Title: Vet just rang about Franta........i am in shock.....update
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on January 06, 2009, 21:10:00 PM
have just got off the phone from my vet........yes i know what time is.

the report has come in from bristol and things are not good.

bristol say that he would need to have one kidney and uretha ?sp, removed but he also has an enlarged heart so would need a heart scan and a kidney biopsy on the good kidney as this is showing signs of deterioation and they do not know how long he would cope with just the one kidney, albeit the bad one which has a stone is more orless not working anyway.

this would need him hospitalized in bristol for about two weeks but he does not fare well in this environment and would be extremely stressed.

the only alternative is convenia jabs to try and stave off infection in the bad kidney and monitoring. if he gets in pain then her recommendation would be to pts immediately as giving of strong painkillers will only act as a temporary block of the pain, the source of which nothing can be done about.

she has two cats herself, a moggy and a burmese aged 9yrs and i asked her what she would do if it was her cat. she said that the burmese was very laid back and hospitalization would not be a problem but for the moggy this was not be possible. however if the burmese was Frantas age, 15 1/2 she would  not put him through this and due to Frantas age and breed she did not think that this kind of invasive treatment would be a good idea.

I will get a copy of the report when we go on Friday as she is going away for two weeks and we agreed it was better for her to weigh him and check him out and maybe give convenia before she went away.

She also said that if he started to go downhill and started to vomit etc then also she would recommend PTS cos it would mean that he was suffering and there would be nothing else they could do to help him.

So basically poor Franta is left with only two choices, open cat surgery and scans and stuff, which may not be able to happen if his heart or other kidney are not well enough, or just let him play his days out but with no idea how long he has left  :'(

God, I am so sorry the news isn't good Gill, I have to say with his age and temperament, I wouldnt go down the operation route. Fingers crossed the ab's can give him some relief, and he can have lots of happy days with you.

I'm sorry that the news wasn't better.  Only you can decide what is the best course of action for Franta, whichever of the two options you go for you will do the best for him.  He will get the best care and love in the world from you and however much longer he has will be full of love.

Gill sorry to hear the sad news, I hope that you let him have his happy time at home with Injections as opposed to the other route

See if the vet will give you in the injections to do at home this will also lessen any stress

Remember he is still here and still happy so go with the flow and let him hjave as long as he can with his Mummy

Thank you all......am just feelin down at moment.

Will have to think about that one Liz, and then talk to the vet. I think she said there was no need for him to hqve injections every two weeks but think its gonna depend on how he is.

He has been lying against the radiator and got too hot so now lying in the coolest place in the front room, wondering if he has a temperature but doubt it somehow........trouble is I am gonna worry about everything now.

Apparently it is less than -8 outside!

I must make more fuss of Franta everyday.

We spoke a long time to night and yes I think she is very good and she also took the time to ring me tonight, well out of surgery hours.

I will see her again on Friday cos she is going to see Franta between ops that she is doing. I know she likes Franta a lot.

I dont think that going to Bristol is going to help him much, it may or may not extend his life a little but it could be that he would not be well enough to have the op anyway and he hates being in the car and it would be at least a two hour journey in each direction and staying in hospital and everything would just totally stress him which I am sure would not be good for him.

So probably am gonna take Rachels advice but will be thinking on it.

Awful news Gill. My heart goes out to you.

Was in similar situation earlier this year with Tom but he was 4 years older and a bit less of a difficult decision to opt for no invasive investigations.

Even so, 15 1/2 is not an age you would want to take many risks and who can say how long Franta will be with you in relative comfort without having to put up with invasive treatment.  It is of course your call and you will do the right thing for him.  So very upsetting.  You have a few days now to get a list of queries together to raise with your vet on Friday and to cuddle that little man to bits meanwhile.  :(

I'm so sorry Gill.  From your post it seems to me that the vet may be gently suggesting that you look after Franta with palliative TLC care at home rather than have the stress of travel and ops and an uncertain treatment outcome anyhow for him? Perhaps you could try the convenia to start with to see how it helps and give you a bit more time to think - it's so hard when you have to digest it all when you get the news on the phone.  I opted for no more invasive investigations because the treatment wasn't going to change or prolong life anyhow, with Swampy and it would just cause more stress. I suppose you'd have to find out whether the ops would improve his quality of life or allow him to live ages longer and what the likely success rate is. I just wish you all the best in whatever you decide and for much time still with Franta

That is hard news. I feel for you. But you must do what you feel is right in your heart. Only you can make that decision.

I hope you manage to stay calm, have a proper think about what you feel is the right thing to do and go with your gut instinct.

So sorry to hear the news Gill.  I know I wouldnt want to put a cat Frantas age through the surgery, and with the added worry of his enlarged heart.  Has the vet suggested treating the enlarged heart with fortekor as bungly mentioned, which would support his kidneys too? Maybe ask about that on Friday?

thanks everyone and am listening to all suggestions.

no rachel hasnt mentioned treating his heart and said on the xrays it didnt look that bad but to know properly it would need a scan and although they have a machine to scan with she is not a cardiologist and would not be able to interpret the scan.....i guess franta would have to be sedated again and to be honest i am not too keen on that.

i must start writing down all the questions before i forget.

franta was bumbling along quite happy till i had his teeth sorted and they did all these tests and stuff and tonight franta has acted sick all evening, just sleeping and lyin around. not one meow or demand......i so worried now.

I must admit Smartie ( touch wood!) seems to be doing well on it i think -he sleeps a fair bit -he is nearly 12 years and i had him at 18months and he is my superbaby ! :Luv2: very cuddly , but he does have a play in the evenings -he does look quite old sometimes - Sophie is nearly 15 , but you wouldn''t really know it , her eyes are still deep orange , she does sleep a lot ! but eats well and on her last blood tests around 8 months ago the vet said there was absolutely nothing wrong with her !
Really hope Franta will benefit from some treatment ( not the invasive surgery one) - i do send healing vibes to him every night as i know he hasn't been good - i send them to all the furry babes who are poorly - including Franta, Sam and Swampy - hope they work !

Thank you all so much, your support is just great.

I am very much inconsolable at the moment and I trying to rationalize that Franta is no different today than he was before the vet rang but its not working.

Trouble is he is not the same and its almost like he has tuned in to the conversation and is just lying around sleeping or dozing. He has refused food this morning but maybe he ate too many biscuits in the night............hopes.

Alison you are so right but please will you tell Franta, and also we are having to go to the vets on Friday, and I am supposed to be out all day tomorrow and both of those things will upset him.

Because of what he has done to his fur since mid december, he is looking a shadow of his former self and so small as all fluffy cats do when they lose most of their fur............I upset him big time cos had to go away over night twice in a couple of weeks and think stress plays a big role in his little life since he was ill in October/Nov.

Am wondering whether I should cancel out of my art workshop tomorrow.

Yes the list of questions for my vet is growing and all logic has gone out of the window.

It's such a difficult thing to balance out the stresses that they have to face in life.  If only we could take them all away.  If you think it is in Franta's best interests to stay home then do it.  You know what is best for Franta.  My thoughts are with you.  Maybe Franta is picking up on your anxiety?  Best of luck

I am so sorry to hear the news about Franta.

As for your art workshop - I am not sure of your personal circs  and whether you are running the workshop or participating. If you are participating and there are are other opportunities to go or this is a regular thing then I would be inclined not to go. When Bertie was really ill and I had had bad news from the vet I was babysitting my little sister and considered cancelling it and didn't  - I wish I had on refelction and well maybe think about what will happen if you miss it - you will know what is best

Nothing to say but add my sympathies. Don't feel that you have to go for the surgery to do everything possible for him as the pallative care is quite often the kindest thing for them at that age.
I'm not sure how long recovery would take from having a kidney removed. Again I can only say that fortecor may be a way to go if he's strong enough to cope with it.

Whatever you decide, It will be in Franta's best interest.

Oh Gill, I can't stop crying.  It's like Franta is part of my family since the Valentine post last February when he won both Bonnie's and my heart.  I think we all know what is coming and if I was you I would spend every moment I could with him.  I know you won't let him suffer and it is going to be very difficult for you.

There is nothing else I can say.  Hope these pics of Franta and Bonnie's Valentine date bring a smile to your face.  Probably a tear. :Luv2:

Thank you mary, you are right a tear.

Today , infact since the vet rang he has not been good....think he was listening and is playing on my sympathey grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

He wandered outside at about 0200 this morning when it was about -11 and then came back and was very hungry but the problem is he has not eaten since and has spent all day hugging the radiator.

Then I have realized that apart from Sasa no other cat has eaten at all and she hasnt eaten much, so dont know what is going on. Franta was absolutely fine before the vet rang and we have to go and see her on Friday.

Someone said that maybe he is picking up on my stress and if he is so are all the other cats and dont know what to do about it. How do I stop sending out stress vibes. please someone help me.

That's a hard one to solve I'm afraid Gill.  All animals know when ther eis something wrong and they are fretting I suppose.  Sympathy for you and also for Franta.  No way on this earth can you possibly hide how you are feeling.

Maybe it's just this bloody stupid weather that is making them not want to eat.

Oh God how I wish I had a magic wand.

I don't think you can stop sending out the stress vibes, its not something you can control really. Cats can pick up on the slightest change in our moods I'm sure. Hang on in there, sending positive vibes from me and the 11 - thats a lot of vibes!

Thanks Gillian  ;D

I am going tro try and normalize things again to see if we can get back on track and am off to my workshop tomorrow. That should help to ease my stress being with other peeps and also am gonna ring vets tomorrow cos seem to recall that Rachel wasnt worried if we saw her before her hoilday or after. They can send the report to me that I was gonna collect.

I must try and act normal again cos otherwise its stress all the way cos I suffer from acute anxiety normally and dont need anything more than that for the cats sake.

Gill, so sorry to read this thread, have only just come on for the first time in days.

I know you will do what is right for Franta, regardless of your feelings and you must make sure you take care of yourself, - you say the cats aren't eating, I hope you are - you are no good to any of them if you get ill.

All the gang here are sending positive vibes to Franta and you.

:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: that's how many heads there are here sending you hugs.

I'm so sorry to hear the news Gill   I have some idea of how you must be feeling because I was shocked when I got Korky's last kidney results as they were bad yet he had seemed fine in himself.  Instantly I could see him going downhill and worried about his behaviour whatever he did.  Once I'd got over the initial shock and decided how I was going to manage things (reminds me - must update his thread), I realised that he is behaving exactly as he was behaving before I got his results.  The only difference is that I know he's worse because of the tests but he doesn't so for him its business as usual.  So once you've decided which option you are going to follow (and I think you already have) try to take each day as it comes and don't analyse his behaviour too closely - if you look for ill-omens you can always find them.  Easily said I know but it really will help if you can try to think positive.  We're all here to help.  To get you started I'm sending bucketloads of positive vibes

Thank you Carol, you are absoluterly right and I had sorta got into this way before the vet rang cos had sorta decided what ever was discovered in the tests, he was like this before but the stuff at the vets had upset him so much it took ages to get him eating and vet intervention did not help......................Ok now I have stressed him and all the others but in last few mins he sicked up a big fur ball and thats the best news ever  :shify:

Hope fully he may want to eat again now although I have to say the other cats are not exactly wolfing their food down again yet especially Mr Misa Dyson!

I decided we are off to the vets tomorrow cos he was so stressed already, I thought maybe we should do a car trip now rather than stress him in a couple of weeks when I hope he has settled down........now of course I am regretting not cancelling it!

I hope he has not lost more that a body full of fur in weight terms and I am calm enough to ask all my questions.

Thanks Lesley, thats an awful lot of heads  ;D

I think all birmans should stand united  ;D

I think I have lost a marble or two in the last couple of days............where have I put my questions.........sigh

Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on January 09, 2009, 13:47:51 PM
Thank you for the thoughts

Franta shouted at the top of his voice all the way in the car as normal.......sigh. So much so that when waiting at a long wait set of lights I put car into neutral and forgot to put handbrake on and rolled back very slightly and felt a little judder and heard a car honking but could tell where it was coming from.

Couldnt work any of this out till later and thought someone had got too close and slightly bumped me but reckon it was me............no damage cos it must have been moving so slowly that I didnt notice and the car followed me dfor a way and I was trying to remember number plate but my car is very dirty and not a mark on the dirt LOL.........phew.

Any way vet was very pleased with Franta and said he was much better than she had expected and he has actually put on weight!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is now 4kg 20  ;D

He has a little bt of something stuck to his tail end and she thinks thats why he has been over grooming, its minute and she couldnt get it off, she said he maybe sore underneath it but it will leave of its own accord or with Franta licking. Said if he is sleeping I could try and soften with some warm water...........by his reaction , he would not be sleeping for long !

I now have the report and the lady who made it says that he has shrunken left kidney with calcification and and a chain of mineral opacities which are probably within the left ureter. The kidney is unlikely to be functioning much and the uroliths?????? do not need to be removed.

However should there be a persistant uniary tract infection then surgery could be considered to remove the kidney and ureter completly. She says that as Franta has an enlarged heart the possible benfit of surgery would have to be weighed up against the risks and if there are few clinical signs, it may be preferable to manage Franta as currently.

The stuff sent through from the surgery also showed something with his lungs which could indicate pneumonia or lung collapse but she says if there are no clinical signs then its probably underinflation............................no clinical signs and reckon Franta was holding his breath!!

My vet must have asked some questions about giving him convenia in the future but after checking his heart Rachel was very pleased cos she said the murmer was not sounding and maybe it only comes on when he very stressed, and the car journey did not stress him out sufficiently to bring it on. This sounds like very good news.

I took my list of questions and she has taken a copy to deal with later but the report answers many of them.

I have to say I am feeling a bit happier, although there was one question that was really getting me down if the worst should happen as I am so far from the vets. She has said that she is sure that a home visit can be arranged and I hope this will be a very long time in the future.

Its a beautiful day, the sky is blue and although cold much warmer than it has been although the ground is still frozen and I feel a sense of relief and hope that my blue-eyed baby man Franta will keep on rallying for a long time.

Just one other thing, I have never seen so many intials after a vets name before but the lady, well could be a guy cos dont know if Frances is the male oe female version although think it female, that did the report is MA VetMB Phd DVR DipECVID MRCVS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what a lot to write every time you sign something  ;D  Sounds very highly qualified though.

Did you ask about the fortekur for the heart problem ?

I know how it is when you worry - i had Winston at the vets last night and he seemed ok in himself- yet after he had been , later on i am positive to me he started looking ill and miserable ! Could have been the injections or my imagination -but he is fine today ! No wonder my hair is going grey !!

Its on the list of questions I left with the vet Bungly but to be honest i am not wanting to start him on any drugs unless its really necessary cos right now his heart sounds fine and he seems to be plodding along as normal and its only his eating which is the main problem........but he has put on weight.........i give up LOL

Yes I need to get everything back to normal but I want to make sure Franta and the others all get lots of affection and cuddles.....maybe I will feel more like eating tonight!

i bought a number......sigh.....of little expensive tins of complimentary fishfood today on way home, cos he will not touch the full cat food ones and neither will any of others. its anything to get him to eat really and hope that i can get him eating basic felix in jelly again.......well the jelly plus his biscuits!

that sheba is it quite jelly fied mark...........did buy some other little tins today as well but cant remember what make they were....expensive is all i can remeber lol.

The sheba is very small pieces in a softish jelly. I got mine on offer in Somerfield - 6 for £2. I think the offer is on in Sainsburys as well. It mushes up really easily with a fork. He will eat that even when he refuses his regular stuff.
