Title: Boosters - is this true?
Post by: carl (billy and baggys dad) on November 20, 2006, 11:17:54 AM
I telephoned our vet the other day to sort out taking Billy and Baggy for their boosters, due next week. The nurse I spoke to said it's better to take them slightly later than the due date rather than earlier, and said it is possible to leave it up to six months

Is this true? Obviously I'm taking the boys next week as I planned, but I was just curious about the six month business.

I understand the cat flu needs to be done every year but the enteritis may last a bit longer, although it could be the other way round.

6 months sounds a long time.? I know there is a school of thought that they last a lot longer than a year (up to 3 years) but most vets still recommend annual boosters and you aren't usually allowed to be more than a couple of months late with them before you have to start again.? I would think it would be ok for the cat's health, but I'm not sure how a cattery would view boosters 18 months apart.? I always leave mine about a month after the due date but that's because I'm tight and reckon that over their lifetime it will cost me less!

i would agree with the first VN in this posting !!

of course most vets arent going to say that as they have to wait longer for your money but we always used to have around that leeway,

someone posted on CC before about new info saying that boosters every 2 years is enough altho there are separate implications of that ie animals missing health checks, not getting into catterays etc.

Thanks very much everyone. It's allayed my fears a bit - I was concerned that if they were giving out duff information, how reliable are they?

It sounds like she's not far wrong though.

Thanks again  ;D

When I asked at my vets they said the flu virus has to be done within 1 month of due date or you would have to start again I belive she said the other had 3 months leeway

I usually get my cats boosters done a month or so before their due date.

Vaccines dont just run out at a year!

I never do mine on time - i always go at least 14/15 or even 16mths months in between.

One vet told me 18 months, and after this date you would need the full vacs again as a booster wouldn't be enough. I read the same in a Cat World magazine - there was an article on it.

Taken from FAB SITE

With most vaccines, the protection they provide against infection is not lifelong and therefore further ?booster' injections are usually required to maintain good protection. Cats should receive their first booster injection a year after the kitten vaccines are given. Subsequent annual booster injections are usually advised for at least some diseases and currently most manufacturers can only prove that their vaccines are effective for a year. However, some vaccines appear to induce protection that lasts much longer than a year. Some vets therefore advise less frequent booster vaccinations, often every three years subsequently, at least for panleucopenia virus and the cat ?flu viruses (unless there is a particular risk of infection). Talk to your vet about what is best for your cat in your area.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT CATTERIES INSIST ON YEARLY BOOSTERS.

I'm glad I read this as my Chips has just had his booster and he was a month late (due to the vets not sending out a reminder). I was panicking a bit
The vet gave him 2 jabs today, I'm sure it's always been just the one.
Well, the big wussy, who's 5.75kg by the way, showed me up rotten. He wouldn't come out of the basket. We had to up-end it and shake him out he was that scared. Oh the shame of it..... :-[

Sid won't come out either. Even with a good shaking. Had to take the top off and he stayed in his box for his shaving and lancing.

What do other people think about this? He had a lump on his back. I took him to the vet, sahe shaved the area, lanced it with a needle then informed me it was caused by his innoculation jab a couple of weeks ago. That cost me about £30. Now as the lump was caused by the previous injection is it reasonable that I am paying for that?
