Title: Riley's just been stung...again... to infinity!
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on May 23, 2008, 20:40:50 PM
I've just noticed that Riley's front right paw is really swollen.  It's not bothering him in the slightest and he is still putting full weight on it and using it to try and hook the door open but it's very large in comparison to his other one.  He lets me touch it without making a sound so I can only think that he's been stung by a bee or wasp.

I've never had a cat with a sting before, does he need to go to the vets or will it just go down naturally without harming him?

I have no idea, Helen. I didn't want to just read and not respond though, because you'll be worried.

Have you tried looking it up online?

Me I would keep an eye on things and react immediately if there are any problems. Stings might cause allergic reactions like swelling of soft tissues causing breathing difficulties, but that is rare. Keep your eye on him, and if you see any problems like that get to the Vet ASAP. If not, just see how he goes ... If he is no uncomfortable, it should be fine.

Could also be an abscess coming up ... another option to keep an eye out for.

 :thanks: JS & Jo

Don't think it's an abcess, they're very gentle with their playfighting and he won't come into contact with other cats as garden is catproofed.  He's still trying to get outside (they have to come in after tea), jumping up onto the desk and rubbing around for cuddles but it is very swollen  :scared:

I've been trying my best, every time I see a wasp in the garden that's caught his eye I run out and distract him so he leaves it alone.  He's just used his scratching post and scratched using both paws but it really is huge.  As I type this he's just jumped on the top level of the climber and started playfighting Lu!

another thought. Keep an eye on the temperature of the paw. If it starts to feel cooler, then go to the vet. Swelling in such a complex area as a paw can lead to loss of circulation, and necrotic deterioration. Don't fret, it is unlikely, but do keep an eye on him.

Sounds like a bee sting to me ... I remember when Zephyr got stung is little paw and wrist all swell up to twice normal size.  I checked there was no sting in it and as he was still walking on it .. his breathing was ok and apart from the swelling and his sad little face everything seemed normal ... I left it.  By the following morning the swelling had gone down and he was outside chasing bees and wasps again!

I would keep an eye on him and see how he is in the morning poor baby!

Just rang the vets...

They have gone over to the dark side and the hospital is the host for vets now out of hours.  The vets now lady was very helpful and said that as long he is still acting his normal self and doesn't seem in any discomfort then I should just keep an eye on him and take him to the normal vets in the morning.

His paw feels quite hot, my poor little boy.  If that was me who had a sting on my foot I'd be crying and limping but he is such a brave little soldier  :Luv:

Aw poor baby....my lot have never had one thankfully!  :scared:

I know CC's Harry had been stung before and the vet gave her piriton but dont know if it was an animal or human anti histamine?
Title: Re: Serious post - stung paw - do I need to go to the emergency vets?
Post by: ccmacey on May 23, 2008, 21:47:08 PM
He should be ok, there would be swelling as there would be with humans. The vets normally worry when the sting has been near or in the mouth, it could cause breathing difficultys as it could make the airways close with swelling. Every time I take Harry vet gives him half a piriton, they tell me to give him the other half if the swelling is still there in the morning.

Both Harry and Macey were stung in the lip last year I phoned the vets and they said only to bring them if they have a drastic change but usually the swelling has gone down after a few hours.

I'm at the vets every summer because of this when will they learn

You could phone the vets and ask if you could give him piriton with it being his first time

Thanks CC, I don't have Piriton in the house so no point ringing back but I'll ask the normal vet tomorrow as it will be handy to keep some in if he's going to be in the wars regularly.

My first thought was  :omg: what's happened as it is so big compared to his other one.  When I twigged on he'd been stung I thought to myself if he was a child with a sting on the hand or foot behaving completely normally would I rush them to A&E if the doctors was shut? - the answer was No but that didn't stop me running round the house like a woman possessed, rushing to get out of my PJ's and grab his basket from the cupboard just in case!

Just got back from the vets with him, the swelling went down overnight but the 'poorly paw' was still slightly larger than his other one.  He's had an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic injection just in case.  He was so well behaved at the vets, they were running behind so there was a bit of a wait, I was rubbing his tummy through the porthole and he fell asleep!

The vet said some very nice things about him so I am an even prouder Mum than I was before  :)

Poor Riley, I hope he is feeling all better now xxx  Raffiki got stung on the last Bank Holiday and I was in a right panick - after lots of TLC he was fine and the vet just told me to monitor him and luckily the swelling went sown quite quickly - he stunk of the vinegar I put on it

Spike got stung last 'summer' and he got a pea sized swelling under his, took a few days to completely go away. He had piriton too.
Title: Re: Serious post - stung paw - do I need to go to the emergency vets?
Post by: Tiggy's Mum on May 25, 2008, 20:39:25 PM
I asked about the Piriton and the vet said the dosage is 2mg per cat which is half a Piriton so I'm going to get some in just in case.  Obviously as CC said if the sting is anywhere near the mouth/throat then it's straight to the vets  :car:

Where was Spike's sting MM?  Riley's foot was literally double the size   He looked like a one footed shire horse, the weird thing is that he was still using it completely normally.  He used his scratching post with both feet and was trying to hook the door open with it   The anti-inflammatory jab did it's job pretty quickly as this morning it was back to normal.

He's done it again! Same paw, think he must be right pawed when it comes to insect catching.  Yet again he has chosen a Friday evening after the vets has closed to cath his bee or wasp  :innocent: Have taken the vets advice and given him half a Piriton in a dairylea blob so will see how he gets on.  Poor Riley  :(

My kitten has been stung 4 times in 3 weeks, he must be really thick.  Mostly on his paw which swells alot, does not bother him because he still puts weight on it, and eating & purring, so I just monitor him closely.  Like you I was very concered when he first did it, but its natural for it to swell, its histamine that the body producers in response to the sting, so I think its the bodys natural defence against the sting. an allergic reaction whould happen straight away.  However last time he got stung on his chin, I was concerned for his air away getting blocked, luckily it did not develop.

I hope he will learn his lesson!!

His Royal Riley-ness would like to thank everyone for their concern  :thanks:  His paw is back to normal now, am really glad I got the Piriton in on the vets advice after the last time.  He's had lots of medicinal kitty milk which helped take his mind off the fact that he looked like a one footed shire horse  :evillaugh:  Again I couldn't believe how brave he was, he was using his paw completely normally and rolling around for tummy rubs  :Luv2:

Third time unlucky!  This time he hasn't gone for a Friday night but a Saturday of a Bank Holiday weekend, think he's timing it so he doesn't have to go to the vets  :evillaugh:

He came in a few minutes ago, rubbed himself up against my legs then stretched out for a tummy rub.  When I started rubbing his tummy his feet were completely normal but by the time I had finished the left one had swollen up so he must have only just been stung - I'm staring to think he doesn't feel pain judging by the way he behaves!

Fourth time unlucky!  A few minutes ago the biggest dragonfly I have ever seen was flying in and out of our garden, Lu was chasing it and Riley did a super mid air flip but luckily for them both they missed it.  Seconds later Riley was pouncing on the lavender plants and got stung by a bee

Chilli has been stung a couple of times. First time was last year, she was chasing a wasp, next thing we knew she had screamed into the house done a full circuit through every room and came screaming back out again. Think she was trying to run away from the sting. Then she licked her leg like mad for a bit so that's where the sting was. She felt very sorry for herself for the rest of the day, just went to bed, I checked her regularly, no swelling, just a grumpy cat.

Second time was a couple of months ago. A bumble bee had found its way into my flat and Chilli spotted it so again picked a fight. Well I thought they only had one sting but apparently not, it got her paw so she flicked it off, it then attached itself to her side and apparently continued stinging as she was going mental trying to get it off, I couldn't get near to help! Again, no swelling or any other symptons.

I'm hoping that's the last time she plays with the stingy things. Dave has yet to encounter them.

Riley never makes a sound or even seems to notice that he's been stung, he carries on completely as normal  :-:  He must be very thick as that's 4 times now since he started going outside in May -  Lu has never been stung in that same period of time!  I just went out and there was a very lethargic wasp crawling around in front of him on the decking, I bet that has stung him too   He's had half a Piriton as advised by the vet so hopefully if he has been stung again it won't swell up.

Halfway through typing this I spotted him eyeing something up in the rockery... another wasp

Dancer there is a difference between the stings of a wasp and a bee. A bee can only sting once and leaves its sting behind and for a human you need to get the sting out, dont know about a cat.  The bee dies once it has stung.

A wasp however will keep on stinging and living cos its got nothing to lose but a bee will only attack if its threatened.

Helen how do you know if he has been stung if he doesnt react  :shify: :shify:

It's amazing that he is not crazy in pain.  I will call you Riley the Super Cat from now on!   Riley, I hope you have learned your lesson this time and stop batting around bees and wasps! :Luv2:

He is indeed a Supercat  :) I actually saw him get stung yesterday and he didn't react at all, I called him in and saw that his foot was starting to go so game him a tablet.  Today  it was that big when I first saw him and he was behaving completely normally - running, jumping, using the scratching post, trying to knock the treat out of my hand with it, rolling over for tummy rubs.  If I didn't know better I'd say he didn't feel pain but he got his foot stuck in a fireguard when he was a baby and squealed like a wild animal.

I took him to the vets the first time it happened as I'd never had a cat that's been stung before so wanted to be on the safe side, he's been stung 5 times now so I'm glad I asked about the Piriton.  Obviously if he ever got stung around his mouth or throat I'd take him straight to the vets but it seems to only ever be on his paws.

It's started already  :tired: He caught a few bees/wasps the other day but was lucky to avoid being stung. I screamed at him, whilst racing outside like a loony, to stop him eating them as I'm really worried he'll get stung in his throat/mouth.

He's just come trotting upstairs and flopped on the bed with another 'comedy paw'.  I've given him 1/2 a Piriton as advised by the vet and he is still running around like normal, he's a bit miffed that he's not allowed back outside that's all!

Worth checking the date on your box of Piriton Helen, I think they do have an expiry date and it sounds like you might be getting through them again this year.

Luckily mine have never been stung but having read through this post again I think I better get some piriton in just to be on the safe side.

Thanks Lesley, just checked and it's Jan 2011 so plently of time left for him to get stung and use it  :tired:  The dosage is 2mg which is half a Piriton, obviously I'd zoom him down to the vets if he got stung anywhere around the mouth/throat but luckily so far it's always been his feet.

He decided that he better have a little rest in his radiator bed to help him recuperate  :Luv2:

Wasps are little butter, when they come to the end of thier life cycle, they will gladly Sting you for nothing
Like Bazsmum says, Wasps can sting...again....and again....and again  >:( although I have only ever been stung once
when I was seven yrs old, and that was because I was walking through Heather with My walddy beets on, and one fell
inside them

Bee's on the otherhand are a lot Nicer, its Kinda Ironic, because Its a death sentance, When a bee stings you it's stinger
stays in your skin when it pulls away because the stinger is barbed. The stinger pulls all the insides out of the bee and they
die. Bees only sting once because of this and they know what happens so a bee stinging you feels threatend or provoked.

Now this is gonna sound weird but I will actually stroke a bee's back, whereas wapses well....One was chasing me once (as they do!) and I whacked it with a rolled up magazine....The head flew off and the wasps body flew away for a few seconds!  :scared:

I know the nerves are still going etc, its a horrid sight though!  :scared:

Oh I hate wasps but love the big bumble bees and have always wanted to stroke one, We have some really huge ones round at the moment.

Trouble is I have probs if stung by a bee, well maybe certain bees and ended up a bit ill in London. I was stung here a couple of years ago and obviously a different strain of bee and had no problem, although NHS direct insisted that I see my GP immediately and even got a doctor from their side to ring me.

I know that behaviour very well.  My Ginger used to catch wasps and eat them - it scared me witless and I did everything I could to stop her but thankfully she never came to any harm from it. She obviously didn't swell up the way Riley does.  Hope he's learned his lesson this time

reading this post again, just had a reminisce, coming into my Living room one day, I was confronted by the sight of Misty sitting in
the middle of the Living room, watching Hamish (The Brave) standing on the back rest of a chair, stretching up, and Coyly playing
with a HUGE angry Bumble Bee that was constantly Head butting the Window   I ran and got a glass tumbler and placed
it over the bee, slipping a piece of paper over the glass, and releasing the Bee outside
I was just laughing thinking about it, Claws fully extended, being as carfull as He could, with the odd occasional quick withdraw

I don't really know whether Ginger's antics resulted in her being stung or not - I just know she never seemed any worse for the experience.  Its hard to believe she could eat wasps without them fighting back but maybe she had a knack.

I hope that with all these stings he will start to build up an immunity......

Whilst many people do become less sensitive to stings with repeated exposure, the opposite can be true and some people (usually bee keepers ) have been known to develop severe allergy leading to anaphylactic shock.  (Of course a few unfortunate people develop this type of allergy after only one sting). I'm sure you have to have  helluva a lot of stings though for this to happen.  I've no idea if the same is also true for wasp stings (although I would think so).

Poor Riley I do hope he either learns to give the nasty stingy things a wide berth or beomes desensitised SOON  :Luv2:

Only yesterday I was thinking how it was ages since Riley has been stung  :tired:

I always get them in before it starts to go dark but they do like it when the sun starts to go down and they get all crazy chasing each other so I decided to let them have 5 more minutes - at this stage his paw is completely normal. Seconds later I looked out of the window to see Riley's paw the size of a balloon  :tired:

He's just had his tablet in a slice of ham then sprinted back outside chasing Lu - this boy feels no pain  I also have a very slim chance of getting them in before it goes completely dark as his tummy is full of ham and Lu is a little  :censored:

He needs urgent help, Helen. :-:  The sooner you get him into rehab and let the withdrawal take its hold the better. Imagine in the winter when the buzzies are fewer and far between. Take control now!

 :tired: ... and again!

He was so sweet bless him - I was cleaning the kitchen floor and he poked his head round the door as he always goes into the kitchen for a tablet when he gets stung.  I was shooing him out as the floor was wet with chemicals but he persevered and kept poking his little head round the door, I then noticed his not so little foot and gave him his 'fix' for the day  :naughty:

Now, if he can learn that the kitchen is the "pill place" and knows if he gets stung he needs some help WHY cant he learn to leave bees and wasps alone ?  :(

Give him a gentl hug from me  :Luv2:

:thanks: WC, gentle hug dispensed  :) He's actually not quite as clever as it sounds and has learnt that the kitchen is the "Webbox treat" place  :evillaugh: I had to take the Webbox and a knife into the living room as the floor was wet with the chemicals and didn't want him to touch the wet floor, he was batting the knife with his poorly paw as I wasn't cutting the webbox open as quickly as he liked  :-:

Well about half an hour ago Lu caught what looked like a slim wasp (could have been a 'fake' one though if you know what I mean) - I shrieked at him and he moved his feet releasing it and the 'wasp' flew out of the back door.  Twenty minutes later Riley's foot was swelling up so maybe he caught Lu's, very angry, wasp  :naughty:

BM  - I don't think there's a nest nearby, I thought I had one over my back door but had a visit from pest control and they were bees - not sure when 'bee season' is but haven't seen any bees round the door for ages  :shify:

I think he's more addicted to the Webbox treat that's moulded round the Piriton to be honest  :evillaugh:

It's started early this year, poor Riley has just been stung again  :( After what happened to Lottie's poor Minxy last year it's really worrying as what I viewed as an annoyance before could actually be fatal  :(

He won't take his 1/2 Piriton either, I tried to hide it in Dairylea, then Defurrum treats then Webbox but because the bare tablet touched his tongue with the failed Dairylea attempt he could obviously tase the bitterness and refused all other efforts  :tired:

Just a phone pic but you can see how swollen it is just a few minutes after happening...

He's really rather obsessed with the stingy things isn't he? I've only seen one so far this year! I wonder if there's anything you could put in your garden to deter the, plants or otherwise?
Title: Re: Riley's just been stung...again... to infinity!

The only plants I have that are bee attracting (not sure if wasps are attracted too?) are some lavendar plants but they're not even flowering yet.

I've just managed to get the half piriton down him hidden in some applewood cheese that I had in the freezer so hopefully the swelling won't last as long now. Poor boy :care:

Sorry to hear Riley has been in the wars again Helen  :(  Poor little man.  Hope the swelling has gone now.

There do seem to be some very large bees about don't there?  I'm quite sure Groucho was stung last week as I found him playing with a poor bee and he kept shaking one paw for a few minutes afterwards.  The only piriton tabs I found in cupboard were well out of date.  I rang vets and was told to bring him in if I noticed a swelling.  He has quite chunky paws/legs and I didn't notice any swelling so didn't do anything and he was OK.   I will add some piriton tablets to shopping list ..

Sending a  to Riley

:thanks: everyone, it was still massive when I went to bed last night, I think because I didn't get the half Piriton into him quickly enough,  and had resigned myself to a vet visit if it hadn't gone down but luckily for Riley it is back to almost normal size now  :)

Looks like I'll need to be stocking up on the Piriton again too  :tired:

Poor Riley, glad he is better today :)

Esco got stung inside his mouth last summer, I found the sting and pulled it out then gave him a piriton. It didn't go down so he had to go to the vet that evening for a steroid shot. His poor face was so swollen (bit like mine last night - but that's a whole other story which only facebook people will know about lol!)
