Title: MIKEYS RESCUE & WHEELCHAIR FUND
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on April 14, 2010, 06:19:55 AM
MIKEYS STORY

Mikey was brought into a very small RSPCA branch in Stourbridge at the beginning of March. He was found after someone with an air rifle shot him and a pellet was lodged in his spine causing his back legs and tail to be paralised and he is incontinent. The vet that saw him said he should be PTS but one of the branch's helpers a lady called Heather, thought he deserved a chance and with their very small funds arranged to get him treated.

Heather took him home because he needed 24/7 care and has paid out of her own pocket for therapy to try to get his legs walking again plus equipment/supplies to help with his incontinence and
to help him get around.

He saw a specialist last week who said Mikeys spinal cord was too damaged for him to regain the back legs, tail and body functions but he has just changed to a raw diet which he loves and this has improved his situation and care.

Although he gets around amazingly in his harness he is not independent so Heather has decided to get some purposemade wheels for him and this is what Mikeys Wheelchair Fund is for.

I will put here Mikeys new video links showing him at play and also a link to Mikeys other thread on Purrs, where Heather has told his story.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uuvhnWfWXM

http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,31758.0.html

As you will have see he is a gorgeous cat and desperate to be able to get around. He loves going for walks in his special harness and playing and just being a cat but cant use his legs, and the wheels will help him get around better in the garden under his own steam although still with supervision.

All I can do is beg all cat lovers to please give Mikey a chance to be more active and donate to this appeal, every pound counts. All the money raised will go to pay the bill. No amount is too small.

To donate,

There is a Donate button at the bottom of every Purrs page   and you are asked to put in the message box FOR MIKEY. I am sorry we cannot acknowledge every donation but you will get an electronic acknowledement from Paypal. If you wish to send a cheque, please pm me through the Purrs site.

Purrs  and Cat Chat will be given the final total raised and an update on Mikeys progress.  ;D

:omg:Gill....thank you so much for doing this for Mikey.....He truely appreciates all the support and well wishes he has received from Cat chat and Purrs people and sends his pussycat loving to one and all  :Luv:

People will no doubt want to know how much the cart is.....I am looking at a couple of options at the moment, one is cheaper than the other, but I do like the idea of a cart that also gives him the ability to lay down in it...as I think in the long term that would be more useful for him. That one I beleive (and I've yet to get the confirmed quote) is £255...and would be from a UK company callled Dogmobility.....in fact....I found that site from JackSpratt posting on the other thread you started for Mikey....so  :thanks: for that!!

I am going to donate now to get his wheelchair fund off to a flying start! This is all very exciting.....and I will tell him all about it when I go and sit with him later. He's just had his tea and is having a nice wash and brush up in his bed at the moment!lol

The great thing about this is if I can get him used to using his own set of wheels and he's not dragging himself along, I may also be able to get him used to being in a diaper while he's in the cart...that way if he finds a permenant home it would mean he would be able to be in the house and get about quite easily without making a mess. I am looking at all of these things to make Mikey more homeable so he can have a really good long term future.

Thanking everybody in advance for their support and generosity  :crossed:

Anything that can be done to make him more comfortable, more able to get around and more rehomeable will all be great for Mikey

Sorry, no spare funds at the moment. :( Heather, did you let the company know Mikey is a rescue cat? They offered to reduce cost a little for Lilly Pumpkins chair if we decided it was best for her. (On an experienced rescuers advice we decided against it as she does have sensation in her back feet so we felt it would discourage any possible improvements.)

Thank you so much everybody and I know there are others who wish to donate  ;D

What I was thinking about is where any excess money could go, for Mikeys Puppy pads is an obvious one and maybe any other special things he needs that Heather will know about.

I was also thinking that if any money was left over at the end then maybe it could go to the very small RSPCA branch that Heather helps out and paid out for Mikeys care in the begiining from their very small funds as am sure that as they were willing to give Mikey such a chance then they will give other special cats a chance too.

Am interested to hear what peeps think and if they would be happy for this course of action,

When you click on the link to paypal, you enter the amount and click "update amount", then log in and on the left, it says "add note" - when you click on that, it give you a box to type in.

Hope that makes sense  :evillaugh:

I didn't realise how expensive puppy pads were. I wondered if Terry nappies might be any good? - Tesco value (and I'm sure others) have hand towels that are much smaller than regular towels and only about 60p each. I suppose it depends on how people feel about them going in a washing machine. Just wondered if something like that would be practical - I know it would be a lot cheaper than £70 a month in puppy pads - also eco friendly and less rubbish to get rid of.

Suspect that puppy pads are the only option that will keep Mikey and his surrrounds dry and also Heather is 150% busy with all jobs she does so more time is not available LOL.

Think that they soak up liquids and keep away from body so it makes him more comfortable and limits flies and stuff.......no nappy rash  ;)

Post by: heath380 on April 24, 2010, 23:55:32 PM
My goodness I am COMPLETELY blown away by you all!!! :wooooo: :wooooo: :wooooo:

This is more exciting than watching 'Children in Need' when they keep doing the drum roll to see what the total is! LOL

Just to let you all know that I went and sat with Mikey tonight and told him that whilst we were sitting in the pen having a fuss that all over the UK people were pledging money to help him and he was a very lucky little boy. He just looked up at me and smiled. He does that you know....he puts his little head back and smiles at me!! I told him he was luckier than he will ever know and that before he knows it he will have a nice new set of shiny wheels to polish every night so to get used to having the evenings to himself for the next week or so because he's going to have a polishing cloth in his little paws soon and I will be doing an inspection every morning!lol. If people are digging deep into their pockets for him he's got to be prepared to look after them!lol

Zoe - gosh thats an incredibly generous offer but one that I could never accept ( and please don't think I'm being ungrateful I would just feel awful taking your money every month!) I was going to try and get the money together for Mikey's cart myself so now that isn't necessary it will make his day to day care a little easier anyway. Just the fact that you are prepared to do it blows me away - it really does!

Mark  - I never realised how expensive puppy pads were either!lol And I buy them from the wholesalers which is cheaper than a normal shop. They cost me £14 + vat for a box of 100....and I've been going through 100 a week to keep him clean. They really are the only things that work though. Where they are flat and thin I line the pen floor with them and I can secure them under the scratching posts etc to so they don't get dragged about when he moves. Terry nappies unfortunately would just runkle (have I just made that word up??lol)up as he moves around the pen...they would also stay wet and that would mean so would he unfortunately...and if they don't stay lining the floor and he wee's again he just drags himself through it. The Puppy pads are great because the wee soaks into them but the top layer stays pretty dry and hence so does he. I also use them under all the vetbed he has in his pen and in his bed. Thats also been great at keeping him clean and dry as the wet just soaks through, and then he had a puppy pad underneath (which is how I've been able to give him a proper bed to sleep in)...but I have to change all the vet bed on virtually a daily basis too so the washing machine is constantly on. You're right though...caring for a disabled cat isn't at all eco friendly!
That said I have used less puppy pads this week since we have improved things in the 'bowel' dept with the switch to raw food....and if the cart works and I can put a diaper on him some of the time, then that should reduce the useage even more....although diapers are even more expensive. I'll probably learn to fold a puppy pad like a terry nappy!lol I have got a lovely diaper and some disposable pads for him already actually as when I first had him I thought they would be the answer to all my prayers to keep him and the pen clean....but unfortunately because he drags himself along the diaper just got dragged straight off in the process.....so that wonderful idea lasted about 5 mins! Its been a complete learning curve caring for Mikey I can assure you!lol

Anyway...I'm bushed with all the excitement and off to bed now...

Thank you all again for everything

What a beautiful boy, and such a heartwarming story.  Heather, thank you for doing all you can for this lovely lad.

We were fortunate in that when we had Flynn, my own littley smiley boy, he was shot by an air rifle but as he was a plumptious little feller it lodged in flesh only and did no damage to his organs or nervous system.   Paddy has emptied his piggy bank and just made a donation.  The best of everything and lots of love being sent to Mikey.   :Luv:

I just want to say thank you for all the fantastic donations and no money will be wasted.

Heather will be back on later to let you klnow roughly how the money will be used once the wheels are sorted. ;D

Any surplus money is likely to be held ready for use by either Purrs or RSPCA Stourbridge to be paid out against receipts for Mikeys costs. We want to make it all open and above board and Heather will do regular updates so everyone can see Mikeys progress and how ther little lad is geting on.............he is so brave and so handsome  ;D ;D

Hello Purrs People,

Another Mikey fan from Cat Chat here.
I've followed Mikey's story since Heather first posted about him on CC. We are all crazy about him - he's so gorgeous and brave.
Thank you so much Gill for setting up this fund.  :thanks:
Donating was straightforward and easy. It's lovely to know that Heather and Mikey are getting the help they need and deserve.
Go Mikey - our little Boy Racer!!

Post by: heath380 on April 25, 2010, 15:58:11 PM
Hi all.....

As Gill said, just coming back on to say another big thank you to all of you who have donated today...not sure what the total is at the moment but I know the response and generosity of you all has been amazing and to update on my ideas for any excess funds raised for Mikey....

I have been having a think about how to put to good use any extra funds that are raised over and above his 'wheels' and I have several things that I would like to do for him if money (and the OH! lol) allows. My ideal would be to build a nice run onto the front of his pen....this is where there is a slight problem with the OH as I was only allowed to convert the summerhouse into a pen if I agreed to 'no run' as he wanted it to remain looking like a nice summerhouse and not another cat pen. He does rather feel that my cat obsession has taken over in our house and therefore I have to tread carefully on certain issues!lol However....I shall be working on him over the next few weeks to see if I can pursuade him to change his mind. Whilst Mikey is with me I would love to be able to have that outdoor run and fix a ramp to his pen so he could wheel in and out to his hearts content...but I obviously have others to consider but if I was given the green light then that would definately be the first thing I would want to do for him.

Failing that there are also other treatments I wanted to pursue....funnily enough Angie, Accupuncture was one of them, but I'm yet to locate an animal specialist in this area (but in fairness I haven't looked very hard yet). I have also got a further MRT treatment booked for the 7th May as I did feel that these were doing him some good....and I am also very interested in him having a Reiki treatment to see how he responds.....so there are several other things that any money raised for Mikey could be spent on to try and do the best by him. I think I would prefer to use the money on things like these in preference to puppy pads because I have been used to buying them anyway and they're now kind of part and parcel of my budget...where as these treatments would be over and above...but could be beneficial to him. I would rather use any donations on the things I probably couldn't afford to keep doing for him myself than on the things I probably could...does that make sense?

As Gill said the money raised could be held by either purrs or my local branch and I can just put receipts back to whoever as and when so that everyone on here knows exactly how their money has been spent to help Mikey....and of course I would update regularly on the forums.....

Angie - I did speak to the vet about learning to express his bladder but she was reluctant that I start doing it. Apparently it should only really be done if the cat can't pass urine on their own...as apparently putting regular pressure on the bladder can cause a problem with the kidneys.....so she recommended I just leave him as he is at the moment. Whilst expressing would be more manageable for me and keep him cleaner I don't want to do that at the risk of his health...so for the time being we're continuing as normal.....

The first attempt was a nightmare! As expected he wouldn't sit still and spent most of the time trying to play with the tape measure! :tired:

The 2nd attempt...which we video'd for you was much better because he was distracted by his food....but its very difficult to get accurate measurements of a cat in standing position when the said cat can't stand!lol....

So, although we're posting it for you to see....I will double check all the measurements when he is in standing position in his harness just to make sure we get them as accurate as we can (unfortunately all my cats were out and about so we couldn't take Mikey into the garden to do it properly at the time) but here's the video link (Apologises Shirley for the music!LOL):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ0_tz0V9KU

As Shirley says....Mikey calls for me when I leave the pen bless him....he's always shouting for attention though....as soon as he hears the back door open he's screaming 'hey mum...I'm HEEEEEERRRRRRRREEEEEEE......FOOOOOOOODDDDDD!!!!!'   :hi: LOL.....I tell you...there's nothing wrong with his lungs!!

Also wanted to add that we do a weekly run ( sometimes more than weekly) into Makro if you want me to either collect some OR let you know if they are on special offer. No problem at all. Wonder if its worth seeing how much it is for a large amount, depends if you have storage heather? say a garage? or spare room?  8)

Great pics Shirley!!

Sharon - Many thanks for the offer... I have actually got a Makro card just don't go very often so hadn't really thought of looking there for them.....I have actually just bought 2 new boxes from the wholesalers and am about 1/2 way through the existing box so I have 250 to get through before I will need anymore at the moment. If you wouldn't mind checking the prices for me next time you are in there though and pm'ing me that would be great.....are you sure they are boxes of 100 for that price though as that seems very cheap. I have done quite a bit of shopping around and really did think my wholesalers price was the best I was going to get?

Anyway, the ones I buy are by Simple Solution, 55cm x 57cm, and in a box of 100 pads....so it would be great to do a direct comparison. If they are pretty much like for like and much cheaper I can stock up from there next time!

I am quite amazed actually at how few I have had to use (in comparison) since changing his diet....it was even more apparent when I put the bins out last night. I have a green bin in the back garden which I use for all Mikey's waste...and normally its been pretty full by the end of a week. Last night I pulled it out and it wasn't even half full!! Would a raw diet mean that he would wee less too?? Since he's been on raw its the only time I've actually seen him drink form his water bowl (not saying he didn't before...I just never saw him).....if its not the raw diet then something is definately changing with his bladder control....which could be a good sign? At first it seemed like he was 'leaking' most of the time and was wet fairly constantly....more recently it would appear his bladder is filling up and then emptying.....and he's nice and dry for longer periods of time  :)
Title: Re: MIKEYS WHEELCHAIR FUND
Post by: Mark on April 26, 2010, 18:35:41 PM
That's great  :) Maybe his colon isn't putting pressure on his bladder which would probably make him more comfortable  :)

It's too early to consider that he may be gaining some control - but you never know.

Title: Re: MIKEYS WHEELCHAIR FUND
Post by: heath380 on April 26, 2010, 22:19:44 PM
Yes thats interesting Mark...I never thought of that...perhaps it could have something to do with it....there's definately something thats causing the change..I knew it had been better this week but didn't really realise HOW much better until I did the bins and realised how much less waste i.e. puppy pads there has been. Its really quite noticeable!

He's definately not gaining any control though unfortunately as he still doesn't realise he's done it until he smells it...still, little improvements are definately better than no improvements and all of these little things are making a BIG difference to both of us  :)

cheques sent in will be added to the fund  ;D

I can't understand why it needs to have a strict closing date - it isn't a competition  :evillaugh:

It has to have a closing date because we do other fund raising on Purrs and the next one is about to start and Tan has to make sure she can identify what comes in for one and what comes in for another.........................if everyone put on what fund it was for it would make life a bit easier LOL but peeps forget or dont see the space etc etc, so we need to have time between one fund raiser and another, Tan also has to sort out the money to get it to its end donation, its not just what you see on here , there is loads of work behind the scenes too.

Also what has to be remembered that Purrs work has to fit round the rest of the staffs lives too and Heather needs to know the end figure that she has available for Mikey.

However its not shut yet and there are another 4 days plus to donate if you want to  ;D
Title: Re: MIKEYS WHEELCHAIR FUND
Post by: heath380 on April 28, 2010, 22:14:20 PM
Guys....I think its only right that it closes because through your amazingly kind and generous donations you have raised an INCREDIBLE amount of money for Mikey in such a short space of time.....its more than we would (or could) have ever imagined and we are very very grateful.

It will not only get him his wheels but I can now also consider some alternative treatments that may be good for him (and I'm still working on my OH for that run on the pen  ;) ), so with the money raised we can do some incredible things for Mikey!

Mind you....I nearly threatened to take his wheels away from him tonight (before he's even got them lol) because he threw a right strop with me  :grrrrrr:

I was taking him for his daily walk around the garden...thinking that all my cats were safely indoors but numpty here forgot to lock the cat flap (too intent on trying to get out the door without any of them slipping through my feet!)...so low and behold George turns up in the garden...watching from a 'safe' distance. Well Mikey's like a dog with a bone and just makes a beeline for him at a great rate of knots!! George freaks out (as he's a bit of a scaredy cat at the best of times) runs across the garden and up the fence and Mikey takes off after him and yep.....pulls himself straight out of the harness!! He's going beserk to get to George (who is now actually long gone by now) and is going like a rocket round the garden on his bum (kind of reminded me of when you let the air out of a ballon and its skimming along the floor with no sense of direction). Well obviously I went to try and pick him up and he told me in no uncertain terms he WAS NOT   :grrrrrr: :grrrrrr: ready to finish his mad 5 minutes and I would just have to wait!! For such a cute little cat he was quite scarey!lol.

Anyway...in the end and with sleeves pulled down over my hands damage limitation) I picked him back up and put him in the pen. Within 10 mins I had the cute, purry  and fussy little Mikey back. He apologised for his strop  :cat rub: :cat rub: and said pleeeeeease could he still have his new wheels....... :car:

I said he needed to think about his bad behavouir and I would let him know in the morning!!LOL Good job he's got all you nice people wanting to see him in them!! Dread to think what he's going to be like when he gets them....Speedy Gonzales (sp?) springs to mind! LOL

Its been quite a stressful night...LOL...off to bed now...

Glad you liked my bow Sue P  ;)

The final total for Mikeys Wheelchair Fund is a massive

£686.76

All I can do is once again say thank you to everyone who has contributed

The money is on its first stage of transfer to day and will be ready for use by Heather in about 7 days time. It is going to be held in safe keeping for her by her RSPCA branch at Stourbridge, who were the initial saviours of Mikey and paid for him to be treated, saving his life.

They will release the money to Heather as there are bills to be paid when she has the paperwork..............I am sure the first payment will be for Mikeys Racing Turbo Wheels complete with Go Faster stripes

No lol, its just wheels and a support for his back end and the turbo part is Mikeys front end cos he currently has a harness which he can be walked in with Heather holding the harness bit and he races around the garden so fast she has to run and still cant keep up with him lol.

He was loaned some wheels by our Angie but he kept slipping out of them and thats was why this fund was started so he could have some tailor made wheels sso he could get around by himself under supervion............he is a real racer boy  ;D

I know Heather was still struggling to get the measurements correct at end of last week because this is very important, Mikey was not being cooperative, just thought it was a game with a tape measure that he could play

I dont know the exact answer but would think within a month once order is placed.

WOW everybody you are all TRUELY AMAZING and we are both TRUELY GRATEFUL!!!  :wooooo: :wooooo: This will be me and Mikey on friday night :drink: (not with fund money though!!LOL Better make that clear!!)

Mikey is doing brilliantly....and I am hoping to get his wheels ordered in the next two days...

I was hoping to have done it by now but I have been manic at work with steep deadlines to meet and everything that could go wrong has gone wrong so I've not had a moment spare. I'm hoping the next 2 days will be better :-) . I think it normally takes about 2 weeks for the cart to be built. I guess it depends on how many orders they have at the time but thats the indicator they give on the website.

He's definately not getting an electric wheelchair though! lol....you are right I have enough on my plate with him...he's quick as lightening on those musclely (sp?) front legs as it is without him being turbo charged!lol

I keep telling him he's got more money than I have now....he just looks at me and gives me a big Mikey smile!lol

I'll also try and post a new video of him in the next few days. He has a new playcube which he is rather enjoying until his wheels arrive :-) .

Don't worry...there will be plenty of new pics and videos posted when they arrive

One thing I have done over the last few days is speak to a lady from the gun control network. I saw an article in the Catchat newsletter about this and they are interested in gathering data about all low pressure weapon related incidents so I contacted them to add Mikey to their statistics. If anyone else has been affected by these weapons they are keen to hear from you....especially if the incident was reported in the press. This is an extract from the email they sent me and summarises what they are all about:

"There are so many dead and injured cats and sadly rarely is there a prosecution for these acts of animal cruelty. Prosecutions however aren't the answer, we want to prevent the cruelty happening in the first place and the way to do this is to stop criminals and irresponsible people having airguns by changing the law so that all airguns have to be registered. The so called 'low powered' guns are actually high powered enough to kill and injure adults and children as well as pets and wild animals. They can be bought without any background checks at all and are regularly used to enable crime such as armed domestic violence, armed robbery, etc, and of course animal cruelty. Because airguns don't need any form of license those who have been banned from having firearms by courts, those who have been in prison, and those who have had airguns and other weapons taken off them and destroyed on the orders of a judge, can still go out and by airguns, either from a dealer or from a private seller.

Shotgun owners have to go through a registration process, airgun owners do not, shotgun owners have to ensure that their shotguns are safely stored at all times, their premises are inspected to make sure this is happening. Airgun owners can and do leave guns loaded and accessible to others. This lack of legislation about safe storage is why children are able to access airguns and use them in 'shooting games' with fatal consequences.

We are not calling for a ban on airgun, merely registration in the same way as shotguns have to be registered, but despite support from many Members of Parliament it has still not happened, and the deaths and injuries continue."

It seems appropriate that I should mention this on Mikeys thread and here's a link to their website:

http://www.gun-control-network.org/GCN02.htm

I thought Mikeys was an isolated incident but I was horrified just how many people have been affected in some way by these weapons. They may feature Mikeys story on the website at a future date...

Thanks again though everyone.....from Me and Mikey!!! (or Mikey and I for those of you that like correct grammar!lol)
Nite nite x

I've only just seen this thread - what wonderful people you all are!!!

I'm afraid I have no spare pennies after having to pay my excess for Katie's treatment this month :-( but last year when she had some x-rays they could see what they thought was an air gun pellet in her top half (her fat had kept it away from anything serious!)

I just wondered if you could or should contact your local TV station to do a piece on Mickey when he has his new wheels? It may raise the profile of the branch, Purrs and also of course perhaps find him that loving home he deserves?!

Had another loveley couple of hours with Mikey today! I sat in the pen with him for a while, then got a bit claustrophobic so decided to go talk to Arthur for a bit. Mikey had other ideas! He was by the door, thinking he was going for a 'walk' and so i couldn't get out! EVENTUALLY, i managed to tempt him into the main part of the pen and made my escape! I then went to sit with Arthur-he is just such a sweetheart, with the deepest meeow i've ever heard! As old as he is, he managed to jump onto one of the cat trees to use as a stepping stone to my lap! Had a bit of fuss, then climbed into his bed for a nap!
I asked if Mikey could go in his run (felt awful disturbing Heather cos she is SO busy!) but she set it up and he was having a good old sniff. One of her own cats appeared after a while, a gorgeous calico (?) called Millie. He was fasinated by her! Every time she moved, he moved so he could still see her! At one time she was peeping under the door of the pen, Mikey shot fom one end of his run to the other, knocked his carboard box out of the way, just so he could see her! SO CUTE!!!

Here's a couple of pics-not the best!

LOL Mikey WAS one hot cat but I had him neutered before he came into my care!! As he was not only a hot cat he was also an incredibly smellly one too! LOL. Millie would eat him for breakfast

BREAKING NEWS!!!! I have ordered MIKEYS WHEELS!!!! :wooooo: :wooooo: :wooooo: :wooooo:

I phoned the company today and had a really lovely chat with the guy that makes them. I have gone for the cart that he can lie down in. He said if he had any movement in his back legs when he is in the harness the other type would be better but because he hasn't then the laydown one would be best as his feet are tucked up and therefore won't drag along the floor. It doesn't sound easy to get him in it though so we will have to perservere and have a few struggles I suspect before we work out a system! There is a cat in one on their website though in the picture gallery....so I know it can be done!!lol
The good news is he said my measurements sounded about right but there is a certain amount of adjustment built in anyway so thats great! The other bit of good news is they gave me 15% discount because he is a rescue cat...so the total including delivery is £219 :-).
I did say I was really worried that where everyone has donated to help him get his wheels how embarrasing it would be if he just doesn't take to them...and he said if that is the case if I returned then within 30 days then they would offer a 70% refund! I'm sure he will be fine with them but that did give me a bit of peace of mind!
So he was just going to start manufacturing the next batch of carts this afternoon so Mikey's order just snuck in!! Hopefully in about a fortnight he should have them! Yippee!! He will so love it when he can get about on his own!

So.....in two weeks time watch this space.....!!!!!!!

Thanks again all you wonderful people   :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:   :thanks: :thanks:

Thanks Zoe. I know when he does get used to them he'lll be off like a rocket if the way he is on the harness is anything to go by....the only thing that holds him back on that is me...I just can't keep up (its kind of hard because I need to keep close but don't want to step on his tail and if he has a quick change of direction I have to make sure he doesn't floor me!) It makes me laugh actually because when he's trying to run and I'm not quite keeping up with him his ears go back and he pushes his little chin out and really starts to pull harder with his front legs....a bit like on a treadmill....all the effort is there but he's basically not gaining much ground! lol

I told him his wheels were ordered and he smiled and did some mega purrs to show his appreciation to you all :Luv: :Luv:

Wonderful news Gill, thats brilliant! Thank you soooo much everyone!

Sorry I've been so quiet over the past few days....had a disaster on friday when I turned my computer on and my eight hours of work from thursday had been completely wiped out! (could've cried) so I've been playing catch up and have had to work most of the weekend  :(

Still, I've caught up now and am back on track so I've managed to take a couple of videos of Mkey as promised  :)

The first one is one that I haven't taken before and thats of MIkey and I having a nice fuss and cuddle at bedtime. I've left the sound on the video so you can hear what a lovely purr he has  :Luv2:. There are quite a few shots of the back of his head in the first half but perservere as there are some really cute shots later on!!
The second video is Mikey enjoying his playcube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1czVmduU57g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdLKjunfRyk

He has spent a bit of time in his outdoor pen today and when I peeped at him he was happy watching the birds, pouncing on the midges, and lounging on his picnic blanket  8)

The OH has also agreed (finally relented?!) that I can sort out some sort of pen/run for Mikey so that he can have a bit more freedom when his wheels arrive. I am really happy about it as if I can keep him safe from harm in an enclosure of some kind he can be in his wheels for longer periods of time (than just the half hour when I can round up my 4 and lock them in!lol)and have so much more independence. Just got to decide on the best way to do it now.....dead excited to get both sorted though!!

Title: Re: MIKEYS WHEELCHAIR FUND
Post by: heath380 on May 14, 2010, 23:41:30 PM
Well Mikey's wheels turned up today!!  :wooooo: :wooooo:
However....he's not too impressed at the moment!lol  :omg:
I tried to put him in them and he slipped his head straight under the front strap and dragged himself straight out..so they needed adjusting a little. I did make some adjustments and tried again tonight but he was more interested in sinking his teeth into my wrist this time when I was trying to get him in ( no one said it would be easy!Lol)  :grrrrrr:
So I don't want him to get stressed over them so for tonight I just took them down to the pen and let him have a good sniff and rub round them - and he's had a play with one of the straps....so we'll just go slowly slowly with them, and hopefully we'll get there eventually! Lol
I'm sure the first time I can get him in them and he realises what they're for they'll be no stopping him!!  :car:

As for Arthur...well I took him to his new home tonight!! I felt really sad on the drive over as he's been such a lovely old boy to look after. Mind you, I'm not in the slightest bit worried about him! He came straight out of the carrier, had a sniff around, meowed for some food. While Chris (his new dad) sorted his food out he was meowing at his feet and then scoffed the lot lol. He then disappeared for a while and was curled up in one of the beds they have for him upstairs. He then came back downstairs jumped up on the arm of the chair had a big fuss then a play with his fish. He is just the happiest and luckiest boy in the world (but by golly, after what he's been through he certainly deserves it!)
Juat hope they still love him after he's doing his 'cawing like a crow' impression in the morning! LOL LOL

Well peoples generousity and thoughtfulness never cease to amaze me!! Today when I got home there was a padded envelope on my mat addressed to Mikey...I thought 'Blimey he really is getting his paws under the table if he's having his mail sent here!
Anyway...inside were 3 lovely toys for him that Pav (who I'm reliably informed is Papillon on the forum) had bought him from the Purrs shop and sent to him as a surprise! He really is such a spoilt boy....and what a lovely thought..... :thanks: Pav, and these are from Mikey :cat rub: :cat rub: :cat rub:
I've posted some 'action shots of him playing with one of them so you can see him appreciating them :)

On the wheels front....they are still proving a little difficult at the moment which is really frustrating!!! I just wish that I could have a sensible conversation with him and explain what is happening when I'm trying to put him in this metal contraption!lol
He's not completely stressing over it tbh which I guess is a good thing, and I've had him kind of sitting ON it rather than IN it, which again I guess is a start, but because I can't get him to stand properly in it at the moment I can't adjust it properly...so its really very frustrating because I know how much better his life will be when he accepts them!
I will try and speak to the company in the next couple of days and explain the problems I'm having and see if they've got any suggestions.
I've managed to do a little run for him which is much bigger than any proper run off the pen would ever be so once he's in them he's got a lovely space now to just run around and enjoy himself in....so we're all ready for him and his wheels as soon as he is......the good news about the run is I can also take him for a walk in there on his harness without having to round all my 4 cats up into the house, so for that alone, its already proving to be a godsend!lol
I did use some of his Piggy bank money to buy the stuff to do it (hope thats ok with everybody!) so here's Mikey's own private garden when I can get him using his wheels:

Just a thought Heather - on Messy Beast there is a section about cats with disabilities, and they talk about cats in mobility carts, in particular one called Hector, who was a resident at the Ingleside Cat rescue who - as it turns out - have a listing on cat chat

I wonder if maybe anyone at Ingleside might be able to chat with you about it and have any advice they could offer?  I know it's been a while since Hector passed on, but may be worth a try?

Hi all....thanks Gill for posting the link.....saves me writing everything twice lol.

He's not really scared of his wheels just wont put all his legs in the right places to make them work! Its very frustrating as I know if he would just do as he is told he would be off like a rocket! I have spoken to the company though and I am sending it back and they're going to make some adjustments for me so fingers crossed it will be second time lucky  :)

Sue P - thanks for the info on Messy Beast.....I did send an email to them to see if they had any advice but it bounced back....although I did struggle to find an email address so the one I did find may not be current.....I will look again but if anyone knows it could they pm me with it?

1would try ringing them as not even sure if they are still a cat rescue -i knew the owners  for a while but lost touch a few years ago .
There should be a number on there that may work though - i can''t remember it but i think it had a lot of 2s in it !

Not been there for about 4 years now.
Her husband died and a friend moved in to help with things.
They still took in cats then but  don't know if they still do.
They both must be almost 70 now.

Well Mikey had a kind of 'fitting' in his homemade cart (I took him a bowl of tuna which he ate with his legs hooked over his cart!lol) which made be realise 'his bum looked big in this' (lol)and we need to widen the back section by about 2 inches so need to go and get some more supplies from Wickes...and the side sections which should come to his shoulder stuck out past his ears lol so need to shorten them by a few inches too.....still....we will get there! I'm popping to Denises tomorrow (who has a sewing machine) and is very kindly going to sew the velcro strips onto the harness for me which I hope will be firm enough to keep him joined to the cart (if not Ria's plan B may come into action!)....and then finally when we get it all correct, the OH is going to bond it all together for me (as at the moment the joints swivel so we need to make sure they stay firm)...so I do hope to try and have him in it by the end of the bank holiday weekend if possible :-). So watch this space!

Another News Flash!! Mikeys run is going up tomorrow!! Just hope the weather starts to improve so he can get out in it...he's fed up of being in his pen today...

I did put him in the harness and opened the door to see if he wanted to go out (despite the fact it was raining) and unfortunately he did :-( lol....so we both got wet but he enjoyed himself :-) x

I'm sure you'll get ther in the end with his equipment  :Luv2:

He's a little surviver and that's all that matters really.

Hope the weather stays decent to getthe run up. It's been raining most of the day here and then foggy. Typical Bank Holiday Weekend Weather I suppose!

Here's some pics of me and Mikey (in his cuddle pants) lol. I call them that because they are actually a pair of really soft 'shortie type' knickers which I put a santitary towel in and just knot them at the back.....it means then that I can pick him up and have him on my knee for a proper cuddle...which as you can see he loves (and I don't get wee'd on :-) ). It was my idea for him being able to go into a house but unfortunately they too drag off if he is on the floor :-(. Still, they work fine for a cuddle so they serve a purpose in some way.
I have been meaning to say that I am seeing much more movement in his tail lately! Its flicking quite a lot and what is REALLY interesting is when he is in his support harness and he wee's his tail actually lifts off the ground and is level with his body! His tail has shown no movement at all in all the weeks I've had him up until the last two! It still may be 'reflex' but if it is its 'reflex' that he wasn't getting before! I am wondering if its as a result of the last MRT therapy session he had, as it all kind of ties in?
The only problem with him lifting his tail if he wee's in the harness is it shoots straight out the back.....and yep....guess who's always behind him :-(....my shoes are getting a soaking, and if I'm not careful also the leg of my jeans...yuk!lol  >:(

Hopefully his wheels will get sorted soon. I am racking my brain about some extra strong velcro I saw. It is a 3M product. I have a feeling it was Wilkinsons I saw it in. I will have a look.

Well folks what a day! I haven't stopped from the minute I got up. I sorted out Lucy (new foster cat) and Mikey, fed my own then got myself sorted (we always come last with cats don't we??!!lol). The people came to look at Lucy...which was great because they'd been homechecked and they loved her...so off she went to her new home. Then I quickly had to sort out the outdoor section of her pen to pop Mikey in whilst his run was being built...then it was a quick bit of gardening to sort out Mikeys grass (I bought two big trays and filled them with compost then bought turf which I cut to size....so that he has a nice cool grassy area to sit on in his pen :-)) then I planted his lavender and catnip...so he's got nice things in there to sniff....then the run (feel like I should call it a 'shuffle' for Mikey lol)turned up.....then I put all the things in it for him and let him enjoy it (which you will see in the video)....then jumped in the car to go to Denises to sort out his harness....then back to feed the cats....then the OH.....then finally uploaded the vids for you all to see!
HE IS LOVING IT!!!
There are still things I want to do...tomorrow I want to get some decking squares to get him off the concrete and I need to fix him a little ramp to get in and out easier (although tbh he's managed it fine today) but I don't really want him dragging himself up there all the time....so still things to do but take a look and see for yourself :-)
Mikey says a big thank you to you all for making it possible for him to have such a lovely outdoor space! I have been watching him on and off and he has had a lovely time....he's been on the decking enjoying the early evening sun...he's been in his little house with his head and paws sticking out sniffing the air...and he's been playing with his toys....but the bit he really loves is being able to decide for himself whether he want to be in or out. This run really will change his little life for the better, and we are so grateful.
So...just his supper and cuddle time to sort out now....then a BIG cup of tea and BED....can't wait...I'm knacked LOL....but I have one very happy little boy :-D
Anyway...take a look..its very exciting!!

Just so everybody is aware I have used some of the funds raised to buy the pen but my branch has also put £100 towards it so not all of it has come out of Mikeys Piggy Bank.....(all the extras I have done to go in it though I have paid for myself as I don't want to use the funds for 'incidenatals')

Hmmm....I had thought about the lawn mower problem and figured I may just have to give it a trim with the scissors!lol

Hi All.....sorry I've been absent for a while....I've been mega busy at work again and then most of the time when I'm home I'm with Mikey or my other foster cat....but here's a little update from last week when I was off....

he had a day of doing two new things.....firstly I decided to let him out of his run into his 'safe' area on his own to shuffle about without the harness on. I blocked it off so that he couldnt get down the side of the shed where it would be very rough on his undercarriage...I just thought it would be nice for him to be able to do what he wanted for a while without the feeling of any confinment...and he did seem to enjoy himself as you can see from the pictures below  :)

His other 1st  was he came into the house! Well...the conservatory...my cats would have a problem with him being in the main house but it was lovely to be able to sit and watch a bit of telly knowing he was still getting some company! So...I bought some 'huggies' and cut a tail hole and then we were away! He got on really well as the wooden floor was really easy for him to slide over and because there was no 'drag' the nappy stayed put!! So he had a good hour in there just zooming around and stopping for the occasional sprawl and wash and brush up! I of course captured this historic moment for you all on video :-)
I then suddenly thought 'hang on its all gone very quiet where is he??' I got up and walked around but couldn't see him and thought he must be under the sofa....which I went and sat back down on...only to then spot him under the dining table on top of the dining chairs!!I tell you...there's no stopping him! there he was stretched out as happy as larry, and I thought 'Oh thats lovely' until I spotted the nappy on the floor(which hadn't survived what must have been an almighty big heave ho to get onto the chair)and then I thought 'EEkkk!! My lovely cream (and expensive) dining chairs!!!'

Needless to say he was scooped up pretty quick and in the absence of letting me put the nappy back on he was unfortunately deposited back to his pen.....still it was a good first outing, and proved that there is hope that he could live in a house with wooden flooring quite comfortably :-) x

Gail, as you may know, i've seen Mikey lots of times 'in the flesh' The first time i went, i was dreading it, but Heather was SO desperate in the early days, i HAD to go to offer my support! I had a bag full of tissues ready-but i never cried and haven't since! It IS upsetting to see him dragging his legs but he's SUCH a happy little boy it doesn't seem to bother him at all. Obviously this isn't the best way for a cat to be living but, Heather has done brilliantly with him and would love him to be rehomed somewhere where he has a lot more company, which he loves, and live in the home.
For her sake, i'm praying that special person comes along soon-though i know she'll be really upset to see him go-but she looks so tired sometimes, as her life seems to revolve around him. She has 4 cats of her own, another foster cat and a very demanding, full-time job! I don't know how she does it!  (Sorry Heather, hope you don't mind me saying that!) If anyone deserves a medal for perseverance, she does!
I must admit i was the first to say he should've been pts at the start and again when he'd seen the specialist and she was told there was no hope, but that wasn't an option for her! She is an amazing lady!

Oddly enough, my OH wouldn't watch Mikey's video for the same reason, which is a shame because Mikey is so clearly happy and isn't letting his disability inconvenience him at all.

BBC One are running a series at the end of this month called "The Bionic Vet" - one of the subjects featured is a cat who lost his back legs after a run in with a combine harvester.   Obviously not quite the same injury as Mikey, but the point is that cats are cleverer than we often give credit for - and considering we all know how clever cats are, that's saying something.  :)

Had so little time lately that I've only just caught up with this thread again.....I too watched the bionic vet and Oscar was amazing.....I cried my eyes out the first time he got his little 'cork' feet and went running off and climbing into all the places he shouldn't have gone.....and the surgeon was just SOOOO lovely with him that made me cry too  :'( :'( :'(

If only I could find a little miracle like that for Mikey :(

Shirley thank you for your kind comments....I generally try and post postively on the forums but it has been hard at times (and still is!lol) juggling time and still trying to give Mikey a good quality of life and comapnionship, but you have seen me and yes at times I get very tired......

BUT...Mikey is Mikey and we have such a special bond that I could never contemplate not keeping him alive. I do fully understand people not wanting to watch the videos......although as Mary says, I think the ones of him on his harness running around like a normal cat are just so heartwarming, not upsetting at all.....

The first time I saw him was in the vets.....he had been in there for 5 weeks and no one was making the decision on whether he should be pts or kept alive and given more time. I asked to see him and was taken through to the back where they popped him onto the floor and he just sat there with his little back legs poking straight out between his front ones and he started to shuffle about having a good old sniff at the other animals in the cages. I rather embarassingly cried my eyes out in front of the nurses...and at that point I thought how could we have kept this poor little boy alive! I went home and cried my eyes out some more at the thought of him being kept in the vets pen...messing on himself and not being able to move away from it....and thought if  we do make the decision to pts then how awful that he'd end his days having been cooped up for weeks at the vets. So I decided to go and get him out of there!I just felt that even if I only kept him for a week or two and the decision was made to pts then at least his last memories would have been looking out of the pen at the grass and the sky and smelling the fresh air...and having lots of cuddle and playtime.

I'll never forget the day I collected him. It was a sunday morning and when I got him home he was filthy as they hadn't had time to clean him up.....and I can also remember thinking 'oh my god Heather what have you gone and done...how are you ever going to cope????!!!' Hence my thread started on cat chat as I was just desperate to know how I was going to manage and was after any advice I could get.......but the rest is history! He himself showed such a fighting spirit and a will to live that I just felt I owed it to him not to give up on him.....and slowly between the two of us we have figured out a way forward that hopefully gives him a good quality of life.....he's certainly happy, healthy (and clean!) and for as long as he is I shan't give up on him and will continue to do as much as I can for him including trying to find him a proper home.

The only thing I feel guilty about is not being able to give him as much time as he deserves....he's actually pretty easy to look after now.....but its finding the time to give him as much company as he wants....and the time to get him on his harness running in the garden. I make sure I do several things with him every day, but he really needs someone who can do these things with him not just once every day but several times really....and just be there with him as he loves having company......as you can see from the pics :-)

Don't get me wrong.....I don't like to see him dragging his legs...but somehow he's got such a big personality that when you meet him people see beyond the disabilty (just like we do with humans!). I watch him sometimes from the upstairs window and I see him lounging on the scratching platforms in his outdour pen....lying in his hammock having a good ol' wash....chasing the flies and midges.....laying in the shade under the bushes.....and at all those times he is exactly the same as a normal cat.....its only when he's moving between doing those things that he's different......but he can still do it on his own.....so he has his independance...he just does it different to the norm!lol

Here's some pics taken tonight of him having a cuddle with me on the sofa......I think you would say he's a happy contented little boy

Heather, I think the pictures speak for themselves - you have helped a courageous little fellow to enjoy an excellent quality of life - had he not been up to it, or not wanted it, then (being a cat) he wouldn't have grasped the opportunity with both paws.  You had the foresight to reailse what Mikey needed (and wanted) and to give it to him by the bucketload.  I'm certain that someone out there would be able to give Mikey full time care too, but maybe they just don't know about him yet.  Here's hoping they will, and will be able to emulate what you're doing for him.

I agree with Sue - if Mikey hadn't wanted this chance, he'd have made it quite clear. Cats very rarely do something they aren't happy about. Mikey looks so happy and loved, well done Heather!

I have to confess to Mikey moving me to tears every time I see his pic or a video, firstly because the human race inflicted his condition on him and secondly because he is such a delightful happy little soul

Heather - Is it worth contacting the surgery where Noel Fitzpatrick works? A well worded introduction and explanation of his injuries/condition, perhaps along with a video?

I went again yesterday-he amazed me by pulling himself up the steps of his cat tree and having a snooze, not surprising really as he ate almost a whole pouch of food for his dinner   :wow:

Heather also still has Joey, who is SO cute-can't believe he hasn't been snapped up yet!       :Luv2:   (He's on the 2nd pic!)

Oh Heather your last post made me cry again!! :thanks: I don't know if cats feel happiness in the exact same way that we do, but it's a pretty good description of the mix of feeling safe/ contented/ playful/ attention seeking (even when not hungry) that they definitely do display with their chosen human(s). Mikey is either pretty 'happy' with his situation or he is a great actor!  :Luv:

Hi All, Haven't been around for a while as I am just so busy at work, got a few home 'issues' and rspca stuff to do so its been manic lately.....just caught up with the Russian cat thread and thank you Gill for Mikeys mention.....even in the UK it is incredibly difficult to find a home for a disabled cat.....I haven't had one enquiry about Mikey and he is a pretty well publicised cat!lol (When people thought I may have him pts then I did have a couple of rescues willing to take him but its really a proper home he needs).

The Russian cat looks lovely though...and if a fund is set up to bring him to the Uk I would of course contribute. I would also have my reservations about the stress of such a journey (any of my normal cats would completely freak out and it would appear that it would bother him even more) but you can tell the lady that found him cares deeply and would only send him if the vets felt he would cope with it all....

Mikey is still doing fine though...and is his normal chipper self! I still feel very guilty about the amount of time I have to leave him on his own though now I am much busier at work, but I do try and give him as much time as I can in the evening....and most evenings we do get chance for a cuddle on the sofa which he loves as you saw from the last pics  I start a new job in September though which will mean my hours will be even worse so it would be lovely if the right home came forward for him before then. If not what I need is a cat creche! I was thinking about this the other day....I need someone local to me that I could drop him off at in the morning and pick him up at night on my way home...just like you do with kids ...that would solve all my problems knowing he had company all day.

I found a big pigeon feather in the carpark at work yesterday so I bought it home and gave it to Mikey at bedtime.....he LOVED it!! I was watching him on the monitor (from the kitchen) tossing  it up in the air and having a really lovely time with it. Its just finding him things that are a bit different from his usual toys to keep him entertained when I'm not around.

I am also observing him more and more with other cats....I take Joey out on a harness now and if I take him up to Mikeys run they will have a sniff through the bars and a little bat of the paws....and Mikey does chirp at him and I think...hmmmm, maybe he would be ok with other cats....then he'll spot one of mine and he'll slink to the floor with his ears flat and stalk them. The other day he then rushed at George (my tabby boy) who was sat by the makeshift fencing and gave him a right wallop over the head! Poor old George didn't know what hit him!! So one minute he's fine the next naughty. I do think he really only wants to play but if he went to a home with other cats someone would have to be very experienced with introductions and very patient I think with the whole process!!

Anyway..bedtime for me.....once again thanks for all your lovely comments.....Mary I especially like the 'who needs George Clooney' one    I told Mikey and he just smiled up at me as if to say 'that womans got taste!'

I love the fact he's mischievous too.   :evillaugh:  (Poor George, though. )

I hesitate to suggest it, but I wonder if it would be possible to approach your local tv station to do al ittle piece on Mikey?  I know you'd vet any potential owner within an inch of their life (because the danger with doing something like that is you often get a lot of unsuitable prospective owners amongst the suitable ones) but not sure if you think this would be a viable option?

Anyone who is still resisting the videos HAS to watch 'Mikey's night time playtime', it has to be a candidate for cutest cat video of all time! You cannot see any of Mikey's back end at all so there really is nothing to make you do anything other than smile.  :)

Edited to add: posted the above at 4am with insomnia on full blast ....  :-[ You can see Mikey's back end a little bit, but not at all from minute five onwards which is the part I meant. Many apologies.

Maryas....you are right he would have loved the pigeon! Actually Alfie bought a mouse into the garden the other day so I went into 'mouse rescue' mode....Mikey was watching it all intently and when I'd got it safely trapped in the box ready for release I did think 'Ooooooh he would luuuurrrve this mouse!' but I just couldn't bring myself to do it to the poor little thing....I think he would've got munched!!!! :-:

Sue P - LOL he IS misceivious!! He has bundles of personality for sure! ;) ;) Not too sure about the TV stuff....tbh wouldn't know where to start with it all and at the moment I just don't have the time to research it.....probably may go down that route a bit later on if nothing comes up for him....

Purrdy1 - I think the cat creche idea is a great one too!lol. I will find it incredibly difficult to part with him and at the moment he does have a pretty good life with me......but, if the truth be known I am exhausted (its been quite a journey!) and when its winter and its freezing cold and he's stuck in that pen all day (which is heated) while I'm at work it will kill me. I'm not really comfortable with lots of different people coming to the house and giving them access when i'm not here so thats not really an option I want to consider. I don't mind Shirley coming round and she has been really good but she can't be here all the time....so when the winter sets in and the new job starts it going to get much harder  :( :( :(

Gill - I agree Mikey was cute in the box.....well, he's just cute all the time really (apart from when he's having a strop!!)

Firefox - it was lovely to re-watch that video.....mind you.....how dirty were his feet!! LOL. And I hear he is being spoilt and has a present on its way to him!! (Thank you soooo much) :thanks:

Today when I got home from work I let him out into his outer run and he was chasing all the little midges and moths that were flitting about the grass....it was very sweet to watch. Then tonight he had his supper, snuggled up to me in the pen, purring his head off and went to sleep completely worn out :tired: (pics below) :Luv:

Hi there...thank you so much for your offer of support...the thing is all I want for him is the perfect home and I'm not sure how we would go about finding it?? Whilst creating awareness and doing appeals etc wold perhaps be a way of that home coming forward I just don't have the time to vet lots of people if it did snowball a bit out of control...so feel a bit apprehensive about it.

I want someone to really want him....despite being knackered and worried about the winter....I still couldn't let him go to anywhere unless I was 110% convinced he would be loved and cared for in the right way. I know it sound silly but how knowing how hard it can be I am worried that someone may take him on and all be ok for a few months then they get fed up of looking after him and start to neglect his needs....crazy I know but that thought really worries me :-(

Mind you....on a positive note I think he may just be ok with other cats.....as long as the other cats are quite laid back!llol.  I've been taking my other foster cat Joey out in the garden on a harness as he's been cooped up in the pen in this lovely weather......I've introduced him to Mikey a few times through the temporary fencing but today I took him into Mikeys enclosure for a few minutes....and Mikey was quite a good boy! He had a good sniff....did paw at him a few times but was quite happy to have a fuss with me whilst Joey went off for a sniff around. Mind you, then Mikey did rush a bit at Joey and took him by surprise so he wanted out.....but for a first introduction I think it went pretty well  :)

If you don't feel able to seriosusly look for a forever home, I am certainly willing to spend time on a campaign to get creche facilities for Mikey. My only idea is a Catbook page for Mikey, could RSPCA/ CP locally do the vetting and homechecks? If not maybe there is someone on Purrs who could do the telephone filtering? We don't want to push anything on you that you cannot cope with. It does not sound crazy AT ALL that you are thinking of Mikey's long term wellbeing!

Title: Re: MIKEYS WHEELCHAIR FUND
Post by: Sue P (Paddysmum) on July 26, 2010, 07:06:28 AM

It's understandable there's a lot to think about with any sort of campaign to re-home Mikey, especially when you know how much you've turned this little guy's life around - you're bound to be apprehensive about surrendering his care to anyone else, permanently or temporarily.  As Fire Fox says, no-one would push you into doing anything you didn't feel 110% comfortable with where Mikey's concerned.

However, if you did decide that was a way forward, it may be possible to ask any prospective owners to complete a questionnaire first and maybe throw in a couple of testing questions about care/attitude etc to weed out the patently unsuitable early on.  And maybe someone else could do the "weeding out" for you?

Meanwhile, sending a big MOnday Mornign Smile to Mikey  ;D , and a hug for you.

Thank you both, I hope I didn't come across as ungrateful :-[    I am really grateful that you are willing to donate some time to help Mikey and me

FireFox......I don't really know what a catbook page is but it sounds interesting! I like the creche idea for Mikey but I guess its got to me local enough for me to be able to drop him off and collect him. My absolute ideal would be someone that thinks they may be able to offer him a home but is perhaps a bit apprehensive about how much is involved and could they really cope and are a bit nervous about making the 'full' jump into a lifelong commitment without really knowing. We could start off with him going there a few days a week and gradually increase it as they become more confident in looking after him. It would also be lovely for him (and me! :Luv2:) to get used to his new home and feel comfortable with the new people without his whole little world changing overnight. That would be the best solution for me....cos it would also waylay my fears about someone not really knowing what they are taking on and might find it harder further down the line. Do you think its an impossible dream???

I would definately want to be the one who homechecked any potential new home......I just wouldn't feel confident that anyone else in our branch (or outside the branch) would truly know what he needs and what suggestions and provisions would need to be made for his care. So.....I would definately find the time to visit anyone that is a serious contender for the right forever home  :)

Sue P - I like the idea of a questionnaire.....as you say, if someone else could perhaps do any initial vetting (as that is likely to be the most time consuming bit) then I can just pick up with the 'real' possibilities........I'll give the questions some thought......

Thanks all

Ooops...better dash, gonna be late for work!!! xx

Absolutely not!   Heather, I think all of us to some degree or another hold an ingrained belief that no-one would care for our own cat to quite the highest standards we deploy, so am 150% positive that all of us understand your desire to make sure that if Mikey has a new home, it is indeed a Forever Home, with people who will love and care for him (almost   ;)) as well as you do , and who will be totally committed to him for the whole of his lifetime.  He deserves nothing less.

I think your ideal solution is a wonderful one, and sending every positive vibe that this can somehow be made real.

I'm sure there is someone out there. it's just a simple matter of finding them  :evillaugh:

Sharon was telling me the other day about a lady that was homechecked. She is recovering from bowel cancer surgery which has left her disabled, although she says she would be able to care for a cat. Sharon said the lady so wanted a cat but wasn't convinced that she would be allowed one. Sharon said a cat that had already been homed once and given back (apparently after a marriage split - the cat was left alone 12 hours a day) to us was taken to her house. The cat was put down on the floor in front of her and he rolled over for tummy rubs. The lady was so happy when she was told she could adopt him  :) - Sharon said it is a nice ending all round as he gets a doting 24/7 slave and she gets to have a cat she didn't think she would be able to have. Sharon is convinced it will be happy ever after for both of them  :)

yup you want someone who is dedicated to this puss!..he deserves no less.....as you would  a human. Cats and dogs need that emotional and physical care an attention....mixed in with a lotta lotta love...

like my rabbits...i cared for them all through the winter, made sure they were out in good weather in when it ws dreadful and played with them indoors when it was howling.....cleaing and caring in the most adverse conditions ...all of my animals have always come first.....

Mikey has to be part of  a treasured family member.....i am sure the right person will present themselves! and i think you will know when they do....

Those photos are wonderful! Mikey definitely needs Catbook, it is just Facebook for our furballs. Loads of people use Facebook so it might be a good bit of free advertising? The oldest Facebook member is 90-something and lives in a care home, she gets loads of press attention as have some animals with unusual stories. I believe Purrs itself has a presence on the main Facebook site.

Mikey can just have a profile, or he can upload photos and videos  :Luv2: , he can have lots of Purrs friends, we can even start a 'Forever home for Mikey' group which would then be 'advertised' via the Catbook and Facebook profiles of anyone who joins the group. It was super quick to set up the basic profile, I know you are busy Heather.

For those of you who are amazed at how easy he moves around and how quick he is well as the saying goes 'you ain't seen nothing yet!!'

Here are 3 video's of our nightime routine.

1. Him rushing in for his supper (raw beef chunks...mmmmm yummy ?!)....this is when he really moves fast

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w5YW5zjQcc

2. Having his fuss after dinner...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaD1bjD0Wac

3. A little more supper (in bed!) and then having no choice than to give in to sleep...having had access to his garden run all day.....its so funny.....he can't hold his little eyes open...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4pSARrZu_c

I have left the natural sound on these video's so you can hear him chirp, meow, purr, munch his supper, and you may even hear the belch LOL ....he burps after every meal...I've always put it down to the fact that he has to eat bunched up sitting down....but maybe its just that he's a typical man!lol lol.(sorry guys ;-) )

We have also had quite a break through.....I have been doing some introductions between Mikey and my other foster cat Joey...its been going quite well and for the first time on saturday I bought them both into the conservatory together. As you can see they had quite a nice little play  :) :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI9d_7LcNcE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MJY2AVR0RA

Oh, and last but not least....one of him in his new play tunnel....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgiZBUsqyj4

As you can see he's had quite a busy weekend....no wonder he couldn't hold his eyes open! Actually, I know that feeling....off to bed now!lol x

I've known it was a possibility for a good few weeks now but just haven't dared post anything just in case it didn't all come together…but now that it has I just couldn’t wait a minute longer to share it with you all

A few weeks ago I had a lovely email from a couple called Natalie and Martyn expressing their interest in Mikey….although they have never had a paralysed cat before they have had several special needs cats, and having lost their very special little blind boy called Stuart (Little) last Sept they had been keeping an eye open for another cat who they felt needed that extra special home….

Here's the amazing bit that proves that fate has had a hand in this and in my mind it was meant to be......

They couldn’t actually live much farther away as they are in Scotland! Lol. However….Natalie works from home doing glasswork in her own studio and hence they were coming down for the Stourbridge Glass Festival at the end of August and felt it would be an ideal opportunity to spend lots of time with Mikey and see if they felt they could truly manage his care. So...of all the places in the UK they could have been going on holiday, it just so happened it was Stourbridge!

So the weekend before last, they had their first 'Mikey' visit to meet him and have a good look at the set up I have here. They then went away for a few days walking and gave lots of practical consideration as to whether they could truly take on his care. When I received the text I hardly dare read it lol, but the answer was positive, and so they have been back this weekend and spent time with him on Fri, Sat and Sun...learning all there is to know about his care.

So…..on the 25th Sept he will go to his new home....I will take him and help set him up in his new environment...stay overnight....and then visit him again before heading back down and leaving him to start his new life  :new here:

I'm sure I will be crying on and off all the way back!lol.  Of course it will be a wrench and I will miss my little man desperately, but it's what I've always wanted for him and I couldn't've wished for a nicer couple to come along and offer him a home. And with me starting my new job in September it will be a huge weight off my mind not having to worry about him stuck in my pen for long days and nights with the winter drawing in…..

They do have 2 other cats, Walter and Poppy, so as always with these things its on the premise that if he really doesn't settle with them he would have to come back, but I know that they will do the introductions slowly and give it plenty of time....and that's why I have been introducing him to Joey and getting him used to being with other cats. We all have high hopes that one day he will be sharing Poppy's bean bag in front of the Aga……

I know you'll all be as happy for him as I am...and from both Mikey and I we'd like to say a BIG thank you to all of you for your ongoing support....Natalie spotted him on Purrs and has been keeping up to date with his story on both Purrs and CC so it really is the forums that have made this all possible.... :thanks: da best

Heather, that's wonderful news.  I think we'd all love to hear that Mikey is settled in a forever home, and hope that Walter and Poppy will welcome him with the warmth he deserves in his life.

As Gill says, you'll have to try and persuade his new Mum and Dad to be to join Purrs so we can all keep abreast of his doings.  :)
Title: Re: MIKEYS WHEELCHAIR FUND
Post by: heath380 on August 31, 2010, 10:57:52 AM
Thank you all for your well wishes and kind comments

Even if his new Mom and Dad don't join the site, don't worry.....I will be in regular contact via email and will post regular updates as and when I get them....and I'm sure there'll be some pics too :-) (hopefully of Mikey and Poppy on the beanbag in front of the Aga  :Luv:)

It will be a hard to let him go, because of course we have such a special bond.....but the one thing I know from fostering is that when someone else is caring for him then they will fast become the centre of his world and I will be replaced and eventually forgotten (probably after the first week ). That may sound incredibly sad but for me that is a good thing! If I thought he would be forever pinning for me it would make it impossible to do.....the reality is (as any fosterer will know) he will move on, and probably very quickly...they always do lol.

I fostered a young Tortie once for over 3 months and had to do quite a lot to care for her. I thought she was so attached to me, but my friend and fellow fosterer Denise adopted her. There were tears when I left her at her new home and couldn't wait to get back round the following weekend to give her some fuss and cuddles....well.....when I turned up she couldn't give two hoots about me!! LOL. Just looked up from where she was sunning herself on a cushion in the lounge as if to say '...and who the hell are you???''

So......I know Mikey will move on.....and thats just the way it should be....

My tears will be because of course I will miss him, but also out of happiness, because away from the forums I know there have been lots of people that have doubted that I was doing the right thing keeping him alive....and at times its caused me to really doubt myself....him finding a loving home is final reinforcement that everything I have done has been 110% worth it and the right thing  :Luv:

To get pics of him settled in a lovely new home will be the final chapter of our journey together and nothing will make me happier xx

I went to babysit Mikey yesterday and he fell asleep on my handbag! Heather texted me and, rather than disturb him to get my glasses to reply, i muddled through-God knows what it read like    I'm going again today-have to make the most of the short time left........i'm taking my camera, so, hopefully get some decent pics!

Joey was rehomed on Sunday-i didn't know it was happening until Sunday morning-and burst into tears! He was another of my babysitting furries until Heather started keeping him in the house. Later that day, i went to a CP rehoming event and cried on Senga's (one of our CC friends) shoulder!  I felt so stupid, he wasn't even mine, but he's such a sweet little boy.   :Luv2: :Luv2: I was worried he would pine for Heather.    :(  She cried all the way home  :'(    Needn't have worried tho! He's gone to a CC lady and she posted about him-he made himself at home from the minute he got there!!!   :wow: He slept in the crook of her arm in bed the first night!  ;D

I hope Mikey will be the same-he deserves nothing but the best   :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

Fantastic pics and great news for Joey.  Don't worry about telling us you cried I'm sure I speak for a lot of us on here and CC when I say we all cry too.

2 neighbours of mine  have had cats that have died over the years and I was in tears when they told me as I used to look after them when they were on holiday.

My friend's cat was having a serious op the other weekand I was in tears just thinking what might go wrong - went purrfectly well).

People on here post that their cats are ill or just not themselves for a day or two and I worry like mad.

So glad there are fosterers like you 2 and the ones we have on Purrs - you all do a fantastic job - I failed after 4 days  :Luv2:

Well, as many of you have realised this is my last weekend with Mikey! :scared: I still can't quite get my head round the fact that next weekend I am taking him to his new home.....to say its gonna be strange without him is an understatement! Boy,what a journey we've all had together over the last 6 months eh?!

Well, I thought it only right that I share some of his last weekend moments with you all so I've taken a few videos tonight  :)

The first one is of him playing on his own in the conservatory...I was amazed I managed to capture it on video as you will see that play stops when he sees me at the door!lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UQ8O1ojB0w

The second one is of him and I having a cuddle :-). I'm a bit wobbly with the camera as he was snuggling so close it was hard to film him. After this we curled up together and slept for an hour

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWmXlWK8P7o

And last but not least....a little more playtime before bed....excuse my 'famous' awful shoes again! lol. I swear I have more pairs of decent shoes than I can wear lol but these are my 'running between the house and pens'shoes so are the only scruffy things anyone sees  ..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zfjtdh0H878

Anyway, hopefully you will enjoy the videos. I have to say, when I first bought him home 6 months ago I really wouldn't have ever believed he would be snuggling up with me on the sofa having cuddles and being indoors like a normal cat! Its so heartwarming to think he is going to a wonderful new home to live a much more normal life than I could ever have hoped for for him at the beginning. I think the videos still show his amazing zest for life and just how alert and healthy he actually is.....despite his major disability. Ok...he never did walk but in every way he is still, and always will be my 'Miracle Mikey'! (written whilst shedding a tear  :'()  da best Mikey!! xxxx

Gill - when he first goes to his new home he will have his own area in the studio that Natalie works in. Its seperate from the main house but is where she spends lots of time during the day so he will have loads more company than he has with me which is great. They will then do slow introductions into the house with their existing two cats and looking after him in the studio will give them time to understand the easiest way to manage him in the house for him to be able to spend more time in it.....but there will still be opportunity to come in for a cuddle in his nappy like he does with me  :). Everything I have here is going with him....all his scratching posts, blankets, vet bed, main bed, toys, his hut shelter...quite literally everything so that we can create a real 'home from home' for him. I am also taking my temporary fencing so that they can fence off a bit of the garden and take him for walks on the harness. He won't immediately have an outdoor pen but tbh he's more interested in company than anything. I beleive the studio has a balcony though that overlooks all the trees so I think they are going to catproof that so that they can open the doors and let him watch the birds and the squirrels  :wow: which will be lovely for him.

Just to let everyone know -  I have spent the remainder of the 'Mikey fund' stocking up at the wholesalers with all the Mikey supplies so I am going up to Scotland with quite literally a car full of stuff which should mean that Natalie and Martyn don't need to worry about anything over the first couple of months than just enjoying having him  :Luv:

Oh, I will also be sending his wheels in the hope that they will eventually be able to get him in them  as we all hoped :car:

They live on the edge of the Cairngorms national park......so next saturday we will be making the 8hr journey together
I hope to god he doesn't scream all the way there!! I'm sure we will both be ready to be out of the car by the time we get there! I will then get him settled, and have a hotel booked for the sat night before heading back down on sunday! Think I may be quite worn out by the time I get home .......

Heather I don't think there is a word suitable to describe the love and attention and care you've given to Mikey  :Luv2:

Once again I am in tears watching the videos - a mixture of thinking what could've happened to him if he'd not been saved, tears of joy knowing he doesn't let it stop him doing anything, and tears when he is having his cuddles from you - his face is just so happy and content.

It will be a long journey for you but it will be even longer coming back without him - take plenty of tissues with you for your tears.

Natalie and Martyn sound like they are gonna be looking after him really well and I'm sure he will be ok.

Well, it sounds as if this had the potential to work out to almost perfection for all concerned, regarding his new home - and a lovely part of the world to be re-homed to.  (Wouldn't mind a little cottage up near Nethy Bridge area of the Cairngorms meself  ;) :Luv:  )  I echo your sentiments that the first few months should be full of fun, followed by years more of the same.

Awwww thanks FF and Sue  I try to help out when i can, tho am only the Lost Cats contact for CP, but have transported cats to vets, recently got a neighbours young mum cat spayed (not personally!   ) , taken her 4 kittens to a different rescue centre (since rehomed!) and, last Sunday, picked up 2 cats from a lady on CC to take to  2 fosterers for  the same rescue. They had to be separated cos of lack of space and it broke my heart  :'(  I was sobbing at both fosterer's they must've thought i was mad  )

When Heather's Joey was rehomed, it was such a shock cos i didn't know it was on the cards and i cried on another CP ladies shoulder at a rehoming event on the same day  :-[ Of course, once i knew he'd settled in from the first moment and wasn't pining for her, i was fine! ;D

Heather has told me i can go to see Mikey on Friday, even tho she'll be there working, but on one condition-no crying-she knows me so well
Can't guarantee that, i'm afraid-just have to drip all over him!  ;)

I have the utmost respect and admiration for all fosterers, especially Heather, and the small rescues-i would be in tears 24 hours a day and know for sure now, having had so much contact with other cats these last few months, i could never do it.  If i can help out, i will, but every upsetting story plays on my mind for ages. Thank God there are people stronger than me!  :Luv2: :Luv2:

See ya this afternoon, Mikey lad   :Luv2: :Luv2:

I'm sure Heather will post when she gets chance but for now, i'll thank you all on her behalf!  I went round yesterday for my FINAL goodbye and, as you can imagine, Heather was very stressed thinking she'd never get everything ready in time  She was hoping to leave by 9am......

Mikey was in the conservatory and, for the previous hour, had been howling while she was trying to get some work done! Just before i arrived, he'd gone to sleep! :evillaugh:  He soon woke up and i was meant to entertain him while she started loading the car with all his stuff tho, as soon as he heard her outside, he sat by the door watching her every move!    After about half an hour, he came back to me and we had a 'Heather and Mikey' type snuggle on the sofa  :Luv2: :Luv2: (Doesn't matter that i couldn't straighten up afterwards, )

Hope you managed to get some sleep, Heather and have a safe journey, hopefully with the little man sleeping for most of it!  ;)

I'll miss you,  Mikey, my little sweetheart, hope you'll be happy in your new home  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

Well, 856miles, 3 tanks of petrol, and a good number of tears later I am home!!! Completely shattered but what a hugely successful weekend...it really couldn’t have gone any better.

Mikey was a complete angel the whole way there. If I was to add up all the ‘meows’ he did on the journey it honestly wouldn’t have totalled more than 10 mins…..unbelievable!! I think the big carrier with his bed in it was a contributory factor and the fact that the carrier was covered except for the front which was facing me helped….but he was SUCH an amazingly good boy. He slept on and off most of the way and if he stirred I just poked my hand in the zip and scratched his chin and he settled down again. We ploughed on up there and only stopped after about 5 hours as I needed to fill up with petrol (and use the loo lol) so whilst I ate my dinner I gave him something too – thinking he probably wouldn’t want it but no…this is Mikey after all….and he cleared his bowl…..so with a full stomach he had a quick wash and settled back down for the rest of the journey.

I have to say he was the perfect travelling companion…..we had some great conversation (no answering back), he didn’t moan at my singing and didn’t complain about my driving either lol.

We made good time and arrived about 4.30ish. Natalie and Martyn had decided to start him off in the dining room of the main house after all and had ingeniously partitioned off, and lino’d a section to make a pen for him…so we let him out to have a little explore (and don’t worry folks…I have it on video!!). We then popped him back in the carrier for 5 mins so I could set it up properly with all his familiar stuff in it. He didn’t bat an eyelid at all…..he was as confident as if I’d’ve just bought him into my conservatory at home! After a cuppa (me not Mikey!lol) he settled in one of his boxes so I decided to go and check into my hotel before coming back to eat with them later. I felt so happy as he just wasn’t frightened by being somewhere new at all!

When I got back about an hour later I went in to find Martyn sitting on his bum in the pen playing with Mikey and he hardly even lifted his head to me he was having such a good time. We ate our meal and he was tired and nodded off on a big cushion I’d taken with me….and was obviously content being in amongst it and part of the actionl. A bit later we popped a nappy on him and he came into the lounge with us and was off exploring like a rocket….it was about 10pm by then and the drive was beginning to take its toll on my eyelids so I went back to the hotel as he couldn’t have given two hoots if I was there or not!lol…….so a truly successful day!

The morning was harder….I was crying in the hotel room just at the thought of saying goodbye, and nearly decided it may be easier just not to go back…..but it wouldn’t have felt quite right so I did go and see him before I left for the long drive home. He had a good night and had eaten some of his breakfast….he was completely relaxed, chilled and happy. I had a cuddle, cried lots then got myself together and left.

It was soooo hard to say goodbye, but I did so knowing that he really has been a truly lucky boy and in my wildest dreams I couldn’t have hoped to have found such a wonderful home for him. I know he will be so well cared for and loved and that’s all I’ve ever wanted for him….and he will get so much more company than I could ever give him here. So as hard as it was, I know it was the best thing to do.

I have to say the drive back seemed to take forever and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so tired ( there’s nothing quite so depressing as hearing the satnav say ‘and stay on the A9 for the next 81 miles’ and then even worse… ‘ and stay on the M74 for the next 171 miles!’) I felt like I was never going to get home but I did….and promptly fell into bed for an hour!lol

I have pics to add to here of Mikey in his carrier on his way to his new home and new life…and some lovely ones that Natalie text to me of Poppy and Walter reading the ‘Mikey care manual’ that I put together, which I will post as soon as I get chance to get the pics onto my laptop and resized (prob tomorrow)..so that you can all share in his last few moments with me.

I shall miss my little man dearly….already I feel a huge loss and he’s left such a big hole….but each day will get easier and it is about time I gave my own cats some attention as they have really had to take a back seat lately so they need to come first again for a while.

When I get chance I shall post the video’s I took of him in his first day in his new home and tell you more about it. I’ve also had some wonderful pics of him sent to me already which I will share and you can all see just how happy he is to be starting his new life.

Thanks everyone for your support and well wishes over the weekend….we truly have been on the most amazing journey together thanks to Mikey  xx

I am so shattered though I'm off to my bed now.....

In tears just reading this but am so pleased you both had a safe journey and that he seems to be so happy. Guess thats Mikey, he makes the best of everything and is just a happy to be an alive little chappie  ;D

This is the greatest thing for Mikey and you should be so proud of everything you have done for him and you now need some rest and when we see all the pics and video I am sure we will shed some more tears.

Mikey has a hug fan club here on Purrs and over there on Cat Chat and am hoping that I may be able to post there again now cos I believe I have been given the info to get on again.

aww thank you both

Well, as they say one door closes, another one opens....and this is now all about Mikeys door opening to his new home :-)

So many of you have been on this journey with us and therefore how could I not have taken my camera to capture his arrival on video and share it with you all?! So here you go.....you will see just how settled he was quite literally from the moment he arrived!lol

1.His first sniff round his new area...before we'd set it up properly...this was literaly about 5 minutes after getting him out of the car! He tried to help Natalie with the cable ties lol:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wybUikwuoE

2.His first meal....about 20 minutes after arrival when his pen had been set up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjLbA6yA4v8

3.His first proper fuss with his new daddy (awww):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpJrFsEATHE

4.And finally....a bit of play time :-) :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF3mwBsiYs4

I really can't thank Natalie and Martyn enough for giving him this opportunity of a proper life as part of a family. If I could've dreamt up my dream home for him it probably wouldn't have been so good as he has now....

They have also set up a little pen for him in their studio so he can be in there with them when they are working...and thats the bit with the balcony doors where he can watch the birds and the squirrels running in the trees...he's gonna be chattering away like a good 'un lol.

Before I had even got back yesterday they had put the barrier fence up and sent me a picture of him enjoying a walk in the garden on his harness....and in the evening one of him having a snuggle on the sofa with them.

Words cannot describe how happy I am for my little man....no one truley deserves it more :-)

I have posted the pics I have been sent at the bottom. I also took a lovely one of poppy on (in!) her bean bag by the aga which we all hope one day in the future Mikey will be able to share :-).

I'm not sure whether they will join the forums and post directly (although I know they would be sooooo welcomed if they decided to) but if not, then I will post any updates I get!

In the meantime I hope you enjoy the video's!! xx

I'm over the moon for Mikey  :) I have to admit when I watch his videos I still feel sad that some mindless thug inflicted this on him but it's quite clear that Mikey doesn't feel sad - you can tell how much he loves life!  :)

You've done an amazing job with him Heather and it sounds like he has a home to match the one he had with you - fan-bloomin-tastic  :)

Hi Heather thanks for the update I was thinking about you over the weekend.  Its evident from the videos and photos that Mickey has landed on his paws in his new home. Thats not to take away all that you have done for him, it takes a very special person to show such love and dedication in caring for Mickey and that you have. I should imagine it feels very strange now without him but also very rewarding knowing he is in a very loving home.
I do hope we can continue to have updates on the little man and no doubt you will have another pussy cat to foster soon :)

However, he looks to be enjoying himself and M & N sound great.

Heather - and Shirley - I've been away the last week, but reading this brings a huge lump to my throat and a big grin to my face all at the same time.   :cuddle: :cuddle:

Am sooooo pleased that Mikey has made the adjustment without a flicker, and is clearly enjoying his new home.   ;D  Also good to see that Walter and Poppy will be the Head Nurse and Assistant Head Nurse in charge of Mikey's care and wellbeing.   ;)

An incredible journey Heather, in more ways than one.

LOL Sue, i know how you feel! I saw him the day before he went and had a 'Heather-type' snuggle with him on the settee while she was clearing out his pen. When she came back in, i had a huge lump in my throat and tears rolling down my face!  :'( She said 'No tears, i've told you, you'll start me off!' I was the same on the day he went until i had the final text saying he wasn't bothered if she was there or not!!   ;D  I couldn't believe it-i was convinced he's pine for her!  :shy:  He's an amazing little boy and, as far as i'm concerned, he'll be 'another Chloe'-a foster cat she had last year and i'll never forget her either  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

I'm going to meet her 2 new boys today-a 4month old tabby thrown from a car  >:( >:(  and a 2/3 ginger and white boy just left when his owners moved  >:( >:(

Thank you for the link Liz, a sad day for all those who were involved in Mikeys story.
