Ahhhh bless em ... they will come round soon .... the best thing you can do is sit on the floor and let them come to you ... if you are doing something interesting like reading they will come and see what you are upto.

Patience is a virtue  ;)

Typical LOL.......you get them a nice comfy bed and they go into the most uncomfy place they can be

How old are they?

Maybe you need to put some blankets into all that space cos they are probably used to being all cuddly with the rest of their family  ;D

They look so cute, what are their names?

They're gorgeous babies!  Please tell me they aren't called Chardonnay and Gerwurtzraminer  :evillaugh:

It'll just be because everything's new, and they don't have Mum there for reference any more.  You're their Mum now, but they'll need a little time to readjust and then you won't be able to do anything at all without two little shadows!
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: toothfairy on July 08, 2008, 08:04:54 AM
huh...wine not thought of that i prefer red so i might go for Merlot...

lol, their names are Floss (girl) Tepe (boy) (an interdental brush we reccomend as alternative to using dental floss)

I am a dental nurse and it just came to me that they were cute 'short' names hopefully they will stick and my hubby doesn't mind calling them that.

he works away and doesn't know we have kittens....eek!

i got similar makings so hopefully after the shock of realsing we have a kitten he might just think we have one for a few days and not two, might soften the blow if he realises it on his own!!!!!

Awwwww those names are REALLY cute!! I'm glad you got to pick them yourself anyway!!! it's taken us two weeks to agree on two names we both like!!

   I use those tepe things!

Only thought of white wine 'cos they is lil white babies!  ;)

Ah, I see - like that witht he OH, eh?  Well, lets hope at least one of them adores their Daddy to  bits - nothing wins them round faster than having the total adoration of a cat!

Anyway, hope Floss and Tepe come out of their shells a bit more today,a nd that you have a great day off with them.  ;D

 :)

If the first food they've eaten since they got to their new home is this morning, then it may just be the newness again which has meant they haven't used their litter tray yet.   Once they've finished brekkie, you could try picking them up and popping them on the tray, or giving their tunnies a little rub to stimulate their digestive and elimination tract.

Make sure they've plenty of fresh clean water available.  You can also try and persuade them with some junior catmilk too.  Hopefully they should be weeing and pooping as normal very soon.  You might find they're a bit loose though at first, due to change of diet.  Kittens can dehydrate very quickly, so just keep a careful eye on them and they should be fine.

Looking forward to hearing more about them as they settle in  :)

i feel such a horrible person, i had to quarentine them in the spare room this evening whilst i de-fleaed the kitchen washed all their stuff washed the floor and cupboards inc skirting boards, brought them back down stairs and they keep meeowing and walking in circles...they look all confused and upset.

i don't think i am very good at this mummy stuff, i just want to cry for them.

the poor little kitties keep crying and up close you can see the fleas crawling on them, i don't know what to do, shouldn't they have died by now?

was on the phone to my hubby earlier and told him the hole story and then i got really upset cause i just don't think i am a very good mum and i miss him so much.

i would be totaly alone if i didn't have you guys, thank you xxx
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on July 08, 2008, 22:52:33 PM
What did the vet use on them for fleas?  Some of the treatments require the fleas to bite them first before they die so you'll still see live ones for a while.

Ruth is right, I had a boy kitten Riley and a girl kitten Kali... for the first day  :evillaugh:  Discovered at the vets that I had two boys so Kali became Lucas aka Lukey  :)
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: toothfairy on July 08, 2008, 23:03:02 PM
they used frontline in a spray bottle then rubbed it in.

the cat i had as a child was a girl but when we sent her to get 'done' the vet rang my mum at work to say actually holly is a he not a she!   :-[
but we still called him Holly.

i don't know what i am going to do about names now....is floss a boys name?????
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on July 08, 2008, 23:13:42 PM
I've never used frontline spray but I know a lot of the rescues use it on tehir kittens so it must be good.  Floss is a bit girly but if it suits her him then there's no reason you can't stick with it.  I like Floyd for a boy which is similar but obviously doesn't keep in with your dental theme  :evillaugh:
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: toothfairy on July 08, 2008, 23:24:30 PM
suppose floss is a little too girly.....

i have gone all itchy since i found out about the fleas, stupid question can i catch them?
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on July 08, 2008, 23:30:10 PM
You can't 'catch them' as such as you don't have any fur for them to live in but they can bite you  :shy:  From what I gather the kittens have been kept in one room with no carpets and seeing as you've only had them such a short while the rest of your house should be flea and flea egg free, now you've sprayed the kitchen and washed bedding etc you should get on top of the problem fairly quickly.

If I were you I'd spray the spare room you quarantined them in while doing the kitchen and if you're worried about getting bitten you can spray mosquito spray on yourself tonight to put them off, I really don't think you'll have a problem though as I like i said you've not had them long and have done everything you can to wipe them out.

yep sprayed spare room, don't have any mosq spray but once i have clean pj's on i prob will be fine.  i just sprayed spare room again and shut door on it.

How was last night?  Hope you're feeling a bit chirpier this morning and not worrying yourself quite so much.

Yep, think if they're both little lads, Floss is a tad girlie.  I think Floyd's a good suggestion Helen.  Better than Fluoride, which does maintain the dental theme, but could be a mouthful (sorry - no pun intended)  :shy:

am not feeling very cheerful this morning, they seem all unsteady on their feet and i have to leave them now to go to work, finish at lunch time today.

i just want them to be healthy.
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: Sue P (Paddysmum) on July 09, 2008, 08:01:57 AM
If you're at all worried TF, the vets won't mind you giving them a call to discuss any concerns you might have, and it might help to put your mind at rest.  I would think that the vet would've given them a kitten check when you were there with them last night, but there's no harm in having a chat with the practice if you're worried.   I think sometimes maybe we just feel over-anxious with our babies, because we want the very best for them, but that can't be a bad thing, because it means we care.
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on July 09, 2008, 09:19:22 AM
 You're ok. They will be fine.

As Sue says contact the vet to get some reassurance. THey're only ickle so they are going to be a little needy. Don't worry, as they will keep themselves entertained with each other, and they will most likely sleep.

The fleas will go, it just takes a little time.

i did it and they didn't struggle or anything, i am so proud of them! :Luv:

...although i did see one little friend fly off before i could even drop the comb to get it, little bugga, so i put the babies in there clean basket etc and put them in the clean spare room with food and litter tray have now sprayed whole of kitchen again (i did it in there on a white towelcause tepe started to really panic on the slippy bath i thought i would do it in the kitchen on a towel and floss watched intently)

so have resprayed the kitchen and will leave it for the hour thenwash the kitchen down again and put them back in, few another manic evening.

they are wrestling each other in the spare room when i left them.

i do feel a lot better now that i think i have eliminated the cheeky blighters, fingers and toes crossed they are gone.

How are your little bundles of mischief today?
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: toothfairy on July 10, 2008, 18:30:19 PM
they seem a lot happier today which is really encouraging, they still aren't very interested in me, but i am stroking them and picking them up occasionally just so they have that human contact soon they will be ready to come over to me. they love their toys and floss is obsessed with tepe's tail, they wrestle all the time which is quite funny to watch.

they keep standing in there mess in the litter tray when they try to cover it back over

i am just so grateful for all the advice, thank you Sue

It sounds to me like they're settling in really well.  Because there are two of them, they will play with each other quite a lot, but they'll be getting used to you, whether you realise it or not, and they'll know you're their Number 1 Mum.   ;D  Think maybe you were feeling a bit unsure of yourself at first, probably because you're on your own at the moment with Mike being away, and it's quite a big step bringing two little bundles of fluff into your home then doing a vet's trip and the whole de-fleaing and worming thing when you're new to it.  Sounds to me like you're shaping up wonderfully well as Tepe and Floss's Mum   ;)

thank you you a really kind, it is a lot harder than i remember, it'sreally hard work to keep up with them with the constant feeding, pooping, and cleaning...endless at times i do wonder if i did the right thing cause taking them both on but i know eventually they will settle and life wil be a different pace.

i have found it really dificult doing this on my own aswell, not only are they a challenge but i miss mike so much, i am so emotional at the moment keep crying all the time (even you last couple of post to me have got me teary eyed).

we put an offer on a house today one that we saw last weekend, they sellers want more i hate this whole battle of wills, feels like my life is in someone else's hands.

in the picture you can see the wine rack thay have take refuge to when they get a bit unsettled which isn't ideal but right now i am fine with it cause i would rather them run and hide there than run behind the fridge or tumble dryer.

i went into the kitchen earlier and found one of them in the second from top wine shelf any tips on how to keep them from getting on the surfaces, i thought it would be a long while until i would have to deal with this problem.

ummm cats on worktops ... that age old issue.  Personally I have never stopped any of my lot getting onto the work surfaces ... it saves so much stress in the long run  :naughty:  I used to try lifting them down every time they jumped up but then it just became a battle of wills and I have to say cats have alot more patience than I have and they would simply wait until I left the room then jump up again   Also as I give my furries a free run of the house when I am at work all day it hardly seemed fair to make them stay off the worktops when I was at home as I knew full lwell they would jump up the minute I left the house.

As long as you keep the surfaces clear and wipe them down regularly (Milton fluid is good) I can't see a problem but that's just my view.

Cat's are not like dogs and the more you try to train them the more they will rebel!  Cats are naturally curious so if you are doing something on the worktop they will invariably have to jump up to have a look to see what you are doing in case they are missing something!

Yep, all my puds have always jumped up on the benches.  Just keeping them clean seems to do the trick.  Haven't ever come down with anything nasty that I'd directly attribute to the cats (apart from obsessive compulsive disorder!  :evillaugh:)

Sounds like you're doing great being a new Meowmy to 2 such lovely ickle furries. It is all so daunting to start with, but you'll soon get into a routine with it all. And any questions, just ask as there are so many experienced people on here who are all willing to give good advice. It must be hard with Mike away, but think of what a great weekend you'll have playing with your new little monsters  :Luv: I've managed to get the afternoon off work today and so I told my 2 when I left this morning that I'll be back at lunch today and we can have lunch together in the garden (it was sunny when I left!!) and then play some fun games all afternoon, the cleaning can wait  :evillaugh:

My 2 had fleas when they arrived. When we picked them up the lady said oh they've got a few visitors on them and so we weren't too worried. The next morning when we went down to the kitchen, their bed which had one of my old black jumpers in, was covered in white fleas eggs. We went and got some frontline spray from the vets and so within 12 hours of coming home the poor little babies were drenched with a "flea spray shower", and weren't too impressed! They looked so sad and grumpy, I felt so mean. But the fleas started to fall off and the kitchen floor was covered, they must have been so uncomfortable and itchy poor things. But touchwood we haven't had any more problems with fleas and now I have a huge bottle of expensive flea spray sat in the cupboard  :tired:!

With their names, I know it's probably going to sound really really stupid, but can you not just swap them round, so Floss for the girl and Tepe for the boy?

With the worktops, it's so hard trying to stop them. We've got a small winerack built into our kitchen, smaller than yours, so each hole fits one bottle. Polly went into the bottom hole first and then they discovered that they could climb up it like a ladder to get onto the worktop! As the shelf bits are removeable I was worried they'd fall so I ended up taking them out for a while. But they will get onto the worktops as it's new and they want to discover what's there. For the first couple of months we shut them in the kitchen at night, I used to go and check on them just before I went to sleep. I remember going in once and Polly was all tucked up in her bed and Fergus was no where to be seen. I eventually found him asleep on the worktop in the corner where the boiler is on the wall above, he was right tucked up in the corner bless him. he kept wanting to sleep there for some reason so I ended up putting a cosy blanket up there for him.

Honestly you're doing fine though, it's natural to feel emotional. Enjoy it whilst they're young and dinky  :Luv:  :Luv:  :Luv:

bless you girlies thank you x

i keep chuckling to myself they keep wrestling with each other, last night tepe had floss pinned on the floor with his mouth round his throat and floss was yelping, i clapped really loudly and they stopped and then carried on, so i went off to bed and was wondering what i would wake up to this morning!

when they are running and jumping on each other for some reason they insist on doing it around and in the litter tray  i tried to wipe their paws but 5 mins later theyare covered! cheeky monkey's  :naughty:

i also ave a large can of flea spray for the house should i feel the need!

each day is getting better, i don't feel so out of my deapth.

i was sweeping the kitchen floor with a dust pan and brush and they thought it was a game and were trying to flick the bits back out of the dustpan, not at all helpful whilst trying to clean up as my land lord is coming tonight. i told them they had to be on their best behaviour hee hee.

i am so excited....last night before bed i  sat on the kitchen floor with my legs out and within 5 mins they were both lying down my legs purring then started wrestling. it was a real turning point, i am so pleased  :Luv:  i sat on the floor again this morning and they came up for another cuddle,(why do i never have my camera with me) i made the most of them being still and combed them which they seemed to enjoy untill floss started biting tepe's tail and they rolled off my lap and off they went rolling around the kitchen floor.

tepe seems to have food or something else similar looking on his fur tried to comb it out but it sort of matted i tried a damp cloth but didn't help, any suggestions?

:Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2: Ahh I'm so glad they are finally showing an interest in you.

I wouldn't worry too much about the sneezing ... they have probably just had their noses in a dusty corner (not doubting your cleaning abilities at all  ;) ).

If they develop runny eyes or start to show any other signs of illness I would of course get them off to the vet ASAP.

Love the piccie Rhiannon!  :)

As Sam says, I wouldn't worry about the sneezing unless they show other signs of being off-colour, such as their eyes being sore, runny or the third eyelid coming across, or if they have upset tums and are listless.

They don't sounds like they're listless - they sound like they're being typical explorer kitties!  :evillaugh:

i introduced them to the hall and stairs this evening they couldn't get up them quick enough! cheeky monkey's.

can i just ask whether or not i should be concerned cause they don't seem to be drinking any water...i held the water bowl up to tepe's mouth and he took a few laps but dismissed it really and floss wasn't at all interested, i put fresh out every morning and evening but it doesn't seem to go down at all.

As long as you have fresh down regularly its fine. The wet food they eat has a lot of moisture so provided they're peeing its ok.

Cats are not natural drinkers so don't worry too much about it, providing they're toiletting the way they should.

Now please pack kitten in 2nd photo is bag and ship to me please..  :naughty:

OMG I'm in love they are soooo cute.

As Ruth says I wouldn't worry too much about them not drinking much.  If you want you can try a different bowl (cats don't like drinking from things if they can see their own reflection in the bowl apparently) so a white china bowl is preferable to a dark coloured one!

But as long as they are peeing I'm sure they are fine.

Rhiannon, your little babies are sooooo gorgeous!  I wouldn't be able to leave them alone.  :evillaugh:  They look happy, healthy and full of mischief - exactly how you want your cats to be.

Pet Insurance.  This one crops up often, and the pet insurance premiums vary because of so many different factors that it's really best to shop around and to see what's the very best cover you can get for your money.  Some policies have a limit on what they will pay out - ie, ours won't pay out for dental treatment, and won't pay out more than £1,000 for any one illness (I won't make that mistake again) whereas some will insure against an illness for the whole lifetime of the policy.

We're with Petplan for Tess, and they've been okay although they are a bit pricey.  Am with Petsafe for Paddy.  They were cheap initially, especially as he was a senior kittizen when I first took their policy on, but because they put a ceiling on how much they'll cover for an illness I shot myself in the foot a bit with that one!

i will do my research online tonight for insurance, thanks.

tepe's bottom was hanging over the edge of the litter tray this morning whilst i was making my porridge...nice

he was meowing loads, i think  they are struggling with the wood based litter, i will go back to the previous one.  i was trying out different ones, one tray with normal gravel type one and the other with a wood based one, they have only been doing number 1's in the wood one so back to the normal, also i ran out of the the normal one so had to top that tray up with wood and tepe struggled.

just out of interest do you use for kitten's.

i hate leaving them to go to work but on tuesdays i am able to go home at lunch so it will only be a few hours before i see them again, they are currently wrestling each other.

they have their jab tomorrow, eek!

I use Direct Line, and would change but since Lexy's cystitis and bladder stones are covered under this one I can't move. Its a bit pricey but I would rather keep her comfortable and know I can pay for her treatment.

Petplan has a good rep, and so does Axa I think (or I might be confusing things). If you do a search on the forum for Insurance you will probably find a few threads that have run which gives a good indicator of which ones to use.

I would only say that look for one that offers the pay out x amount per year per illness rather than per illness only.  Most will pay out £6000 per illness per year.. that's worth it.

:evillaugh:  But is a very cute little bottom!    ;D

I tried a few for Paddy and his brother when they were younger.  Flynn would use any kind, he didn't mind, but Paddy prefers the clumping style of litter, so now I tend to stick with Catsan.  There are a few people here who swear by a thing called chick crumb (I think!) which is also supposed to be excellent, but again it might be trial and error to see which your boys prefer.

Bet they'll be brave little soldjas when they go for their jabs.  :)

Aha - posted at the same time as Aunty Roof!

thank you for the advice i have done a bit of researc and tesco does look good but have not agreed to anything yet, still going to look around.

i take them for their first jabs this afternoon, eek!

i am using catsan (not hygiene) because it is so fine they think it is funny to flick loads on the floor because it scatters everywhere and they chase it...contantly sweeping up and they jump in and out of the dust pan then start wrestling again

also tepe was lying in the tray playing with a ball when i got home today, cheeky monkey

Mine have a cheap fur mouse that they both love. Everytime I get it out for them one grabs it and runs for the covered tray. Safety I think because everytime the other kitten trys to enter they get greeted by a very loud growl and a light biff teehee. I've has to hand wash it a couple of times now sinced its always covered in used litter

Sooooooooooo proud of my furbabies  :Luv:  they were so good at the vets.

i put there carrier in the kitchen this morning with the door open so they could play in it then this afternnon i put their blanket in it and they happily got in it fell asleep and off we walked to the vets, floss was quite the 'cool cat' didn't even flinch with the jab but tepe was quite distressed but soon got over it, they went back in the carrier whilst i was paying and booking the next one,  they had fallen asleep again! hee hee

the vet and the nurse couldn't believe they were the same kittens, really healthy and a lot bigger and very content not like last tuesday.

Zooplus: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/cj/shop/cats  (if you use this link ... of click on the ad at the bottom of the page ... purrs will get commission ... you also get 10% off your first order  ;) )

Tigerino nuggies does seem expensive but it last for ages, clumps well and keeps smells to nothing.  You can read reviews of all the products on the site.

woke up this morning, went downstairs to feed them etc but unfortunately one or both of them was sick in the night, the reason i think it could be both is cause it was in a few different places in the kitchen, if it was just one i think it could have been tepe as he wasn't his usual 'round my feet' self. on the bright side they both went nuts over their breakfast and inhaled the lot!

should i ring the vets just to check that it's nothing to worry about? cause just thinking it may have something to do with their jabs yesterday.... or just keep an eye on them?
i hope they are ok today when i am at work.

i bumped into the vet nurse who we saw yesterday on my walk home to feed the kittens at lunchtime, i spoke to her about it and she said it is prob because of the jab but keep an eye on them and if they are quite unresponsive and stop eating call them.

i feel loads better now i have spoken to her.

just popped home to feed them and they seem to have not left any presents for me!

the catsan litter i though was rubbish cause when wet it practically welded itself to the bottom of the tray and i had to physically had to scrape the bottom of the tray everytime and  it just went everywhere so i changed to co-op own brand until this new one arrives, i must admit the co-op one is really good, no smells, clumps really well and is pink so you can see exactly where they pee. looking forward to seeing how this new one is.

i have taken away all their food tonight, no wet no dry only a water bowl on the floor, wish me luck, also i have finished the sensitive cat food, so i mixed the last sachet with a sachet of their normal food so i hope they do't get upset tummies cause i have had to change back to their normal one after having 2 days of sensitive one. soon find out!

they met their daddy on friday and they got on really well, mike has eft now so i took a picture of them having a cuddle before they left....

i mixed their last sachet of the RC sensitivity food with one of their normal sachets last night and they had some last night and this morning and that hasn't effected them either which i am pleased about also.

Did any of you see the Documentary on Animal Planet on Chernobyl: Life in the Danger Zone...? it was great, it was all about how nature has carried on after 20 years even though everything is radioactive, the main part of the documentary was following a family of cats, it was amazing and i it was really quite emotional.  i hope i wasn't the only one to see this.

not that actual one but i have made one like that, that picture was off google images, i always forget to take pictures of my decent looking cakes & desserts. i googled chocolate, strawberry, cream cake and that popped up and it looks just like on i made for my sisters birthday in feb, she is normally the one who makes everyone's (in our little family, not the world!) birthdays cakes but it was my turn this year, she loved it but her hubby was in her bad books cause he said she should make one and she didn't like him saying that.

i love baking but i was putting on loads of weight so had put them on hold for a bit, i have a rayburn and it's a dream to cook/bake with.

ooh that looks even yummier! chocolate is my fave!i just looked the cake picture i posted, it was off a website called Laura's cakes or something like that so there was no recipie. i will dig out mine, off the top of my head....i made 3 normal/basic sponge cakes with cocoa powder in sandwich tins the recipie said to slice one deep one into 3 but i am definately not that talented, sliced strawberries on each layer and it said to whisk double cream but i always cheat and use extra thick double cream which is soo thick and heavy, perfect i do always add a little bit of icing sugar purely to sweeten it but only a little. then it is really as simple as it looks, layer it up and cover it with cream as well (at this point you will understand why i buy extra thick cream and not beat it myself) occasioally i have crushed up merange nests (don't know the spelling, how awful) and mixed it in the last bit of cream that goes on the top.   personally i don't have that sweet of a tooth, (believe it or not) so i hardly ever use butter icing unless it is for someone else i generally use cream or cream cheese with icing sugar. BBC good food is the best place for cakes and bakes i get a lot of my ideas from there and adapt them for what need/want/crave!!!!!

this is my all time fave cake to eat and make, it is soooo easy

 Pineapple Cake
10oz Margarine (Stork)
8 oz Sugar (normal white)
14 oz Self raising flour
4 eggs
1 large tin of crushed pineapple (drained) can normally only be found in morrissons or sainsbury's, or blend up your own
1 large tin of pineapple chunks (drained)
4 oz Glazed cherries (halved, I use the whole tub otherwise it's a waste)

Cream the margarine with the sugar
Add the beaten eggs with few spoonfuls of flour (if it looks like its curdling add more flour)
stir
Add the cherries and pineapple
stir
then add the rest of the flour.

Fill 2 loaf tins already greased

Bale at 160 oc for 45- 60 Min's

Hope this makes some sort of sense. The recipe has been passed on to me so all the fancy words have been taken out.

They love to dig in fine clay because its lovely litter, when i first got lola & milly i tried wood pellets and they didnt dig - they spent the least amount of time as possible in the tray whilst looking really narked off!

You mention elsewhere about soiling away from the tray, did this happen when you changed the litter?
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: toothfairy on July 23, 2008, 20:49:43 PM
it was all my fault, sorry Sue!  :wish:

i don't think it was them avoiding the tray i think it was until my tigerino arrived i had to use a co-op own brand instead as everywhere else was closed etc at first i thouht it was quite good but err no rubbish, i think it was lack of odour control, or maybe one of them over shot the tray slightly, after washing kitchen floor and putting in the new litter seems good so far, fingers crossed x

BTW they are having a blast running up and down the stairs.

my kitchen looked like it was covered in snow when i got up this morning!
when the litter is wet and clay-like it is sticking on their paws and i am finding lumps of clay around the kitchen, is this normal with this litter???
hopefully they will soon learn not to stand in their mess, i hope.

It is when they stand in it   what also sucks about clumping clay is when they run in from the garden with wet feet to use the tray it sticks up their legs which they then shake off everywhere when they have finished  :tired:

I hope everyone's furbabies are ok, F&T are fab, real cuties and really coming in to their own, OH and i were sat on the kitchen floor with them on Saturday night and floss was on my lap and tepe on OH's lap, tepe and i fell asleep and OH said that floss stared at me the whole time, didn't take his eyes off me, OH said it was like he was watching over me...bless my little boy's (&OH of course).

Gosh, you can see changes in them already!  See they still like the culinary delights of your kitchen - wine rack, plate rack, spice rack....... :evillaugh:

With regard to your sister, are you thinking in terms of risk during her pregnancy?  I think that provided scrupulous hygiene is followed, wearing rubber gloves when changing the litter and having a good scrub afterwards, maybe with some spirit gel or antbacterial should be sufficient but I'm sure there'll  be others on here with direct experience who can answer this for you.

Title: Re: The kittens have arrived

The problem lies in old cat poop (over 24hours old) so regular removal and good hygiene is the way to go. Gardening also exposes you but no one ever blames that, always the cats! In terms of cats suffocating babies, a cot net will save the worry  ;D
Hope your sister doesnt get talked out of keeping her cat, many midwives, doctors and health vistors are anti cat and have allsorts of myths to tell people  >:(

can i give the kittens tuna from a tin? i only eat tinned tuna with spring water so there it is not in brine of oil.

i gave them some chicken and they loved it and i had cod the other day and gave them a tiny bit and they seemed to enjoy it, not even upset tummies.

also just a quickie, can i bath them? cause i have seen cat shampoo in the shops but have no idea if i should bath them.  they are not dirty just though they might benefit from a good wash i always think their paws seem dirty i do try and wipe their paws with a damp cloth and i do brush them every night before bed.

what do you think?

OMG haven't they grown  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

Re: the tuna ... as long as it's not in brine they can have it as an occasional treat no problem.

Re: Bathing ... yes you can bathe them but it shouldn't be done too often as it washes all the natural oils out of their coat.  I tend to bath my lot about twice a year when they start moulting hair everywhere and brushing just doesn't seem to be working.  You need to make sure you are well prepared.  I have found it's a good idea to make sure both kittens are in the bathroom (door locked).  Lay a large towel on the floor.  make sure you have the top off the shampoo before you start.  run the bath and have enough water in it that your little ones can stand up and the water comes upto their tummies ... warm water ... NOT hot and NOT cold.  pick you little one up and place in the bath (facing away from you) hold them by the scruff of the neck (it's easier to control them this way) then off you go.  Make sure you rinse all the shampoo off them well then lift out plonk on the towel wrap up and give a good rub.  One down one to go.

I have found using a shower is a recipe for disaster as cats really DO NOT like showers but I have never had a problem washing any cat (even some really fiesty toms) in the way I described above.

Good luck.

Cats dont need bathing unless they are a) covered in something yucky like oil or b) have coats that need it eg. persians

Tuna, i compared tuna in oil, brine and spring water and they all had the same salt content!  its easily addictive so as a small treat its ok but not a regular thing
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: toothfairy on August 25, 2008, 00:28:14 AM
well they are neither a or b so nevermind...maybe on their birthday!!!! they certainly loved the tuna, was gone in 2 seconds, they have had a run of the house for the whole day today and for the first time today they have been brave enough to jump on the sofa for cuddles and walk accross the lap top and press keys, so helpful!

does anyone have any thoughts on kitten's deciduous (baby) teeth, will i see them come out? what age? cleaning?

i know that in humans baby teeth are effectively pushed out by the adult teeth and roots are resorbed naturally, that is why you see children's teeth without roots when they fall they are just the crown of the tooth, is this what kitten's teeth will be like?

i am sure that i should already know this quite ashamed that i do not.

for those of you who have been following the boy's progress over the months...they are doing really well and really coming in to their own, i think they are very happy and contented and everyone who meets them falls in love with them, but they are mine all mine!!!!  :Luv2:

but they are really freaked out when there is more than 2 people i the house they are fine with me and OH but add an extra couple of people and they are petrified and i feel awful for putting them in the situation. any tips?

I've got a real soft spot for these two beautiful boys  :Luv2:  Gorgeous pics  :Luv2:

As for the teeth, the boys had double teeth until one day the double set was no longer there.  They used to chew the tear off strips from Bozita cartons and there were tiny spots of blood on there but other than that the teeth just disappeared  :shify:  I did find a front fang and put it 'somewhere safe' - unfortunately I have no idea where that was and I've since moved and the tooth didn't appear!

As for being frightened of visitors, as they don't go outside their world is you and OH so when new people are introduced into their environment ie your house they're bound to be scared.  My boys are the same, if it's someone they don't know they are very wary and will often hide, if it's someone they've met a few times they are normally fine with them after a few minutes and if it's someone they know well they are just their normal selves with them.

Izzy tooth feel out last week, there has a lot of blood and I panicked, luckily a found the tooth so knew where the blood was from. I've put it in  a tricket box for safe keeping. As your boys were born on the same day as Izzy and Bella I guess their's will be falling out now too!

As for the ping pong in the bath game I'm soooo gonna try that tonight!!

thank you for all the get well kisses, they are sending kisses back xxxx xxxx
 :Luv: :Luv:

i have decided to put collars on them, we are in the middle of buying a house and if i choose them to go outside or they run off i wouldfeel happier with them having collars because the will look like they belong to someone then.  i would like them to get use to wearing a collar whilst they are still young...also one of patients said not to fuss around with it just put it on and leave them to it, don't put it on for 10 mins a day to break them in gently...which is what i had intended to do!  :-:

well, how  :censored: do i fell now? i put them on the boys and they fiddled with them a little then got really confused but the bell tinkling not realising it was attched to them, it was quite funny actually to watch them looking all confused, bless  :Luv2:
it gets worse.....floss started to make a funny noise and i look over and he ad manaed to get his lower jaw stuck in his collar and couldn't get it out and was totally freaking out and wheezing like he couldn't catch his breath, he was really panicking and i was crying, it was such a horrible sounf and he would nit stay still so i could take it off instead everytime i tried he was wriggling that much i was making it worse so in the end i cut it off,  :censored: knows how i managed not to cut floss open with us both having a panic attack.

he was so traumatised so i took tepe's off aswell (at this point he was starting to get quite wrestless with it on), now all evening floss has sat on his own in the kitchen looking really sorry ofr himself, i feel awful!

how on earth am i going to cope next month when i take them to be snipped and chipped?

I know the feeling.  Being first time cat owner slave  :evillaugh:  makes me a bit overprotective too.

About snipping. Vet told me it's best to do it when they are 3-6 month old. 3 definitely seems too early, I would leave at least until 6. What age are your kittens gonna be?
Title: Re: The kittens have arrived
Post by: toothfairy on October 24, 2008, 18:08:02 PM
5 months they will be, they definately have 'them' aswell lol  my vet said anything after 5 months as long as they have dropped, which they definately have. also we live in a rented house at the moment and i know we would loose our rather large deposit if any of them sprayed!

6months is the latest it should be done pyschopunk, its not unheard of for 4 month olds to come into heat. Its safe to do surgery on small animals these days and if it could stop alot of these 'accidental litters'  it would make the UK a better place.

TF, neutering doesnt stop cats from being able spray! It means they wont spray to attract a mate but if stressed they can still physically spray urine.

Thanks for info Millys Mum! I think we will do it when he's gonna be 5 month old, but anyway I will make sure my kitten doesn't go outside before he's neutered and microchipped.

Rufus is 22 weeks and he was neutered very recently. He is absolutely fine and you would never know he'd been through an anaesthetic if you weren't told. It is a really safe procedure that they can cope with from 16 weeks old. (CP recommendations) I have even known a successful castration to be done at 12 weeks with no ill effects. It's no issue as long as the testicles have dropped. The only reason I waited til 22 weeks was because I would not have been able to drop him off and pick him up in the weeks before because of work. Get them in ASAP and they will be happy kitties who will be able to venture into the big wide world without fear of unwanted litters or testosterone-driven fighting or roaming.

the boys had their little 'op' today and they are just fine, they practically inhaled their dinner so they must be fine! :briggin:

apart from today they have been really healthy for a few weeks, difinately took a few weeks to get that virus out of their system...my poor boys.

the VN's were amking a real fuss over them when i took them in and in true Floss and Tepe fashion they were lapping it up!  :evillaugh:

HI All

It's been a while but i am back on purrs after a looong absence- had loads going on (good and not so good)

thought i would give an update on the boys...

the boys have been with me for a year and a month now and i couldn't even imagine life without them...they now go outside to play i don't think they go very far because they pop off for an hour then come back then off again and come back etc... they are so cute bless em'

they are so clingy at night now, more than they ever have been before, they sleep right up next tpo me and hardly move til it's time to get up, i love it an wouldn't have it any other way.

they love me leaving the utility room tap dripping in the day, they can play and drink at the same time...hours of fun.

one of the boys decided to bring a present in the house for me, on Thursday i came home to feathers everywhere and a bloody fleshy bit but no bird!!! eek!  i thought i will either find it when it starts to smell (not nice i know but i just couldn't find the bloddy thing anywhere (excuse the pun) or they have taken it back outside.

but yesterday i came home to a room full of flies and i said to OH that this bird is still here somewhere so we picked up the sofa and there the little mite was (not so little though, it was actually quite a size!)

pics to follow!
