Title: Lexy back home - bladder stones removed successfully
Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on November 21, 2007, 20:58:52 PM
Hiya, some of you know Lexy recently had probs going to the toilet, she's been good so far a couple days, nice solid poos.

I just got back from the kitchen and noticed outside on the mat (should have taken a pic!) a red liquid, possibly sticky, I used a tissue to mop it up.

It was clear, not a solid opaque colour, reddish, brown maybe. It was just outside the tray. I cleaned the tray, nothing of the kind inside the tray, wee fine, poos fine.

Lexy is a little quiet, a little off her wet food today but ate the biscuits without a hithc. Didn't want me to pick her up a minute ago but she's normally a bit like that anyway when I try to pick her up when she doesn't want to.

Please, anyone have ideas?  I can't see any reasonable source for this liquid and cant see evidence of it anywhere in the house!  Lynn, sound like something I should be worried about?

 :thanks:

Thanks Lucy. I just worried it was blood in urine but the urine in the tray has no trace of colour to it, and it was just THERE.. nothing more no dribbles on the lip of the tray, nothing...  :scared:

I would go for blood in the urine myself. Bob used to pee outside the tray when he was having cystitis just to make sure i noticed and got his antibiotics...

Even that small an amount Jo? it was probably about 3 or  4 large drops that kinda melded together on the mat?  She would have had to be in the tray to pee that though but there are not drops or any tracks on the edge of the tray or inside it... I really don't want it to be blood (can you tell!).. my vet loves me..

Ok she just went to the tray again, and squirted outside.  Def blood, urine is nearly brown in colour. What do I do??  She appears ok but can I wait to speak to vet tomorrow or should I be calling vet now???

Ah  :censored: this.  She's probably been fighting this all week now.

Title: Re: Red clear liquid outside litter tray...any ideas?
Post by: blackcat on November 21, 2007, 21:20:36 PM
yes, he used to do just wee dribbles (he had crystals in the bladder as a recurring prob), and would just squeeze out enough to ease the pressure, but it was often bloodstained... Is she going more frequently and looking worried?? that's what Bob used to do ... He would also come in and use the tray when I was on the loo, as a means of letting me know. He would squat there and stare at me reproachfully...

I would ring the vet and see what they advise.  Good luck

She's not looking worried, but Lexy naturally avoids me when she's in a mood which she is doing now. Just reading the health thread Tan posted a while ago.

Will call vet, going to get her biscuits off floor and put a couple extra water bowls out aroudn the flat.

Thanks everyone. x

Defo get to the vet in the morning - if she is still passing urine the blockage is not complete, but would not mess around with this. Lynn will doubtless give more accurate advice. Bob and I had more than one midnight run to the vet for blockages ... and yes, definitely no dry food, will probably have to go on a low-magnesium diet...

Just spoke to vet. Based on past week she's happy to wait tonight and see how she is tomorrow and then we will most likely have a visit tomorrow evening.

My poor baby. She's in front of the fire now resting.

Thanks again xx

Thanks everyone. She's sat here purring at me. Saw a bird outside and started chattering.
But won't eat the food I put down for her even though she woke me asking for it.

And pee smells strong and still blood in it. I gave her one drop of metacam last night just to help with pain.

Just waiting for Caroline to call back.

I can see my baby is not quite there. I've taken the day off.

Poor Lexy - what does your vet give for cystitis? I think Cystaid are really good, they help the lining of the bladder.
Title: Re: Red clear liquid outside litter tray...any ideas?
Post by: Ela on November 22, 2007, 08:31:34 AM
Poor Lexy, assuming Caroline is the vet, if she has not contacted you by nine I suggest you ring again, as  you know the sooner Lexy starts to receive medication the better. Also good of you for taking the day off, so many people think they will wait until they  get home before taking the little on to the vets.

Title: Re: Red clear liquid outside litter tray...any ideas?
Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on November 22, 2007, 11:57:12 AM
Caroline does visits at home, she's coming over soon as she can after her last call. Since there has been no more blood since this morning, but she is going more frequently Caroline wants to see her sooner rather than later, she's just trying to fit me in. She's happy for me not to take her to surgery as stressing her will probably inflame this more.

She didn't give her cystaid the last time Des, just the antibiotic injection and fluids to help Lexy flush it out.  :scared:

I'll let you know what is said. She is going to take fluids, antibiotics and a sample.

No food from now til later so will see how things go. Which means I have to not eat either otherwise that's just unfair.

LOL! that's what I had to do yesterday as I had a customer coming here to the house, and to be honest yesterday was a complete write off! but somehow I managed to tidy up and make 'pleasant' conversation with my customer. You'll be starving if you havent had brekkie either, couldnt you sneak a quick bite to eat while Lexy's not looking  :sneaky:

Good luck anyway,  :luck: and definitely mention cystaid like Desley said, it would be worth a try.

Thanks, still waiting. She had an emergency so we're sat here waiting. We had a nap this afternoon and Lexy is now starving and wants food, but Caroline still not here, she said no later than 8pm. At least I got to spend the day with Lexy. Lounge is at least tidy and the kettle is ready to boil for a cuppa.  :scared:  Hate waiting.

Gwynnie ok Gillian?

but at least you are waiting in a tidy room. I really like a tidy room, and I really only seem to achieve it when I am expecting guests. I hate unexpected guests as a consequence  So hope it is nothing serious. I am sure it is not. Take care of yourself as well as Lexie and if the munchies strike, just lock yourself in the bathroom so she can not see you eating

:naughty: had a bit of chocolate in the kitchen.

The drill is I have to close the living room door so lexy can't hide when Caroline gets here, as a result she knows somethings up but is chilled out... me however needed the chocolate to calm me down! She stresses so much especially when she has to get the needles out.

I will take advantage and clip her claws though. CAroline is a godsend. Even said it was ok for me give her a post-dated cheque for next week rather than have to pay her now.  Poor woman has been on the road since 8am and I don't think I'm the last to see her today.

Sadly CAroline has just left and took Lexy with her. After sedating her she was finally able to examine her belly. Her bladder was empty but very hard. Caroline was able to extract a crystal, but Lexy needs x-rays. Its either very very bad cystitis, or its stones.  If its stones then surgery.

So everyone please pray for my baby. I won't know more until tomorrow.  :(

Caroline just called. Lexy has two large bladder stones which are too big to pass. So she will need surgery. These develop over time and since she's female the likelihood of either blocking her urethra are slim. Surgery is fully booked tomorrow so they will operate Saturday, worst case Monday. In the meantime, my wonderful vet Caroline is bringing her home to me tonight, she will be better at home and then I just have to take her in on the day.

So in a way I'm far more relieved than a little while ago. And my baby will be home tonight to sleep with me.

Thank you everyone..xxx

Thanks peeps. :cuddle:

This will be her 3rd time in surgery in 15 months. Which is why I worry so. I know she'll recover well this is not uncommon surgery, and with a bit of sleep behind me, whilst still worried I'm less anxious.

I left her for work this morning and I got a sleepy wink :)

She's slept off the sedative though still a bit loopy and her pain killer should keep her comfy for the day.

You guys are wonderful. Without your support where are the rest of us?  :Luv2:

Thank you  :Luv2:

Caroline is wonderful. She had been to bed late the night before after an emergency patient visit so only got to bed at midnight. Then she was on the road early yesterday, she got to mine just after 8pm, left at 9:30ish or so, and then off to the clinic with Lexy, and back at mine after 11pm. Poor woman is run ragged, she has a full diary today too.

She's very clinical, very direct and professional but you can see she cares. Poor thing was so tired, there she was offering me comfort as I broke into tears when she showed me the crystals that she extracted.

She's one in a million.

Ruth, Caroline does sound like she's a very good vet, and I reckon she'll look after Lexy to her absolute utmost, but I still know how much you'll worry between now, and getting Lexy back home again safe and sound.  Sending lots of hugs your way.

You know of course that Paddy will be concentrating all his efforts on sending Lexy his telepathic healing purrs to keep her right.   :Luv2:  Yes, he looked very fierce when I said that - very determined. :Luv2:

It appears the sedative has worn off... and apparently I am persona non grata in the house. I have had different variations of the evil eye for the last hour...  :-:

She's using the litter tray, no poops, but considering she's had little to eat not surprised. I'll give her a couple drops of metacam shortly to help with the pain and she will chill for the remainder of the evening.   Ignoring me.

Paddy... you has to rescued me.. Is been poked, prodded and its just downright wrong!  >:(  Mum says Is to go doctor gain soon but that it will maked me feel bettered. I don wanna...  >:(

See.. (ok so Sue and I are losing our minds...  :naughty: )

Hi Desley.  No, no mention of cystaid since its not something that can help this, but Caroline did say a special diet going forward, whether Lexy likes it or not... well...  I guess I have to be disliked for a while then... its going to be a long winter....

VetUK actually do 4 kinds of prescription food (2 I had heard did them in America, but never seen over here till tonight), as well as some pastes and stuff to help the urinary tract. Might be worth a look and check with vet what she thinks might help.

Me too, Des.

Well this morning I'm still the evil witch of the North (well of London at least!) and Lexy is walking all around the house trying to find somewhere to camp. She slept under my bed last night  :( didn't really want to go to her warm bed (with the snugglesafe pad), or mine with my water bottle.  Heating was on and she wasn't interested in radiator bed.

So now she's wondering around the house and ignoring the lovely warm fire in the living room. She keeps looking at me like I'm about to grab her and take her away  :( and then the next minute comes to headbut my hand. Go figure.

Lots of piddles in the tray, no poop still but I've given her chicken last night and this morning to try get her something at least.

I am soooo not looking forward to tomorrow night.

Cystaid could help cos the stones will have irritated her bladder lining.

If she hates the diet, depending on which type of stone she has in there, there are supplements available to acidify the urine so she could continue her normal diet.  ;D good news when you see what the urinary pouches look like  :evillaugh:

I find urinary dry food an interesting topic, the most important thing is water  :-:

As a VN I can 100% say that the wetter the food the better in urinary cases. The dry prescription foods were formulated more for the owners like to feed dry as well as the odd cat that will only eat dry, they have higher moisture than your "average" dry food but obviously not as much as tinned/pouch food. I prefer RCW to Hills, and cats seem to as well. Encouraging a cat to drink more helps a lot, fountains are a good way of doing this.

Well, Lexy is in. She travelled so well bless her, very quiet on her Snugglesafe pad and blankie. I was like a neurotic mum. Pav was at the surgery when I got there so thank god for her because I was anxious. Lexy went off with the lovely nurse and I went off to my sisters.

So fingers crossed for my baby everyone. Surgery is at I believe 1pm tomorrow.

Thank you. I know she will, just can't help feeling anxious. Just called the surgery and the lovely nurse is still there, she said that Lexy was quiet, she'd been under my sweater all day, litter tray there, but most likely won't come out to eat before the food has to be taken away tonight.  She's stressed. I just hope she chills for the night and sleeps.

Ok so surgery is over, she's coming out of it now. They found two stones and the post x-ray shows its clear. Stones have gone away for analysis.  For now she's on fluids and will be tomorrow. Hopefully, all going well tomorrow I can go get her in the evening.

She's been an angel Caroline tells me. She'll be on wet food for about 2 months and we'll re-evaluate it then. Lexy will be uncomfortable for a bit clearly, but overall the pain management should get her through it.

So all well, my baby comes home tomorrow  :cheer:

Thanks everyone for your positive thoughts.

Morning Ruth!   Hope you slept well.  Today's the day - you should have your precious little lass back home, creating a rumpus and checking out the furniture very soon, now.  Paddy tells me he sleeped all last night, thinking 'bout his warrior queen and sending her healing purrs, so she could get a good night's rest.    Can't wait to hear that she's home again.

 :evillaugh: Guess who's home!!!

Yes, Madam Lexy is home, grumpy and a little unsure of things but has set off exploring the house (like its her first time!) and calling me now and again to make sure I'm there.   With an attractive navy blue bandage on her leg and a very very pink belly  :-[ Lexy is more herself than she has been in ages.

I've been given Synulox tablets to give her over the next few days and some renal wet food. Lets hope she likes it because its all she's getting for the next few days.

So now I can be on and off here watching and waiting for her to go to the loo. Have been told what to expect, but there you go.

Saturday appt with Caroline to check on her.  Anyone have any idea if Lexy will get rid of the bandage herself or should I try to cut it off?  Though the latter I don't relish

Thanks everyone for the best wishes. I have been beside myself but now that Lexy is home I feel 100% better than I did and I am sure she does too.

 :Luv2:

I predict with confidence that you will find the bandage, still in one piece, lying around somewhere and be unable to work out how Lexy got it off over her paw  :Luv:

Good to hear that shes back home.

Ah right - I have used that, it seemed to go down well here. Much better when they like their 'special' food. VetUK are still doing free p & p on food, so it will be cheaper from there (I know the RC Sensitivity works out about £2 cheaper).
What a nice present!!

Caroline is visiting Saturday and then I have to go to the surgery with my claim forms and to get more food (they've got some in for me) so will get some now from them and then get the rest from VetUk. Desley do you know if now that she has to have a veterinary diet/prescription food, can this be claimed via insurance?  not being a skinflint...honest  just want to know if this will cover permanently.

Depends on your insurance company Ruth - mine covers prescription food, but only for £200 (and I think that is per condition, not per year - disadvantage to Sainsbury's!!), but some dont cover food.
Title: Re: Lexy back home - bladder stones removed successfully

I have advanced cover with Direct Line so will see if I can do this. It will help with the bills as its just that little bit more expensive than the food she eats now.

Oh well.

She;s not taking her antibiotics so I had to trick her by putting the tablet into a bit of the wet food but I bet it won't be eaten when I get home. I was running late as it was and she just would not let me get the tab into her and she yelped  :'( so I think I hurt her in trying to get her still...

Caroline is in tomorrow and I'm going to ask for the injection... I can't stress her.. even for a few mins it just breaks my heart but I do not want her to get an infection. So will be rushing home to ram the damn pill down her throat even if it breaks my heart.

 >:( Nope. None of it works. And she knows something is up because the little moo is hiding each time I get up.

Tried Dairylea with the tab in it (because Lexy usually just gulps Dairylea down)... little  :censored: licked daintily around the tab and hey presto there it is on the plate.

Tried it in the food like this morning (she ate that), but she won't go near her food now.

Tried it crunched up in the Dairylea, in the food etc... and nothing.. she wopped my hand away and now she won't come near me.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I've wasted 4! tablets tonight.. I have one more here with me and if I catch her unawares when she's sleeping its going down the hatch...element of surprise.

If anyone had a camera following me it would make for very funny watching... ever seen a grown woman walking around behind her cat for hours on end knowing full well she's being given the run around!

Ducha, another who even the vet cannot get them to go in and stay in!!

As for Sasa well Lexy you can at least get close too

 nope. Lexy only likes what Lexy likes. I've tried tricking her, I've tried forcing her to eat it.. nothing.

This morning I feel guilty. I had to go out to sort out the insurance claim with the clinic and pick up more food. Got a box of chicken flavour food and the dry as well to see if she'll have that as a compliment to the rest.

Will order more from VetUk. Caroline is due any minute so I am going to ask her to give her the injection. I can't do this every day, my heart just breaks. Today I have had to withhold food as per Caroline so now I feel extra guilty as now I'm home I feel so guilty, she's so hungry. :( Tried to give her a blob of dairylea and she wasn' interested.

Bah!  What happened to having a cat that would want to eat anything?!  >:(

Well, Caroline is gone and Lexy is fabby!  :Luv:

An anti-biotic injection (a new type lasts 2 weeks) and treats mild infections well was administered. No sedation necessary, Lexy was a little dream...even if she did need scruffing (the indignity!) and clawing my hand after.

The wound looks good, I just need to keep an eye ou it but its a tiny cut (about an inch and a bit long) and it looks nice and tidy. A little bruising but I woulnd't have known if Caroline hadn't pointed it out.

So, now we just wait for the analysis of the stones. The urinalisis was interesting. All the levels were fine, and they found NO crystals so they aren't sturovite stones... some other kind. I can't spell all this and I don't really get it but all I know is my baby is happy now.

She's had something to eat and we are chilling out.

whoooppp!!! Paddy.. is I.  Lexy.. I's good my love. All good  ;) Now we can goes on our bicyclies.  :Luv2:

Am glad to hear the vet has sorted her out - have to say I am dubious with this new injection, but as long as it works for her.
RC renal food can be used to help with calcium oxylate stones, so at least it might give you some variety - comes in chicken and beef flavours.

 :Sad Bye:

Some one had a sort of so so night, a wet tummy this morning and then a good day. But she's been cleaning herself more than normal so I'm hoping its not a recurring infection. She's been so good.

Paddy.. Lexy will write again tomorrow. She's "seeping" now. But she whispered that if Paddy comes calling, she'll wake up pronto  ;)

Caroline thinks its the meds that caused it and to call her tomorrow if her tummy is still runny tomorrow.  I was up at 5am since Madam decided it was time to wake me up by hacking up a furrball. I was dreaming that my carpet didn't need to be washed

Yup - me too Ruth.  Hope Paddy's little Princess is feeling better this morning.

Paddy sends his love of course, but he's not great either.  He wouldn't eat at all again yesterday and was being sick.  Not really interested in anything this morning when I left home.  Have told Tess she's gotta keep her eye out for her little bro.

  to you both

Montague, Capulet - where be these enemies now?  Punished - all are punished  [said in best Richard Burton voiceover....]

or

Where be these enemies? Capulet! Montague!
See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love.
And I for winking at your discords too
Have lost a brace of kinsmen: all are punish'd.

Update from the vet: Caroline called me on the way home today to say that the results of the tests on the two stones were in and they are struvite, not oxalate.

So from one perspective its good we know what to look for.

She needs to be on predominantly wet food going forward, we'll just have to do her teeth for scale and polish once very couple years.

Lexy will have her next x-ray in April when she does her annual MOT, so I'll take her in for that, and then as a precaution we'll do the same x-ray every 6 months for 2-3 years just to make sure that she's really clear. This way we can be sure no more stones are forming.

But for now, we're sticking to the Urinary food, which madam has finally decided is worth her time, with the odd chicken or duck dome she loves.

Overall, Lexy has done well after the surgery, she's much livelier than before the surgery and she's now going to be on a bit of reduced food so she can lose some of the pooch on her belly.  :Luv:

Thats great news ruth, Struvite in general is more common  but i think oxylates were more common for females.  Does she need  a different type of urinary food now then ? or will that one do for either or crystal type, used to be various types of food for different types of stones.

Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on January 26, 2008, 11:40:44 AM
Nah Gill, send Sasa round instead  ;)

Lynn, yes the food she's eating is good for struvite. Vet did think it might be oxalate since she had no crystals, but it turns out that it was struvite which is why we want to monitor. So madam is on a wet rich diet of the RC Urinary S/O... I still get glares but she does eat it as she knows she's not getting anything else  :naughty:

Paddy can't get on the pooter this morning, but he's glad his Faberlush Miss Lexy is getting sorted out.  And he says he doesn't think his beeeyyyoootiful lady needs to lose anything, and he likes her just the way she is.   :ok:  :blow kiss: :blow kiss:  Oh and he also says that Franta is misunderstood by the shy Lady Sasa.

Sasa says fine, she will come .....................anything to get away from Franta..................but has to wait for the red currant to come back from the garage all repaired  ;D

She also says,

Hi Paddy, I am not shy but that Franta is a bad boy and he put his paws and nose in my fur and thats just not on and he sits their like a blue-eyed monster just waiting for me to turn my back on him and thats is not good for us lady cats, as I am sure Miss Lexy would tell you. I am sure you wouldnt do anything like that Paddy, now would you?  ;D

I also look forward to meeting Lexy cos she sounds a lady I would understand  ;D
