Title: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol! (HOMED)
Post by: Corporal Smokey on February 03, 2008, 18:05:31 PM
Ok, so we're not allowed favourites but I am rather too fond of this one!

Castrol was found stray on a building site caked in oil. He has been cleaned up but has been left with a yellowish tail. That's not where his uniqueness ends though, oh no! He has odd-eyes and is deaf. He's only young and his lack of hearing doesn't seem to affect him at all.

One more thing....he's a polydactyl so he really is a one off!

He's bouncy, kittenish and very loving. We'd have to see about other cats though, he was homed once and didn't settle with the resident. He was playing with Garfield though in the pens so I think it would vary.

What's that? You want pictures of this lad?

Oh go on then...

Nice try Smokey ... but I already have my hands full with 3  ;)  I also wouldn't be able to offer an indoor only / safe garden for him unfortunately.

I think its assumed that white cats are deaf in some cases.  We had an odd eye white in a few weeks ago that had no hearing problems.  You can always tell as things go on especially when they are an adult.  It can be a bit harder to tell in kittens with selective deafness!!!  lol
Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!
Post by: Corporal Smokey on February 04, 2008, 09:08:07 AM
Sorry I put the word "therefore" in my original post. Sadly he is definately deaf. He is still lovely though  :Luv:

Edited to add: Is the deafness to do with the blue eye? I know the boss lady said it's related to the eyes but I'm not too up on these things!

Yes Amy it is usually blue eyed whites that carry a defective gene causing them to be deaf.

Castrol is gorgeous.

 Both him and Garfield wouldn't keep still long enough! We were there for about half an hour and those are about the best pictures we could get. They're both just like kittens! I am going to have to buy a supply of pingpong balls for my two, we had so much fun  :Luv:

Well I showed my husband the photos and it went something like this...........

I pop up the photos of Castrol in front of my husband
H: Yes what
Me: Isn't he cute
H: Yes (He then thurns to me as he has now clicked on) No way
Me: But isn't he cute
H: Yes very
Me: The CP has had him for ages
H: No
Me: But he is deaf babe (I try to give the puppy dog eyes)
H: He is cute but no more
Me: But babe
H: Ok lets talk about it another time

Yay break through  :evillaugh:   There was no "Absolutely not"

He had just walked in from work and I know he was tired so I'll talk again tomorrow with him.   WIll then ask for the sat nav and make arrangements to meet Castrol myself on Friday - or possibly if tomrrow night talks go well - me and hubby will meet him Saturday - will keep you posted.

Oh I don't know. I am sure he can be convinced.  Lay a few of Castrol's photos all over the house, especially the ones where he's looking particularly pleading. Eventually he'll cave  :evillaugh:

Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!
Post by: Dawn F on February 07, 2008, 10:26:35 AM
tbh he did actually say yes first of all, he is pretty kind hearted but that's the problem, Oscar our boy cat is a bit shy and sensitve and he is worried he will be overwhealmed by a more dominant male coming into the house and deep down I know he is probably right - I've still been leaving photos around though!
Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!
Post by: blackcat on February 07, 2008, 10:28:22 AM
Interesting .... he seems to have developed the useful strategy of agreeing then convincing you it is a bad idea - very clever of them. Most men just say no and wonder why they get into trouble or say yes then complain they are henpecked - I like his style. Clearly one of the more intelligent versions ...

My husband isn't my main worry about not getting Castrol as i htink he knows if I really want him we are having him, no my main worry is with Castrol being deaf we have our catflap open 24/7 for our cats so need to talk to the bosslady at CP about our situation, the house, layout of outside, etc about whether it is safe enough for Castrol!     I won't take him on if its not safe enough for him.
Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!
Post by: Dawn F on February 07, 2008, 10:57:00 AM
tbh my oh is visiting his mother in Italy in a couple of weeks and actually said you should have just got him while I wasn't here - but like bc says he has managed to plant a seed of doubt in my mind - evil genius!!
Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!

Personally I would not have a deaf cat as an outdoor cat - there are too many dangers that can sneak up on them if they are unable to hear ...
Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!
Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on February 07, 2008, 10:59:34 AM
Being all white too, he would need careful care from the sun as well to prevent any sunburn which could later cause cancer.

Its really great you're checking all you need to MrsR. I hope that this little one finds the right home be it with you or another lucky person. I wish I could have him. Lexy would murder me, then him, but there you go!
Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!
Post by: MrsR on February 07, 2008, 11:04:06 AM
Yes we have to cover Sofa's ear with sunblock as the tips white.

If we get this cat flap that reads microchoips problem solved but we need to meet Castrol and see his personality as my guys have very distinct personalities, also because he was re-homed once before and returned I'd hate to upset the little guy and have it happen again.

I have fallen in love with him though and have everything crossed.

Post by: blackcat on February 07, 2008, 11:17:24 AM
He is very appealing I have to say, but it is what is best for the cat that is important, and if you don' think you will be able to keep him indoors, then perhaps he is not the right cat for you. We have an endless stream of lovely darlings who appear on this site, so it is likely another equally lovely cat will come along who is better suited to the lifestyle you can offer ...

Post by: Corporal Smokey on February 07, 2008, 11:42:16 AM
Having chatted to MrsR via PM, I have no doubt whatsoever that she is the right person for Castrol. We have discussed a couple of things that may hamper this perfect union and it may well be that the home itself isn't quite right on this oocasion. TBH, Nikki was the one who suggested she may not have the right environment for him so I know that Castrol's interests are at the forefront.

Like you say though Nikki, you may be able to sort out a clever cat-flap and it might also be that Castrol won't settle as a completely indoor cat. He's been in the shelter for a bit so the ladies there have got to know him quite well. They will advise the right thing to do and if the home's not right don't worry I'll try to sell you every other cat that comes in  ;) and there will be many this year, I can feel it in the water...

OK me and hubby talked about it last night, now he really doesn't want us to get another cat yet, really really doesn't but after long discussions it was left as a no but he left me the sat nav this morning!

Now my husband is a real sweetie and although he really doesn't want another cat yet he knows me and my love is animals, especially cats so he knows he would never 100% stop me - with the last cat Poppy we never even discussed it I just told he Poppy was coming to stay!

However although he has left me the sat nav I am going to actually do what he has asked for once and wait.

I do have reservations about Castrol being deaf and living here due to a couple of factors that Corporal Smokey knows.     Next month I will re-review with my husband and you never know but I could see iin his eyes last night he really isn't ready for yet another cat.

I have fallen in love with the photos of Castrol and who knows if some luckey person hasn't snapped him up the moon and planets may all come together and it will be the right time but for now - for the first time ever - I am going to do what my husband has asked!

Sorry  :shy:

Title: Re: How's this for unique? Introducing Castrol!
Post by: Corporal Smokey on February 08, 2008, 11:15:17 AM
Oh bless you please don't feel bad. He's such a lovely kitty and he's been on CatChat for less than a week so he'll be snapped up in no time. I'll make sure personally that his new home is vetted to a super high standard and I will assure you that he will be loved.

My OH is the same. He said I couldn't have a cat. I nageed and nagged and he never quite relented. Although he adores them both, I still feel an enormous guilt that I betrayed him and wish he had given me his blessing.

I'm happy that I have found a local Purrs friend and particularly one who is partial to a "special" cat as I am.

Please please don't feel guilty, our hubbys and boyfriends are sometimes (not often but sometimes) right. He'll be really proud of you

Awwww thank you hun, means a lot coming from you.  I was so worried.   I do so want him though - but maybe it wouldn't have been a great partnership and the CP bosslady may have decided against me anyway.   Next month though me and hubby will be retalking  ;)

I will have to come down to the shelter though when you are about to say hi and meet everyone  :shy:

I'll give you a lift next time I pop up to do pictures. It's a bit quiet at the moment but I fear it's the calm before the storm. I think kittening season's going to be a biggie this year and I think it begins soon. It's milder and spring bulbs are already showing in places.

People are already posting about kittens and pregnant cats so it won't be long, we're bracing ourselves...

That's brilliant news - I am currently waiting for a rescue persian but when I saw this little cat, I wanted him immediately! What a fantastic looking little chap he is - and polydactyl, too - that's supposed be ever so lucky, aside from being really unique. As someone who loves to rub cat's paws (!) then I would have been in heaven!  :Luv2: I would have adopted him like a flash but I am afraid my other half was less enamoured . . . . but hey; as long as this little poppet has found a lap and some love, then brill. Top job!  :shy:

I spoke to the boss lady today and she was thanking me profusely for the CatChat work. She said that Castrol, Molly and Garfield had all been overlooked for weeks and weeks but as soon as they went on the net they found really great homes. She said "I couldn't have found better homes for them" so I presume all's well!

I'm sure he's fine, I haven't heard anything to the contrary. Mind you I haven't heard anything for a couple of weeks, I need to call them at some point to find out if they have any cats they need me to put on here.

I'll let you know when I speak to them!

One more thing....he's a polydactyl so he really is a one off!

Only just caught up with this. Far from being a one off I am afraid. There are loads of Polydactyl, (sometimes affectionately called Hemingway cats) in our area. In fact I posted on a while ago about one we had one handed in with 27, 28 or 29 (can't remember exactly) toes. We found its owner then a while later I saw its pic in the Sunday People (They always have an animal bit, and the story must have been submitted a while before the cat got lost.)

The first  Polydactyl I took in I named him Bruno (after Frank) huge hands.

 I know Ela but I'm all about the advertising. It's what I do for a living!

Castrol's thread IS five pages and he's found a loving home so there's no harm in mentioning his finer points.

Incidentally, what's the village called in Wales that's famous for its polydactyls? It's bugging me!

Pass  but in and around the old county of Cardiganshire they were sometimes known as "Cardi-cats".

They are also quite common here in Chesterfield.
