Title: SPECIAL APPEAL - Please Help me save Samui's eye
Post by: Samui on March 05, 2008, 12:05:18 PM
Hi everyone

I need your help please.  Please read the below email, if you know of anyone that can help please let me know.  The cost of the operation is: ZAR 13585.00 / GBP 860.00

Hi all

My name is Samui, I am an 8 year old domestic house cat.  About 8 years ago I was born with only one eye and ended up at TEARS (The Emma Animal Rescue Society).  One Saturday all the other kittens and I were put up for adoption in N1 City Mall to find homes.  As the day went by the cage started to get empty but I was so confident that I was going to find a home.  Late that afternoon I was the only kitten left, nobody wanted a "one eyed cat".  Then just before we had to leave I was taken out of the cage, a lady holding me tight against her chest, I looked at her and it was "love at first sight"... she didn't mind my one eye.

Now 8 years later I am asking for your help.  A week ago I developed a corneal ulcer in my eye... now that wouldn't have been a major problem if I had two eyes but as you know I only have the one.  In less than 24 hours it grew 3 times the original size and the treatment I was on just didn't stop the ulcer.  Unfortunately it has now come down to having an eye graft to save my eye and this is a very expensive procedure.  My "mom" can't afford to have this done by herself and that is why we are asking for your help - in any way possible.

I have attached the doctor’s invoice and a photo of myself.  To be honest I have no idea how to go about this, but until I know more I am including my "moms" bank details if you can help to give any donation no matter how big or small (every little bit helps).

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

Samui

FOR ANY DONATION:Admin has kept details and taken off public forum for member protection.

Thanks everyone for all the prayers over the past week!  To save Samui's eye he needs to have this operation and unfortunately I can't afford this on my own.  He has given me so much love over the past 8 years and now that I have to be there for him it is really proving to be difficult, so please if you can help at all - help me to be there for him now.

Lana

Hi Milly

I am not a charity, just a "mum" wanting to find help.  If there is any way I can prove this is not a scam, please let me know how and I'll do it.

Please Samui post in the section for new members and tell us about yourself and cats and why you are posting as a new member asking for money in a post that I am very sorry to say, does look like the many scam emails we get.

I am very sorry to be so blunt and have pmed you. I am locking this thread to avoid confusion and hope to see you posting in the welcome to new members area with infomation about you and samui and where you live and your cat family.

Thank for joining Purrs

Title: SPECIAL APPEAL - Please Help me save Samui's eye
Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on March 06, 2008, 11:30:42 AM
Alrighty Peeps!

We are treating this as a special appeal outside of our normal annual fundraisers.

We know that Lana's first post might have put a few of you (us!) on the wary train, so we thought that if we were to consider helping Lana we needed to know as much about the gorgeous Samui as we could before we made a decision to help. As you know, we take very seriously any fundraising we do, and we verify the recipient of every single fundraising effort we have ever performed in the past. We thought it important that you knew, if we chose to assist in this that we have done everything we can to verify the funds are indeed going where they need to.

I asked a family friend in South Africa, who is Chairman of the Animal Anti Cruelty League http://www.aacl.co.za/ (as a courtesy for the help he gave me yesterday I am posting this link for anyone interested in seeing the good work done there) to help me verify the details provided by Lana. He knows Dr. Bauer the ophthalmic surgeon who performed the surgery on Samui and verified that the clinic is indeed the best in the region, and that Samui is in the clinic and is recovering from this surgery. The treatment is expensive and no other clinics in the area (which geographically speaking is fairly large) perform this type of surgery.  The clinic details can be found here: http://www.camc.co.za/

Lana gambled. She knew that it was either Samui losing his good eye and living his life blind, or having this surgery which would give him a chance at as normal a life as possible. Lana has taken all of her savings (R9,000 - about £583) and is paying that to the clinic today. The full cost of the bill, including the ICU costs will come to R13,585.04.

Lana is on a low wage, her monthly income is less than that of someone on minimum wage in the UK. She has come to us for help as she has exhausted avenues local to her to help her pay this. In essence she is desperate, and we have decided that whilst this is not a rescue case in the UK, we are going to try to help.

In her own words:

I know I gambled when i went ahead with the operation but I couldn't just leave it at that.  I would do anything for my cats, they really mean the world to me.  I know some people might think I am crazy for what I have done, but Samui is my sweetheart and he has always been there for me and it is difficult to explain that to someone.

I have just done the R9000.00 transfer to the Animal Eye Clinic but I don't regret one cent of it as money can't compare to what I feel for my "kids".  I can start building again on savings, but Samui needed the operation to save that eye and that is more important than anything else.  I can't begin to tell you how much this means to me that you are willing to help.  Thanks again for the trouble of verifying the story and for helping me.

Lana

The balance owed to the clinic is R4,585.04. This is roughly £296-300.  Any funds we might raise in this special appeal will be paid direct to the clinic. Lana is aware we might not be able to raise the full amount and she will have to make up the shortfall, however we are going to try.

Any help our members can offer is greatly appreciated. We already have our first anonymous donation in the pot, for which I am grateful.

We are using the Purrs PayPal account: purrs@purrsinourhearts.co.uk - Please use the reference: Samui. If anyone wishing to donate in a different form please let me or Tan know.

Thank you in advance to everyone, we hope to raise as much as we can to help Lana. Anyone who hasn't seen the pics of Samui, here you go. He is gorgeous!

Hi Everyone

I just want to thank each and everyone for helping me to help Samui - like I said I don't know how to begin to say thank you.  I'll keep you all updated on the progress Samui is making, and I'll try to get some pre-op and post-op pics.
I don't know what Sullivan is going to do with Samui back, because he was looking for Samui all over the house the first few days and he has become very talkative and usually he is very quiet and Samui is the talker, I am sure Samui is going to have some competition in that department when he gets home!

Thanks again everyone!!!!

Samui is indeed gorgeous and I appeal to all, as staff worked on this so hard yesterday, special thanks to Ruth, to even give a pound. Do not be embarassed how little you could help cos if only a couple of hundred members gave a pound the total will be almost there.  ;D

So please Purrs people ...................  :help: :donate2: :cuddle:

I am not rich right now but a small donation is being sent

Sure hon, you can actually go direct to www.paypal.com and send money from a debit or credit card. You don't need a paypal account, just a valid email address and card.

Just copy the address of who you are paying purrs@purrsinourhearts.co.uk and that is who you pay.

Thank you so much for your generosity.  :Luv:

Edited to add: oh yea. also what Gill said!! :evillaugh:

Hiya, I'd be happy to help out a little bit but can you pm me with the SA bank details as I'd rather pay in rands? Gary Bauer is the opthalmologist who sorted out my Swampy's eye in C'Town and I know that Clinic are very expensive. I can't do that much, but guess every little helps. Samui's lovely. Tell Gary to look after him properly!!

Sure thing, if you're transferring from an SA bank to another it will cost little for the transfer.  Will PM you the details, though if you could let me know the amount so we can ensure its accounted for in the total.

If we have a day tomorrow like we did today, we will be very fortunate.

Wait for it, you lovely people have helped us raise a whopping £150 today alone.

Thank you so very very much!  :Flowers:

Just wondered if the appeal could be cross-posted in general as I and I'm sure others sometimes unintentionally "ignore" some of the sections.

I am making a donation now - Good luck with Samui - I know it must have been difficult for you to ask but you quite rightly put him first when other people might have done otherwise - sending good wishes to you both

:thanks: to everyone that have made a donation so far!  I just logged on and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw what was raised yesterday.  I received two images of Samui's eye the day he arrived at the eye clinic, I don't know where or how to put them on here though?
You have all change made a difference in Samui's life and in mine.  Thanks to each and everyone!!!

Lana, email me the photos, I'll PM you my email address, and I'll post them for you.

We've hit £200!

Hi Everyone
These pics were taken the day I took Samui to the Eye Clinic.  The green colour you see is some sort of fluid they put into the eye, and it attaches itself to the growth (or this is how I understood it - hope I am correct).  The "bubble" on the eye is caused by the ulcer "eating" through the cornea.
I'll take some pics when I collect him tonight and I can post them on Monday!!!  Yes, he is coming home tonight!!!  This is all just so amazing!!!

Hi Mark

I am sure he'll make a speedy recovery with all the love and attention he'll be getting.  He won't have full vision yet, I think that takes a while, but at least he can still see.  He needs to go back for a check-up in 5 - 7 days from today, then I'll know more about how much of his vision has been restored.  x

Hi Everyone!

My boy is back home and it is so good to have him home.  He is doing well, don't think he even knows how "sick" he was.  I haven't taken pics of his eye yet, I need to find out from the Doctor if it is okay to do so.  To be honest I have no idea how to describe what it looks like other than what I think a skin-graft would look on someone.  It is still very red and the instructions I got from the Doctor said that with time it will be going more pink and then start to get clearer.  It is going to take 4 - 6 months to heal completely.  He can definately see at this stage, I don't know how much or how distorted it is, but he can see.  He is on 3 drops 4 x daily - I am not sure for how long.  His next appointment is Thursday or Friday.

I wish you could have seen Sullivan when we got home Friday night (we got back at around 23:50pm).  He was completely "out of his box" - running around following Samui everywhere.  Now the main thing is to try and keep Samui as calm and still as possilbe, but with Sullivan wanting to play it is quite difficult.

I am just so glad to have him back and that is in such a big way because of everyone here!!!  I did take some pics this weekend so if anyone can let me know how I can add it that would be great.

 :thanks:

Hi Lana and  :welcome: to Purrs,

I have only just caught up with this thread and have added a small donation to the appeal.  I hope Samui is now back home and makes a speedy recovery.

Hi Sam
Thanks for the welcome and the donation, it really means a lot!

Thanks for the donation Andrea!!!
I am sure he'll recover fully Sarah, at the moment he is coming to work with me everyday so I can keep an eye on him and give him the medication.  And unfortunately Sullivan wants to play with him so I have to be there to supervise the two and during the day I can't be there... But the cuddles at night between the two of them is just amazing!

Hello everyone..
I just got to work back from the Vet's.  He is very happy with Samui's eye.  The graft is "taking" well and I can reduce the drops and eye gel to twice a day.  He can start jumping and playing again (Sullivan is going to be so happy about that!!!  :) )  He wants to see Samui in 4 - 6 months time.  I almost started crying again when I got the news this morning that Samui's eye is looking good because I was so worried about "what if" and all that...
He took some photos of his eye so I just emailed him to ask if he can email it over to me.  I hope he'll send it so I can upload the images.  I'll definitely keep you all updated.

:thanks: to everyone who made a donation and who helped me to make this possible!  Samui can see because of what you all did for him (and Dr Bauer obviously  :) ).

Hi Sue
Samui asked me to give you a message; he thought about your "job offer" and has decided to decline.  He said he's very busy over here with trying to do some filing and this is already interfering with his "catnaps" but he said he'll definitely keep the offer in mind.  :evillaugh:

That's really great news Lana.

To update everyone on how the fundraising has gone this week, it's unbelievable that it's only been a week. We have raised £213 so far and after bank charges of £10 to transfer funds, if we were to transfer today, it will be roughly R3,240 we're helping pay towards the R4,585 left to pay for the vet.

Thank you everyone for all your donations. We're going to keep this open for another couple days for anyone else who still wishes to donate a little something.

You have all been fantastic, especially for a cause that is not a UK rescue, your kindness is very much appreciated by all of us.

 :Hello: everyone!
Okay, I got the pic from Doctor Bauer.  He took this yesterday when Samui went for his checkup.  If you are very squeamish - maybe you shouldn't look...
I'll try to update pics regularly so you all can share in the progress of his eye (I just need to find someone with a camera that can do closeup pics, but I'll find someone I am sure!).

And once again, a huge thanks to everyone for your :donate:'s!!!!

you can actually go direct to www.paypal.com and send money from a debit or credit card. You don't need a paypal account, just a valid email address and card.

Just copy the address of who you are paying purrs@purrsinourhearts.co.uk and that is who you pay.

Yes true, but he can definitely see - Samui and Sullivan played like two teenagers last night and this morning, running around, playing hide and seek.  Although Doctor Bauer said I can treat Samui like a "normal cat" again, I am still a bit scared to not interfere when they play, it can sometimes get a bit rough!  Today is his first day back home "alone".... I can't wait to get back home...

Heya all!
Just to let you know Samui is doing really well.  His eye looks much better and it looks as though it is starting to heal.  He is still on the medication but down to twice a day.  He's been playing like a kitten again, running around and jumping on everything and Sullivan not far behind him all the time!
I am still trying to keep him calm but that is something he doesn't want to do, just like a naughty child - but I let them have their fun up to a point before they get too rough.  He is still just indoors, don't want him to be outside in all the dust, etc.
Just glad my boy can see and that he doesn't have any pain anymore.
I'll definitely keep you updated and I have to take a pic of his eye but struggling a bit on my own  :), but I'll try my best!
Chat soon!
Thanks again to you all... you are  :best 2:

Just an update for everyone. We have raised the full amount needed!

One of our members has put up the shortfall that we had left over so Tan is in the process of transferring funds now so that we can get the funds ready to transfer to the vet in South Africa. I sent an email to the clinic yesterday asking them for the final amount as one of our members kindly donated direct from her own South African account. We will have this paid off next week!

Thank you again to everyone who kindly donated to this special fundraising effort we put up, especially as this isn't a rescue in the UK.  No one was more of a sceptic when Lana first posted here than me, but it does my heart wonders to see how once we verified this story our members pulled together to help. You are truly amazing people. Thank you.

We had a lovely weekend together and I spoiled them rotten   :evillaugh: but they both deserved it!
I really hope that I can also be part of something like what you have all done for me.  Thanks everyone!!!

Hope all of you are well!

Hello all

Thanks for all your lovely messages!  Yes, I am so happy that he is doing well.  You should see him now, we are approaching Winter here and I can definitely see that because Samui takes over my pillow completely at night.  I try giving him another pillow but no he wants to be next to me on mine, and who can say no to that  :)...  Sullivan sleeps on my legs so I can hardly move.  They are really like two peas in a pod!

Doctor Bauer said the recovery period is anything from 4 to 6 months, so it is still a while to go.  I am not sure how much the eye will improve from here, but I can definitely see the change because I still give him the drops every day.  The graft is becoming part of the eye if I can put it like that.  I am just really thankful that he can see and every day I see him playing I want to cry (happy tears though) because I realise what could have happend.  As awful as this experience was it has also been amazing in some ways - meeting you all, your help, support, this has given me faith in people again.   :thanks:

Phew, with the power cuts we're having it is hard to get everything done at work during the day.... that is why I can't get on every day, although I want to.

I am looking for some pics to load.

Speak soon  :)
Lana

I agree its such a wonderful story both cat and human  ;D

Purrs and its peeps warms the cockles of my heart, I know we have desperately sad stuff too but this one is a very happy story.

I didnt know you had power cuts in SA, that must be so frustrating.

I have a cat who takes all my pillow too and last night got hardly any sleep, in the early hours he gets off the pillow and cuddles up tp my body until he is joined by his brother  ;D

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!  I am off...

Hello...  It's been a long time.  :)
We had 3 public holidays here last week and I had a few days off, so only back online now.  Just wanted to let you all know Samui is doing really well.  His eye is looking much better and he is only on one of the medications still so we're getting there!  There is a possibility that we have to move house, so not looking forward to that and I know the kids are not going to like it.  Nothing confirmed yet, but it almost looks as if we'll have to move.

I spent most of the time with them when I had my days off.  Samui doesn't really play with toys, but he's got this one fake mouse that he plays with.  The poor thing is in a million peaces and for the life of me I can't find him another one anywhere!  So I am on a mouse hunt at the moment  :evillaugh:

Winter is almost upon us so I am sharing the bed with both Samui and Sullivan at the moment.  I also noticed that they are sleeping late and going to be earlier now that it is colder.  So funny to see the two of them all puffed up.

Hope all of you are well.
Lots of love... Samui, Sullivan and me

Bliss - sleeping late and going to bed earlier!   :evillaugh:  So glad you and the boys are doing so well Lana.  If you have to move then I hope everything goes smoothly, and that you move somewhere you like.  So - now you have the great mouse hunt?!   Paddy has his favourite too - at the moment, it's a cross between his lady love, Ruth's fabulous lady Lexy's banduj (long story, but he "won" her bandage in an auction on Purrs!  :evillaugh:) and a little wind up turkey.  He tucks them into his bed, and sleeps with a paw over them sometimes!

Anyroad, big hugs to you, Samui and Sullivan.

 :morning:
Hello again everyone...  I am glad to be back on the forum, hopefully things will be better from now on.  We got a generator for work so when the power is off I can still work  :)

Samui is doing very well.  I am a bit worried about the "sleep" in his eye.  It seems as though there is something on his eye that keeps the "sleep" there.  I tried to wipe it out but can't get it loose and don't want to mess with the graft.  I've left a message for Doctor Bauer so I'll let you know what he says.  I think it may be a stitch that is still there but on the other hand I don't know if that is possible.  I don't know how to explain the "sleep".  It is like a discharge but gooey...  Hope this makes sense.  Today my English is up to no good again  :evillaugh:
It doesn't seem to bother Samui but I want to get it checked out ASAP.  Hopefully I can take him to my local vet because it's a long drive to Cape Town from here and he really doesn't like a catbox or being in a car.  He's put on some weight again so I'm glad about that.
Sullivan is also doing very well.

The article in AnimalTalk is coming out in July/August issue so I'll definitely send you a copy by post - I just need a postal address.

We'll that's me for now with the update.
Hope all of you are really doing well.
Lana

Hi again , nice to see you.

I would definately get the eye checked out cos it would be sad if it got hurt and didnt get any treatment it needed.

Hope you dont have to move but if you do, hope it goes well.

We are just getting some hot weather for a change and its strange to here you say its getting colder and moving into winter.

One of my cats sleeps on my pillow too and if he doesnt get the place he wants will lie on my heqd and push with his foot till I move. When I look I find he has manovred his way onto all of the pillow  ;D

Hi Lana.  Hopefully, the "sleep" in the eye will just be a temporary measure, but you're right to get it checked out.

I know all about cats who don't like being in a car.  So does Gill  :evillaugh:  On the other hand there are at least two cats on Purrs who adore being in the car.

Sending gentle chin rubs for Samui and the lovely Sullivan too.  Let us know how you get on, Lana.

I know the feeling... I always have to drive alone so I've got a cat box but Samui hates it!  He freaks me out totally when I have to drive with him.  I promised myself when/if I get another "child" I am going to make sure he/she gets use to a cat box from baby time!

 :yayyy:
Good news..  It is the stitches that is causing the discharge to stick to the graft.  No need to worry about it.  The stitches is only coming out when I go back within 4 - 6 months.
Phew!!!  I am so relieved!  Samui is so upset with me for taking him to the vet...  but I assured him it was for his own good.  :)

Yeah, it is quite strange to think you are going into summer and us to winter.  You should see Samui... he's a sneaky one!  When I got to bed he's there and I can move him off the pillow he just comes back every time!  Aah, my sweetheart  :Luv2:
