I'm sorry to be a pain again but I need a bit of advice. I've noticed that Portia's pupils are fully dilated all the time, even in daylight, when Ollies are slits. Also I noticed today that when I drop a little treat i.e. a bit of ham, on the floor, if it doesn't land right in front of her she doesn't seem to see it. I'm seriously beginning to wonder if she is able to see properly. The trouble is, she seems to prefer to spend nearly all day behind the TV even though she's been here for 8 weeks now and only comes out for food. She did begin to come out but then, for some reason which we can't puzzle out, she just stays in there.
Any comments would be welcome, but I' ll be booking her in to see our vet.
-
It sounds to me that she cant see and I would have her checked by a vet tomorrow .I wonder if this is why she is hiding?
Hope your vet knows about eyes cos my London vet had an eye vet in two days a week.
How old is Portia and how long have her eyes ben like this?
Hope all goes well at the vets, a blind cat can cope fine once they know their patch and get confident
-
I'd definitely see the vet - I think Anchor road is a referral clinic with everything that opens and shuts, or so I was told. Anyway, sounds like she is not a happy girl so a quick trip to the vet will not go astray...
-
Fingers crossed for her.
-
Nothing useful to add I'm afraid, just wanted to wish you well for the vet visit
-
Ahh can't offer any advice I'm afraid other that to get her to the vet for a check up.
Good luck and big hugs to you both
-
My Minnie is blind in her right eye, and some of Portia's behaviour sounds similar to Minnie. If Portia can't see, it doesn't need to be a total disaster - Minnie enjoys the same quality of life as my two other cats. Although we have to make some small adjustments for her, like remembering that she can't be approached on her right or she will get scared and lash out, and being patient when she causes a queue on the stairs because she needs to rub her face on every banister post on the way down so that later she can sniff her way back up, it really hardly makes a difference. Hopefully the cause of Portia's apparent blindness isn't anything that will cause her any other problems - good luck
-
Hope all goes well at the vet's and hug to little Portia
-
Thanks for all your help. I'm trying to get an appointment today for her. If there is something wrong with her eyes, it just means she will be even more precious to us. I'll let you know what happens.
-
sending lots of  to you and Portia.

This happened to my mum's cat, Sukie when she was 6 months old. She had a happy 12 years and was a big purrball who liked nothing better than spending the evening on mum's lap being groomed - then over to dads lap where she loved getting a good, hard scratch. If I visited, she would go upstairs to my old room and wait on the bed for me ;D (she slept on my pillow as a kitten :Luv2: ) :evillaugh: - it's so sad though :'(
Sukie's condition caused her retinas to come away and didn't cause her any pain or other illnesses. The main thing was not moving furniture etc so they have a mental map of the house.
Just as well to get it checked as some conditions are reversible.

Just back from vets. He says she seems to have a general infection which has caused some bleeding in the eye and also a chest infection. He says he is pretty certain her eyesight is OK as her pupils reacted when he examined. He gave her a long lasting antibiotic and some drops for her eyes. If she starts to eat properly and sems to be improving she goes back in a week, but if there is no improvement in a couple of days I'm to take her back. Pleas send positive vibes to her to get well as I am really worried abouit her.
-
poor babe, that sounds awful, hope the antibiotics start of work soon
-
Lots of love and thoughts for Portia
-
I'm feeling so unhappy at the moment. Portia had to be PTS this morning. Her breathing had deteriorated rapidly since yesterday and despite being put in an oxygen tent she continued to go downhill and we had to make the awful decision to let her go. I feel as if I have really failed her.
-
Oh no, I am so very sorry for your loss. Please don't blame yourself you loved her and did all you could to help her - she is free at Rainbow Bridge now and will be looking down on you with love :care:
-
Oh Puddy, how sad!!! I wish I could be there for you, but am up in London today and will not be home till late. Please, if you want to talk, PM me and I will send you my phone number once i get home.
Take care, and cuddle Ollie who will need it is as much as you.
Jo

So sorry to hear this but please do not beat yourself up about it, you did your best

Miss Me, But Let Me Go
___________________
When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not too long, and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared.
Miss me, but let me go.
This is a journey that we all must take, and each must go alone.
It’s all part of the Master’s Plan. It’s a step on the road to home.
Miss me, but let me go.
When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing deeds.
Miss me, but let me go

Remember Our Love
I was chosen today
I'm learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don't you cry
And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone
When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.
Remember our love
In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
when you're thinking of me.

Sorry to hear the sad news Puddy.........
RIP Little Portia :(
-
Thank you all so much for your messages - they have really helped me today. I know you understand what I'm feeling. I think it is her being so young that seems to make it worse, although it is awful whatever age it happens. Ollie and I have had a play with da bird and now he's fast asleep and full of prawns that he had for his tea. I think I'll join you for the quiz to keep me occupied. Once again, thank you all so much - it would have been a lot worse without you to talk to.
-
It will be great if you make the quizz but if Ollie needs you we will understand
You are right we all understand cos most of us have been there and those who havent live with the thought, I think. It is so hard for anyone, and on Purrs we can all give you support ;D

-
How sad, what was wrong with her?
RIP little one taken too young x
-
Thank you all for your kind thoughts. CC, she had caught a virus which seemed to race through her. As she was so thin, she had no reserves to fight it even with the antibiotics. Her x-ray showed her whole chest was filled with fluid and she was having awful trouble breathing because of this. Our vet started to try and drain the fluid but she just went downhill so in the end there was nothing we could do.It was an awful decision to make but she was suffering so much that we didn't really have an option. The vet said that if she had been a normal weight, she might have managed to pull through
-
Ah puddy, so sad. Hope you are feeling better now - it will take a while I know. It is always hard to lose these wee babies ...
