feral-type cats)

hope that explains things xxx

So hope Franks results are good and young Frank can have a very long life cos he looks so gorgeous  ;D

The place that Binde was going to have was reserved for extremely difficult cats Dawn and while she was one I dont think that Frank qualifies  :'(

However with Sheilas OH softening that gives time and leaway I hope.

We're home, Frank looks great, so happy to be out of the box and back in his familiar crate. Whilst he was away I changed his blanket which was stinking of wee so he has definitely been urinating, I am rather congratulating myself for starting him on the Metacam early as that's exactly his prescription now. Vet says:

He's somewhere between 1 and 11  :shify:
He has been fighting all his life and is a mass of scars and has a couple of chipped teeth
He is 5.7 kgs and bigger than average
His heart and lungs are healthy and normal
He may have tumours blocking him because the catheter went in very easily and drained immediately, I have to monitor what he drinks and what he pees, and his demeanour if he gets uncomfortable again.

The bill was considerably higher than the usual neuter fee, but I trust these vets and know I will get the right advice and Frank will have the best care. :care:

OH says, Right You, No More Cats, Right?  :innocent:

Appreciate the thoughts about rescue places, I will only take one up if all other avenues fail, and at present we have options.

Frank, I think you're worth it.  :Luv:

There's blood in the crate this morning, he's licking his wounds which may be the source or it may equally be coming from his bladder again.  :scared:

Just going to give him his Metacam, he may take it direct from the syringe now he's more comfortable with me.

I'm so sorry Sheila.  You invest so much of yourself into your rescues: your time, your money, but most of all your heart, and I know how much you will be hurting.  Knowing you have done your best and saved Frank from a lot of suffering does little to ease your own pain at times like these.  Go easy on yourself and give all the Tufty club an extra cuddle tonight. :care:

 :RIP: Frank and Tango too.

RIP to Tango also and my condolences to your brother, Rosella.

I am so sorry to,read about Frankie and Tango

Such a lot of sadness and cancer in cats , I was beginning to wonder if it was something I was doing wrong !

They will journey to the bridge together and both were loved and Frankie had the best care at the end and couldn't have picked a better person to help him.
