Title: Hi, I'm New
Post by: Sylvia on March 04, 2007, 22:55:34 PM
Hi,

I'm Sylvia, and I have 5 kitties.  They are Gizmo, Thomas, Sweep, Suki and Tatty.  As soon as I find out how, I will post some pictures.  Gizmo is a fluffy grey girl, Thomas is a short-haired ginger boy, Sweep is a short-haired black boy, Suki is a fluffy black girl, and Tatty is a fluffy black and white boy.

Thomas was diagnosed with diabetes in June last year, and we seem to have got this controlled fairly well now.  I found you from the FIV page on CatChat, as Tatty tested positive for this in December last year, and I was hoping to hear from some other owners of FIV kitties out there, as we feel like we have been on a bit of a rollercoaster since we heard about this.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Sylvia

Trying to load photos of my babies, so here goes:

This is Gizzy (Gizmo).  She moved in with us on Christmas Day 1994, and she will be 14 this year.

This is Sweepy (Sweep).  He joined us in 1997, and will be 10 this year.  He came to us from Cats Protection, after he had been left in a cardboard box in the car park of PAH.

This is Suki.  She joined us in January last year from the Chestnut Cat Sanctuary, after she had been abandoned by her previous owners.

This is Tatty.  He had been visiting us since the beginning of last year, but running away any time we got too close to him.  He appeared to be a stray, and at the beginning of December, we managed to get him to our vet who told us that he was an unneutered boy, not microchipped,, and that he looked like he had flu.  We put notices up in all the vets in our town, and in the local shop, and contacted the local branch of Cats Protection to see if anyone had reported him missing, and after 3 months of him being with us, still no-one has contacted us.  Cats Protection very kindly offered to pay for Tatty to be neutered, and it was when he went to their vets for this that he was tested for FIV, and the result of this was positive.  He has since been back to our vets, and is a lot calmer than he was in the early days, and they have estimated that he is between 4 and 9 years of age.

Was his FIV test done in house or sent off?

Sam,

Thanks, I have had a look at the FIV section, and it seems to be very helpful.

Desley,

Tatty's test was done in house by the CP vet.  I have had the tests sent off to Glasgow for Sweepy, Suki and Tommy and these have come back negative, and Gizzy is due to have the same test done later this month.  I asked my own vet if I should get the Glasgow test done for Tatty, but he said that the symptoms that he was showing (i.e. flu) indicated that his immune system was already compromised, and that he believes that he is FIV+.  Do you think I should go back to my vet and ask him about the Glasgow test again?

Sylvia

I personally would, just because he was living as a stray, so his flu symptoms could be related to that. There is a 7% chance of an in house test being wrong.

I second that.  Really beautiful photos of georgeous cats.  As my cats are indoor/outdoor, I would always opt for the Glasgow test if inhouse FIV test proved pos as I wouldn't want to alter their outdoor access unless it was really necessary.  I love the name Tatty btw. He's a stunner!

Many thanks for the comments about the photographs.  Photography is just a hobby.  In the early days, you wouldn't believe how many photographs I have of grey cats that were supposed to be black or black and white:rofl:.

Helen,

It is thanks to you that I was able to load my photos, because I read your instructions to Swampmaxmum, to find out what I needed to do.  Thank you so much :thanks:.
