Title: Totally new to the cat world, but so, so excited!!! Toby's arrived ... PICS!!!!
Post by: McIntyre Quad! on August 14, 2008, 21:08:57 PM
Hi Guys,

We're so excited!  Finally after two weeks of discussion, we have decided to rescue a cat.  We were torn between a house rabbit and a cat, but decided a cat would fit in better to our home.

We want to offer an older cat the opportunity of a loving home, because they are often over looked.  I called the cat protection league today and they have a 14 year old cat called Toby.  We're going to meet him on Saturday and we can't wait.  I'm not sure who's more excited, myself, my husband or our two and a half year old son.

Fingers crossed for Saturday.  Maybe, we will be able to plaster Toby's picture on here soon :Luv2:

Hello and  :welcome: to Purrs,

You've come to the right place to learn all there is to know about cats and cat slavery (I'm sure you will have realised by now that the cat in a house is always in charge ... us lesser mortals are merely here to serve the superior beings  ;) ).

I hope all goes well tomorrow and Toby is the right cat for your family ... if your not quite right for him don't be dis-heartened as there are lots of oldies out there and Ihave no doubt you will find your perfect "master" in no time.

If you have any questions (anything at all) just ask away and we will be more than happy to help.

Sam, Foxy, Zephyr and Rossi xxxx

Toby was gorgeous.  I think he liked us too.  He jumped up on my lap a couple of times and had a lot to say!  Kept nudging our hands for a cuddle.  Didn't seem bothered about our son either.  Turns out he's slightly deaf too.  We should be a right team, as my son and I are also deaf and wear two hearing aids.  We have reserved him and now we're just waiting for our home visit.  Fingers crossed, it will be ok.  We're trying not to get our hopes up, but we would be really gutted if our home turns out not to be suitable.  If we do get him, we're going to keep his name as Toby.  I don't think it would be fair to change his name now.  14 years is a long time to get used to a name.

Good luck for the home check, im sure you'll do fine, a 14 year old is looking for something different compared to a young cat that will go looking for trouble!

Well done again for taking on an oldie, they are most greatful for a second chance  ;D

Just had our home visit.  Not sure how it went to be honest. :-:  She said she liked our garden as it was much bigger than she thought, but she felt the road was quite busy.  I did explain that we would be willing to wait for an indoors cat, if our home wouldn't be suitable for Toby because of the road.  Feeling disappointed now.  She's going to ring the shelter tomorrow.  Guess we'll have to wait and see.  We'd grown attached to the idea of Toby living with us. :(

If Toby is deaf, perhaps it would be better for him to be confined to your house and garden anyway?  Then the road wouldnt be an issue.

Is it possible to "cat-proof" your garden?  If you are unable to adopt Toby because of the road then if you offer to cat proof or build an outdoor run then there would be no reason why he couldn't come and live with you.

Check out these links for ideas of runs:  http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php/topic,17444.0.html

My husband tried calling the adoption centre this afternoon, to see if they have made their decision.  Unfortunately, the manageress had been called out.  Won't know until tomorrow now.  I'm kind of thinking that if it was positive news they would have called by now.   :( We did tell them at the house visit though, that if they decided our road was too busy we would wait for an oldie that likes to stay in.  May be that's what they will decide.  :innocent:

We're trying to be sensible and not think about it too much, but we would be really gutted if they turned us down.  It wasn't just that we liked Toby, he seemed to like us too and I'd hate to let him down.  Especially if it's just because of the road.  I know the adoption centre will have his best interests at heart, so I guess I should be thankful for that.  If he doesn't come to live with us, at least I can rest knowing that his next home will have to be perfect for him and that's what he deserves.  Roll on tomorrow, when we should get our news!  :Luv2:

Just come back from a day out at Springfields horse and pony centre.  Called the CP people when we got back and ... ;DToby's coming home on Saturday!!!!!! :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:  They are concerned about the road, but we have promised to keep him in at school run hours and walk him round the garden on a lead until he gets used to it and keep him in for at least 2 months, because his old home is only 4 miles from us.  I don't think they could have said no really.   ;)Toby will get to feel carpet under his feet after all.  I can't tell you how excited and really happy we are.  It's also our wedding anniversary today, so a double celebration.   :thanks: for all your support guys.  You were right there with us, while we were waiting anxiously for our news.  Good news, good news hip hip horray.  As you can probably tell, I am well happy.  Going to go and buy him a bed this afternoon and all the essentials.  We're going to buy his carry case from the CP on Saturday and make a very generous donation.  I still can't quite believe it. ;D ;D

Yay!!!  ;D

Bring on the dancing bananas......
:yayyy: :yayyy: :yayyy: :yayyy:

Excellent news, and happy anniversary too!   You may find Toby settles completely as an indoor cat, but if he doesn't then the strategy you've worked out is a good start.    :cheer: :cheer:

The thorny question of indoor/outdoor has valid arguments for both sides.  And yet, for those of us who do have outdoor access cats, I think much depends on the area you live, the age and character of the cat etc.  I lost two cats at our old house without explanation, and yet Paddy lived under exactly the same circumstances and conditions and I'm pleased to say has made it into a rather gentle and mellow golden age of catdom at the ripe old age of 16 - nearly 17 in two  months' time!    Older cats are generally more content to stay in or about their own patch, enjoying the odd spot of sunshine or snuggling up by a cosy radiator.  Here's to Toby living out the rest of his days in perfect content with the McIntyre Trio!  :drink:

:thanks: guys.  We were going to go out and celebrate, but have opted for chinese, Hagan Daas ice-cream, red wine and a DVD.  3 years today.  After our fantastic news about Toby, we went to the pet shop today and bought him a new bed.  We opted for a plastic one, with two really nice blankets.  Any ideas where I can buy Iams delicate biscuit food?  Could only find the senior one in Asda, is that the same??? :thanks:

I am really pleased to hear this - although I would restrict his outdoor access to supervised only cos of the concerns about his hearing, and he may not appreciate being walked on a lead, very few cats do. Not sure about Iams biscuits am afraid, I refuse to feed them.

We were advised by the CP people to feed him Iams delicate, because that was what he ate at his last home.  Why wouldn't you feed them?

There are ethical issues with Iams, but the main reason is that for the price of it, you could get something that IMO is much better quality, i think it is overpriced and not great ingredients. You probably would have to change his food over gradually, although a mix of wet and dry food is best.

We all have a bit of an "issue" with Iams as they have a poor record of animal testing this site has ore information http://www.iamscruelty.com/   ... of course you won't be banished if you do decide to feed this product  ;)  but it's always nice to be informed.

There are lots of other very good quality foods which are much more "animal freindly" ... I feed Royal Canin which goes down very well with my lot.  Or James well beloved , hills or orijen are also very good.

I did a search for sensitive cat dry on zooplus and it brought up the following:  http://www.zooplus.co.uk/ask?query=sensitive+cat+dry&form=search

Counting down the nights.  Only two more and then Toby can come home.  ;D I set his bed up last night with his blanket and when my son George came down this morning I told him it was Toby's bed.  Then later on, when I had a visitor and I said to George, "where's Toby's bed" he went straight to it.  We also had a conversation about what George likes and he told me, "Toby and Bodmin!".  Bless him.  My husband went back to work today and I've already had an email from him saying "woo Hoo, Toby coming home soon".  He's 32 in two weeks time and I'm not sure who's excitement is harder to contain, his or our two and a half year old.  Mind you, I can't talk.  I keep wanting to go and get him now!

how lovely!  Toby is going to be very lucky

I used to use Royal canin sensible (then a number poss 33??) when my bengal had tummy issues, you can get that from joyelles and pets at home or as Sam says Zooplus - I still get excited about the parcels coming from them even though I know what is in them!!

Can't believe we collect Toby tomorrow.   ;D

I woke up at 3.15am this morning from a nightmare.  I dreamt that the next door neighbours went out and bought a dog and it was harrassing Toby.  Took me over a hour to go back to sleep.

I've decided to wait and see what the CP people recommend tomorrow, before I go out and buy food.  I'm slightly concerned about changing his diet, as well as his surroundings all at the same time.  I thought maybe it would be best to buy what he's eating at the moment and then research fully the best food for him, before changing it.  When we went to see him at the CP centre, they told us that he doesn't like meat, will only eat biscuits.  However, someone has already informed me it's best to have both.  I want to make sure I get it right.  I thought science plan was quite a good food.  I always see it in vets.  What do you guys think?

Hopefully, I can send some pictures soon.  I think he is gorgeous.

well the vets do make money out of science plan but I'm no expert so wouldn't say its not good, mine have royal canin and I know lots of people use the own brand pets at home but I agree intially you should probably stick with what he has, they might give you some to take home - good luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Definitely a mix, and if he will accept it, more wet than dry with his age, it is better for his kidneys. I would ring and ask them today what he is currently eating, or buy a small bag of what they have recommended just so you have some in for him straight away. I Wouldn't feed SCience Plan, I dont think the ingredients are good enough for the cost, similar to Iams really - PAH have their food on offer this weekend.

Well, I think Toby's very lucky to be coming to your house to live, because you're so geared up towards his needs it's just brilliant, and I think it's a good idea not to change too many things straight away, so that he gets time to accustom himself to his new home.  I fully recall though telling the lady at the cattery when Paddy used to go there for a holiday that he'd only eat meat in jelly, and he proceeded to defy me by eating a plate of meat in gravy right before my very eyes!  :evillaugh:  A change is as good as rest, as me old mum used to say!

Thats the best thing to do, stress can upset tummies on its own so a food change at the same time is not a good idea!
In regards to meat if they offer tinned food that may be why he ignores it, pouches taste better  ;)

Good luck for tomorrow!  :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Only 6.5 hrs till we can collect Toby.  I'm still excited, but getting really nervous now as well. :scared:We've never owned a cat before, so I'm starting to doubt everything.  i.e What time do I feed him, what if he does escape etc etc  I'll be asking lots of questions this afternoon.  I can always call on you guys as well.  Must try and relax a bit.  I hope he does like his new home.

Yes please do relax. All will be well. You will settle into a routine with feeding him. There are no set rules to it. Toby is very lukck to have such a loving family.

He will love his new home. It's amazing how quickly they settle in. It's sounds as though he will have lots of fuss. Please don't doubt everything. I'm sure you will be a natural.

Good luck, and enjoy him.

I wouldn't worry too much ... Toby is an older experienced human owner he will soon get you into a rountine that suits him and you will wonder why you were worried at all.

The more relaxed you are then the more relaxed he will be  :).   I'm sure he'll be bossing you about in no time and demanding you feed him when he's hungry  :hungey:.  Good luck today - post us some pics when you pick him up x  :Luv2:

Hello and  :welcome:  to Purrs

Just go with the flow - you will be fine.  I woke up with three cats on my bed last night, they make themselves at home so much quicker than you expect.

As for feeding mine get Whiskas and Tescos own brand and I have never had any complaints yet.

Guess who's here...........Toby!

Tried to attach some pics, but they're too big.  Error keeps coming up.  However, you should be able to see him on our profile pic.

Bless him.  He's only been here 5 mins and he's already made himself at home!   ;)

Really pleased.  Toby's just had something to eat!!  They told us at the centre, that when he first got there he didn't eat for a week.  They told us not to expect him to eat for a couple of days.  Well, he's already proved them wrong and has already bagged his seat on the sofa! :)

Awww he's stunning. He reminds me of my wee Smokie, who was all white  :( . For the record, he was grey and white as a kitten but it turned out to be dirt, however the name stuck!

Give Toby a big hug from me.

He is most definately boss.  He seems very proud and quite serious.  Keeps looking at our son as if to say "what's the juvenile doing!!???"    Behind the mask though, he is very loving.   :Luv: Keeps coming up to us miaowing and nudging our hands.  Keeps following my husband round like a lost sheep.  I can see the resemblance

First night home was a huge success.  He laid on my lap and chest the whole evening.  Seemed very much at home.  Sam's kindly re-sizing the photo's, so I can post them on here.  You'll have to ignore my PJ's though.

I saw him eating three times yesterday as well and when we came down this morning there were only a few bits of his food left.  Just groomed him, which he seemed ok with.  He's sitting on the chair next to me, as we speak.  He follows us round the house and comes to his name.  He's brill.  He makes us feel complete as a family.

He can moult all he likes.  I've got my trusty dyson.   :)  Must admit, we don't let him in the bedrooms anyway, because of our little boy.  Often find him on the landing though. ;)

Hi Everyone,

Feels like ages since I gave you all an update!  Had to tell you the latest news.  Today, my son George and Toby have found a new game to play together.  I blow bubbles and the pair of them pop them.  George jumps around and Toby pounces.  Had George in fits of giggles and Toby was acting just like a kitten   It took George about three days to get used to Toby, but he seems to have finally accepted him.  He's not into stroking him, but will now tolerate him bearing very close to him.  Even sharing a sofa together now.

My husband called the vets today and got Toby McIntyre registered.  We're taking him to the nurse next week to have his claws clipped.  I'm too scared to try it myself.  Worried he may take offence!

Toby had me on a right merry dance today.  He managed to get past me when I was carrying George through the back door, so I anxiously followed him calling his name.  He'd obviously decided he wasn't called Toby anymore, so I decided to pick him up and bring him home.  He'd only gone a metre at the most, but it was enough to panic me.  I was worried about picking him up, because the CP people said he didn't like being picked up.  He didn't protest at all.  Don't think it's someone I'd like to have to do again mind.

He's still eating like there's no tomorrow, so that's a good sign that he's settled in.  We're going to the CP open day on Saturday, to buy Toby some more food, litter and toys.  May be we should just go to Toys R us and buy him more bubbles  ;D

I am so pleased to hear that Toby is settling in and that George is getting to know him and play nicely with him  ;D

You know, you may find that Tobys aversion to being picked up completely disappears as he continues to relax in his new home...

I am glad he is settling in well, but I wouldnt worry too much about picking him up if he seemed fine with it - I adopted out 2 cats just over a week ago, one hated being picked up, yet a week into his new home, she had picked him up and put him on her knee, and he accepted it - I tried that and he hated it. Mind you, he was also the first to sit on her knee, and he was with us for a total of 2 months and showed no signs of being a lapcat. So sometimes, they just act differently when they know they are in their forever home.
