Title: Kitten found in binbag by a friend :censored: - How do I find out rough age?
Post by: Bryony84 on April 13, 2010, 10:35:40 AM
My OH just called and one of our friends has found a little black kitten in a bin bag, how anyone can do that, I'll never understand.

Anyway - he's not sure how old it is, he says its fits in the palm of his hand - but are there any other things to look out for other than the obvious like eyes still being shut. He would like to keep the kitten if it gets on with his current cat, but was concerned that it might need specialist care if it is still too young to have left its mum.

Tiny kittens
Eyes open around 10 days
Ears quite flat on head till 3-4 weeks
teeth appear around 4 weeks
Eye colour changes between 6 and 12 weeks
hope that helps.

modified to say Good Luck and keep kitten isolated until you know all is well.

Thanks T, that list was really useful. Just spoke to him again and he said that its definitely younger then you'd normally get a kitten and eyes are a greeny colour, so probably just changing. He has tried it on a little bit of kitten found mashed up with water and it ate that quite happily. Theres someone at home all day in their house so I've said to feed very small meals regularly and keep a close eye on it.

He is keeping it separate from his other cat until he has taken the kitten to the vets for a checkup and won't start any introductions until kitten has the all clear and has had its vaccs. Its funny as for a burly mechanic, he's such a big softie underneath!

Glad to hear your friend found this little one - who knows what could've happened if he hadn't. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Hope it all works out with his other cat. :)
