Title: Transport needed for lurcher cross Nottingham to Cumbria SORTED
Post by: JackSpratt on April 15, 2009, 10:32:20 AM
Any time after the 21st. I'm aware this is a trek, so a chain will probably work better! The dog is currently in the Urgent section (will put a link up later) and after confirming this is acceptable to his current owner I think it's best to put the wheels in motion. (That sounds like a bad joke in the transport section!)

After 21st we could take him Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday, Barnsley to Kendal area other than that Sunday but wouldn't be full distance to Cumbria then.

I dont know if I can help at all but I am driving from Leicester to Carnforth (Lancs) on Saturday (18th) and could take him to Cumbria. However, must note I only have small car (Nissan Micra) and it doesn't have dog screen. Depends how well he travels and how safe it would be. Anyway, pm me if I can be off help.

JS if someone can just do that first leg from Nottingham to Woolley Edge Services we'll do the rest right up to Cumbria.  Where in Cumbria is it?

Woowoo? Can you PM Janey and tell her where you are in Cumbria? :) Will try and hunt down someone to do the first leg. Will also pass on current owners phone number to Woowoo, and phone the owner tonight regarding the plan.

Ok will do. I think he will benefit from being with my girl, we might be able to sort his Seperation Anxiety in time. I've told Fred he's coming

Blimey, organising this first bit's proving to be difficult. It's odd because I think how far you're going to drive Janey and it seems mad that noone on the other sites is prepared to do what is essentially a run that will take roughly 2 hours out of  their day.

I would have offered to do the run to Wolley edge as i know it well but unfortunatelt  1. im at work in the week so only available at weekends and 2 my car is not very reliable at the moment plus ive developed an oil leak somewhere,if i had other transport i would willingly have helped out

I've been trying to find someone all afternooon, we do still need that section doing don't we J.S? Would be wonderful if we could get him sorted thank you for your offer.
Have spoken to Cain's owner and she thought we had forgotten, he is still with her though - thankfully!

Post by: JackSpratt on April 24, 2009, 21:11:48 PM
Karen, you'd do that? You and Janey are wonderful! :)

I think all that needs to be done is for numbers to be exchanged between everyone doing the run and Woowoo. So, if Karen can get in touch with Cains owner (WooWoo, you need to PM the number!) and organise collecting him, then Janey needs Karens number and WooWoo needs Janeys.....I think that's right!

I'm so pleased that she didn't let him go to just anyone. I mislaid the number (it was on a post it that disappeared from the PC!) and didn't want to bother her until I knew someone could help for definite.

Title: Re: Transport needed for lurcher cross Nottingham to Cumbria
Post by: woowoo on May 04, 2009, 20:42:20 PM
Well I'll start again! >:(

It's been eventful!

He lay in the back of the car and rested his head on my knee and kept getting up and kissing Dave! Found a littlle friend on him and sent that packing out of the car window at 70mph  So he had a bath and has been Frontlined too! Yes He does have a lot of hair! I was covered and the bath was full :evillaugh:

He seems to like cheese and certainly liked my cheese sandwich. He also managed to pinch a loaf of bread off the worktop! I rescued it though!

The cats have all met him and he got a bloody nose from Molly. Trevor headbutted him, Keidis hid under the table, Basil got a paw on the top of his head and Fred just gazed at him!!

He's eating well and has just done his first poo (had to share that!!).

There was alot of barking when he got out of the car and met the other dogs, but after a quick sniff  he was fine. I was towed off up the road, he is so strong, so off to PAH I went. Bought him a Halti harness and he walked beautifully in it.

He has got a proper husky tail and his ears are furry like a huskys too, but they fold back like a Lurchers! The rest of him is pure Lurcher. :Luv2:

So apart from a few run ins with the cats and a growl at Penny the Beagle over a bone he has been fine. :evillaugh:

How is Cain doing Woowoo?
Title: Re: Transport needed for lurcher cross Nottingham to Cumbria
Post by: woowoo on May 06, 2009, 20:03:54 PM
Well he seems to like it here!  ;) He's flaked out on the rug in front of the fire.  :Luv2:

From his behaviour we don't think he's had much socialising, walking on a lead or playtime. Today he's been throwing the chicken and dinosaur around the sitting room. That is the first time he has played.

He can open doors, he pushes the handle down and then grasps it between his paws and pulls it towards him.

At night he is sleeping under our bed then he goes and gets in his bed. If Snookie barks at him he goes under there too!!!

The cats are getting a bit more used to him. Fred was playing with his tail earlier!

I can't seem to upload any photos yet as they need resizing and I have no idea how to do this. I'll get some more later and hope they are small enough. I know I'm useless!

Costing me a fortune with all the new toys and treats! Thinking about buying a van specially to transport him in comfort!   Oh and also a camper van for our hols, no I haven't won the lottery! Ordered a DAP plug in today to help him settle when we leave him. Left him for a few mins to go to Windermere and he was kept occupied with his Kong. :Luv:

Had a bit of a setback last night :( Finley bit Fred(cat), he got a bit posessive over a toy and just grabbed him. So we put him in his crate. Fortunately Fred was ok, he just got fur. Fred is naturally wary of him now, but bless him still walked up to Finley as if to apologise! He then bit Snookie's leg as she went over to her Dad for a love, she bit him on the bum, he squeaked. I think he is really trying to make himself the 'Boss'. We are still trying. I'm going to have achat to one of the dog trainers in our area and see what they advise. Feel a bit low about it to be honest. I do wonder if there were other issues with him.
He certainly hasn't been walked much and how a child could walk him to the park to play football is beyond me!

Post by: JackSpratt on May 09, 2009, 19:50:45 PM
Did she say that was the case? That Cain/Finley was walked by a child?

Sorry to hear that he's being a bossy so and so. Hope the dog trainers can give you some good tips and keep us updated.

Post by: woowoo on May 09, 2009, 22:13:03 PM
Yes she said her son had taken him to the park and played football with him!
He has been quite good tonight though, we are trying to keep him at the bottom of the pecking order ;) i.e no getting on the settee and he is last to get a biscuit. He has been really good in his crate today, settled down and went to sleep. We won't give up easily on him :Luv2:

I know you won't. He really does look a lovely dog - my partner was told more than once that if our cats had any tolerance whatsoever for dogs, I'd have been wanting to take him on. (I actually said I'd got new pictures of "my lurcher" earlier - a slip my partner now won't let me forget! :shy:)

It does sound like he's seeing what he can get away with, rules and discipline so he knows what's allowed will hopefully do the trick, he's adapting to a totally different environment - he probably hasn't been given a consistent regime until now poor lad.  I hope he settles in soon, keep us updated.

I'm afraid i don't go for the whole "pack leader" school of thought. :shy: Sounds to me like guarding behaviour, really common but can be difficult to train out. I've been in touch with a very highly regarded APDT dog trainer (who agrees with me re: pack leader stuff ;)) about my dogs guarding issues, and he's recommended clicker training, and using a click/reward every time he is nice to my other dog/doesn't guard. Tis as with everything, slow progress, :innocent: but we muddle along. I also have to make sure my dog doesn't have toys/treats around all the time to guard cos if they're there he's a nightmare, if they're not, he doesn't miss them.

If you have a look on the APDT or APBC sites you should be able to find someone really good locally. :)

I think the two are related though Beth, it sounds like Finley is unsure yet about things and as there are other pets around he's making sure he's not missing out on the attention and it's a case of what's mine mine and what's yours is mine.  I think a consistent routine and praise for good behavour should work well  :)

I started with the clicker training, I trained a very aggressive German Shepherd with a clicker so I know that it works.  I also make sure he is fed in his crate and no treats are left around, so there is no chance of him nipping anyone. He is now going into his crate of his own accord to have a sleep.  :Luv2:
He has bonded very quickly with my husband and he poses no threat to me, but I'm afraid he really does need to know that he can't boss any of the other animals around. He's only young and it is like starting all over again and having to, in theory retrain him. I will have a look on the site for APDT. Thanks Beth.
I can tell from his behaviour that he has only been taught the basics. Softly softly catch yer monkey

Poor lad. I think it's really sad when people get a dog and then don't give it any structure. (My cousin is guilty of this - her and her partner "rescued" a staffy but she's received no training and as a result is really boisterous to the point where she runs at people and knocks them over.)

Brilliant that he knows the rules you've been trying to establish already. :)

How has Finley been Woowoo?

We have just been for a walk round the river and the clicker training is going really well. He hardly pulled at all. We also saw a small dog and I managed to make him sit and distract him and he never barked! Ge had a little snap at Snookie today but he has been a lot better.
He played and played out in the back today. We've left him for the last 2 days for a couple of hours and he has been fine in his crate.
still waiting for the behaviourist to ring back!

That's sounding more positive it may just take a while for him to settle in hopefully as time goes on and he feels more secure things should improve.  He sounds happy, keep us updated  :)

Bless the poor lad - sounds like a serious lack of routine before he came to live with you, Woowoo. Sending Finley huge fusses!

We've had a really good day with Finley today :wow: We walked him for a couple of miles this afternoon, through the fields and down through the woods.
We saw sheep, which he would've liked to of chased, cows which he sniffed and two ponies which he ignored! Walked him past three dogs and he had a bark at one and walked past the other two with minimum of fuss. He has started to get the hang of the sit command and towards the end of the walk he started to sit after the first 'SIT'. He walked perfectly to heel until he saw the sheep, then he pulled.  :evillaugh:
None of the cats have been chased today and we have had no snapping at Snookie, although we are still being very careful around food. He has also been a lot calmer in the house on a whole. Could it be the DAP plug in ???
So gold star for the boy today. He's passed out- Knackered ;)

We've just been to the park and let Finley off for the first time. We have been practicing his recall - doggy boot camp here  Anyhow he ran and ran and ran. Then the 'boys' Misty and Trey two Whippets came on the field and he just played with them for ages. He's now knackered! He's doing really well. Got his girlfriend Charlie here at moment. :Luv2:

The boy has had a wail of a time this afternoon/evening. He traveled quite well on the way up, he was only sick once  !
He soon settled though. Took him for a walk in Dalbeattie forest with Molly and Snookie, then we met the outlaws for some tea.
Then off to the beach where Finley just ran and ran and played :Luv2: He slept all the way home!!!
Oh and he did 2 wees and a poo on his walks! He has never done a poo and only ever done 2 wees out of our garden since we got him ;) Bless!
