Title: Lucas' room - the second chapter
Post by: Cheesecat on November 22, 2007, 20:58:09 PM
First of all I just wanted to say thankyou so much for all the lovely messages everyone has posted today - I have read every one of them (and had a blub over a good few too) but it has been lovely to know that there are so many caring people out there and also to know how many of you were touched by our gorgeous man.

We are going to print all our photos of Lucas and make a big collage for the wall of his room, with little descriptions and things that fit his personality - I will post a picture when we have finished  :shy:

I was thinking to myself today - as I have already posted, that I am determined to make our Lucas proud and I want to get involved with helping poor needy babes as much as I possibly can - I know I am nowhere near on a scale with some fantastic peeps like DD, but I want to do my best  :Luv2: I wondered to myself how I would know which is the next cat that is destined to come and stay with us in Lucas' room.. and I thought to myself in my mixed up head that maybe it would be a Siamese as I have been going on about them since the Supreme, and I thought to myself - I don't think theres a huge change of DD needing a home for a Siamese baby.

Well, I obviously missed this thread http://www.purrsinourhearts.co.uk/index.php?topic=9068.0

DD PMed me today and happened to mention that these poor Siamese babes need a home or the breeder says she will PTS. I couldn't really believe it because after what I'd been thinking this morning, Dawn does actually have needy Siamese kitties - two of them! I replied and told her about my thought that morning and she said maybe Lucas sent them to me as the next lot of kitties to stay in his room.

Anyway, long story short - me and Phil are taking on these cats and hopefully giving them the love they deserve - whilst trying our best to sort out their little problem. Apparently they need to gain weight too - so maybe Lucas thought they were kitties after his own heart  :Luv2:

They arrive tomorrow, and to be honest I think I really am glad we are throwing ourselves right back in, as it helps knowing that Lucas is spurring us on to try our best to make a difference and be productive in his honour.

I will never forget the big grey and white pawprint on our hearts

Lucas will be up there smiling now   I'm really pleased you're prepared to take on these babes, and I'm sure they'll help fill the gap that Lucas left behind   I'll bell you tomorrow, xxxx

Oh bless you Dawn!!   I also believe it was Lucas guiding them over to you, he wants you to carry on with your chin up while honouring and remembering him close in your heart.  It is a wonderful tribute and a great way to carry on his legacy, also the new babies will help your heart heal, too.  I am happy for you and keep us posted about them, and maybe you could take a picture of Lucas's room and let us see it?  My best wishes to you and your arriving babies!!

just to say my pal Jill (aka marks cats in on the look out for some orientals. The older the better as she doesn't feel as guilty taking them on - the only thing is they will be going to a multicat household.

(Hi to jill if you're lurking in the background!!)

Dawns - sorry to hear about poor Lucas and I'm so glad that it hasn't put you off helping! Take care , Angie

Angie, I'm going to get all the info on these two tomorrow off the breeder and also have a chat to Sean.  He thinks it's dietary with them so the problem may be easily sorted but we won't know until we get them.  I'm going to get the some Lacto B.........where do I buy it from though cos I haven't got a clue  :tired:  I do know the breeder has spent a lot of money trying to get to the root cause but to no avail.  Fingers crossed these little darlings will have their bums sorted by the time Dawn's got to grips with them  :evillaugh:

Well done you and Phil for taking on these two

To Love Again
____________

Oh what unhappy twist of fate has brought you homeless to our gate,
The gate where once another stood to beg for shelter, warmth and food?

For from that day we ceased to be the masters of our destiny,
While he, with purr and velvet paw, became within our house the law.

He scratched the furniture and shed and claimed the middle of the bed,
He ruled in arrogance and pride and broke our hearts the day he died.

So if you really think, oh cats, we would willingly relive all that,
Because you come forlorn and thin;
Well, don't just stand there - come on in.

Thankyou for that poem Yvonne - it is beautiful  :'( I think I will print that one out

Dolcetta  :thanks: for your kind words in both threads, I will take some photos of Lucas' room tomorrow as I am going to get an early night and try to be at least only half zombified for work tomorrow   I will take some pictures before the new kitties get here - its nothing special, just a room with lots of beds and cushions (Lucas didn't play much so we made up for the toys with comfy things  ;D ) It also has pictures of Lucas on the door  :Luv:

Angie, that sounds promising - I hope I can sort these little ones out and get them a lovely new home  ;D

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow Dawn  :shy:

I've had a chat to the breeder and to my fab fosterer Dawn  :evillaugh: and it's all sorted for tomorrow  :Luv2:  These will probably still remain under Sean's care for the time being.  He knows the cats and I trust him and he knows what has been tried and what hasn't.  He also has a lot of mates at the University and apparently another cat that the breeder took on also had problems and was treated via them.  She is going to pass the details onto me so Sean can contact whoever it was that dealt with the cat in question and we'll see if she can come up with any ideas.

I wouldn't be happy about rehoming them at the moment as ideally, we could do with sorting out their little "problem".  It would be great to get them into a fab new home but I think this will be the best course of action for the time being.  I'm not sure what they're like with other cats, etc etc, I've only seen them in the vets whilst they went in for treatment so I wouldn't want to assume they'd be okay for them to have to be moved on again because of problems.  We also don't know if their problem is dietary or stress related, these are all things that need sorting before a "forever" home is found as any potential "owners" will not know what they are taking on which isn't fair to anyone, and the cats have to be paramount in any decisions made.  As soon as we have something a little concrete, no joke intended  :shify: we will update as and when

The little girl will be spayed, and microchipped before rehoming and I'm pretty sure they are vaccinated already and the boy has already had his bits done.

Dawn D, you can get Lacto B from petmeds.co.uk and if you use the promotion code 8lives you get 5% off.

Dawn and Phil are doing an amazing thing and what Lucas would have loved.

These two sound a bit like my runny bum Tarka.  If it helps he is on Hills W/D tins, peridale granules and Pro-soluble.  This definitely keeps his runny bum under control and as soon as he gets his teeth into anything else, (when he escapes up to the cat room) the runs come back again.

To Dawn and Phil

MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

I too, would make a Will if I could write
To some poor, wistful, lonely stray
I leave my happy home
My dish, my cosy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy.
The well loved lap, the gentle stroking hand, the loving voice
The place I made on someone's heart.
the love that at the last
Could help me to a peaceful, painless end, held in loving arms.
If I should die
Oh, do not say
"No more a cat I'll have to grieve me by it's loss"
Seek out a lonely, unloved cat and give my place to him.
This is my legacy.
The love I leave behind.
T'is all I have to give.

Gail, Lucas did have a kisseable face  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  He was one of those babes that just melt your heart and you can't get him out of your system.  I feel lucky to have made a difference to his life and I'm sure Dawn and Phil do as well, it's such a shame I only knew about him when I caught him  :'(   He will be remembered by all of us and with him entering Dawn's life, he is going to make such a differance to many furbabes, which in my eyes makes me realise he did what he was meant to do whilst he was here.

I've picked them up and they are gorgeous  :Luv2:  :Luv2:  Dawn, you will love them I promise, they are beautiful.  Their names are Eric and Fizz and Eric already loves his Aunty Dawn    :evillaugh: :Luv:  :Luv:  He snuggled up to me when Uncle Sean was giving him the once over  :)  They are very skinny bless them but I've picked some Hill's Recovery food up for them to try and settle their tums abit.  Sean said they've been tested for everything and up to now everything is clear.  The only thing he doesn't think they've had done is blood tests   I'm surprised at this really but I said I want them to settle for a couple of weeks first then if needed, he can do some bloods on them.  I'm hoping they will settle, I would love them to get sorted, they are just adoreable and little purr monsters  :Luv:

Eric is the Apricot and already I'm in love  :Luv2:  Fizz is the chocolate tortie and is also a little sweetheart  :Luv2:  Piccies not very good as I took them in the carrier but it will give you an idea  ;)

The breeder rehomes the older ones, well not old but she lets them have a couple of litters first, then they are spayed and rehomed.  I think she does charge a set amount for them but I know if she gets any others that she's desperate to get homes for, she will give me a shout.

Glad these 2 have got such a loving foster home ready and I hope that they are back to full health soon and tummy problems sorted out and find a new home with someone who will love them forever. Choc tortie Siamese looks such an unusual colour, never seen/heard of those before. Give them both a cuddle from me

You've set us all up for another online love-affair! ;D

Wait until you see these pictures  :Luv: the babies are here, and all snuggly in Lucas' room. I am sure Dawn only picks the most beautiful babies for us to foster- first our handsome boy Lucas and now these two (with his help too of course!). I hope Lucas will watch over them in his room and I am sure he will send some of his wonderful purrs from the bridge to help them get better.

These two are absolute purr boxes  :) they absolutely adore each other and have sampled all of Lucas' favourite beds and snuggle-places and chosen Lucas' favourite cushion to fall asleep on together - they are all snuggled up with paws around each other like a special two-piece kitty jigsaw.

I really hope we can help Erick and Fiz and their tums  ;D

Apologies for dark pics but the cushion they are enjoying is under a chair with another cushion on  :evillaugh:

:Luv: we had to drag ourselves out of their room to let them sleep as they were trying to sleep but then curiosity kept getting the better of them and they would come back out for a pet - they are both really loving (and inquisitive!) but a little nervous :blow kiss:

Not sure if they have been played with before as they were intrigued but baffled by our selection of toys (unless we just buy strange toys!!) Again that might be nervousness with them.
More pictures tomorrow I am sure  :) they have definitely put a little smile back on my face today.

p.s Susanne and Ems (and anyone else for that matter!) - feel free to come visit anytime you like

These cats are absolutely lovely, I am so in love with the pair of them and I'm sure they'll melt a few hearts along the way  :Luv:  :Luv:  :Luv:  I bought them some Hill's Recovery food and before I'd even got it on the plate they were wolfing it down, they ended up eating a tray each   They are extremely underweight especially the gorgeous boy Erick, he is just so beautiful but they both look so delicate bless them.  They settled in in no time and Fiz was very inquisite, and couldn't keep her nose out of anything.........I'm really pleased they've got a new mummy and daddy, I know it may be temporary but who knows  :evillaugh:   Thanks again Dawn and Phil, Lucas will be so proud of you both and so am I

:mad2: Makes me mad when people do that!!!

I have learnt to quietly bite my tongue in these situations although sometimes I can feel the steam coming out of my ears  :sneaky:  To be fair to the breeder, I think she does care about her cats.  I know in this instance she used the "they will be put to sleep" ploy on me but she has spent a lot of money trying to get these two sorted out and she has been trying for the last 15 months, I don't think a lot of breeders would do that tbh.   Sean said today that he thought little Erik had lost more weight since he saw him last but none have a temperature so I'm still swinging towards the notion that it's dietary or even stress related.  He said today that he doesn't think it's stress as it's unusual with them being siblings and having the same problem but I think they have been isolated, they don't really get much interaction as she's busy with the other cats/kittens and they do crave attention, it was obvious at Dawn's tonight, this is something they do need.  The other thing he was thinking was it was possibly a genetic problem but the breeder knows the lines and said it's impossible so I don't know.  I think we will just have to wait and see but if tonight was anything to go by, I expect to see nice podgy tummies next time I see them

They were hilarious with the food  Fiz stuck her paw in the water bowl because she was so excited about that recovery food  :Luv2: they absolutely demolished it!

I am getting up now - about to go in and see them - hope they are okay! Its freezing here too so need to put their heating on  :Luv:
Its feeding time at the zoo, I have a tortie rubbing all over my hands and laptop while I try to type (Gerti) she is purring her head off so I think its a hint  ;)

More pictures later on I am sure  :)

What an adorable pair of furries!!  The name Erick caught my attention, too, an unusual spelling, not Eric, nor Erik, but Erick... and one of the dearest friends I ever had when I lived in San Antonio Texas, he was also EriCK. :)  I feel so  :Luv: also because it shows that Lucas is now taking good care of you and these babies from up above.  And feed them well, (which obviously you are doing exactly  ;) ), looks like they need it!!

   to you Dawn, Erick and Fiz!!

There is so much I dont about about cats  :evillaugh:

I have NEVER given a cat a bath before but by did these two need one this morning   ;) they were all nervous too bless them and had wedged themselves in behind a box - took alot of coaxing to get them out, I do wonder if they have been told off for making a mess of themselves in the past and they were afraid I was going to do the same.

Four beds in the boil wash this morning  :evillaugh: along with a pair of my trousers! they are still eating well.

I went to PAH to see what they had in the way of "cat shampoo" again, I have not got a clue about these things. I was quite annoyed that they have around 20 shampoos for dogs of all types and nothing for cats! I got speaking to a lady in the food aisle who has a Birman with an upset tummy and she said she is going through the process of trying all the sensitive foods out too - I asked her about the shampoo and she said she uses baby shampoo so I went to the supermarket and got some of that.

Fiz did not like being bathed at all  :( I felt guilty but it had to be done - she was crying for Erick from the bathroom and he was crying back at her  :'( lets just say it was a two person job and they WERE clean but are quickly making a change to that as we speak! They didnt speak to me for a little while after that but I dont think these two babies can last long without a snuggle when its on offer - Erick was just sat with his front paws on my legs, purring his head off and keeps looking up at me with big blue eyes  :Luv2: I started falling asleep it was so nice and comfy  :Luv:

They are trying to use their litter tray, I wasn't sure if they would - I think they just dont realise they are "going" half the time  :( I hope I can win them round so they are not so nervous because I think that will help them out.

I do love the spelling of Erick too, I think it is unusual and suits him down to the ground  :wow:

yes, highly strung animals do that. My mother's poodle was like that when we first got her. She settled down once she worked out no-one was going to yell at her or hit her ... but we had some nasty little trails up the hall carpet for quite some time after she arrived

I can imagine about Fiz in the bath, once I had to give Hobbes a fleabath, my god he kept letting out such bloodcurdling yowls so loudly as if he were yelling out to the whole neighbourhood "Hellllpppp my slave has decided to butcher me to pieces!!"
Hope this won't need to be repeated very often if ever again!!

    anew... :Luv:

Natasha, my mother's siamese would cling grimly to the edge of the sink with one paw, the other firmly embedded in my hand, and just grizzle quietly while going crosseyed with anxiety ... And the look she gave when she was finally released!!

Dylan used to have to be bathed on a daily basis when he had his tummy problems    I found the easiest way to do it was with the shower head.  I would get my son to hold him and I'd put the shampoo etc on him and wash him down, it was much quicker and less traumatic for all concerned, me included  :shy:  The first few times I did him in the Bidet and I looked like I'd been attacked by Edward Scissorhands  :evillaugh:

Its also helps if you stand them on something, if your'e doing it in a bath - I use an upturned crate with a bath mat on top to stop them slipping, as in the pic, or you could use an upturned plastic laundry basket with the bath mat on.

Brilliant idea Gillian as saves getting a sore back bending into the bath. Will remember that next time I bath Bilbo.

(Mods, we are highjacking the thread... but it is an interesting topic, maybe it is an idea to split this thread and create a "cat bathing" thread?)

They're both gorgeous (no hope of them growing into those ears though  :evillaugh:).  Lucas would be very proud

Hope you can sort their tummies out, might be worth PM-ing Sheryl as her two bengals had a similar problem, all the vets tests came up with nothing out of the ordinary but with a stable diet and a supplement they are both doing really well.

I don't mind the thread being hijacked  :evillaugh: need all the bathing tips I can get!

I have just been into them now and they need a wash again really  :( will do it in the bath tomorrow with the shower head and that might not be so hard to do (it was in the sink before) I think I made Fiz scared of me - but she really needed a wash  :( Erick is a bit nervous but the love of a good fuss outweighs that  ;D

The carpet has taken a beating today! I think I will buy a few Sunday papers tomorrow and cover the floor in them so at least any soiled papers can be removed/replaced rather than constantly scrubbing the carpet every few hours (and they dont like standing on the wet floor! keep doing that thing where they shake their paw in disapproval  )

I think I will get into the habit of having the two sets of beds and going through the constant wash-dry-replace cycle, yesterdays beds are now washed and dried to replace todays with - am so glad we got the washing machine put in last week now

Helen - what is Sheryl's name on here - am I being forgetful? It is late for me after all  :evillaugh:

Gillian - who is that a piccie of? What a cutie!  :Luv:

Dawn, I expect their bums to be spotless when I come over for cuddles tomorrow   :naughty:  Only joking   :evillaugh:   I feel awful now, I really hope they will settle down.  Sean was saying yesterday though which is understandable, their tummies will probably be worse for a few days with the stress of moving them.  I think once they get into a regular routine of eating, they will slowly improve.  I think the breeder was possibly restricting their food intake, I may be wrong but the less going in, the less to come out but by doing this, their digestive system will be causing havoc.  I was annoyed yesterday when she informed me before I set off that they hadn't had any food since the night before because of the travelling, it's no wonder they were starving bless them  >:(  >:(  I'm not sure what's the best way to approach it, whether it's wise to leave food down constantly which I would be tempted to do until they get a little bit of meat on them, or to restrict to 3 small meals daily  :Dont know:  Maybe Sheryl will have an idea how to go about it, I think it's worth getting in touch, sorry, I'm not sure what her name is on here either  :shy: and to find out what food and supplements she's used on her little babes.  I'll see you tomorrow anyway and  :Flowers: to you and Phil, xxxxxxxxx

I would try small regular meals to be honest, in case they gorge themselves with food left down all the time, especially when they aren't used to it.
Dawn, are they dirty enough to need a full wash, or could you get round it with baby wipes?

Dawn, I guess you know about the Lacto B probitoic which is used by several peeps on here? - spect someone's already advised about it, but just in case they havent, would be worth a go in their food. http://www.petmeds.co.uk/Products/Lacto-B

Helen - Doh!!!  I will PM her now  :shy: thanks for the heads up...

I have been leaving the dry food down all the time (and water) and then giving them the RC recovery twice a day - they arent really munching and munching on it - they just seem to graze all day  :shy:

I have tried baby wipes Des, unfortunately it is a bit too bad for that  :( it doesnt really get any of it off them. I dont think they help matters by being little jigsaw snugglers and then spreading it all over each other  I am waiting for Phil to come home so I can wash them in the bath - its definitely a two person job with these wigglers  ;D been trying to wipe them down a bit myself today but I will be much happier once they have had a real wash (even if they will ignore me for a while after!)

They seemed to come out of their shells a bit today - they didnt run away when the door opened and came all the way over to me for a fuss without my coaxing or going over to them  :Luv2: Erick is dying to get on my lap and I feel guilty because I cant always let him or I will run out of clothes. Fiz loves a fuss too and wil come out if Erick is out  :shy:

I dont want to feel excited in advance but I covered the floor of their room in paper so I can just replace dirty sheets (the carpet is a pain to scrub) as they seem to constantly be sort of dripping without realising  :( this afternoon i've gone in and rather than loads of little bits around the floor there was one pile (sorry if this is too much info!) but I thought that was good as it wasnt quite so watery and everywhere. Fingers crossed please  ;)

Gillian, I have heard of Lacto B - been trying to see where online is the cheapest - thanks for the link. I am seeing how they go on this diet but its an option if these is no improvement  :) I will ask Sheryl if she tried that for her babes.

They have a towel that I have been using the dry them off after their baths - its on radiator now so I can use that one tonight if he wants to snuggle me  ;D

These two do seem particularly sensitive but I honestly think with some tlc and lots of cuddles, they will settle down and you'll see a big difference in them  :Luv:  :Luv:  They definitely need a nice quiet household as I think too much going on or too much noise would freak them out.  They don't seem to know how you are going to react although as I've mentioned they are so much better than they were last week, Dawn said they're not hiding away as much now whereas if they went in the room earlier on in the week, they would disappear but would come out with some coaxing.  I still can't believe the lady said they would be okay split, they absolutely adore each other and I think it would have been a crime to separate them.........they have to be together bless them  :Luv:  :Luv:
