Title: Latest foster cats Perdy - and all
Post by: Gillian Harvey on February 20, 2012, 17:41:08 PM
Little Perdy has been with me a couple of weeks now. She's 7 yrs old and was given up by owners (who'd had her since kitten) as she was distressed by the young children in the house and was spending all her time outside. She's a tiny little thing and so sweet and showing no signs of distress in cattery (peace and quiet lol!  ;) ) She's had health check and blood tests and is negative for FIV/FeLV, she does have sore mouth though and has been antibiotics for a week, but its still not right, so back on Wed, probably need a dental. She is so lovely and friendly and doesnt stand still for five minutes when I go in to see her - hence this photo - is the best of a bad bunch really as I can't get her to sit still long enough and she does the headbutting thing where all I get is an enourmous picture of her nose :evillaugh:

Yes, she's a lovely friendly tortie (and not a naughty tortie  ;) - at least, not that I've seen so far  ;) ) . Going to get her mouth checked Wed morning. Mind you, nothing is stopping her eating, to say she has a good appetite would be an understatement actually, she eats like a horse......got me thinking, she is very food orientated and meows her head off, while pacing up and down,  until I put her food down - hyperthryoid possibly? hmmm, will ask about that on Wed.

What's her coat like and what about her "ahem" toileting?  7 obviously seems very young for HT but agree worth asking about.  Wonder if she has not been eating regularly if she was outside a lot.  Trying hard not to be judgemental about previous owners as they may really have cared.

How did Perdy get on at the vets Gillian ?

How did Perdy get on at the vets Gillian ?

Thanks for asking  :thanks: Mouth is still sore, vet thought it may be due to a tooth thats come out recently, and given another course of antirobe, but booked her in for possible dental next week. The gum still looks really inflamed and the top teeth on that side have a lot of tartar. Poor little soul thats 3 trips to the vets in as many weeks, and another next week - still she's taking it all in her stride  :Luv:

How's Perdy cat coming along, Gillian? Did she have her teeth cleaned?
Title: Re: Latest foster cat Perdy
Post by: Gillian Harvey on March 06, 2012, 23:51:39 PM
Yes, she went in on Thurs last week, had to have one tooth removed, the rest scaled and polished. She's been on antirobe since, and check up today - but the sore part of her mouth still looks red and inflamed, so vet has given her another 2 weeks worth of antibitiotics! Poor little thing, she's been to the vet rather a lot since she's been with me  ;) Each time they weigh her - and each time she's put on more weight, vet told me today that it was probably enough weight on now  :evillaugh:

Perdy is back to the vets this week to see if her mouth is getting better - hoping this photo will find her a new home once its on the Trust's website  ;)

Very disappointed - Perdy's mouth is still inflamed on that one side - and a red line of gingivitis still there, despite nearly 3 weeks of antirobe. Its only one side - the other side of her mouth looks fine. Vet has said in the absence of any other worrying symptoms - i.e. not eating, losing weight, glands up etc - then she would be happy for her to go up for rehoming - she certainly is happy and healthy otherwise, eating fine, going out in the garden now and having the time of her life, climbing trees!  Think its just something I need to keep an eye on, and when rehoming, make sure knew owner knows about the issue and maybe even the Trust might be prepared to pay towards any future dental probs, will have to ask about that.

I wonder if changing her food to Classic, as recommended on Dr Addie's site, might be worth a go?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh a red line, so pleased you mentioned this..............my old vet wanted to take all Sasas teeth out cos of a red line and I said no.

She eats etc without a problem.

So pleased that Perdy is doing so well  ;D

She's super, Gill.  :Luv2:

I wonder if her teeth are resorbing - she's a litle young for this but as she's tiny I wonder if she got less than her fair share of Mum's milk so her teeth may be soft.

My vet refused to extract Pursley's resorbing teeth because they get very brittle and usually snap instead of extracting cleanly - which then entails major root removal surgery instead of simple extraction. Pursley's back teeth have now happily resorbed (ie disappeared/dissolved on their own) so she no longer has the Red Line. She always ate without problems so we were happy to go along with the vet advice.

wow shelia that is a new one on me but does make me wonder, our amber is very small and has the tinest teeth ever we think she wasn't terribly well norished before she came here, she is the only cat we have who will tear plastic bags to get to food
Title: Re: Latest foster cat Perdy
Post by: Gillian Harvey on March 31, 2012, 14:32:59 PM
Not sure Sheila, but Perdy's teeth are actually very clean on one side - and the vets didnt find any problems when extracting the one tooth on the other side. It looks to me (when I get the briefest of glimpses lol!) that the top 'fang' may be hitting the gum below and suppose could be causing this inflamation to continue? just my theory.

My vet has just given me some Dentasept for Ebony which apparently is good for gingivitis, so might try some of that with Perdy - hmmmm, well vet could hardly open Perdy's mouth so don't know if i've got much chance

Poor Perdy is poorly  :( Will be taking her to the vets tomorrow - she was a bit subdued yesterday evening, didnt eat her tea (very unusual!), then through the night she'd had the runs, and today she's been subdued again and not eaten much.

Have just put something about it in the insurance thread.
Debating on taking him to the vets , but he isn't ill and is eating fine.

when tilly came from her breeder she was like this - bengals do have a reputation for runny bums but I wasn't happy about it, the vet ran loads of tests and couldn't find anything wrong with her - she was only allowed rc sensitive for two months and then wet food was reintroduced, she has been fine ever since - I still have no idea what it was and it could be a co-incidence but it worked out for us in the end

Perdy's not had a problem before - this has come out of the blue. Vet gave her some promax at the surgery - Perdy was promptly sick when we got home  :(  I've got some hills i/d, but she's not touched it, have got some chicken cooking to see if that will tempt her.

the poo problem sounds awfull ...has she had any meds that may have caused a reaction?
Im no expert im afraid on cat illnesses..... :-[
Mo had so many mouth problems ....i did read that yeo valleytype  bio stuff could be good for settling sore mouths but never tried it in end....apparently its good for neutralising the bad bacteria in the mouth?

give her a hug from me..she must be feeling awfull poor girl

thanks  :thanks:

Well she had been on antirobe for about 3 weeks prior to/following a dental, but those finished over a week ago, and hadnt caused any probs during the time she was on them.

She doesnt seem to be getting any better - she's not eaten at all again today (just licked some gravy off the i/d) and I tried her with some cooked chicken - she didnt want to know. She didnt use the tray yesterday and so I thought things might be improving, but this evening she's produce more bloody diarrhea  :(

I don't get this - one day she was fine, normal happy chatty cat - next day these awful runs and no appetite  :(

\just some thoughts

3 weeks is a long time to be on abs and this may have killed the good bacteria in her stomach and need some thing like protexin but she needs to eat to have it................I dont know what promax is though

Could her mouth actually be causing her pain and causing her not to eat?
Title: Re: Latest foster cat Perdy
Post by: Gillian Harvey on April 06, 2012, 22:47:50 PM
Yes, its a thought, the antirobe was to try and clear up the inflammation in her mouth, and its about a week since she's been off it - so I guess it could be that. Our Trust coordinator (also long time fosterer) mentioned viral diarrhea which takes a long time to clear up - but its not just the diarrhea, its the total lack of appetite. The promax is a probiotic paste by the way.

She has had a lot happen since coming into rescue in Feb, her owner had already started her course of vacs (cat flu and enteritis) before she came in, then I took her for her second vac, then she had a week of antibotics because of her mouth, after which there was no improvement, so she had a dental (one tooth removed) followed by another 2 weeks of antibitoics. Maybe its all been too much for her poor little system to cope with? Going to try and book her in to vets again tomoz.

Vet kept her in for blood/urine tests. He's just phoned to say her bloods are showing liver inflammation, they are putting her on a drip  :( and see if she improves, nursing care, appetite stimulants etc, over the weekend. Pancreatitis was mentioned - but does that just appear from nowhere? I though that was something that appeared over time?

Hmm Pancreatitis....killed my Dad 20 years ago :'(

Isn't this her first ever blood test?

Any prior knowledge would only have come from prior blood tests so you're the first one to care enough to get this done, ergo the first one to hear this news  :(

All the symptoms are there, though...

Perdy seems to be fine now, in case anyone was interested. In this rescue section we are all doing our little bit for cat rescue, it would be nice if we all got the same amount of support from members as some other rescues here do.

Not really. She was kept in on a drip overnight and the next day, then they phoned to say she'd started eating again and I brought her home, and she's been eating fine ever since. They didnt want to see her again unless of course she went downhill again. Her poos are still not quite right, but nowhere near as bad as they were and vet did say that might take a while to settle. Pancreatitis is still a possibility as I understand it can come and go.

Thanks to those who have posted  :thanks:

Gillian, I have a suggestion...hope you don't mind. Some of the rescues have a kind of Main Post for updates and news which makes it so much easier for the rest of us onlookers to keep abreast of developments. I wonder if you might want to do something similar?

Purrs is vast these days and I often miss posts, which I find a little frustrating, but how many times do you see the phrase "how did I miss this!", often too late to have an effective or useful response  :-[

How about starting a single new thread for updates on all your charges, with a few gorgeous Fluffy Persian photos thrown in  :sneaky: :naughty:

Hi Gillian, I hope you don't mind me asking, but do you foster privately or for an 'organisation'? My  work hours are so long, that it wouldn't be viable for me. But I have the utmost respect for all those who do and I like to offer whatever help I can.  How is Perdy now? My friend nearly lost her kitty to Triaditis in Feb,but MaiTai is now fighting fit again!

Nice idea Sheila  :) - but we don't have a rescue centre as such - all our cats are fostered either in the fosterer's own home, or in cattery pens in our gardens, spread around North Wiltshire - so I wouldnt have much of a clue whats happening with other fosterers cats, except what I read about them on our website or if I chat to another fosterer on the phone, so wouldnt be much of an update with just my current 3  :)

Lilli (how mad are you? lol!) I foster for Cats Action Trust (N&W Wilts) http://www.catsactiontrust.speedycheetah.com/ - oh, and the cats you see on our website are just the ones ready for homing. We have about 10 fosterers, each of whom will have several other cats in their care being assessed, vet checked, blood tested etc before going up for rehoming.

We have hardly rehomed at all these past few months and our fosterers are always full to capacity, sometimes beyond full! I have often had my double cattery pen full, my grooming room housing 1 cat and my office housing another! My current three, Perdy age 7yrs - been with me since Feb, Shadow age 6yrs - been here since Dec last year, and Chico (FIV+) age (approx) 10yrs - been here for nearly 2 YEARS!! There are threads about all of them here, but here's photos of Chico and Shadow just to remind you  ;) My fosters in my cattery pens are all able to go outside in the garden during the day because I don't like keeping them cooped up inside for months on end. Chico doesnt roam free in the garden but gets to out on a harness, he lives part of the time in my shed, which was hastily converted to a pad with run attached specially for him, and he gets to come in to my office at bedtime.

I never tire of seeing the lovely Chico :Luv2: and as everybody knows I'm a sucker for black cats so Shadow hits the mark with me too.
It sounds like all the accommodation is really 5 star at yours Gillian.  I remember when you converted Chico's bacherlor pad.

Oh I am pretty mad (I'm also Irish  :naughty:  ) but its ok as long as I take the tablets  ;)  I would love to to foster, but aside from being out 11 hours a day, I just know I would end up keeping them all! Chico certainly looks like a streetwise boy - very handsome in a rugged way! Shadow is just beautiful. Like Carol I too have a soft spot for black cats. My black lady Lilli has an aversion to other black cats however!
Thank you for the details and photos. And I'll investigate the site more tomorrow. X
Bronagh

I love Chico, he's my kinda cat  :Luv2: Rough and Tough and just scrummy gorgeous. If only I didn't already have six ruffnecks... (and two dainty lady cats!).

My little FIV boy does roam about the garden, but he's too long in the tooth to be a nuisance to anyone these days. He just potters out for his poo (and a furious dig in the garden) then flakes out on the bench or goes back to bed for the day  :Luv:

Shadow is swoonie  :Luv2: and looks very soft and shiny.

I'm pleased for Perdy but it's still a mystery what caused it  :scared: . I've never heard of Triaditis, off to look it up while things are quiet here.

Needless to say if I had seen it on time I would have sent some healing headkisses for the beautiful Perdy :care: and some  for her wonderful carer

Glad to see she has perked up and fingers crossed you pick up on the rehoming front too :crossed:

Its all happening at once for Perdy and Shadow  :wow: A lady came to see Perdy on Saturday and absolutely loves her, so I'm doing home check on Friday. Another lady came to see Shadow an hour later on Sat, and she wants her, so she's coming to collect her on Friday! So both my girls will be leaving at pretty much the same time - after all that time they've been with me! funny, how its just suddenly happened for both of them.  :)

Gillian this is wonderful news  :wow:

I have to say I admire you, after all this time it must be so hard to wave them goodbye. Maybe, at last, your luck is starting to change?

So pleased for Perdy and Shadow Gillian.  Love the pics of Chico and Shadow by the way  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Each time I see a pic of Chico I have a slight intake of breath.  He really is a stunner and can't help but remember his 1st pic which was so upsetting.  Truly amazing turnaround and so hope he finds a forever home altho imagine parting with him will be a very painful affair.

Wow, that's great news - as you say, what a coincidence for them both to find their forever homes.
:Luv: Chico, what a handsome boy.

Thanks all  :thanks: I am really going to miss these two, they are almost part of the family really, pottering round the garden. They are currently, both laid out on the patio  :Luv: Its bittersweet in a way, as these will be my last foster cats - I won't be taking anymore, although I will continue to foster Chico until such times as he finds a home, as long as that takes really. I need to focus on my business and although I've loved fostering and helping all those cats, its time consuming when I'm trying to run a business and develop it more. So when Perdy and Shadow go - I will have fostered and rehomed 20 cats and kittens in the 2 yrs I've been fostering. Not and easy decision though and there's been a little bit of gentle persuasion to get me to change my mind  ;) maybe to just take a break for a bit and come back to it - but I didnt think it was fair to say I want to stop for a while and leaving the Trust in limbo, wondering if I would come back - so I thought a clean break (ish - apart from Chico of course) would be best.

Sad you are stopping and reckon Chico will be with you ummmmmmmmmm even longer  :innocent:

I am sure you need a break and your businees brings in the dosh and has to come first

Maybe one day you will decide its time to start again but until then....................you have done a great job with looking after and homing so many

Can only echo this Gillian, 20 cats - and hard to home ones at that - is something to be proud of  I hope you will be able to go back to it in the future but like you say, it will be a nice surprise for them if you do rather than the pressure being on you as they expect you to do so

After the year you've had, Gillian, I'm amazed you lasted this long!

I hope you are very proud of your achievements, and yourself   ;D 8)

Meanwhile, If I ever get a space, there's a home here with Chico's name on it too  :innocent:

Hope you enjoy getting back to busines as usual. Good luck  :wow:

Might take you up on that Sheila  ;)

Well, Shadow went off to her new home just now. Unfortunately Perdy's home check didnt work out, nice people, but I had concerns about the B road that their garden backs onto - Perdy is very agile and would be up over their garden fence in no time - I didnt feel happy about rehoming her there, so she stays here for the time being. Funnily enough the lady who came for Shadow may possibly also be interested in Perdy - she met Perdy when she came to see Shadow and had wondered, if Perdy's home hadnt worked out, whether she might think about having the both of them  :) but she wants to see how Shadow settles in first before making a decision.

That's a shame about Perdy's homecheck but you have to go with your gut  Would be wonderful if Shadow's new Mum succumbed  ;D

She's still with me. Shadow's doing well and her new owner was getting her jabs done ready for her to start going out - not sure if she will still think about taking on Perdy as well.
