Title: Christmas tragedy - Now Homed!
Post by: Pinkbear (Julie) on December 24, 2009, 11:48:30 AM
Even though it's not my official day for phone duties, I thought I'd ring in to check seeing as Thursday's person is a young chap who may be suffering a bit of a headache and forgot...  :evillaugh:

Good job I did as I found an urgent plea for help from Dover branch's welfare lady. They are packed to the gunnels, cats stuffed in every room in the welfare officer's house.  They have had two 8 month old kittens dumped on them suddenly this morning by social services. (CP being the only organisation locally who doesn't pull the plug on the phone Christmas week  :) ) All catteries are full with Christmas bookings, vets closed for the holidays and no other rescues are answering the phone.  :tired:

The kittens' owner was a young man (single parent) who died very suddenly overnight.  :( His young daughter will spend Christmas in the care of social services.  :'( She says the kittens are distressed at the sudden upheaval but looking healthy. But there's not even a cupboard in Dover left to stuff them in and they are sitting hunched in carriers.  :(

Luckily our welfare officer is a smart lady and held back her pen as she just KNEW this kind of event was going to happen.... so kitties will be spending Christmas with us in Canterbury in a nice heated pen.  :)

Thats terrible! Poor daughter what a terrible shock! Julie is dead right though.. We have somewhat benefited in rehoming our cats while others are now closed down for everything. Not even answering the phone.. But we do get cases like this.. Dover are in a bit of a state, even i am unable to get hold of anyone from their branch, so they must of ceased rehoming a while back. The last i heard they had ferals in care, 2 diabetic cats (yes 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and 4 poorly kittens with a virus...that is still being vet treated so are unable to move anything...!or rehome anything.

IPersonally i think that NCC HQ should of stepped in as being a fairly new branch is a bit much to expect them to deal with all this. Even we would struggle with such cats... And we have more pens and a few more fosterers they have just a few..

Still.. its good that we can help.. Lets hope there are no others.!
I will spare a thought for the young girl though this Christmas

Poor little girl.  :'(

Didn't we have a similar situation recently? -
The children were upset about having to lose the cats as well as their mum dying  :(

I didn't catch all the information but I think the Dover lady said the girl was 5 years old. I tend to not focus too heavily on the human side as I can't do anything to help there... I can't even bare to think about it to be honest.  :'( I am sure wherever she is (probably with foster parents I would think?) that whoever is caring for her will watch over her like a hawk and try everything to make it a little less painful.  :'( Hopefully she has family of some sort somewhere and Social Services will be able to make contact with them sharpish.  :wish:

The Dover lady says she's willing to take the kittens back in a few days when she's had a chance to do yet another shuffle around, but they are under so much pressure there..  I think we may be offering to keep them in our branch for rehoming in the New Year.  ;) They are both female, unneutered and one is a pedigree cross she said... think we may be about to stop a bit of a kitten factory?  :shify:

Both of these young cats are in our care now.. Both have a few health issues and will need to see a vet as soon as we can after the holiday.

What a sad situation, i am glad you were able to help - and unfortunately not all CP branches answer the phone during Christmas. Fingers crossed their health issues aren't too serious and they can both find good homes soon.

:'(  What a dreadfully sad story.

Im so glad you were able to help the cats

But I cant help thinking about that poor little girl - I hope someone tells her that her cats are Ok and safe in a new home - people dont always think to tell children things and they often understand more than we think ....  :(

I just heard on the grapevine that the people (previously home checked) have viewed puds and fallen in love.  :naughty: Puds need some surgery this week so won't go to their new home until the weekend... but well done to Sharon who has been cleaning up on the rehoming stakes over the holiday periods.  :naughty:  A pity the other rescues local to us close down and hibernate for a month as we have picked off all the excellent homes that they weren't answering the phone to.  :evillaugh:

Glad to hear this, and I am surprised you do still answer the phone, very few rescues do, although I noticed we were still answering the phone when I was there on Wed, although we do still have another two weeks before homing starts.
