Post by: sabrinabitzer on September 08, 2010, 16:33:00 PM

I live in Germany now so cant look after her again  :( I hope someone can help me. Lia is abou 1 year and 5 month old. She has got a tortoise shell, brown and black, domestic long hair. She doesnt have any special markings but she has got a crochip. The number is 9000 88 000 195 671

How awful for you

A couple of things, do you mean 'Bishops Stortford (rather than Stratford)?

When you say "I live in Germany now so cant look after her again" do you mean that you couldn't look FOR her again (due to being back in Germany) rather than you can't look AFTER her (ie you are not able to keep her if she is found)?  Sorry,  I appreciate that English isn't your first language but the two mean different things

Are your chip details up to date with the microchip company so if she is found and scanned can they contact you.

I would advise the local rescues - Cats Protection (CP), RSPCA and independent ones that she is missing in their area so if she is found they will be aware of her. If it's Bishops Stortford that is in Hertfordshire and here is a list of rescues in that area - http://www.catchat.org/adoption/herts.html

I really hope she is found safe and well

hi

i am sorry for my mistakes. Yes I meant 'Bishops Stortford´and I meant that I couldn't look FOR her again.. :)  The microchip details are up to date with the company.

I was living in the Uk before I moved back to Germany taking Lia and her sister with me.. On the way to Germany Lia escaped .. Now her sister lives here without her. Its very bad :( I really hope someone find her.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Best wishes

I've changed the title for you  It must be such a worry with her being so far away and you being unable to look for her

Do you know anyone in Hertfordshire that could look for her or were you just passing through?

I would email her photo and chip details to all the rescues on that link (most have email addresses).

I don't know if you would be able to afford this but there is a company in the UK that will make and distribute posters/flyers of her and knock on doors looking for her/asking if anyone has seen her. If Lia is insured it may well be covered under your pet insurance - http://www.animalsearchuk.co.uk/

Oh thanks I forgot about the title   :innocent:  I was living in Lincoln, I just passed through Hertfordshire to stop at the motorway services.. So unfortunately I dont know anybody there. I have already contacted a few organisations but I cant stop to try everything I can. So your information are really helpful!! Thank you so much!

You could email a poster (in Word document format) to the Welcome Break service area to see if they will display one for you - birchanger.enquiry@WelcomeBreak.co.uk

The poster could have her photo, date lost, circumstances, your contact details (do you know anyone in the UK still that would be happy to put their UK mobile number on the poster as some people might be wary of ringing an overseas number), chip no etc

I really feel for you

Oh my goodness how awful for you ... my heart goes out to you.

Do you still have friends / relatives in the UK who can help you with the search.

What date did she escape?

Do you use facebook.  If so you can put something on there (if you post the link back here we can then circulate via our facebook pages).

I woudl also recommend putting a post on the National Pet Register http://nationalpetregister.org/index.php

So sorry Sabrina  :(

We will help all we can to get her info out. I will put her on our news flash on the home page and if peeps can face book that's a great way to spread news.

What about contacting  local newspaper? http://www.hertsandessexobserver.co.uk/Home/

This is the post:  http://www.catchat.org/discus/messages/7/249094.html?1283980746

I've put the post and her picture on my Facebook page so hopefully it will spread amongst my friends.

That is a good idea - can't remember how much they charge but it is a full search and rescue service:
http://www.animalsearchuk.co.uk/search_and_rescue.php

Also now you are back in Germany is the microchip details showing your correct details so you can be contacted and Lia registered as lost in uk.

If any help is needed registering Lia missing with local vets/rescues - happy to start telephoning them tomorrow as Sabrina probably does not know the area.   Just let me know if you want me to do that.

Sabrina I have just sent a message to someone who has found a tortoiseshell cat in Kent http://www.nationalpetregister.org/fp/3952.htm

There is no photo but they think it's a female cat and I have asked them to get in touch with you if they think the cat is Lia.

Fingers crossed and big  to you.

Excellent Tan.  I have just a quick search and it seems there is a Days Inn hotel at (or very near) to the services.  I will send them an email and a lost poster tomorrow when I get to work.  If I was a missing kitty I would head for somewhere quiet and a hotel has nice quite grounds and lots of bushes to hide in.

Tan - Trigger's post about getting Animal Search to do a search and rescue of the area was a good one. Especially as Sabrina has no-one in the area that could look for Lia. Here is the lnk again:

Maybe she could contact Tom at Animal search.?

HI Edd hun

I have emailed Sabrina the Animal Rescue site link to get in touch with them. :)

It's a small world, She lives in the same town in Germany that my dad's best friend from his school days (and is still best friend now) lives. I have been there many many times :)

Sorry to hear about Lia - I hope she is found safe

Just a random idea, but Bishops Stortford is twinned with Friedberg http://www.friedberg-hessen.de/ - I just wondered if you could contact someone there that may be able to find some help from their contacts in Bishops Stortford. It would be good publicity for them.

Sorry if it seems a crazy idea, but anything is worth trying and may create some publicity.

I was thinking wouldn't it be great if it was the same place. I know it is a long shot but you never know. If a mayor or similar was involved, stops might be pulled out to find Lia?

I have only just seen this thanks to the 'news' article at the top of the web page.  I live relatively near there and will be passing through that junction on Saturday - I will take some time out to have a swing into the services and have a look around.

Edited to add: I have just had a look on google maps and there is a golf course right behind the services as well - have you tried contacting the course owners and asking them to put up posters?

There are also some residential streets nearby the back there - if you can do a small leaflet with some contact details I'll happily print off a batch and do some deliveries in some of those nearby roads.  Send me a pm if I can help and I'll give you my email address.

I hope Sabrina sees this and gets back to you in time, she hasn't logged on since posting the original message and her email in her profile is hidden. I don't think she'll have the PM function available to her yet as a newbie, perhaps you could PM Tan and see if she has any info she can pass.

Hi Tan,

I have spoken to Sabrina by email, she has sent me some photos which I will make into posters/leaflets tomorrow - as I am a native English speaker it is probably easier for me to do that, and we'll also add my contact details as people might be more inclined to get in contact with someone local especially if they're not sure if they've seen her.

I'm working from home tomorrow so I can ring the council, the golf club and the hotels, local vets etc, and on Saturday I'm going to take posters to the services and any hotels there, and to the golf club - and ask them there to make sure the groundsman knows, as if she is still in the area she may be spotted by golfers or grounds maintenance staff.  Then I can do some leaflet dropping in some of the nearby roads depending on how much time I have.  Can you think of anything else, I'm trying to think what I would do if it was my cat, as I feel so sad for Sabrina feeling so helpless in another country  :'(  If she is found and scanned, will the chip pick up details from abroad, or should I contact rescues in the area as well?
Title: Re: Lost Lia at Welcome Break Service - M11 Bishops Stortford, Herts
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on September 15, 2010, 21:44:48 PM
That's so lovely of you fluffybunny

The golf course/groundsman is an excellent idea as she may well be hiding out there and there will be people out and about who may have seen her.

I'm fairly sure scanners pick up foreign chips but given Lia's age I'm wondering whether she was chipped in the UK as she's only a youngster so may have been born here.

Edd had kindly volunteered to ring vets/rescues if that was needed - so maybe you could pass the info to Edd and see if she is still up for doing that

If any help is needed registering Lia missing with local vets/rescues - happy to start telephoning them tomorrow as Sabrina probably does not know the area.   Just let me know if you want me to do that.

It would be amazing if the collective effort of Purrs members could help find her and get her home, must be agonising for Sabrina being so helpless and far away  :(

I think she is chipped in UK but i am sure Sabrina will pop on to let us know :)
I think Sabrina contacted the rescues in area but not sure which ones.

Lia must be out there somewhere and prob quite near too, The golf grounds do sound hopeful as it will have shelter.  It's been quite a while now so i so so hope she is ok.  :scared:  :Luv:

Ok no problem it seems as if the rescues are covered then, plus if she has a UK chip then rescues/vets should hopefully be able to get in contact anyway if she does turn up.

I guess a silver lining of her being longhaired is that her coat may start to show that she's stray, whereas last week people may have seen her and not realised she was lost.  I do hope she is still somewhere nearby and can still be reunited with Sabrina.  I will definitely focus on the golf club on Saturday too, I think that's the most likely place that she will be.

Thank you so much for doing this ... I wish I was nearer to coe and give you a hand.  If I can be any  help just let me know.  If you need any posters printing off I can do that and post them to you.

Right well I've been worrying about poor Lia ever since I found out about her, so I've been up to the services this evening for a look around.  No sign of her unfortunately, and I can see how Sabrina could have been looking for hours, there is so much undergrowth and so many nooks and crannies, most of which are fenced off.  I'd thought going after dark might be quieter with more chance of seeing her if she is still in the area, but it's still so noisy there - it's basically at the end of the runway so there's a constant supply of planes taking off and lots of noisy traffic movement, lights etc.  I spoke to the duty manager in the Days Inn, who was just lovely.  She told me where all the bins were kept but said that because it's a 24hr services there is always a lot of crashing about so she probably wouldn't go there.  She also thought the most likely place for her was to have headed over towards the golf course and houses beyond it - so that's definitely going to be the place to go leafleting on Saturday.  She's taken my details and will let me know if she hears anything at all from staff or guests.  There were an awful lot of bunnies hopping around the edges of the premises so she should at least be ok for food.

I've also contacted E.Herts council who confirm that they haven't picked Lia up from the roads and when they do find them, they do scan all animals for a chip.  I've emailed the golf club (although I haven't had a reply) and asked them to notify their grounds maintenance staff and to put a poster up in their staff room/club member notice board.

So sadly nothing more to report; I think all we can do now is hope that the leaflets can get some local residents to keep an eye out and hope that Lia makes her way towards the houses.

That's so kind of you to go looking for her fluffybunny  It's a shame there's been no sightings but as Sabrina is so far away it's almost impossible for her to 'spread the word' so at least people will start to become aware of her now.

I emailed all the local PCSO's asking them to keep an eye out when they're out and about and gave them my mobile number so fingers crossed.

the promising thing is that golf courses are reasonably quiet places, where more people walk than rush around, so if the club will put up posters where anyone setting of on a round sill see them they will be in an ideal position to spot a cat wandering around

OMG  Just had a call from a family who lives near the M11 and they have been given my number from the email i sent the local paper in the Area.

They have been feeding a "diff" colour cat for about 2 weeks who is "living" in their tree at the back of their house. They have a cat of their own so they haven't let him/her in but they say it is a young cat and quite scared.

They live down the M11 near a bridge but about 8 miles so not sure but i sooo hope this is Lia.

I have  emailed them a pic of Lia to see if they say it's her so hopefully in a mo will have their reply or call again.

Keep ya fingers crossed hunnies

It's a young tabby.

It was the local Observer that gave them my number so they must have it advertised or the family rang them.

Oh what a shame it's not Lia  :'(  Excellent news that the paper has posted something though, hopefully it will get people looking.  I've printed off a huge wadge of leaflets and am going to start doing some after dinner.  Fingers crossed she is still nearby and someone spots her.

Tan - as the paper has your number, do you want me to pm you my number in case you need someone local to follow something up?  Obviously you can pm me on here too but phone is a bit more immediate especially if someone thinks they have caught her!

Edit: just got back, I've done most of the roads around the edge of the golf course.  It's a quiet residential area with very little traffic and lots of cats so hopefully lots of cat lovers, so with a bit of luck she will head that way and be spotted.  I'm optimistic that it's the sort of neighbourhood where people will genuinely keep their eyes out and will get in contact if they see anything - without wanting to reinforce stereotypes it's also the sort of neighbourhood where I suspect a lot of residents are also members of the golf club so hopefully that will give us some extra eyes, ears and gossip mechanisms in there too.  Fingers crossed x

I'm the CP person. I've notified Herts & Essex Petsearch and Animal Rescue Charity at Foxdells Farm in Stortford and have made contact with someone who works at the Services who will put up posters that Tan sends. I'll also get copies to local vets (Kews, Mercer & Hughes, BS Vet Hospital & A120 vets)

Alison & Tan - could you keep me informed of developments. As Tan says, it may be us who has to take on any kittens. My email is in my profile or via http://harlow.cats.org.uk.

Nice to have another CP bod on board  :)  :welcome: Sue and thanks for all you're doing too  I think Lia has really struck a chord with me as a cat lover as it must be terrible for her owner to be so far away and so helpless  :(

I take it Lia is not spayed then  :shy: I wonder if she was an indoor cat in the UK, will make it even harder on her being out there alone if she's not used to even being outdoors  :(

Can ya tell us a bit more about Lia :)  We would love to hear about her and her sister.  ;D

Are they indoor cats? Were they born in UK or did ya bring them from Germany to live here?

What's Lia's personality like?

Thank you! yes, its hard to be in Germany and Lia is so far away somewhere..

Well, I came to the UK 2 years ago and I bought Lia and Lua there. I never had a cat before, but now I just love them so much. They are both very friendly and quite cats. Lua is more like a baby, Lia is stronger. They went outside every day for a few hours but they always came back before night. They were very close to each other. Very lovely :( Lia was always sitting on the top of me. only me, whereever i was lying :) She was very shy to strangers. Well, they are just lovely cats and I hope so so much that Lua can be with her sister again one day :(

Sue and I went up to the services yesterday evening for another look around - and again there is absolutely no sign of her  :'(

There is so much undergrowth it really is like looking for a needle in a haystack and of course we don't even know if she is still there after 3 weeks.  So we think the best hope is to keep as much awareness raised as possible in the hope that someone, somewhere, spots her.

We were talking while we were up there about how useful a pair of infra-red goggles would be in places like this - so much dense shrubbery that she could easily be about 6" from your feet and you'd never know.  I found a pair on ebay for £20 but alas the bids took it up to about £45 at the last minute.  Don't suppose anyone has a pair lying around that they'd like to lend us  :evillaugh:

Liz, I spoke to my CP Homing & Welfare officer about trapping and she was somewhat discouraging - she didn't really think it was practical without a sighting, and someone would have to go up there twice a day to check.

I think setting a trap is a good idea personally I have caught 2 boys this year we had never seen and we have infra red at our feeding stations to monitor our outside crew

I'm sure the services could help by checking the trap it would just mean that someone would have to go look it the trap was tripped

Am sure the services staff could be shown how to reset the trap as this could be good publicitiy for them helping find a lost cat - local paper their website etc

What do you get if you cross a "local cat lover", Cats Protection and a Barista?  A very happy ending  :evillaugh:  Will update properly after I've had some dinner and calmed down, but it culminated in a trap being set at about 11am today and by 3.30pm she was in it!  Currently settled down in my mother-in-law's spare room; she has had some food, used the litter tray, groomed, rolled around on her back, purred, cuddled up to us and generally been behaving not at all like a cat which has been stray for 3 months!

Yes I'm quite sure it's her - I have several other photos which Sabrina sent me.  Vet check tomorrow will confirm with the microchip anyway but what are the chances of picking up another longhaired tortoiseshell with the same markings at the same services!

Mark I can't believe how chilled she is either, I was expecting a terrified feral cat but she has behaved just like any other 'normal' cat...pottering about, using the litter tray, lying on her back with legs in the air, being very friendly and happy - I think she must just be very relieved to be in the warm again!

I text Sabrina earlier but I have not heard back from her yet, I also text her a couple of days ago and told her we were about to set a trap and she replied then so I know she is around.  I will give her a buzz on her home number tomorrow if I haven't managed to make contact before then.

Oh yes the story...well about 6 weeks or so ago we had a possible sighting over the golf course - it seemed plausible because the house was at the end of a ditch line which ran straight from the services.  Tried a trap over there and got nothing - re-leafleted and got a couple of calls which again came to nothing (one had seen a similar cat but she had a white front, another wanted to know if I wanted a kitten instead) and then a long period of nothing...until last week when someone rang to say they had seen her at the services the week before but couldn't catch her - they live local and saw the poster in the vets so rang me a week later.  (just goes to show how important it is to keep those posters up!) so we got back in contact with the services and it turns out that Lia had been seen there for about the past month...staff had been feeding her and hoping to just catch her, but as they hadn't been able to they got in contact a few days ago.  So Sue from the local Cats Protection who has been doing a brilliant job of helping me and sorting stuff out (because she has the cats protection logo on her email it seems to make more people listen than just me with my hotmail account!) got hold of a trap.  Mr Barista from Starbucks at the services got the necessary management permission for us to set the trap and made arrangements for it to be monitored; we set the trap this morning, and by 3.30pm - bingo!   :wow:

Little vid  :wow: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v117/AlisonA/?action=view&current=037-1.mp4

I am a happy cat who will sleep well tonight  :wow:

Seems she was pretty much an indoor cat too, so it's even more amazing. I guess she stayed around the Services all the time as there was food in the way of discarded takeways, and warmth. Perhaps the sightings a bit further away on the golf course were spurious, even so it was encouraging that people were reporting, but we'll never know if it was her. We were a bit worried that she might have picked up a poisoned rat as well as they put down poisoned bait around the services.  She is unspayed so all bits X'd she's not pregnant; hopefully where she was there's not too many unneutered males of the feline variety.

...and microchip confirms what we already knew, that this is definitely Lia  :wow:

I've left her at the vets for the day, they are going to give her a proper check over including checking for (hopefully no) signs of pregnancy.  The nurse did say that she didn't seem in too bad a condition considering how long she's been out.

I still haven't managed to get hold of Sabrina - I spoke to her dad this morning though - between my German and his English (which was far better than my German)  we established that Sabrina wasn't home and that I have Lia ("Katze Lia, ich habe ) but not much else.  Fingers crossed I get to talk to Sabrina very soon!

Hi Sabrina

I want to get this story in our local newspaper because Tan I think it was got an article in there initially. Everyone in Bishop's Stortford who was involved in the publicity that I've told so far that we did is s-o-o-o pleased. It will be a follow up to thank Alison and the guy at the services and to get a bit of publicity for Cats Protection that I'm involved with. Can I say that Lia will be going home to Germany to live with her owner? I'll post the photos of her rescue soon.

The man from Animal Search UK will email you to get her listing taken off.

Its not easy just to travel to London from here ( its about 14 hours by car ). Thats why I cant pick her right now. But its nice you write this article. Thank you! xxx

It sounds like a good solution that she goes back to Lincs for now, at least that way she can recover from her experience in familiar surroundings before travelling again, and it also makes it easier for you to work out when to make the longer journey.

Lia will be reunited with her dad and her former house tomorrow  :wow:  I'm so pleased, this time tomorrow she should be in a familiar house with someone that she knows  :wow:  I really hope that she settles down very well and I would love to keep in touch with Sabrina and hear how Lia continues  :Luv2:

Alison - That is wonderful - assume everything went ok at the vets today?

It would be great if you could keep in touch with Sabrina and let us know when Lia finally achieves the journey to Germany that she started a few months ago.

Honourable mention too I think to the local lady who spotted her in the car park and then recognised her from the poster in the vets (which I was thinking - how long do I leave it up there?) and got in touch....

Plus the Bishop's Stortford Golf Club manager who let me ride in the golf buggy to set the trap and ordered her greenkeepers to check it for a week (sadly without result).
:Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

It's like movie credits isn't it - so many people to thank, a definite team effort  :wow:

Lia set off back to Lincoln with her daddy at about 8.15pm so hopefully she should be home again within an hour or so  :wow:  Her daddy was definitely very pleased to see her and I'm sure she will be well cared for before she is able to be reuinted with her mum and sister in Germany  :wow:

Hello!
I just want to say thank you again.  I dont know how many people were involved in helping to find Lia. Unfortunately I cant say thank you to everyone in particular. So I just want to thank all of you! I thought the best way is to give a donation to cats protection. I really appreciate the effort to find a cat which isnt your own. Sorry about the english. I think you understand that I am just grateful! :) THANK YOU!!! Sabrina, Ruben and LIA   :Luv2:

What a lovely thing to do Sabrina  Yours and Lia's situation certainly captured our hearts, I must admit after a few weeks I thought there was no chance of you being reunited with her being lost so close to the motorway. Am very pleased to be wrong!

Bless you Sabrina that's a lovely gesture, I'm sure Cats Protection will be very grateful.  Thank you too for sorting me out so quickly with the vets bill cost - much appreciated.  Please do let us know how Lia is getting on, I hope she is settling back down well in her old house  :wow:

This is such a great story with a happy ending which is rare these days  :)

Maybe this is naughty of me to suggest, but if you are making a donation, it might be put to better use by donating directly to the branch involved  :shy:

I *think* Sabrina has been in touch with Sue for that very reason, Mark  :wow:

Time to use the 'comments' section on the website to give a full list of credits, I reckon  :evillaugh:

We are hugely grateful to Sabrina for her donation,  :thanks: and yes, Mark, it's going to the branch involved. As everyone says, it's just fantastic to have a happy ending.

Thanks for posting the link - it wasn't online yesterday when the paper came out but it's in the actual paper too!

Hope we can hear soon of Lia's progress. She seemed in remarkably good shape considering all she's been through.

So am I, Sue  :evillaugh:

On the online bit there is a 'write a comment' section, so I thought it might be a good place to ensure that everyone who has played a part gets a mention  :wow:  Will give it a go later/tomorrow if you can send me a list of the people you have liaised with  :wow:
