Title: Cats had been fed & sheltered, but now left by my work, NOW URGENT. HAVE UPDATE
Post by: **TINA** on February 03, 2009, 21:46:32 PM
Hi,  i have just started a new job on monday, the bloke that had the unit a few along had been feeding & sheltering 3 or 4 cats.
I got told there are a lot of ferals hanging around the estate, but the ones i am on about (seen 3 today, bless them) have now been left to fend for themselves.
The bloke had fed & sheltered them over the years, so they have become a lot more dependant on the human feeding them & keeping them warm.

As far as i have been told the have been neutered by CP previously, and now a lady who is involved with CP will come n put food opposite for them.

Where i work (animal lover & own cats) can't do anything for shelter in our unit, as we work upstairs, but have a seperate business (a diner) downstairs,
and against health & safety.

One of the cats this man as  feeding & giving shelter  got killed on the road next to the unit, as they just wander about, when other feral's on the estate stay away till its quiet at night.

As you can imagine, i found it upsetting to see them hanging about the unit door, when its all shut up  :'(
Especially when we had snow n sleet yestetday, heavy rain last nite & its frezing cold again tonight.

Can anything be done to help these few?  :(
I am going to take them food tomorrow & see how close i can get to them.

Are the CP branch aware of the situation? They should make these cats top priority - especially in this weather. Maybe they have emergency fosterers? - whereabouts are you?

They need to go to a farm with a nice warm barn.

Poor little things  :'(

Is there anyway you can provide a temporary shelter... even something as simple as a dustbin on it's side with some old towels in is better then nothing poor babies.

Yes a dustbins a good idea -you can always tell the council someone has taken it /moved it and you can''t find it  ;) Some bits of fleece and cat biscuits/food at the end should tempt them in .

When i heard that CP lady was involved, i assumed they would have done something to trap them.

If stuff is left outside it will prob be removed by the council.

Whats worrying is that a lot of trucks/vans/wagons are pullin up for the diner, aswell as cars.
And the story i got, was the cat that got killed was accidentally headed for on the road  :censored: >:( so there are cruel people around the area.

The girl i work with,  it was her that ran up to the agents locking up the unit & barged in, shouting at them to chase cats out,  She couldnt do anything else
or they would have been locked in for good.

The industrial estate is NE13 (newcatle upon tyne)

I was upset driving home, knowing they were sittin outside and one was by my car & i couldnt do anything about it  :'(
I come home & cuddled my babies, but ive been thinking of them all night.

How many are there approximately....do you know Tina?

If the Cats Protection have neutered them in the past and someone was feeding them, they were probably considered safe and adequately provided for to leave where they were (I know it's not perfect but there are so many little babes needing care and attention and ferals are often quite hard to rehabilitate).  However, if the person who was caring for them has now gone then the situation has changed and these cats' plight should be notified to the Cats Protection.

I would so like to buy those little KatKabins for ferals living rough.  They are about £50 each but they would keep them warm and dry during the bad weather.  I would be willing to donate a couple at least.  Would anyone else be interested?  (for any strays...anywhere)

These are what I mean.

http://www.brinsea.co.uk/categories/katkabin/136/1

Inform your local CP branch asap.  They may be able to send someone to help.

Good luck!

Best wishes,

Roz

those large garden storage units with an opening cut out would be better value, I think - I have a plastic coal bunker with a lid and opening which would house at least 10 cats - there must be unwanted items like this around

They sound great -put a catflap in and loads of vet bedding with fleece on top -wish i lived nearer -would go and do it !

Roz- i know the ones you mean -been thinking of getting one of those for Winston when he sits out the front ( only when i am at home and he wants to sit outside the front door but not come inside - he has to be in at 7pm ! so likes to sit out for a bit ) I have 2 cat houses at the front already -but other cats have been sleeping in them -think its when they are left out all day or night and its so cosy inside them .
I have vet bedding inside ,one of those reflective metallic heat pads and then fleece on top .
He doesn''t really need one that badly as i look out the window every few mins to see if he want to come in -but i like them

Poor things, I have a love of ferals and look after a group myself if I were you I would contact CP and try and get them sorted temporary until they can be trapped and placed somewhere safe from roads and where they will get some permanent care.

It is true the CP lady goes to feed them. I am trying to catch her on a morning so i can ask her why they aint been trapped & put somewhere safe.
Could be that they dont have the room ?
I was past myself today, as an artic was parking up in the corner & the black n white one just sat & watched, didnt budge till last minute.

They dont seem the flighty feral pack, as they like my car. I have a pretty pattern all over it off muddy little paws.

They have a shelter CP put it there,  I took pic to show you, the bit sticking out is where some food bowls are.
I didnt get to close as  Princess & Hoff were inside.

Good luck with the CP - we always try and put cats who have no shelter at the top of our list, but unfortuntely even semi ferals we often can't take in immediately. When one of our feral colonies has a change in circumstance (feeder goes away, dies, leaves) we always try and move them asap, but finding another site can be a nightmare and taking them in has all the issues that any cat has in the fact that we have no room!!!!

I would probably think that the branch are trying their very best to at least make sure that the cats are fed and sheltered in some form until they can move them on bring them into care.

It's not ideal by any means, but it's something.

I really hope it can get sorted soon xxx

Farm type homes are few & far between and there is no way ferals can be looked after by normal indoor fosterers. I hope something can be sorted for them  :Luv2:

I took them treats this morning, they seem to be gettin used to me already.

Got pretty close to them. (they love my car on a morning) i just let they lie on the bonnet so they can get a warm.
Then this afternoon, 2 of them were sat on the car roof & 2 on the bonnet & one sittin on the back hatch, bless them, they are gorgeous.

Porridge returned today aswell  (white with black patches & dark tail) Didnt have phone on me to show you Porridge.

Just sorting a few pics off my phone now to show you   :Luv:

Oh, poor little poppets. They're good photos Tina.  There does appear to be quite a few of them.  I wonder what we can do to make them more safe.  Any ideas anyone.  I'm willing to make a contribution.

Good to know you're there for them Tina.

Best wishes,

Bless them and you for caring.  Some cats have hard lives don't they?  I hope they can at least all snuggle together in temporary shelter to keep warm and at least their little tummies are being kept full.  I do hope you can get them sorted soon, it's so cold and hostile outside.  Wish I could help you

This little pack are so diferent to the others on the trading estate.  (the others hide away from human contact)
These babies have become dependant on being fed, what i have seen so far in they way they sit in the way of on coming traffic, i fear the worst.
As the baby who was killed was headed for deliberate.

There are some heartless people, a man went in to the diner today whilst i was out talking to the cats, he was wearing a "real fur hat" he took it of
& said they wont be there long (meaning the cats) then he laughed & said only kiddin this is wolf fur (waving his hat)
I felt sick & wanted to kick him in the  :censored: nards.

I hope that nobody thinks I am not normal as I have some doozy ferals who now live on the inside and are very well trained and somehow more rewarding than the normal cats - each step they take forward seems to be a mountain climed and in fact Blue who has been on the inside since last September with us after major surgery and a soft touch in my husband he is still on the inside and whilst still a bit hissy loves cat milk - so readily available in the wild and now doesn't hiss when he gets his breakfast saucer in the morning - can't touch him but we have plenty others who love us! :Luv2:

We have all sorts of ferals - nice, nasty, really nasty and Ace who comes at you if he is spooked but he loves the other cats and the dogs before the humans but he is safe here and thank god he likes treats so can be wormed and we also Profender but the vet has yet to see him!

We get alot of ferals where we are - nearly all caught fingers crossed, but another always turns up from somewhere.  If I see one I trap it and get it to the vets and sorted (arranged with vet/CP) then released back here, myself and 2 other neighbours care for them they go from house to house are well fed and we have kennels.  They do I believe also sleep in huts behind my house in the allotments too and will go in next doors conservatory with her ex-feral.  I would say over time they do get tamer eg today Zippy came just inside the doors for food and I just managed to stroke her head yesterday.

I am the same  :(   i finish work at 4pm tomorrow,  i dont work weekends but i am still going to take them some food & check they are ok.

The road is just at the end to where that range rover is parked on the pic, and cars fly around there.

I wish someone could put a plea out, to try & get them moved to a farm. There has to be some farm in northumberland  :wish: :wish: :wish:

Would you consider asking any of the guys on the Trading Estate if they would be willing to help you to do something for them?  You never know some might just come forward with some helpful suggestions/ideas/cash even. I'm sure you will get all the usual callous remarks like the one you heard today from 'wolf hat' but there are many animal lovers in the world who probably feel as bad as you do about the cats but just haven't had the impetus to get them motivated.  You might just be that impetus.

Men will very often go that extra mile for a pretty face! :)

It is very upsetting to see that, I wish something could be sorted for them soon poor things.  If CP are feeding them can't they put a plea out on their website for homes for some ferals, have you asked? that is what most do I think, they can't be left there like that.  (That bloke was just ignorant )  If I lived near I would come and help you.

I would phone head office and explain the situation. Like any walk of life, there are a few hitlers running branches and they may need a kick up the  :bum: to do something. Remind them that they are there to protect cats! - I am a CP volunteer and I know our branch would have done something. Julie (Pinkbear) is our feral person and she spent months sorting out feral populations.

Have got one trap to use, but cant trap them untill have somewhere to take them.

Think Porridge may be the hard one to trap, as the others wont allow him to eat close to them.
He looks the oldest, bless him.

CP can only help if they have a barn ready and waiting for them, in short supply in some areas  :( its not safe to keep them in a pen for a few months until something turns up.
Even tho they come for food they wont neccessarily turn into house pets, not many poeple have the facilities such as liz to allow them to get on with it within a home environment and give them the time sadly  :(
The colony i sorted out come very close for food and appear when called but it would be a hell of a task to domesticate them :scared: i hope the Thames contact works out :luck:

Wish i could take them in, if i still lived in the country i would of.
Because we had a cat flap on the shed & a couple of cats visited us for food, water,  milk & warm comphy bed, especially in winter  :Luv:

I am on the hunt for a farm house/cottage to rent, have put adverts on the net etc & always looking.
A house will turn up  :wish:   then i will be able to help in cases like this, as i feel helpless, but living here i wont let my babies out.

These poor little cats, I keep thinking about them as I am sure does everyone on Purrs.  I so hope something can be sorted for them and soon.  There must be someone out there who could offer them shelter and who maybe isn't on Purrs, but how to find them other than everyone asking around.  I don't know anyone who has suitable facilities but will keep thinking.  Hope they feel cosy in their shelter bless

I don't know if there are any rescues with feral enclosures - although even this isn't ideal at least they are safe. Rhdes Minnis cat sanctuary which is down my way in Kent has a huge feral enclosure which is like a giant Tennis court but with all kinds of shelters, beds etc. I don't know if there is anything like it in the NE.

Our local free rag ran an article this week on 100 ferals that are being sought farm homes for....Apparently, they were living on a farm and the farmer would feed them but what started out as under five ferals three years ago has now increased to 100 and he can no longer look after them all, although he does admit that he has absolutely no vermin problems on his farm.  But wouldn't you have thought he would have anticipated this and had them neutered?

The local C.P. and other shelters now have to try to find homes for 100 ! Some of them can obviously be handled because there are pictures of them being held by the carers.  It's so sad...I just hope approprate farm/barn/stable homes can be found for them all.  They have been neutered and de-flead and vet checked now...poor little babes.

You know forest land is not expensive to buy and I just wondered if you would be allowed to re-home some ferals to this type of environment....or would they upset the balance of nature within the woodland?  It's a very difficult problem.  I guess some agricultural land would suffice....and that is not expensive either.  You would probably have to obtain permission for putting little shelters on it but they wouldn't be permanent...not sure about lack of water etc but nevertheless it is a thought.

The attached photo shows what time can do with ferals - these 3 spent 3 weeks in CP Fosterers pen getting wormed, frontlined and litter trained, thansk to their former feeder who visited them 4 times a day and spent time with them they then came to us and spent 3 weeks in our downstairs study and now do as they please on the inside

This lot are aged 14.5 years - stripey one and her 2 kids are 8.5 years old - if you have one spare room and a lot of time they will adapt - This lot haven't looked to go out since they moved 150 miles to become Clan cats and seeing them looking knowingly through the windows at the snow makes it all worth while - Cissy is off to the vet this month for her Chip and boosters and is a lovely older lady, the longhaired ragamuffin is a Daddy's girl and Smudger the boy loves his food but is still a bit skittish so he will be off to the vet when he is ready!

Liz your "ferals" always make me smile.  It's lovely to see what a bit of TLC, food and a radiator bed can do to turn a scaredy cat into a proper "home lover"  :Luv2:

They are lucky to have you and Robin

Just to add before I was made redundant we both worked full time and had 38 cats before the new lots and 2 dogs now 3 and we cope with this lot - most ferals are usually food orientated and this makes it easier we also have domestics for most of the age groups and find it helps to let them mix after a quarrentime period

Of course some of our ferals prefer the dogs to humans!

Whilst I was googling for info, I came across Newcastle council website - Newcastle in Staffs, not on Tyne - They have a page about pest control and they include feral cats as Pests to be controlled  >:(
http://www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/environment_index.asp?id=SXA395-A780BA03&cat=1408

I'm wondering if I should contact CP about this - it is disgusting  >:(

More council morons  >:(

I lived in Stoke for 5 yrs, been back up north for nearly 3 now.

I know of Iris's Cats, as caught ferals & their baby kitties & Iris took them in. She looked after them, neutered the adults & re-homed them & their babies
when they were confident to be handled etc. She is a lovely lady, she had her garage all done out for the cats she took in.
Also she had a double glazed cattery made in her back garden.
Everytime i visited her she had a big crate in her sittin room either with tiny babies that had been dumped or a cat that was ill & needed constant attention,
& medication.

I am gonna contact here about these ones at my work, as no luck with anyone/anwhere up north yet.
I can do the transport to stoke at weekends, Mick is happy to help aswell (also visit my other half's family, so 2 birds with one stone)

Hi Guys

Sorry Tina I've not been on the pc for a few days so hadn't seen this or read your PM. Not sure of we can do anything immediately as feral homes are in short supply up here and we don't really have anywhere we can put ferals temporarily but can you PM me the exact location where they are and also let me know which CP branch you contacted. I will ask our welfare bods if they have any suggestions, one of our ladies does lots of feral work so she may have some ideas.

Still not found them anywhere to go.

We had snow the other day, and feeding time on Friday i only seen 4 of these babies.
Rosie, Princes, Dolly & one of the tabby boys sit outside their known unit by the shutters. It kills me to have to drive away seein them sitting waiting  :'(

There has also been a big dog sniffing around their shelter, could tell by the size of the paw marks in the snow and big men foot prints  :censored:

I aint been over the weekend, But June goes a few times a day with their warm milk, meat & biscuits. Bless her, what ever the weather, she is there.

Ive not been able to get thru on the phone to the rescue in Stoke  :(

Hi really sorry I haven't been on for a while, I've been grappling with the CP annual return which gave me a few very late nights and also my pc is not behaving itself very well, it's very old and I think on it's last legs. Sometimes it works properly and sometimes it doesn't Iit won't let me into word at the moment)

I have had a chat with our welfare bods and we unfortunately don't have anywhere to put the cats at the moment. Because we are so urban it's really hard to find places for them. We can help with trapping though, either lending out traps or by helping ourselves we just need to try and find somewhere for them to go. I haven't given up though and I am still trying to find somewhere. We are struggling a bit at the moment as we have cats with behaviour problems, heart murmers and tumours so our hard to homes are increasing by the day  :( Our Regional Development Manager is visiting us on 2nd March so I will have a word with her and see if ther is any help HQ can give, they may have some places for ferals as long as we can help to trap them. We won't give up on these baby's I promise.

Thanks Ann.
These babies are still hangin about, they know where they get fed & treats  :Luv:

You know i am sure these could easily be domesticated in some way, they show loving signs if you know what i mean.
I sat in my car the other day & they jumped on the bonnet & just sat looking at me  :( ( wish i could take them home)

Seems these litle ones are going off to do their own thing  :'(

They aint been sittin on my car today, & not seen any of them. The big metal bin that was behind their shelter
has been removed so now their shelter stands out as nothing to hide it.

Also kids have been hangin around there, as a some company parked their van there for a few days,
and this morning the windows, lights & wing mirrors were all smashed.
