This is Yul. He's turning 7 weeks tomorrow. He will come live with me tomorrow. He was actually born on my birthday. He will be my first pet in my adult life, unless you count the uninvited snails that live in my fish tank (which is not ready for fish).

Hi Newyorker - and a very warm Purrs welcome to you and to Yul (very handsome boy is Yul  ;D).

Bet you cant wait to have him home.  Today must feel like Christmas Day !  ;D

It's so exciting when you get your first pet, and boy you'll be in for some fun with a kitten  :evillaugh:

There's loads of info on here and everyone will be willing to chip in with advice if there's anything you need help with.  And even if there isn't, if you want somewhere to post piccies of your beautiful babe, then this is the place to do it - we love piccies, we do!)

What sort of fish will you have -  Marine, tropical or cold water?   We used to keep fish years ago.  Very relaxing to watch.   Now we just have loads of snails in the garden - and in the garden pond.   The ones int hegarden get rounded up every so often, popped in a bucket or tupperware tub, and are taken a way away from the house and released into the "wild".  I swear to the Gods they all come back again.  :evillaugh:

Anyhoo - let us know when Yul is home, and show us some more piccies (please)  :wow:

Have fun on the forum  :welcome: :welcome:

(And a belated "Happy Birthday too!)

Actually that was a typo I'm only bringing him home on Saturday. 3 more days of... Quiet. :)
I'm doing tropical fish, small shoaling types, probably a shoal of tetras and a shoal of Corys. Maybe dwarf loaches as well.

Aw - poo!   We've got to wait another couple of days....   :-:    :evillaugh:

Have you got any kit for him yet - I mean a bed (which of course he'll reject in favour yours  ;)) and feeding dishes and toys and stuff?

Just a thought - you can get a toy called a Flying frenzy toy - its feather on a sort of fishing rod affair.  brilliant for exercising and tiring out young hyper-active kittens.  :evillaugh:  Tan sells them in the Purrs shop if you're interested (no shameless plug, just think it's a great toy - we have an almost-five month old kitten, and he loves it, as does our 18 month old)

Make sure you cat proof everything you can in the house.  Think like a cat - what looks interesting to eat, bite, chew and explore.  If it's electrical or dangerous, secure it or move it.  If it's breakable, put it away fro the time being.  Keep the loo seat down, and the washing machine door closed at all times.  Kittens are like grease lightning - that's fast  :evillaugh:

I like tetras.  We used to have a Neon Gourami who would feed from your fingers.    :)

I have most things but the two different beds I ordered haven't been delivered yet. Though I'm getting the cat tree house thing they were using with the litter where he was born so I'm thinking he will want to continue sleeping in there.
I have toys, two litter trays, a tunnel, a cat fountain... I'm still doing research on what to feed though.
Do you confine a new kitten to a single room at first? That's what I've seen suggested.

Sounds like you have most of the bases covered.   :)

Food, I would give a good wet kitten food.  Am not a huge fan of dried food, although I acknowledge its practicalities.  Try and avoid anything with high grain percentages.  Grain isnt good for cats. But then again, it depends on what your pocket can afford.   As most rescues will tell you, they'll feed their cats whatever they can realistically get in terms of tinned and sachet foods.

As for whether or not to confine him to one room, a lot depends on his character, and your comfort zone.

For example, we've had three kittens in two years - two of the kittens we let have free roam of the house whilst we were with them, from the outset.  At night, we ended up taking them up to the bedroom with us, and for the most part they would snuggle down (generally lying across our heads on the top of the pillows.)   I know, I know - there will be many who say that's wrong, but it worked for us.  And I like snuggles.  :shy:

The kitten we have now, was a slightly different prospect.  We brought him home after losing our gorgeous Ross back in September.  Because we had an older cat, Tinks, we thought the introductions had to be strictly supervised, so confined Moray to one room initially, which became his den.  he still thinks of that as "his room" and retreats up there for peace and quiet, or if he's sulking (which he doesnt do often as he's a sweet natured cat  :Luv:)

I think a lot depends on the character of the kitten, and the size of your home, and what you like or dont like.    Ours is fairly open plan.  We made sure we went "exploring" each room with him, so he could spend time growing accustomed to them.

Within a matter of a couple of days he was confidently negotiating the whole house, upstairs and down.  Having said that, all three of the kittens we've had have been fairly confident and outgoing.

If the cat is less confident, then it may be an idea to confine him to one room to begin with, making it "his" room.  We used our spare bedroom, and put a litter tray in, with food and water at the opposite side of the room to the litter tray.   We also put his little bed in there, though he ignored it, and snuggled instead on the big bed, but as Yul is still only little, he may not be able to access anything too high up - save of course by mountaineering via the bedclothes, so dont put a good duvet on the bed if that's his game.   ;)

If you dont want him sleeping in the bedroom (and I appreciate some people dislike it, and it may not be practical) but are worried about him wandering about in the night, get him a cage, and pop him in the cage for night-time sleeps.  During the day, the cage can become his bolt-hole.  If you do that though, try and get a cage you can get a litterbox and a bed in, as well as a dish of food and water.

However you plan it, the kitten usually ends up doing his own thing and confounding your plans in that masterful way cats have of transforming our lives from what we think we want, to what they know we need  ;)

I do want him sleeping in my room for now. That's the room he will be confined in if I do that as well. I have a litter tray and a cat fountain in here, and another set in another room. I will put the climbing tree in an alcove in my room on Saturday when I get home.
My bed is quite high, though they do so well climbing the tree I'm not sure he will have any problems. I haven't seen him in 10 days but they said he grew a lot and he's definitely the foodie of the four.

Hello and  :welcome:

How exciting for you to be getting your first feline master! I bet the days seem long before Yul is with you, I suspect they will pass in a blur when he is home :).

It sounds as if you have got things pretty well covered. One thing I will say is that small kittens can get themselves into impossibly small places, so check and double check that there is nowhere he can get into mischief or - even worse - escape outside. They can also be impossibly quick too, especially when  a door is open when it shouldn't be!

Please keep us up to date with Yul's progress when he arrives.

I am lucky in that my house sort of comes with air locks. So escape really isn't likely as long as I remember to leave the second door closed. My concern is that this will make it a lot harder to give him access to the outdoors later if I decided to. I would need two, not one cat flap.

Newyorker, we have two cat flaps.  I love the term "Airlocks" - like yuo, we have an inner door, and an external door which form the access to the house.  We have a microchip scanning flap on the front door and until recently, had an ordinary staywell flap on the inner door.  We just replaced the inner flap with another scanner flap, but one that permits us to restrict Moray's access to the outside until he's much older, whilst Tinks can come and go freely.

The problem we had, was when we replaced our front door.  We replaced it from an old wooden door (which we were able to fit the flap ourselves) to a UPVC door.  Lucj=kily, the door company we got were extremely helpful, and even though they'd never done it previously, they agreed to manufacture the door with the flap aperture cut out for us, then when the door was fitted, their fitters also put in the flap for us.

I will also admit we have another cat flap in the door leading from the living room to the kitchen  :-[  If we ever move, I'm going to have to get a cat loving purchaser, or otherwise change the doors!

Hi and  :welcome: to Purrs. A new kitten, how exciting  ;D Yul is gorgeous  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2: not long now until mayhem and madness descend on your home, bet you can't wait. It might be a good idea to ask what Yul is currently being fed and stick to that for the time being, then gradually change it if necessary.

 :welcome: to you and Yul!

Our home is open plan too, but left the living room as their 'base' (we have 2 and got them as kittens) with litter, food, beds etc.

They didn't venture out of there for the first few days, then we let them explore at their own pace.

Is you bedrrom upstairs? (  ) as I dont think they ventured up ours for a couple of weeks if I remember rightly - I could be wrong tho....

Yes my bedroom is upstairs. There is only one other room upstairs, technically a bedroom, but it's sort of my "tv room" now so that's the other room I was planning to introduce him to first. The other litter box is there. I will get one for the kitchen eventually too, but I'm still deciding what kind of box. I get two very low, shallow open ones for now, so it's easy to get in and out. That's what he has been using with the litter. I mean the kitten litter. Not the litter box. Now that's confusing!!!

Got to say, am a fan of an open litter box too.  I know the litter gets kicked out, but I cant quite get away with the idea of a lidded box.
Title: Intro
Post by: thenewyorker on November 14, 2013, 13:29:16 PM
I put rubber mats under the trays and I have an extra mat for the third box when I get it. So he can kick it as much as he likes. My concern is that I do eventually want to bring a dog home as well... And I don't want the dog to have access to the cat poo buffet. For both of their sakes. I might have to find a way to keep the litter boxes at a higher level. But for now the more easily he can get in and out the better I think.

Dont think we ever had any bother with Tess and the litter trays, but I know some dogs do like to go hunting for treasures in there.

So pleased you're thinking of a dog too.   ;D  We lost Tess about 18 months ago - had to have her PTS at 14 due to an illness.  Since then, OH wont have another as he says he's too old, so I live my dog-loving side of life vicariously through friends and social networks.  :evillaugh:

Thanks! I haven't seen him since the day I took that photo but they said he's grown fastest of the four so who knows what he's like. I think I have everything ready. I'm still doing research on what to feed and what to use as treats. I plan to do a lot of clicker training with him so he'll be getting most of his food that way. (I'm a dog trainer and I've done some cat training but it's much harder for me because I just find it difficult to find food that cats will get excited about!)

Aw so pleased he's home with you, as for photos, leave your camera by the window, black cats photograph beautifully in natural light but hardly at all indoors.

He's still little so will feel the cold and needs a warm spot to sleep, so pop his bed near the heater, or get him a heat pad to go inside. He'll also start teething at around 4months so be ready with some chewy toys like rope or knitted items he can get to grips with.

As for treats, I find cold cooked chicken to be the most natural favourite, and the more moist you can  keep it the more irresistible it is.  Im sure whole foods do cooked chicken, and you can have some too  ;D

Natural light? I leave in Yorkshire. He'll be full grown by the time we get natural light here!
I need to get a white duvet... Well, duvet cover. He hides in the folds of my duvet and disappears. He's a very quiet boy. He is being very regular about play feeding and sleep time. I'm starting to predict exactly when he will curl up and fall asleep. Thankful he seems to like all of his beds. And mine too!

I don't know what colour he will turn out to be. You can see stripes under his fur but maybe they will disappear when the fur gets thicker? And he has a tiny patch of yet at the base of his neck in the front. There's a hint of red in the coat too like a rusty colour. His eyes are still very bright blue though. When does eye colour stop changing?

Eye colour change generally takes place around the three month mark.  You often find you can see a hint of red in the coats of black cats, especially if you get the sun on their fur.  Love that he has his stripes too - he'll probably keep those.   :Luv:

I would do it gradually - mix some of his existing litter tray material with the new stuff, gradually replacing with more of the new.  Alternatiovely, you could put the old cat litter in one litter tray and the new stuff in another, and see if he demonstrates a specific preference.    Cats can be quite choosy about the litter they like, so it may be a case of trial and error.

Definitely take more photos - they do grow so fast, don't they?  Moray's about half a size again to what he was when we brought him home just over two months ago   :)

Lol. He doesn't care for the tv to be honest.
Something odd happened today and now I'm wondering if he's teething already. He was nine weeks yesterday. I was cleaning some ice from the back of my fridge and a small piece dropped on the floor. He licked it and chewed it for a whole before loosing interest. I know dogs like to play with ice cubes but I'm not sure I ever heard of a cat engaging in such silliness.
Disclaimer: a stick of butter had been touching the ice so there might have been some butter in there. Yeah my fridge is messy.

He is using it, but not covered. I thought I would cover it gradually once he's using it regularly? I don't know if I'm underestimating him. It's a bit tricky to get into though, it's not a flap, you have to crawl under a hood and jump up. I think that's what's supposed to stop the dog. I'm not sure it will work on a terrier!

My black cat was very good for feeding.  She ate any meal that was put in front of her. Not the fussy type at all. I see no problems about having a black kitten or cat in the house.  They make lovely pets.

Yul was born in a house with four dogs so he was fine with them but the dogs were very tolerant of the kittens. Billy (he) is not. He has a lot of issues... He is in a local rescue handed in because of dog/lead reactivity. So they're really cautious about who they rehome him to... The cat is the least of his troubles!

In other news, Yul has made it to the kitchen counter now... It was more about figuring out a route though. He could already climb on the stools and it was close enough to jump. There's almost nothing left he can't climb on...

It is astonishing where kittens find their way too , every little nook and craney. You spend hours looking for them when the decide to hide. You need a rattley toy to bring them out into the open again. Something that attracts their attention. Poor Billy.  Hope he gets somewhere suitable soon.

When my last pair before Billy were kittens, they used to leap into my toy Yorkies basket and push him onto the carpet. They all used to race after each other. The dog was about 14 at the time they arrived on the scene. He lasted until he was about twenty. Must say they were really quite content living in the house together .

At that age, they don't see any danger. You have to be constantly checking that they won't get hurt or chew a mains lead or something. My one had a fad for wire radio aerials which he often broke. Still would if some were on show. You don't want to part with them for many a long year.

     that reminds me of  the "sand pit" story my Mum told me.  When I was very young (2 or 3 ) I had a sand pit in the garden that my dad made for me.  I used to spend many a happy hour building sand castles and mud pies until one day my mum realised that our 2 siamese's were also using the sand pit as a giant litter box!!!  Needless to say I was promptly remove from the pit and it was later designated as a "no go" area  until my dad had dismantled it.  It was several years later that Mum explained why I no longer had a sand pit to play in

They are just so lovely. I've been through these things with all my previous kittens. Dogs can't get on top of high things like cats can. It's best to have a toy just to distract them when you don't want them in certain places. My Billy is really placid and settled now some nearly eight years later. He is looking out the windows just now at the gales .

Billy is on home trial... Seeing whether I can manage his outdoors issues. Inside the house he's perfect... And they're really good together. They do chase each other but since they took turns I feel it's fine. Besides Yul only gets caught when he wants to. Billy's pretty slow with stairs with his little terrier legs so Yul is always one step ahead.

Our dog Tess got on really well with Paddy, our old cat, and prior to that, our previous dog Kindee doted on Paddy and Flynn, the other cat we had then.  When Kindee's eyesight failed and her hearing went, they used to act as her eyes and ears, and were very protective of her.  It's so lovely to see the friendships that can be forged between dogs and cats.   :Luv: :Luv:

The best thing you can do for a cat. They soon return to normal after a couple of days and it makes their lives much better.  They are still quite cheeky though . My Billy was sorted at eight months . He was back in the house five hours later. Groggy for the rest of the day , but soon made up for lost time . He is a real contented cat, seven and half years later, sitting in his tartan basket.

Exactly so.  Cats will always use their creativity and imagination - it might be his rubber ring for swimming, or he may be being the Captain of a Pirate Ship (oh, yes - I can see him as Captain of a Pirate Ship  ;)) or he might be facilitating the direction of a whole underground system from his superior position of power...... or - or - or.......  :wow:

Lol no I'm definitely not getting another one but I might foster for them if there's something suitable. With a dog and cat it might be a bit limited what I can do.
