Title: Cheeky - a cat grieving for his owner now @ the Harbour - (HOMED!)
Post by: madkittyrescue on February 14, 2010, 11:02:47 AM
Thought we would introduce Cheeky to you all.  He came to us on Wednesday after his owner died suddenly at home on Monday of this week.

He has been an old lady's constant companion for 10 years and is utterly lost without her and it just breaks our heart to see him SO depressed and eyes so soul-less.

He has been an extremely pampered puss, though it has taken its toll on his appearance and health after a diet of Ham, Primula Cheese and Fresh Fish - no cat food whatsoever!

Poor lad is just oh so lost but we are doing everything we can to keep his spirits up including boiling him fish which seems to be the ONLY thing we have got him to eat though that took 3 days as he just point blank refused to eat anything at all for the first few days he was here.

we finally got a faint purr out of him yesterday evening but the wee look of emptiness in his eyes just breaks our hearts. We hope we can do enough to let him want to go on and live a new life but we certainly can't force that out of him and for now he needs time to grieve I think.

more news as we have it..

:'( awwww the poor little fella, is he 10yrs, he looks older? this why we started adopting oldies in the first place because it breaks my heart to see them grieving - I do feel for him (he looks alot like our Schui did :Luv:)

Aww, poor baby. Cinnamon Trust use Rescue Remedy on all their animals that are grieving (whether it be for a human or animal companion) and it seems to work well for them, so might be worth a go for him? I do feel for the oldies, poor things.

yeah we think age is right just his exceptionally poor diet makes him look old and to be honest very unhealthy.

Modified to add - we also got confirmed details re age from his vet.

Although in the pic he looks to be a little tubby - which he is the vast majority of it is loose saggy skin drooping everywhere.  Poor boy.

We really feel for him but are doing everything we can to keep his spirits up - even if that does mean a daily stink out of the house of boiled fish!

Desley - we have sworn by rescue remedy for years - always on hand! ;)

What doesn't help is that he looks a bit like my furdaughter Keli, who I miss terribly....i'm think i'm going to have a little cry now....

Well done you for taking him in and seeing to his every whim at this difficult time  :Luv:

Post by: madkittyrescue on February 15, 2010, 10:44:44 AM
Cheeky is doing as well as can be expected and I can say we are most certainly catering to his every whim at the moment with a stream of boiled fish coming from the kitchen  as it is literally the ONLY thing that we can get him to eat albeit just a little at a time.  :Luv2:

I have a sneaky suspicion that we are going to have a lot of trouble getting Cheeky onto a cat food diet as he won't even look at it let along try a bit so will be looking into supplements, etc when I get a chance with a view to making sure he is getting the nutrients he needs.

He is a little brighter in himself this morning and did actually stand up for me once I stroked his head and did eat a little fish last night too.  He does seem to enjoy his affection and bless him when you take your hand away he grabs at it with his wee paw.

He is still very low and sits and hangs his head while you talk to him but at least there are little signs of improvement so hope we can give him the will and support he needs to get over this difficult time.

We hope that this week will see Cheeky's spirits lift - will keep you all updated.

poor lad - I do hope he perks up

perhaps he'll gradually eat cat food if it is mixed into his fish in very small proportions to start?

aybe tuna whiskas supermermeat might tempt him? - mine go mad for it but you can only get it in the multipacks AFAIK - Also PAH own supermeat is really fishy (well the fish ones are  :evillaugh: ) also hi-life tins of smelly tuna are now complete - they bigger ones never used to be but they changed them. As you know, he really needs to get his taurine etc. Othwise, maybe a supplement mixed in the fish - no idea what it is called but Gillian will know.

Poor little soul.  He has such an expressive face, too.  I echo Shirley's thoughts on grieving animals.  I do hope he'll be able to find a safe place to put his paws again, and to share his need for affection.  Sending a respectful "pprrffpppt" from Paddy for cheeky.

Thanks guys  All hugs passed on to the big fella for you all.

He is doing a little better and is eating though only morsels at a time though I have managed to get him to take (eventually) some chicken as well as ham and fish though I swear every time I give him a bit of ham he looks at it as if to say - where's the primula!

He is now enjoying attention when you give it to him and will give you little purrs and rub his head gently on your hand but when you are not with him he just goes back to being listless and quiet.  BUT - we do feel that things are moving on from where he was last week when he first arrived so we just keep chipping away a little more each day.

Must say a big thank you to Gillian for helping me out with info on raw diet and supplements and I have now ordered some bits and pieces which I hope will be here this week so that we can start improving his diet.  am SO strapped for time at the moment that was a HUGE help - thank you Gillian

We have tried variety of different bits and pieces, hi life, gourmet, etc mixed with ham, fish chicken - to no avail so far!  so at least I will have this to try as well and it will at least be much more nutritious for him.

time will tell......

thank you so much for your thoughts for our wee Cheeky -its very much appreciated by us and especially Cheeky himself.

much the same to be honest Janey - though I do now have the Taurine to add to his food so that's a start and I'm still waiting on the order of raw foods for him which I'm more positive about him eating - certainly so far any kind of cat food is ruled right out no matter how I try to disguise or blend it!

Sorry for delay in replies guys - Paul & I are both choked with the cold and like the walking dead - think all these nights at the harbour taking their toll!     ;)

Well Cheeky is much the same to be honest - no real change.  I sometimes wonder if he's in there at all :(

We have a plan afoot in that once we can get him onto a food he WILL eat we are considering moving him to be with Penny at mums place.  Penny having been through the same situation and being SUCH a mother hen we think may do Cheeky some good - and in honesty Penny misses having Monday to fuss over.

At the moment we'll try anything.  We did have a call from an old lady looking for a cat but she felt Cheeky was 'too old' <sigh>

In all honesty though I don't think we'd really feel comfortable with Cheeky going anywhere at the moment he is just so 'not right'

We will be taking him into the vet most likely this week for a check over and go from there.

Janey - just got your post as I went to hit submit! lol

The raw food never arrived as the company I ordered it from decided to close down 2 days later!! <sigh>  Had a bit of a nightmare trying to find alternate supply but have now found someone who is a distributor near by and will be speaking to them Monday.  In the meantime I have ordered some food pre pared cooked foods from the All Natural Food company (think that's what its called) which I hope will be here this week so that I can start him on that.

Just not having much flamin luck at all at the moment.

Pets at Home have their own brand Purely in 165g tins which is currently on offer (five for £2) - this is a complete food, not too expensive, and is roughly one inch chunks of identifiable fish in jelly - to me it doesn't look or smell like cat food IYSWIM. They also have smaller tins and pouches in the range which are much more expensive and we haven't tried!

Hi Sarah

Re the raw food - there is a topic on catchat where the lady from the food company that is closing down (same one you tried?) has given them a list of distributors she would recommend.

http://www.catchat.org/discus/messages/92232/200112.html?1267210142

Hope this helps if the others you are trying don't come through for you and Cheeky.

Sarah

I have just remembered something else - don't know if this is an option but here goes.

My 1st cats James and Sebastian, when James died at 14, Sebastian just went on top of the wardrobe and would not eat. I took him to the vets who could find nothing wrong with him, other than he looked a very depressed cat and had lost a lot of weight. Cheeky's picture reminded me of the look that my Sebastian had - just so sad :(

Anyway the vet prescribed some tablets which had a side effect of creating a ravenous appetite (for allopechia, I think) and they got him eating again.

Maybe Cheeky could do with something to kick-start him again and then at your mums, he would start to feel a little better in a home environment.

Is it worth asking the vet whether there is something he could give Cheeky.

franta was injected with valium to get him to eat and he gobbled everything in sight but then was sick and it does not have a very nice effect.

i would just give him loads of attention and time and special treats if he will eay any.

i think the vets a last resort to stop them damaging their liver......well thats what my vet told me.

perhaps it's time to go for broke and take him to your mum's now - she might be able to persuade him to eat, simply by being close to him

I suppose there's no chance of getting hold of a couple of items of clothing or bedding from his former owner's place, which might retain her scent?

Post by: madkittyrescue on March 02, 2010, 09:38:01 AM
thanks guys!

Edd - sounds like it was possibly Ovarid that your vet prescribed.  TBH I really don't want to medicate him just now  he is on the rescue remedy and we are just giving him regular contact and hugs when he wants them - as he doesn't at times and can be quite grumpy.   :(

Ideally I need to sort out what he 'will' eat before I move him down to my mums or else I'm gong to be back and forward like a yo yo and I just don't have time for that with so many others to care for here at the moment so its a bit of a juggling act just now.

The food I ordered turned up this morning so will be trying him with some of that shortly to see how he does with that- hopefully he will take it and I can move him in the next day or two.  I'm very sure with Penny's company she will make sure he cheers up whether he likes it or not!   ;)

Will keep you all posted!  ;)

Hi guys,

Latest on cheeky is that he is feeling much better in himself and has begun to really cheer up and we even managed to get him interested in play which is great :)

On the food front his appetite is good but he just won't eat ANYTHING other than what he's used to.  Only exceptions are some sardines in tomato sauce and cooked chicken.  So alas after weeks of trying lots of different things including special diets, all natural, raw and mixes of different things I am admitting defeat and giving him what he WILL eat and just adding supplements.

After 10 - 11 yrs of eating what he has he is NOT going to change his ways - have tried the nicey nice approach and the eat it or starve, etc etc etc and got nowhere.

There is a first for everything and in this case I am admitting defeat - Cheeky Wins! :tired:

He is still with us just now as mum is getting heating installed but in light of the above we may just put him through a vet check and decide whether to put him forward for adoption.  That depends on the outcome of a checkup though.

Will report more soon.....

I'm really pleased to hear he's perking up a bit - and maybe some of that is down to him getting a little of what he wants - food-wise  ;) and who can blame him! bless  :Luv2: keep us updated it's nice to hear how he's getting on.

Am glad he is eating something, even if it isn't ideal!! Good luck with the vet visit, although I woudl still be tempted to take him to your mum's for a bit, even if he is still put up for adoption.

We ended up taking Cheeky with us to the vet last night as we were heading there anyway with a wee stray - report more shortly on another thread.

He wouldn't let us check him over for anything!  but was good as gold at the vet last night.  Surprisingly enough he got a clean bill of health other than his teeth which are terrible so he is now checked in for a dental this week - his lovely diet has destroyed his teeth!!

Will let you know how it goes will be getting done Thursday / Friday.

Thats progress though isnt it? and its added a little more variety to his diet. The sardines are pretty good nutritionally because they provide a fairly balanced ratio of meat and bone - as well as his Omega 3's and 6's  ;) and the cooked chicken with supplements is also better than his original diet. Glad to hear he's perked up a bit too, hope the vet can sort his teeth out

Good luck with your dental treatment tomorrow Wee man. I hope once it is all done your mouth will feel loads better and you suddenly realise good is what you need, not the old stuff you have been eating. Fingers crossed!

well after the not so good news about Cheeky going for a dental I now have some WONDERFUL!!!!  news  :) :)

We had a call today about a potential home that sounds just up Cheeky's Street and this was followed by a meeting tonight with a gent who has become - Cheeky's new Daddy!!!  yyaaayyy    :wow:

Wasn't that quick?? :wow:  Cheekie is still here just now obviously as he has to go for his dental tomorrow but all being well we hope to place Cheeky with his new dad sometime this weekend :)

What is SOOO wonderful about this is that he will be going back to what he came from.  A companion cat for an elderly gent who is looking for company and it was great to see Cheeky light up in his company.

To be honest we think Cheeky knew that he was meeting his new daddy as when his new dad took away his hand Cheeky put out his paw and grabbed his hand as if to say - don't leave me.  Bless him!

We are just over the moon with Cheeky and his new dad is utterly smitten - awkward eater or no awkward eater    :Luv2:

I can now report - rather amazingly that Cheeky boy has had a dental, scale and polish and not 1 .....yes not 1 .... of those lovely teeth needed to come out.  All he needed was a REALLY good clean and polish.

His new daddy is due to phone me tonight to find out how things went so all being well we should be able to place Cheeky into his new home very soon. :)  :)

Yay! This is such a great result.

Cheeky I hope you have a fabulously happy and long life with your new human slave.

It's a well know fact that people with pets live much longer than people without them, so I'm guessing these 2 will grow old together and spend many happy years being each others best buddies.

Huzzah for happy endings to rescues!

We are very sure that this is the perfect match for Cheeky and to be honest we haven't seen Cheeky light up like he did since his arrival.  Yes his new dad is older but to be honest we could rehome a cat to someone in their 50's and they could die next week so whilst it is a factor in our decision bearing in mind Cheeky's age and background we have no issues with homing him to an older gent.

That said - we always ensure that the family know that should anything happen to him that Cheeky must be returned to us but it is not something that is at the front of our mind in a decision such as this.  Cheeky deserves a good home where he can live out what time he has left in happiness and he obviously feels that this gent is for him.  To be honest the old man was smitten with Cheeky from the moment he met him and it was clear he was good for Cheeky too.  :Luv2:

Current plan will be to place Cheeky on Sunday all being well.  ;D ;)

Well I can report that Cheeky is now safely tucked up in his new home! :)

He did really well and had a wander round the room a couple of times had head bumps with his new dad and then decided to take up residence between an armchair and sideboard.  We put his blanket down for him and he promptly moved onto it, curled up and went to sleep! lol :)

His new dad is over the moon to have him and it was great to see him wandering around albeit he was having difficulty getting up onto furniture but we suspected his back end wasn't great - hopefully that will improve with time in his new home.

We left Cheeky sound asleep on his blanket and quite relaxed and will check in on him in a few days.  :Luv2:
