Found Jan 14th
Not chipped and no collar but very friendly, he wouldn't leave my front door
so I took him in and he climbed/staggered straight on to my bed and purred when I stroked him so must have been a much loved pet at some stage.
Some problems with his back legs so now at vets, update from vets today (saturday) is that he is getting stronger now with food and warmth, but an old cat and may have some neurological problem causing back leg weakness
Neutered, all black, vet estimates 11-14 years old
Now at RSPCA hospital in Putney, they will only keep for a week before PTS so I am desperate to find his owners
His ref number is pc58013

Looks like we have 2 offers of a temporary home to get this cat to safety. Thanks Emily.
Betty is talking with the lady, Nat, who originally found him - so perhaps she can speak with her about your offer.
Time is of the essence and I will be very relieved if this cat is fit to moved.

Think Christine Blip (Purrs) would be able to pick up if she took him as she is very near to Putney.
Any news of how he is doing now?

Not looking good for this boy. The RSPCA are refusing to release him as they don't feel it acceptable to rehome him. This is the statement from a lady who has tried offering to take him in:
the RSPCA will not rehome to me, I have offered but they say he is too old and might have health issues
The only way to get him is for his owner to come forward

Hi Just popped in from CatChat to update on this mornings news - which is not good at all.
The Animal Hospital will not rehome the cat to Nat (the girl who originally found the cat) and have him on a 7 day order to pts on Thursday.
The cat is eating well and can walk but shows weakness in the back legs which the Animal Hospital WILL NOT treat or investigate due to monetary issues!!.
Nat has spoken to them on numerous times and they will not budge saying "his dodgy back legs indicate he could be very unwell and not fair to rehome him". She feels she cannot do anymore.
The cat is due to be PTS on Thursday. Can anyone help.

god how awful - I can't believe they would turn down the offer of a home - so somebody would have to turn up and pretend to be the owner?? how would they proove it

Or if a rescue (or someone with a rescue backing) spoke to the animal hospital - they may consider releasing to them?

If the Canterbury CP gang - or another Purrs rescue team - would be able to help, and the RSPCA would sign over to them, I can collect this cat on their behalf.

Is this not worth getting the local press involved in. Surely it would not look good for the RSPCA refusing to let someone, who is fully aware of the situation of the cat, re-home him rather than pts.
It does seem disgusting to me that, in normal circumstances, the RSPCA would probably have told the woman who originally rescued the cat to "put him back where she found him", as this is their normal stance. This time, instead of letting her take him back to her own home, they are insisting he is PTS. I assume for them to pts him will cost more than letting the woman collect, so another waste of resources as well. :shocked:

Can't someone from another local rescue offer to take him in? I know he's going to cost while it's decided what's wrong with his legs - maybe we could all try and donate a couple of pounds towards him?

This is RSPCA at its most stupid and to save him action needs to be taken today.
I believe that RSPCA policy is to wait only 7 days for an owner because we have had a case on here before and the owner turned up to late and the cat had been rehomed, in that instance.
So they act a bit like a Autwitz, animals to the left for extermination and to the right for a home after 7 days. >:(

Just tried calling the clinic - I figure the more people that show an interest in this boy the better chance there is they'll try a little harder to help him. The lines were busy but have noted the number and his "reference number" (pc58013) to keep trying.

I would be more than happy to donate some money to his care or treatment to find out what is wrong with this cat - whether this is undertaken at the animal hospital or at a rescue's vets. I am sure others on Catchat and here on Purrs would too.
It appears the animal hospital has created a catch 22 situation for this poor cat:
- he is old and has weak back legs and a stray - so pts.
- unclaimed cat - old and not 100% fit - no point investigating or treating what is wrong with him - so pts
- original finder has offered to take him back - not rehomeable due to weak back legs - so pts
if a rescue could speak with the animal hospital and see what can be worked out to save him from being pts tomorrow. If this was someone's pet taken into the hospital, they would be treating him or at least running tests!!

I agree as it stands a rescue stepping in sounds the only option to me, or maybe if we offer to donate towards his treatment they will reprieve.

Sounds like he needs to get to a good vet and out from that animal hospital for a proper assessment. cos they are only in it for the money.
Any donations to help would need to go directly to the vet that had him but then of course the rescue or rescuer would have to stump up any remaining bill.
Christine has offered to pick him up and we need somewhere for him to go. I too would give a a bit to his vet bill.

If it can be achieved under the auspices of a rescue, I'm sure he could go to the cattery at my vets in the short term. But the RSPCA isn't going to sign him over to me as a private individual.

There were also 2 offers on Catchat.
- Nat (the girl who originally found him) would still take him back.
- Emily (a catchat member) member in surrey has a spare room and offered a couple of days ago.
I have taken cats (transport OAP's and their cats) to the hospital and they are very cheap compared to a private vet for people on benefits. But a bit like a 'NHS versus private' - long queues, waiting times, never see the same vet etc.
Hope we can sort something out for this old boy.

Right, so we need a rescue involved as they are turning down homes and rescue places are hard to get.....I cant believe they are turning down homes and know the excuse will be cos he may have an owner but they will not give the cat up until 7 days, once this has arrived they should allow a private individual to take...............it shouldnt matter the state of his health but sound slike they are not prepared to do a home check.......costs money you see. >:(

the obvious one is battersea but I'm sure I read somewhere they have a waiting list - Celia Hammond covers some parts of London

The nearest two are Battersea Cats and Dogs Home and The Mayhew. Neither would be likely to interfere with the RSPCA, I suspect. I don't know of any little independent ones.
CP has a branch in Paddington, if anyone has a contact there...

battersea are not like a rescue that we have on purrs and would not take him an d celia hammond is on the otherside of london , we really need a cp or a small rescue and needs to be west london....could try looking on cat chat bit reallt need someone we know

Asked Nat, if the RSPCA would be willing to transfer the cat to her vets in chiswick (who are willing to have him) but they said no!!
Some of the local rescues around the sw/w london or surrey, I have heard of are:
Animal rescue and Care (ARC)
Croydon animal samaritans (cover a wide area not just croydon)
CP - Ealing and West London
Animal lifeline (sutton)
CP Sutton and Cheam
Would not know if anyone from these are registered purrs members, although I vaguely remember seeing ARC as a User name?

Nat has been dealing with the Rehoming officer Mary Anne she thinks the name is .

I would contact the CP branches anyway and see - they will probably be full, but I know we have intervned before when there's been a threat of PTS. It might also be worth finding out who is the Regional Development Manager for London (the person who will oversee CP branchese in their area)
How does the RSPCA know if a rescue or individual is taking him? Do independant rescues have paperwork - ie could we botch some paperwork together for an individual to pick him up???

Think Nat (the lady who found the cat originally) from what I can gather, has been the only one to speak with the RSPCA and seems it may have been this same Rehoming Officer who has said NO to everything Nat has suggested.
As a member of the general public, she may have not used 'cat rescue jargon' and therefore hit a brick wall. e.g. board at her vets rather than transfer for private treatment.
So if anyone can get past this Homing Officer to somebody else in authority at the animal hospital, maybe the chief vet, something might be able to be sorted?

I've just checked on CC and Nat has posted the following:
Have just got through on emergency number
They are putting him to sleep tomorrow on advice of their vet they said.
No supervisors there or vets there till tomorrow so the end of the road for him.
......they have a ward of seven day cats they said
so sad :( I wonder whether he's a very poorly cat?

He is in my area and there is no point my trying to get him if the RSPCA will not release him even to the person who handed him in. It has to be a rescue that rings and then, even at this eleventh hour, I can go there tomorrow to collect him.

Yes Christine, that's what I meant by easier said than done and my earlier post I said that a rescue stepping in sounds the only option to me.

A rescue (National Animal Trust) has now spoken with the RSPCA - here is a copy of the post
"I've just spoken to someone at the RSPCA hospital and they seemed to know about him. I have said that we will help in whatever way we can either by covering the cost of tests/treatment or by taking responsibility of him to ensure a suitable home is found. However, they have told me that he has been examined by more than one vet at the hospital and they agree that he should be put to sleep purely for health reasons. He has tested positive for FeLV and FIV as well as the problem with his back legs. They are getting a supervisor to ring me at home tomorrow morning and I will check that the information I have been given tonight is correct but it does not sound hopeful I'm afraid.
I will update tomorrow.
It would be interesting though to know exactly what their policy is regarding all strays that are taken to the hospital when branches cannot take them in!"

'Hi Nat and everyone
I've just had a long chat with the nurse in charge of the stray ward at the Hospital and she is very keen to ensure that the correct information is known. I will only say what I have been told (and she was happy for me to put this post on) as I don't want to misinform anyone.
Firstly, the cat has not had a combo test so it is not known if he has FIV or FeLV. She apologised for this information being given to me last night and could only assume that whoever I spoke to had been looking at the wrong case notes. After a few days they thought he seemed to be walking a little better and were going to do blood tests but when he was reassessed it was decided his legs were no better so did not want to put him through needles being stuck in him. So his FIV/FeLV status has no bearing on the situation as they do not know what it is.
He is losing the function of his back legs due to muscle wasting. His pupils are fixed and dilated and there is bleeding at the back of the retina (I'm not sure if that is one or both). Although they think he can see shadows, his eyes are not responding to light stimulus so he is possibly blind/going blind.
She could not understand where the "7 day ward" has come from as they do not have one. She will be contacting Nat to discuss everything with the possibility that, following a successful home check, he can be released into her care.
I have offered again to cover the cost of any necessary tests/treatment if that is the only reason for him being put to sleep and have been assured that he will not be put to sleep purely due to financial reasons.
Hope this clears things up a bit and hopefully Nat will have a successful chat with them.

:) aww, I've kept checking on CC this morning then just popped off to do some jobs and came back to this news ;D just keeping fingers crossed all turns out well and will feel even better when the cat is actually released.

It's stories like this that never make it to the newspapers. They pull the breach of copyright stroke whenever someone wants to criticise. But I am not surprised at this case as they put every obsticle known to man in the way of an animal and his forever home. >:(
I am glad this case is sorted now and puss will have some peace in his final days/weeks/months or hopefully years. :naughty: :hug:

Ummm.. this runs a simiarl story with our Bing in care.. A x RSPCA cat of 15yrs rehomed by them.. When we found that out i rang them to see if they would take responsibility for him.. But he has suspected Hyper T.. Well .. they do not rehome Hyper T cats!
Umm so what do you think they do with them if tested as positive to this very treatable condition?
So Bing is still with us! and we will be getting h im fighting fit before rehoming..

wow this is great news and justin will have a happy end to his life, however long that maybe. sounds like he could have high blood pressure which can be he;ped by a quarter of a minute tab.

OMG what wonderful news ... only just caught up with this thread. It's funny how they have had a sudden change of heart and released Justin after allthe interest in him.

Nat is happy (from her posts) to give this cat any medical treatment he may need and so is her vet in Chiswick.
It would appear after all, that there were no other treatment other than a physical exam at the hospital, despite the different messages coming out during the last few days. No generic blood test or FIV/FeLV test undertaken.
Thanks again to everyone who supported/ advised and especially the rescue people and individuals who contacted the animal hospital - this forum and the catchat posts as well as those phone calls, I am sure saved this cat.
BUT I will be very pleased to hear when Justin has been collected from the hospital.

He's tested negative for FeLV and FIV and is being picked up 9am tomorrow:-)
They have also micro chipped him!!

Thanks all of you!
After the last 2 weeks I was half expecting him to be on deaths door but
he actually seems more chipper than before and his back legs don't appear
to bother him at all,( we will check this out anyway and see if it can be treated
or if hes just an older gentleman!) and very sweet if you sit near him on the
bed he comes to sit right next to you.
Scarily he saw a bird in the garden and looked keen to go out and stuck his face
against the glass door but he's indoor
for the next few weeks at least.

Justin looks and sounds like a real character... I'm so pleased that you found him and were happy to offer this "older chap" a loving home. It really doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened to him if you had just handed him and left him believing that the RSPCA would look after him and try to find his owners. I hate to think about how many other people have done that and not realised they had actually put a kitty on "death row" :'(
