Title: Chico UPDATE - Settled in new home!
Post by: Gillian Harvey on June 20, 2010, 13:58:42 PM
You may remember me mentioning this boy who'd been wandering round the area for a while. I first saw him about a year ago, he seemed to disapear for a long time, and then suddenly turned up again recently. I saw that he had a wound on his neck, and then a few days later saw him again and it looked like the area around the wound had been shaved - so sort of assumed he may have been treated. However, today he came and sat outside the front door and I was able to see through the window that what I thought was a shaved area is probably just hair loss where he's scratched at the wound - and the wound looked worse than when I saw him before.

Anyway, he ran off when I opened the front door, but came back when I closed it again, when I went out the second time he came up to me and was very purry and friendly - so thought gotta take my chance to get him treated, so grabbed him (not much resistance!) and he's now up in my grooming room. He's not neutered which I 'd already worked out (used to hear him tom cat yowing when he was outside at night, and seen him spraying a lot). Luckily the Cats Action Trust who I foster for now have said they will pay for him to be blood tested for FIV and FelV and neutered. Only trouble is we are completely full up at the mo like everywhere, so he's gonna have to stay in my grooming rooom (luckily no customers for a week - but he can't stay there forever!)

He's a good looking chap - or he will be when cleaned up etc, obviously some pedigree in there somewhere - red colourpoint of some sort, maybe some siamese in there perhaps? The wound looks pretty nasty and his coat is filthy. He's got a sad face I think.

Glad to hear you're getting him sorted

aw what a poor soul.      He does look as though he has had a hard life.      He's going to get plenty of TLC I'm sure now though!

Poor baby  :'(

Looks like more than cat fight injuries. Art least he is in safe hands now . I wouldn't even bother advertising him, as if by any remote chance her has owners, he is better off away from them.

You could be right - I emailed the pic of the wound to our coordinator and she thought it looks like he could have been attacked by a dog or fox? There is another wound the other side, nowhere near as bad, but suppose could be where something had a grip on him. The areas around the wounds feel swollen, but he doesnt mind me touching them. He's so passive and purry, he rolls over when you go to stroke him  :Luv2:

I'll try and get him into the vets tomorrow if they've got any appointments. Think I'm going to be kept up all night with his wailing  although he only did it when I first put him in the room, he's been quiet since, but come the night when he'd usually be out and about........

An untreated abcess left for weeks would burst and rot like that, hes very lucky not to have maggots in it  :( the amount of scratches on his neck and face certainly leans to full on tom fights, hes no turn tail and run chap!
Funny how they always know when to seek help and where!

Yep, guess so, perhaps vet will have more idea tomorrow. Isnt it a shame he's had to live like that?,  fighting for everything.

I have a real love for tough tatty toms, their drive for survival always amazes me and they make such super pets once neutered  :Luv2: i still strive to catch omalley cat, must be 4 years since we met and 3 since he broke his leg, how he coped with that still to this day eludes me  :(
Does your rescue rehome fiv's? Im sure he would grab a few heart strings, especially with a before/after shot  :Luv:

I think they do rehome fiv's to indoor homes, not sure how that works though - for cats who have always lived a life on the streets  - he's definitely going to be very rehomeable looks wise!   :Luv:

What a gorgeous boy he is Gillian!  :Luv2: Thank goodness you managed to catch him!   Everything crossed the tests come back clear!

As Millys Mum says, how these 'tatty, torn toms' survive amazes me too! We had one at work about 18 months ago-he'd been around for a few weeks and then, one day turned up with a massive head wound, like he'd been scalped   I called the RSPCA who came straightaway but the Inspector couldn't catch him, so he left a trap. The cat promptly disappeared for 2 weeks and the Inspector came back for the trap. The day after, the cat appeared and all he had to show for the wound was a piece of flesh about the size of a 10p which hadn't healed He only hung around for a couple more days and i never saw him again  :(

Thanks everyone  :thanks: - he was as quiet as a mouse last night  :Luv: We've been to the vets this morning, vet thought possibly a rodent bite, but I guess we'll never know for sure. Anyway, she's cleaned it up and it looks a lot better for that. He's got antibiotics for a week. She reckons he's older than I'd thought - probably 8yrs plus, poor boy, which is more worrying for his FIV and FelV bloods, the longer he's been out there, I suppose the more likely it is he's going to be positive  :( . I'll know later on today. He wasnt chipped - no surprise there really.

He's a real softie and a bit of a scaredy cat, but was as good as gold getting into the carrier and at the vets. Fingers crossed he's clear, and can be neutered and homed.

:Luv: Gorgeous boy Gillian, well done you. I'm developing rather a soft spot for blue eyed cream boys...  ;)

You and me both LOL! I couldnt have another boy here I don't think - Harry would never forgive me!

Oh - meant to say, I'm calling him Chico, dunno why, it just came to me last night and seemed to fit ;)

Just spoken to our coordinator and I can go ahead and have him neutered and once he's all sorted, wounds healed and clean, he can be put up for rehoming as an indoor cat, or catproofed garden etc  :yayyy: :yayyy: - phew what a relief!

Only thing is I'm kind of stuck with him in my grooming room because my pens are full, as are all the other fosters pens and rehoming seems to be at a standstill.

I don't know - I've been reading through all the info about FIV tests and its started me thinking too about the chance it could be wrong - probably remote chance though, considering his lifestyle and battle scars.  Also, I'm not sure the trust will pay for another test, but worth an ask  ;)

He's got to finish his course of antibiotics before I can get him in to be neutered, was hoping to do it this week but it'll be next week now.

I meant to ask the vet but forgot - do you think I should keep bathing/cleaning his wound, and if so what with? or should it heal on its own - think he's going to keep scratching at it
Title: Re: Caught this 'stray' today
Post by: Skully on June 21, 2010, 19:29:57 PM
I've always been advised not to bathe the wound once they are on antibiotics unless they are oozing and then only wash it with salt water made from boiled water and sea salt. It would be wise to limit his ability to scratch it, but due to were it is that could be hard. Maybe one of the inflatable doughnut ones would work, but it might just make the wound warm and sweaty which is also bad. A hard one to call.

I just checked and Glasgow charge £32 - although I guess vets charge extra for posting etc. I'm sure we could have a little whip round.

Post by: Gillian Harvey on June 21, 2010, 22:36:54 PM
:thanks: - that doesnt sound too bad though, it means they'll have to take blood again I presume, don't suppose what was drawn today will be able to be used? Maybe they could do it when I take him for neutering - will ask tomorrow.

OK, I'll leave the wound and hope he doesnt scratch too much - think your right about the donut one, and the other type collar wouldnt stop him either. I'm trying distraction at the mo - made him a catnip knotty (out of a face flannel) and he rolled about like a loon  :evillaugh:

Not sure about that. I know they say urine has to be fresh but might be different with blood. My friend Grant used to be a motor bike courier for a pathologists in Harley Street. His mum used to complain as he sometimes kept samples in her fridge overnight  - I remember him saying there was a bit of Margot Fontayne kept in it once   :evillaugh:
Title: Re: Caught this 'stray' today
Post by: Desley (booktigger) on June 22, 2010, 08:14:40 AM
IT depends how much blood they take, some vets take enough that if an inhouse test shows positive, they can send a further sample to Glasgow (which is current best practice as inhouse tests do have a 7% chance of showing a false positive, although he does look to be high risk). Vets do charge for processing etc, but I dont think it adds that much onto the price, maybe another £7 (depending on vets of course).

Fingers crossed for him.

This beautiful chap is on my mind Gillian and I can't wait for the "after" pics when he is all healed up.  I don't suppose there's any chance he is using litter tray already?

I couldnt have another boy here I don't think -

Do I detect some uncertainty?   ;)
Title: Re: Caught this 'stray' today
Post by: Gillian Harvey on June 22, 2010, 13:32:07 PM
Oh yes, he is certainly using the tray - the wee smell permeates the whole house!  - Chico and I are going to fall out before too long - so much for the quiet little mouse he was the first night - last night he yowled for a lot of the night and its pretty blood curdling at such close quarters (my bedroom is right next to his room)  :tired: He's unsettled and wants out - I can see him thinking, I've had a feed, I've had a rest, thanks, but I'd like to go now.....I don't know who is going to crack first, but I think its going to be me..... :innocent:

He's got a week of antibiotics before he can be neutered, (can't see what difference being on antibiotics make myself) a week of this (he's yowing at the moment again..) help!!!

The coordinator suggested swapping one of the fosters out in the pen (it would have to be Minnie rather than the 3 I think) and putting Chico out there - but thats just going to drive my neighbours crazy too!

Do I detect some uncertainty?   ;)

Nooooo! (especially not after last night LOL!)  :Nooooo:

Blimey! - in  a good way I hope!  :scared:

Wish he could go in one of the pens in the garden, but a) they're full , and b) neighbours would go ape with the noise!

Bit worried about him actually - he's stressed from being confined and have caught him doing several, frequent, small wees  :scared: Asked vets again today if he could be neutered sooner rather than later, but they are insisting he finishes his course of antibiotics first - so Monday is the earliest  Bit annoyed really as was told on the phone I do realise that an operation will put him under stress and could make his 'Feline Aids' worse  >:( He hasnt got feline aids, he's FIV positive, thats all - and the flippin stress from being confined and un-neutered is probably worse!

Bloomin vets grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Do you have a carpet in the room he is in? Just wonderfing cos when the birmans were in solitary here, the howling was terrible and Franta dug the carpet up under the door and I couldnt get in!

A piece of hardboard slipped across under the door stopped him doing it but then he started scratching........sigh

I had a devil of a job getting in and out of the door cos it would be rushed by both birmans as I opened it and getting out was even worse.

A lot of vets call it feline aids, as to our CP branch who are relatively well informed  :-:

I think they use it as everyone will know what it means, whereas many probably haven't heard of FIV?

Hope the yowling stops Gillian  and that the frequent weeing is nothing.

Blimey! - in  a good way I hope!  :scared:

In a very good way Gillian

I do empathise on the weeing front front Gillian.  I thought perhaps that may happen which is why I asked if he was using trays.  I am in similar situation atm with Freddie (and he isn't grounded) although at least Freddie's doesn't have the Tomcat aroma (it did when he first arrived and it can be very potent I remember).  You will know as much as anyone what little can be done until his op; feliway, zylkene, earplugs, cleaning up regime etc.  If he's in your grooming room, I assume that's affecting your grooming activities?  So sorry he's causing so much upset and hope he's booked in as early as poss next week for his op.

You are a star for taking him in and I'm sure he'll reward you when he's fully recovered.

Poor Chico and you, Gillian. It must be quite stressful for a tom that's used to looking out for himself to suddenly find restrictions in place. And it's frustrating for you, because you're helping him and can't tell him that.

Hope he figures it out soon. He really is a handsome boy.
Title: Re: Caught this 'stray' today

Des, unfortunately the pens are close to the house and noise carries a lot where I am. The neighbours have already said they can hear the cats scratching at the litter during the night, so yowing would not go down well LOL!

Its so true JS - that he doesnt understand his confinement and I can't tell him its for his own good - ultimately! I'm trying to keep him entertained, but he's a bit scared of toys - weird! the only thing he doesnt mind is the catnip knotty I made for him. I'm feeding him 4 times a day just to give him something to focus on  .

The frequent weeing isnt so frequent today, think he was driving himself into a frenzy yesterday. Rosella, I havent got grooming customers till next week, thankfully, and yes, he's booked in for 8.30 am Monday morning -it seems like such a long way away.....plus, I know things don't settle down right away after neutering - any idea how long it takes for the hormones to settle? - plus, will he stop yowing as well ? or is that a habit thing that he might continue despite settled hormones?

Gill, no, I'm pleased to say I've got vinyl in the grooming room, so no carpets to dig at! I am having trouble getting in and out of the room though, he wants to dash out, and my lot want to dash in

Here is today, squinting his eyes at me as if to say I hate you for keeping me in here! and then relenting and letting me brush under his chin.  :Luv:

Awww poor little man!  :Luv2: My Charlie (semi feral from work) is scared of toys (and of everything else!) When he first came to me, he'd been free for 6.1/2 years, so i expected a nightmare being confined for 5 weeks, but he was great, no yowling at all and only whimpering for the last week. Maybe it was cos he knew me anyway, or that he was neutered as a kitten? He doesn't want to be inside at all the last few weeks-maybe it's the same for Chico? He likes his freedom when the weather's good! Anyway, hopefully he'll start to settle and realise he's got a much better life now!

I believe it can take up to 6 weeks for the hormones to settle..................

So frustrating. I know with Mog I regularly exclaim "What is it you WANT?" Because I make sure there's food down, check the litter trays, ensure "her" beds aren't being taken up by the youngsters, groom her, fuss her and she still yowls. Granted, hers is dementia - but the reason with that is usually confusion. Chico will be seriously confused....

He truly is lovely looking. I think from what you've said it needs to be someone prepared to have a secure garden for him, because he's so used to outdoor access he might just stay acting stir crazy.

I love the brushing picture. :) Hope he calms down soon.

Freddie had his op about a week before I got to bring him home from RSPCA.  I don't recall yowling as such but he squeaked a lot and still does.  I think his hormones settled (i.e. his tomcat smell went)  after about 10 days so that would be 2 to 3 weeks after op with Fred.  Maybe we were lucky?

Latest pics show Chico already looking sooooo much better Gillian and just love the way he obviously loves being groomed under chin.  I was showing him to my colleague at lunchtime today.  He's just lovely  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

Yes, I think your right about wanting to be out in the good weather - I feel so mean  :(

He's definitely gonna need a secure garden or huge run, I can't see him being an indoor cat either somehow.

Just going to go and give him his nighttime meal - keep him quiet for 5 minutes at least :tired:

That's what i've read on CatChat!  No experience of it tho.

You can't do anything BUT keep him in Gillian until he's neutered, so don't feel bad about it

Fingers crossed someone with a secure garden offers him a home soon, or even a home with a garden in a quiet area!  He's SO gorgeous!  :Luv2:

I've found the following from surfing t'internet Gillian

"According to our vet, it takes about three weeks for the male sex hormones to leave the body of an adult cat after he is neutered"

"high levels of hormones still circulate in the cat's body for a few weeks after neutering, so you may not see the full benefit of neutering for a couple weeks"

"The vet said that it can take up to two weeks for the hormones to get out of his system"

I suspect the truth is that each cat is different and boy cat behaviour will lessen day by day following his op.  Thing is, a lot of Chico's habits will be learned behaviour as he is an adult so will not be fully linked to hormones

That's a shame Gillian. I have always read that it takes up to 6 weeks, but the smell and yucky fur has always died down within 2 weeks. Sophisticat antibacterial litter is fantastic for masking unneutered tom cat smell, sorry I have only just remembered that!!! I have been lucky with all my unneutered toms and they have always used the tray with no problem. Maybe mix some soil with his litter in case he isn't fully used to the litter tray? I would ask the vet to test a urine sample when he is there, just in case the stress has brought on cystitis. Quite a lot of strays dont know how to play.

Popping on to give you some moral support. (from one person who has a yowly cat to another.... ;)) Hope Chico calms down soon. It's frustrating, not to mention stressful but you ARE doing what's best for him. Really hope his perfect home is just around the corner, you sound a little overcrowded!

Thanks for looking that up Rosella -  I'm clinging to what you said about the hormones lessening each day after the op and hoping he forgets his 'learned' behaviour LOL!

Sophisticat antibacterial litter is fantastic for masking unneutered tom cat smell, sorry I have only just remembered that!!! I have been lucky with all my unneutered toms and they have always used the tray with no problem.

He's fine using the tray Des - I was more worried about his 'over use' of the tray, but that seems to be settling thankfully. I'll have a look at the sophisticat antibac litter, thanks.

You can't do anything BUT keep him in Gillian until he's neutered, so don't feel bad about it

I know I'm having to be cruel to be kind - but its so hard. The more I think about it the more cross I get about the vet (well not the vet actually - vet nurse) saying he must finish the 7 day course of antibiotics before being neutered - because whats the betting they put him on antibiotics after the op anyway?

Popping on to give you some moral support. (from one person who has a yowly cat to another.... ;))

....... and I'm just popping on to wish you a soothing good night's sleep Gillian

Thanks guys!  :thanks: - he's been a bit quieter today, I've had what little was left in a a feliway diffuser going in his room since this morning. I'm sure its made him a bit more chilled - but then he is usually 'fairly' quiet during the day, its just the night.....saying that, I hear someone calling.... :tired:

Just wanted to pop in with some moral support... with the vet/antibiotics thing I would be really worried about him ending up with septicaemia from that big wound, and some healing time plus antibiotics will bring that risk waaay down. Sory, I know it's still grim having a yowler but at least it helps a bit knowing why you have the wait.

Does he have a radio in his room? After 8yrs as a Cat of No Fixed Abode he's probably finding the quiet and solitude really weird.

A small pen in the garden ?????????

I'm working on that!  :shify: Its just, my old shed at the top of my garden is quite a good size, it just needs a new felt roof (theres no felt at all at the mo) and I've got some timber and mesh cat run panels from my old cat run which I thought could be attached to the front to make a run for him too. I could paint it all inside to make it easier to keep clean - I've got all the materials just need someone to do the work. Trouble is, its down to the committee to decide if they can pay for the work (considering what they've just paid out on my pens which are going to need electricity for heating come the winter  :-: ) But he cannot stay where he is - I need my room back and he needs not to be cooped up indoors!

Have just caught up with this Gillian. Poor Chico, he obviously knew where to go for help  He is drop dead gorgeous - those eyes  :Luv2:

Thanks  :thanks: bet he didnt bargain for all this when he came to me for help LOL!  :evillaugh:

Keep returning for a top up of the yum factor :drool; He isnt deaf is he?

Don't think so - but I sort of wish I was at the moment  :innocent:

Well, he's been neutered today - so we're counting down to being hormone free..... :evillaugh: The past couple of nights I've been closing my lot downstairs so that Chico can have the run of the upstairs, thinking it would give him a bit more freedom....didnt make him any quieter though, just, instead of the noise being concentrated in one area, it was everywhere, up the stairs, down the stairs, up on windowsill, down from windowsill, on the bed, off the bed, up on wardrobe, thump! down from wardrobe.......until around 4 ish in the morning  :tired: Get this though - where do I find him when I get up in the morning? - yes, in the very room he'd been shut in for the past week, I ask you!.......

Its not really possible with him being FIV pos  :( not to mention how pee'd off mine would be (remember this is the boy that madam Gwynnie had pinned in the corner or the hallway that time when he made the mistake of coming in the catflap!)

Do you know, there has been a change in him almost overnight! - last night, he did whine a bit (he had the run of upstairs again, while mine were shut downstairs), but then most of the night he was actually cuddled up on the bed - like he'd always lived here!  Now I'm going to feel really horrible about moving him to the shed conversion - if it ever gets done

Aw, wish you could have him  :) It would be lovely if he could to someone I know (and I could visit  ;) ) . When I first saw him over a year ago, I also thought BSH colourpoint - but then thought his face is not round enough and more pointy which made me think some Siamese - but that didnt seem quite right either. Could well be some BSH in there somewhere.

Chico's wound has healed nicely and all those scratches down his neck and across his face have gone. Its nearly a week since he was neutered and he's much more settled now - plus, he has the run of the upstairs at night (close mine downstairs - much to their disgust!) so he sleeps on the bed  :Luv: Anyway, here's how the wound is looking now

Really not sure about that one MM - he's had no contact with mine at all since he's been here, only just a peep round the door as I've gone in and out - with no reaction to seeing one of mine sitting the other side of the door. That time he came in through the catflap and my Gwynnie had him pinned in the corner - he wasnt putting up much of a fight!

He is just gorgeous  :Luv2: :Luv2:  He sleeps on YOUR bed??   ;)

Ye, but he can't stay  ;)

Just comparing the look of his coat from 2 weeks ago to now - amazing what a few weeks of not living rough (and a little bit of brushing  ;) ) makes!

Thanks all  :thanks: mostly down to being off the streets and 4 (yes 4!) square meals a day LOL!

He's still a bit of a pain at  night time with the yowing - although its not as bad as it was and invariably when I wake up in the morning he's zonked out on the bed! He's still got the run of the upstairs at night time so that also means I have to have the windows shut - in this heat  because I'm not sure he wouldnt try getting out! Tom cat smell is still there

But, luckily, today the cat run for his new abode went up, was hoping it would all be finished today, but the chap is coming back tomorrow to put the new felt roof on the shed and alter the door, so it opens inwards instead of out, plus put the vinyl down on the floor (and hopefully fit a catflap into the door - cept, he doesnt know it yet, I'm hoping to slip that one in - oh while your here, could you just...... :evillaugh: ) . It still won't be quite ready though, cos I started painted the inside and ran out of paint, so need to get some more of that and do another coat anyway. So all being well - I reckon it should be ready by Friday and I can move him in. I think its a pretty good space for him, the shed is 8' x 6' and the run is 8' x 4' . I hope he's going to like it and hasnt got too used to sleeping on my bed  :scared:

Title: Re: Caught this 'stray' - PICS OF CHICO'S BACHELOR PAD!
Post by: Gillian Harvey on July 30, 2010, 17:31:38 PM
Chico has been in his new pad for a couple of weeks now. The first week I took him up there each day, but brought him back in at night time (just to get him used to it - before I left him there all on his own  :( ) . Bless him, when I opened the cat carrier to take him up the garden - he would hop straight in and sit waiting to be carried to his new abode - then at nighttime, he'd do exactly the same, as soon as I opened the carrier, he'd hop back in - every time without fail, what a clever boy  :Luv2:

Anyway, the day came when I thought he was ready to be left overnight in his new pad - felt awful actually leaving him, he was looking at me as if to say aren't I coming with you this time? He was aboslutely fine, didnt hear a peep out of him (mind you its nearly 100ft long my garden and he's right up the top - so may not have heard him even if he did meow!) He's been fine up there ever since and he seems very settled.

He's got several sleeping areas, this one on top of an old storage unit (which contains his tins of cat food, treats, and cleaning stuff for me - wipes, k roll, nappy sacs etc, etc)

and then the igloo on top of the food prep table  :innocent: , plus his chair (which is the same on he had when he was indoors - something familiar for him)

Its my garden shed I already had - (you should see the pile of junk that came out of it LOL!). I painted it inside (two coats  :tired: ) and out. Then I got someone to put new roofing felt on as it didnt have any on at all  :innocent: and I also had the timber and mesh panels (from when I used to have a cat run), and it just so happened that the front panel with the gate already in it was exactly the width of the shed so that was a good starting point. The guy who came to do it adapted some of my other panels to make the sides and roof of the run. I had some vinyl left over too - unfortunately not enough to make one whole piece for the floor - so its a bit of a patchwork but does the job for now. I've also fixed a solar powered light on the outside because I've got no electric up there and no other lighting up the top of the garden - plus inside I'm using one of those LED camping lights which gives a really good light.

I keep his food up there and the opened tin gets put in a little cool bag with ice packs to save me having to remember to bring the tin back up (which I did the first few times - had to go all the way back down to get his food LOL!).

Shirley, although its a long garden, I don't actually have much grass - I'm not keen on lawn cutting, so only the middle section has some lawn - and even then I have large flower beds either side and a huge oval flower bed in the middle! There is no grass at all in the bit nearest the house, nor the bit where Chico is.

He's doing fine thanks for asking  :thanks: Still no offers of a home for him, I'm looking into options for him though  ;) He still comes indoors to his room at night (in case he wakes the neighbours  :tired: ) and he still jumps straight into his carrier ready to come down the garden, but he has to make sure I put all his toys in the carrier, so he pats every one as I put them in lol! I'm sure he's counting them  :evillaugh: Then we have to do the same thing in the morning, pack his little bag and go up the garden again!

Anyway, pics taken this very evening, he's put on a lot of weight - bit too much I think  :-[

Gosh! I can hardly believe the change in him comparing those pics either!

I havent looked into the top cat thing on CC yet Helen, must do that. I want to find the perfect home for him, but its a lot for someone to take on really, not just the FIV and that I want him to have some outside space, but he does still spray - I don't mind coz its in easily cleaned places here, but in someone's home, are they going to be quite so amenable about it?  :(

Thanks   :thanks: - I'm worried we'll never find a home for him, and yet I'm also worried that if we do find a home that it'll be the right one because I can't bear to think of him out on the street again, when I look at his trusting little face I want to cry sometimes :(

I did have a thought the other day - probably completely out of the question, but, I wondered about company for him - not another male, but possibly an FIV+ female? he could share his pad with? I thought, if that was possible, I could cat proof the whole of that top area of the garden (its not a huge area, but would give him, and possibly another, more space, including his current pad and run). Its still not a proper home though is it? and prob a silly idea, its just his future goes round in my head a lot of the time.

I love him so much and wonder if mixing with other cats would actually be a problem, even though he is FIV.

I thought this could be only passed by a bite but not just being with other cats?

Isnt FIV the same as the precursor to aids in a human?

We have had to learn that we cant issolate humans from other humans, so why cats as long as they are not allowed to mix with many outdoor cats and fight.

Sorry if I have got all this wrong.

True, with the right mix of cats, where there would be no fighting, it would be fine. I know he could not mix with mine, there is true animosity there, and Joe, Harry especially could not be trusted to start something!

I have had some male/male combinations that have worked really well, although have had other males that do like to bully other males. I wouldnt give up finding him a home though Gillian, and a home environment is the best thing for him, rather than converting a pen, plus it would restrict how many other cats you could help.
Title: Re: Caught this 'stray' - PICS OF CHICO'S BACHELOR PAD!
Post by: Susan + 8 on November 15, 2010, 11:35:27 AM
Aww, he's really beautiful. I have FIV+ Figaro living with 6 other FIV- cats, with no problems, so don't completely rule out homing him with other FIV- cats if the right home does comes along. As long as the introductions are done carefully and slowly (it took 2 months before I was confident enough to leave Figaro out with the others all day long whilst I was at work) then there really shouldn't be problems. I've since had a couple of my FIV- cats tested for FIV (they needed to go to the vet anyway and I decided to get them tested out of curiosity), and the results have come back negative, so mixed households really are fine.

Take a look at this FIV channel on youtube that Spencer from CatChat has put together (my lovely Figaro stars in one of the videos  ;D) http://www.youtube.com/user/LivingWithFIV Maybe Chico could be added to the channel too?

I don't know for sure, it was just I thought perhaps there would be less likely to be conflict between male/female - but of course, I know thats not always the case!

Hi Susan, yes am planning to give Spencer a vid of Chico, or at least some before and after photos.  :) - are your other cats males or females - or a mix?

Des, its not so much the FIV, I'm probably more worried about the spraying, most people arent going to put up with that I don't think.

:(
He's lovely. Another one we would love to consider but I can't trust Kylie  :(

No, thats the same with me, I'd love to have him, but it would cause absolute mayhem, I know from previous experience with the males that have been introduced to the household, Jasper for instance - him and Harry, well!  :scared:

I have a mix of boys and girls, Gillian. Funnily enough Figgsy is very much "one of the boys" and gets on much better with my male cats than my females. The three boys (including Figaro) spend every afternoon sleeping on my bed together, but I've never ever seen him cuddle up with any of the girls. Cats eh? Completely unpredictable! LOL

He's fine Edd, thanks for asking  :thanks: No offers of a home yet though and I've been thinking, again! about his future. Am now wondering if I might be completely mad and consider trying to integrate him with mine  :scared: . If anyone's got any input would love to hear what you think.

I've done intros many, many times before, but not with an FIV cat obviously and I do have dominant cat Harry, plus Joe has made it clear he doesnt like Chico when he's out in his run....I mean I've already been doing the exchange of scents thing - not intentionally, but just the fact that Chico is in the house all evening/night, so both him and mine are used to each other's scents, and thats been several months now.

I don't booster every year, but if I do, its for cat flu and enteritis only. I'd have to get Chico vaccinated for those before I did any intros. He could be more susceptible to any bugs, being FIV+ I guess.

Chico is so stunning and as long as you can ensure no fights, cant see any reason not too  ;D ;D

Can I ensure no fights though? I would take it slowly of course, and it would be a long time before Chico could mix with the others when I'm not around to supervise.

The vet thought possibly a rodent bite, but we'll never know I guess. He was in a sorry state, he must have been, to just let me pick him up and take him indoors, he'd always been very wary before.

Oh good, we're special  :Luv2:

Think I may look into getting him allergy tested again as he's beginning to get better with some of his other allergies. Our doctor wouldn't test him for animal allergies as he thought it was obvious due to family history and was more concerned with others like House Dust Mite, grass pollen, egg and milk.. all category 3-4 allergies (1 being weak, 6 being strong) So I've found finger prick tests online... Desperate maybe!?  :evillaugh:

What a stupid doctor, no allergy is obvious! Thats why its so hard to pin down often, exactly what the problem is.

Yep completely agree, this is the same doctor who told me twice that allergy tests don't work on small children and it would be a waste of  time... Even after two hospital trips for allergic reactions!  >:(

Took my OH who is is slightly more persuasive than me and finally got a referral to see a after months.

But fingers crossed they're getting better with his age  :evillaugh:

Might start my own thread with some allergy questions and leave the gorgeous Chico's thread to himself after I've now hijacked slightly!  :innocent:

He's doing fine thanks Sue  :thanks: When Coco goes to her new home next week, I will move Chico into my workroom (where she currently is, and where computer is - hence, lots of time spent in this room lol!), so he will have more company and the room is bigger and more comfortable - like a lounge really, as there is a settee in here as well  :) . I meant to post that on the rescue website thread so glad you know what I'm on about!

You can do it in paint, just crop then 'cut' (as in cut and paste) the headshot of his 'eye' picture and then paste it into the new pic. If you're not sure feel free to email me the pics and I can do it for you, I tried nabbing it from photobucket to do it for you but it displayed as a single thin line rather than a pic

He's actually been cat of the week for the past few months lol!  :innocent:

I was looking back at the early pictures of him when he first arrived, what a sad looking boy he was then.

How are the introductions going with your other furries?  :)

Hmmm.... :innocent: - I have put off trying intros for now. Firstly I'd been waiting till Coco was rehomed, so I could move Chico into the room she was in (its where my computer is, and bigger than the other room, and I spend a lot of time in it) so he has more of my company in the evening when he comes in from his outdoor pen. He's now been in that room a few weeks (its the room I would normally use as the 'safe' room for any newcomers, so it was going to be the start of intros)

However, I am quite concerned about Joe's reaction (aggressive) to Chico when he's in his run outside which makes me think there could be huge difficulties there. Plus I'm also very concerned about Chico's reaction to Harry - he acts like he just wants to get at him every time he sees him. I'm starting to feel like this could never work. Chico's situation at the moment isnt ideal, but he does have outside space and seems to enjoy being out in his run, and he is also much happier being able to come into my computer room in the evening with my company (if I'm not on the computer, I just sit on the settee up here and read a book - he usually comes and sits on my lap). So he's practically moved in, but not, if you see what I mean?!!

I've just started getting him used to wearing a harness, so eventually I hope I can get him out into the garden (when the others are indoors) to have more stimulation through exploring etc.  :)

So sad about Joe and Harry not seeming to get on with him, maybe they will be more accepting when he has been indoors and in garden longer...........sound they are worried that the hareem maybe slipping from their control  :shify: :shify:

Yes he's FIV+, but I want him to have some sort of outside space - secure garden or at the very least a cat run. If he was passive with other cats I'd have him here like a shot - but he's not - although absolutely soppy with people  :Luv2: I wouldnt be happy rehoming out of the area, as he's very special, having been here such a long time and being FIV+, I'd want to keep in touch and be on hand for any problems or if it didnt work out I'd need to be close by if I needed to bring him back.

After over 2 years with me, Chico went to his new home yesterday  He's gone on a trial basis, as he will be living with another FIV cat (male  :scared: ) similar age, and don't know if it will work. However, I know his new owner is going to do the best she can to make it work - she's got a large crate set up in the living room for Chico initially, and she's going to take things slowly. Inititial reaction of her cat to Chico was hissing and growling - to be expected, its his territory. Chico didnt react - he was obviously bemused and a bit stressed as the drive to her flat was just over an hour. She's going to ring me in a couple of days (not sure I can wait that long!) to let me know how things are going - luckily she's got a week off work to be with them.

I'll be happy if it works out, although I have to admit to having a little wobble yesterday evening and today, wondering if I've done the right thing for him  :( It was so hard to say goodbye to him  :'(

Chico's coming back  :( he's too dominant with the other cat, hounding the poor thing when he's trying to use the litter tray, or when he's eating .  The lady had Chico in a crate to start with, lots of feliway on the go, exchanging scents, supervised meetings etc, but no go. Well, I guess its proved something (that I probably already knew), that he needs to be Top Cat  ;) and the only cat.

Oh Gillian; forgive me but really he hasn't been there very long :(

Any chance at all of persuading the lady to give him another week?

We had such a bad time of it with Freddie & Billy Whiz to start with including the crate business but they became the very best of buddies before too long esp after Fred was allowed outside or is Chico going to be indoor only due to FIV status?

Just seems very soon
Title: Re: Chico UPDATE - gone to new home! Coming Back
Post by: Gillian Harvey on January 07, 2013, 23:06:21 PM
No, Chico wouldnt have been able to go outside there anyway - its a flat and no outside space. I didnt have high expectations myself of this working - Chico is a dominant cat - it was just if there was a chance it might work then I had to try for him. It has escalated today, with fur flying apparently  :(  Initial reports werent brilliant anyway and the update tonight has confirmed it really.
