Title: Urgent Appeal for RTA stray cat
Post by: RACR on December 27, 2010, 13:17:49 PM
On the 26/12/10 we was handed in a black cat in a terrible state by a lady in Hyson Green area. She had let her dogs out and the cat crawled in.. Upon arriving it was apperent this boy is very badly poorly and injured with possible RTA.. We settled him with IV fluids under the skin, glucos IV, metacam and anti biotics.. He had puss oozing from his eyes, back legs splayed, dehydrated, very thin and a possible fractured/broken jaw..

Today (27/12/10) we took him straight to our vets where our vet confirmed RTA, damage to right eye, his intestines had come ut internaly, broken jaw and possible other internal injuries.. He is now admitted and under going surgery to replace intestines, wire his jaw and anything else surgicaly that is found and possible to repair. We still don't know yet if he will pull through as it depends on what other damage internaly is found. After surgery he is going to need alot of intensive care given to help him recover with alot more vet visits. We are hoping his eye will heal but there is a chance if it doesnt he will have to have it removed at a later date.

This boys operations now and future ongoing treatment to help him recover are going to cost alot of money! Funds are currently dry and we already have outstanding vet bills. If anyone can help towards funds, no matter how little to help us cover costs for this boy to carry on receiving the treatment he needs we would hugely appreciate it.

You can donate eith via paypal to racr@btinternet.com or by cheque postal order made payable to RACR or by paying direct into our bank at any Lloyds TSB branch or bank transfer.. Please message us or email racr@btinternet.com for details.

We have named him Felek which is latin for lucky..

Thank you Pete x

His eye is bright yellow/gree due to the dye put in by the vet to look for damage. That is the eye severly damaged and bulging slightly that will have to be removed :(

Update 30/12/10: Felek has been to the vets today. His eye looks to of
improved some so a possible chance it can be saved, fingers crossed. The
vet has decided to leave his hip another week to see if it can heal by
itself.. If not he will need reffering to a specialist for an
operation.. We can only have this operation done if we can ...raise enough
funds if it is needed!! We are due back next (5/01/11) to check on

You got to admire Feleks temperment you really have.. Despite how much pain and prodding and poking, he will growl and hidd to high heaven to say leave me alone but doesn't ever lash out..

Bless him and you for caring for him.

I wondered if he does need an op for his hip, whether you have asked around the local vets to see if any of them had specialised in bone ops. We did this with a cat missing who dragged himself home for 10 days with 2 broken back legs and a broken hip. The regular vet said a specialist but a senior partner of another vet was a bone man. He reviewed the xrays and operated on the cat - although a leg was amputated as the severe break in one of the legs had been healing for 10 days but the hip was easily fixable.

The cat made a full recovery and with the discount probably cost a 1/3rd of the price of a specialist. So that may be worth a try or whether a specialist would take the cat on at "cost" only.

Hmm yes. I think I might phone round some vets.. I know Amivets are specialised in alot of things so can ask them..

I've had an email today and a lady is coming tomorrow as she thinks Felek could possibly be her cat thats been missing 2 months.. She has described him well and said he answers to the name jack which he has responded to (but then i know alot respond to sound also rather than specific name)

I have explained to her everything and that i will not let him back unless she can gaurentee she can and will continue and pay for further treatment needed for him for his hip and eye that still needs seeing too.. I am concerned that she hadnt had him neutered (if it is her cat) and would vet care carry on for him..

I am really pleased with Feleks recovery from 1st two operations so far!! God he is a fighter alright! passing stools normaly now, eating well and managing to move better on back legs and hip.. Loves attention and cuddles.. Still worried about eye though, still swollen and bulging very slightly and he cant see much with it at all so hisses at shadows. You have to talk to him when approaching him so he doesnt hiss with worry.. Im not sure his eye can be saved..

We have had some wonderful donations towards his vet bills so far.. If anyone can still make a possible donation to help still as we are a long way off yet.. I will get the vets to print off his treatments so far and scan to pc when we go back on wednesday. Thank you for the donations xx

Oh and I will get some more photos of him also :)

05/01/11: Felek is at the vets again today. He is having another xray today to re check hip/pelvis and to make sure intestines and bladder are still intact internaly.. He is also being neutered today. He is blind in the right eye through trauma and there is still some uleration there but thats clearing up. Going to leave the eye a little longer to see if it fully heals. Will update again later when I go collect him and we know more from Xrays.

Felek has been castrated.. Xrays show the hip/pevis is knitting back together on it's own. It is now sit and wait and he is due back in 3 weeks for a check up and wire to jaw to be removed. We will then start vaccinations.

06/01/11

Photos of Felek today. Still looking a little rough bless him but he has come along way. He is having trouble passing stools now so on Lactulose to help.

12/01/11 Not much to update really. Felek is proving the fighter he started out to be and doesnt let anything get him down at all. He adores human company bless him. I am letting him out the hospital cage more and more each day which he is really enjoying and he seems to like to help me out and be at my side. Below are some photos from today and if it works a video clip :)

24/01/11

10.00am: Felek is at the vets now and his having wire removed from his jaw. Our vet is also doing another xray to recheck his pelvis and doing a stimulated feed just before xray to check his inestines are still running smoothly after the operation. Though he is blind in his right eye the eye is clearing up and though looks cloudy and different we have decided not to have it to removed. Felek has also had his 1st vaccination today. I will add an update later when we have him back.

18.32pm and felek is back with the all clear! Wire removed and intestines all fine. Felek is now ready to find a home of his own. I cannot beleive 4 weeks ago this boy came in in the terrible state he did, thinking he wouldnt pull through. In this short time he has fought every paw of the way to recover and suceeded.

WELL DONE FELEK!!!

I will do a photo shoot tomorrow :)

Hmm maybe so, But I think Felek plays a huge part in this with his will and fight to survive. Without that spirit in him I asure he wouldnt of made those first few days especialy! Our vet is stunned by his progress and fight for life :)
