Title: Hello from Wonkypaws and Heimdall
Post by: wonkypaws on April 23, 2012, 19:23:48 PM
Hi all

I have just joined and am looking forward to talking to you all.  I am very interested in feline behaviour and in understanding why they do what they do. I live with Heimdall (NFC, 5yo, neutered boy, indoor with a run), and we are very excited because in about two weeks, we think two kittens are going to magically appear in our house. Well, I am excited !

xx

omg he is just gorgeous!        Welcome to the forum.      I've got four young wegies myself brothers Kalle and Kyrre [everyone thinks they are girlies despite my telling them its Norwegian boys names!] , and brother and sister Karlo and Kaisa, plus a elderly persian and a middle aged mog.       Is it more wegie kittens you are getting?      Really unusual name he's got??????

Oh Thankyou!
It's the name his breeder gave him and we liked it so it stuck. He's the guy that guards the Bifrost Bridge apaprarently! Yes they are Wegie kittens that we hope to get soon. This will be the most cats I have had -  have had them in pairs before but the time has come to expand the gang.

Six cats sounds fun, and four Wegies too! I am guessing if I look around the forum I'll find pix?

Wonkypaws and Heimdall - welcome to Purrs!   :wow: :welcome:   What an absolute stunner you have - he's amazing.   :Luv2:  I love his name too.   :wow:

Wonder what he'll make of his two new siblings when they arrive?  :evillaugh:  he'll have to be all Fatherly and paternal.    :shify:

Hope you enjoy Purrs and find plenty to keep you occupied until your new babies arrive.

Thanks again everyone. We are expecting an interesting time when the babies arrive. He  has been on his own for 4 months (since we lost his brother) and although he is definitely lonely and more "needy" I don't think for a moment that it will be all sweetness and light from day one.  I might need your help then!

Thankyou - his head is getting a bit swollen with all the love on here. I think he knows something is afoot - there is a new cat tree now, so that everyone can perch somewhere, and a lot of things that look very interesting moving into a room he's not allowed in (the babies safe room).  So he is kind of watchful. I hope it's gping to be ok.

Cazzer - don't be jealous, you'll still have twice as many cats as me! and 1 more Wegie! I will post pics when they are settled in and happy.

Names? Groan - never decide a name by committee - even a small one. They'll be lucky if we agree on anything before their first birthday.

And thankyou JiJi.

ha you sound like myself and OH!   Names are such a trial for us given we want relatively authentic names.     Kalle and Kyrre were ok but we agonised for days over Karlo and Kaisa.      Eventually settled on them as Karlo is actually the Norwegian version of Carlo.     Its another version of Charles [as is Kalle!]    Kaisa we got from the dark materials trilogy which refers to Svalbard???????   something like that anyway which is In Norway [I think or someother Scandanavian country!].

Sorry  to take so long - I have been distracted  :innocent:

They are gorgeous, but taking pics is very hard, as they don't stay still! I have lots of pictures of tails if you're interested! I'll post some others later today. They seem to have settled in really well, are very brave and very keen to get to the rest of the house. They are eating like little horses, I had forgotten how much kittens eat!

Heimdall has seem them twice (with them in a carrier), and thinks that they are very scary. It takes him half an hour and a load of fuss to get over it but he does get over it so there is hope! It'll be a while before they are free mixing though.

Master Svartleheim Starlight Express of Team Svartleheim and the Clan cats he belongs to 2 very special families

He came to us after his breeder was notified that he needed to be gone and as she had just had a baby needed somehwere for him to be safe so he came to the Clan cats

he arrived in a very bad way and I have the scars to prove it and he ended up at my vet 24 hours later to be shaved and my wonderful vets shaved a few places and then he became the practice tool for the trainee vet nurses whilst he was still sedated, he hates being brushed and was underweight to and using a litter box was interesteing - 9 months on he is a different cat, he still tolerates the brishing, he uses a grit box with no problems, has more cats than he knows what to do with and has 6 very special friends in my last years tamed down feral kittens Sherbet, Kali, Miami, Houston, Monty and Jaffa and he is still trying to make friends with our rescue Bengal Porsche but she only loves the other rather large boy our Rescue Ragdoll Casper

He is a really wonderful boy ;D

Look at those paws! They are huge! He is a beautiful boy. Looks like you have done a fab job with him - he looks very happy and relaxed now. And fluffy! So sad he had some bad times but it sounds like he is in the best place now.

With regard to names, we are at the stage where anything I suggest my daughter vetoes. OH has got his head down, and I want him named by bedtime. Happy to take suggestions.....

what sort of name are you looking for?     I'd make life difficult for myself and try and get something Norwegian/Old Norse etc for him!     Sounds as though you don't need to add that complication into the mix though!      Iskrem = Norwegian for Ice, Bergen, Oslo, or I fancy calling a cat Pyrrha for Fire [maybe stretching point here as only red patches.......]!

I think something Norse would be very fitting.   :)

Sending a gentle ear tug for Heimdall as don't wannt him feeling left out.  He's too much gorgeousness of his own for that to happen.   :Luv2:

I agree that Norse would be very good.

Heimdall is sitting under the stairs right now, with the kitten in a big crate as they get their first prolonged view of each other. He is not impressed, every time he goes up to say hello, they bop his nose!

This is probably of no use to you at all, but I keep coming back to the name Magnus - yes I know it's also Icelandic but somehow I can't get any other name to fit him.

Love this thread.  :)

we were going to call either Kalle or Kyrre, Magnus at some point!     I think it qualifies as its on my list being the name of a NFC in Norway!

Lotties Stud NFC is called Orion he is a stunning pure white boy

Post by: wonkypaws on May 13, 2012, 16:06:03 PM
Quick update - we all like Orion, and also Magni. Magni was one of Thor's sons so as a variant of Magnus I think it qualifies.
Heimdall has managed to walk slowly in front of the kits with his tail up, although he is not going near enough to get bopped again. He won't speak to any of us but he isn't hiding, and he has managed to eat two Dreamies in the same room as them. They are all asleep right now,  and I need to get some other stuff done!

Post by: wonkypaws on May 14, 2012, 17:58:24 PM
Yes, Heimdall would avoid trouble rather than attack it! He did come back to sleep on our bed last night for the first time in a week and they aren't even in our room yet. He is very curious about the kittens - sort of plays Grandmother's footsteps with them until his nerve breaks and then he has to leave. I think we will let them meet each other for a short while tomorrow if all stays calm.
Title: Re: Hello from Wonkypaws and Heimdall
Post by: wonkypaws on May 16, 2012, 16:12:06 PM
Well, we have got to the stage where about half of the time all three cats are together but they need to be separated at times to let Heimdall have a rest, and at night time when we can't watch them. He would like them to be friends I think but he does not want anybody jumping on him, chasing him or bopping him. He has had to hiss a couple of times to get this point across but no raised paws so far. Anon is now officially called Aelfred (Freddie) and Bugsy is still Bugsy. Heimdall has had nice friendly sniffs with both of them but if they are being too lively he makes himself scarce. He likes sitting on his cat tree looking down on them but Bugsy in particular wants to snuggle with him and will climb up to be with him, so Heimdall will jump off, and Bugsy will think this is a chase-game.

He does have another friend, a black cat that comes and sits with him (on the other side of the fence) when he is in his run sometimes but I haven't seen them together since the kits arrived. I'd love to be a fly on the wall for the chat they have!

Heimdall's so sweet - he really is a gent, isn't he?   Paddy used to watch kittens with a mixture of bewildered interest and wary disdain, but you could see a very paternal side to him.  Sounds like Heimdall is the same, bless him.   :)

That is such a good description of him. I think he is trying to remember how to play as well. Even though he is only 5! Actually, it has gone much better so far than I expected.

Well it was going too well. Now Heimdall has decided that the littens are too cheeky and need to be put in their place (or kicked out of his?). So he is yowling like a banshee and grabbing them by the scruff of the neck whenever he can. They screech when he does this, and then my daughter bursts in to tears. :( I think he's just annoyed that they are in all his favourite places in the rooms that they share ( he has his run and one room to himself for now, and they have another room that they are not sharing with him, so that they aren't "on guard" all the time), and wants them to go away and is just the next phase of getting to know each other but I am not sure.

When do we interfere? Or do we let it all take its course?
Title: Re: Hello from Wonkypaws and Heimdall
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on May 23, 2012, 16:46:31 PM
I think you have to take this very very slowly cos the resident cat is obviously well put out and he has to know that he is still loved and wanted as much or more than ever.

I am sure it will come but could take months.

Its taken Misa months to come to a wopping understanding with Lupin and now its like Lupin has decided Misa is his hero cat and follows him around and looks up to him literally lol

Its Misa now mostly who sticks out gentle playful paw as Lupin walks past.

Sasa the grande dame has Lupin firmly in place with a look!

Wish I did LOL

Thanks Gill
Much better day today. They had a lot less time together and Heimdall didn't seem quite such a grumpy bear. Aelfred boxed him round both ears and he just ignored him! No yowling either today, just a couple of squeaks. (I'd squeak if I was their size compared to him). Bugsy mostly snuggles up to him if he can and Heimdall seems quite happy with that (Bugsy wants a hero cat too!). If the sun stays out for the rest of the summer then it will be ok because Heimdall will want to be outside and the kits don't know about outside yet, so everyone will be happy!
