This afternoon one of our fosterers went upstairs for about 5 mins, when she came down she noticed her dogs were making a noise by the front door, she opened it to investigate and saw a box., on opening it she saw a cat in a terrible condition, it is very matted and stunk to high heaven and its poor bum was a mess. She immediately took it to the vets, apparently it is elderly and has very few teeth. Every blood test that can be done has been and if tomorrow all is well the vets need to completely shave him/her. Isn't it a shame to think that someone can just leave the little one in a box? Then again at least now it will receive all the help it needs.
-
Ahhh poor baby ... of course we don't know the circumstances .... he/she may be a stray that has been rescued by a well meaning person and at least they left kitty somewhere they knew it could be helped.
Keeping everything crossed that this little soul will be OK and needs nothing more tht a bit of TLC and a shave!
Best get your knitting needles out Ela and get a little jumper ready ;)
-
Poor kitty!
I hope also that he does not have any serious problems identified at his vet check and that he just needs some special love and attention
-
No chip I take it?
-
Oh poor little soul. I hope the little one will be ok and heading for a lovely new life.
-
Poor old thing. to warm up this oldie. Hopefully the blood tests will come back with good news.
-
I do hope that this willmhave a good ending for this poor cat and know that your people will do everythung they can
-
Aww, that is so sad. Fingers crossed for good test results, and that they can enjoy the love and attention they will now get.
-

Me knit, you jest, it will need to be kept warm this winter not in 10 yrs time.
-
See pic, cat on vets table, on the large version you can see the fleas
-
Apparently late last night the vet phoned and said that all tests have proved negative and that she (we now know the sex) is just very run down and needs building up. Today she will be completely shaved and then they may be able to tell if she is a full Persian, at the moment it is not easy to tell.
-
OMG how did they let her to get to this state?? :(
-
poor little thing, I'll buy her a sweater if it helps!
-

Well I usually use sleeves of woolly jumpers. with a few holes cut out. Not very trendy I know. Although the vet thinks they will have to completly shave her, you never know they may be able to save some fur if it is not attached solid to the body. I will let you know.
-
I have just spoken to Suzanne and the little ones new name is Nikki.
-
it really makes me sad how persians seem to end up like this, I am probably misinformed but of all the pedigrees they seem to suffer most - why get a long haired cat that you can't/won't brush - my friend took on one from her sister in law a few months back - oh he hates being brushed so is sent in a couple of times a year to be shaved - she is now brushing him daily so it seems that effort was all that was required in this case, not always the way I know
-
I always remember one I took in and called him Mr T he was huge, unneutered and absolutely stank, we had nowhere to put him so placed him in the bathroom for the night, by the time Monday came the stench had reached the whole house. The fur on his neck and face was so matted that one eye was pulled much lower than the other.
-
poor babe, I'm sure he was much happier by the time he left you (and much less smelly!!)
-

I am sure when Nikki's butt area has been shaved SHE will smell much sweeter.
-
I am sure that Nikki will be extremely pretty when her fur grows back and so pleased that the tests are negative, whats her estimated age?
-
Poor little kitty. Hope she recovers well. I love persians, but wouldn't get one because I don't think I would cope with the grooming.
-
and that's exactly my point - I've only done one weeks work experience at the vets and saw 9 that week for dematting/shaving I dread to think how many Lynn and Amanda must have seen
-
Glad Nikki is getting the love and attention she deserves now. And brilliant news with regards tothe results at the vets. :)
-
whats her estimated age
Note sure yet, we think a 'Golden oldie'; however her poor condition may be due to neglect.
-
Bit more info, Nikki is going on strong antibiotics as she has a slight infection. but all the bloods did not show really bad problems, but is is very wet on the back end and under that fur is just skin and bone, apparently now they don't really want to put her stress her too much so a vet nurse is spending much time with her trying to gently comb out what they can, but as a last resort if not successful they will need to shave her later today
-
Ela, if she's placid, could they just gently cut some of the fur away with scissors? or are they thinking they'll need to sedate her and shave? With fur as matted as that its likely its falling away from the skin anyway and they would be able to see where mats meet skin, so with careful snipping its possible, although takes longer.
This makes me so angry, like everyone else has said, I've seen some bad ones in my time, admittedly the worst one was owned by someone who'd had a mental breakdown and just couldnt cope with anything anymore, never mind a longhaired cat's coat. But, the ones with no excuse......well, I just bite my tongque and get on with the work in hand. Some are ashamed, many are in denial and still expect you to believe that they comb the cat everyday! >:(
-
or are they thinking they'll need to sedate her and shave?
Yes and they would like to avoid that if possible,
-
OMG the evil :censored:
It is disgusting that they let her get in to that condition and to dump her when she is getting on in her years. How evil can these :censored: be.
At least one saving grace she was dumped on your doorstep in a box, not on the highway on her own to freeze to death or get killed.
The poor poor baby. At least now she will have the best care and will find a loving home. Remember FooFoo? - the state she was in? (DD will, I still smile at her in her baby cardigan). Look at her now.
Tons of love to this little lady.
Note to her. You are safe and loved now sweetheart, No more suffering for you baby xxxxxxxxx
-
:( It's always heartbreaking with these things happen and maddening!!! >:(
Like many of you I never understand why people get a long haired cat if they don't know how to look after it or are just not willing to spend the time grooming them every day!
I really feel for this little one... especially at such an old age. This is the time of her life when she should be getting pampered and enjoying life... not suffering and in pain. grrrr >:( these :censored: make me mad.
As you say tho... on the upside at least they left her where she would be found by someone responsible and get the treatment that she needs. Big relief to hear that the test results are negative.. great news. Lets just hope that her ordeal doesn't prove too much for the little one.
Sending lots of big  to Nikki from al of us here for a speedy recovery and a brighter future! :Luv2:
look forward to hearing how she's doing later.
-
This is the time of her life when she should be getting pampered and enjoying life... not suffering and in pain.
That is exactly what she will not get loads of TLC
-
Poor Nikki, my second wish I had more room moment of the day - glad she is in safe hands
-
Poor Nikki. I'm disgusted that anyone could leave anything in that sort of state.
glad she's in safe hands now
-
So glad Nikki's results are negative ... like I said earlier we don't and probably never will know the circumstances of how she ended up on your doorstep .... you shouldn't automatically assume she has been dumped out of malice or neglect.
-
.... you shouldn't automatically assume she has been dumped out of malice or neglect.
In all probability she was someones cat and they dumped her, had she been a stray I am sure someone would have knocked on the door and said so.
-
Sam, we might not know the circumstances, but to have a longhaired cat in that state and then to just leave them in a box rather than physically hand them over says a lot.
I would love a longhaired cat, but not sure I could cope with one, both with teh grooming and my asthma, so I wont adopt one will I can foster one to check - and would you believe I have been fostering for over 3 years and not had a longhaired in yet, something has stopped me taking in everyone we have been asked about!!
-
I think some people are ignorant of the work involved with longhaired cats.
It's easy when they like being groomed. I used to have a maine coon type moggy who loved being brushed so much that if I was late doing it (allotted time 10.pm) he would sit and stare at me till the penny dropped. He was a pleasure to brush.
Maybe it should be compulsory for breeders to stress the enormous task a longhaired 'buyer' is taking on.
-
I agree completely HK, we have had a couple of semi-longhaireds in as adults who have hated being groomed, maybe they would have been better if they had been used to it as kittens.
-
Poor Nikki. Still, at least now she is with Chesterfield CP and her luck has changed.

Most definitely, I should get another pic soon but we have been very busy, (Christmas Fayre today, and tomorrow some of the fosterers are on the Chesterfield Market 10 am - 7 pm.) I understand Nikki has fur in her head and feet. Eric (vet) opened our Christmas Fayre this morning and told me Nikki was so thin.
My goodness we need the money we have had a bad few weeks, we took in a new foster cat about 3 weeks ago and he looked so well, after about 3 days he started with a bladder problem and since then he is getting worse and worse and the vets cannot find the cause and has spent so much time at the vets. He seemed to recover a little, came home for a couple of days and then was found collapsed in his pen again, tonight he is on a drip again. we just do not know what the outcome will be but we must give him every chance. His pic is on the gallery. Name Mr BB
-
sending loving healing vibes for Mr BB, hope hes on the mend soon poor baby
Love to Nikki as well  poor baby
-
Maybe it should be compulsory for breeders to stress the enormous task a longhaired 'buyer' is taking on.
Most good breeders do more than that, they actually show the new owner how to groom, bath and blow dry, explain how the coat will change from kittenhood into adulthood, seasonal changes etc, etc.
-
how is Nikki today Ela, I've been thinking about her
-
I understand she is nice and warm sleeping in front of a fire with her new coat on, well a coat mad for a jumper sleeve.
She is not out of the woods yet, but everything is being done to give her the chance af a happy retirement.
-
aww bless her
-
Glad to hear she is doign well at the moment.
-
Nikki without her jumper
-
awww, look at her bless
-
poor little Nikki, I'm so glad she is in your hands
-
Just caught up with this. Poor Nikki. As terrible as they are, at least they had the sense to leave her with you. Now at least, she can have the kind of life she deserves. I hope their house is infested with fleas :evillaugh:
-
Aww, the poor baby.
-
Just to see how is Nikki doing, i hope she is enjoying her self in front of the fire and her fur is growing. :Luv:
-
how is the lovely Nikki doing Ela?
-
She is slowly recovering from her trauma thankyou.
-
good :) I was wondering too
-
I am afraid I have some terrible news, Suzanne her fosterer has just rung to to say she has just found Niki dead. It appears she died in her sleep this afternoon. It is so sad but at least during the last few days of her life she knew what love and care was.
-
So sorry to hear about this Ela
:RIP: Nikki
-
Ela Im so sorry to hear this
:RIP: Nikki Nite Nite baby xx
-
so sorry to hear that Ela, but as you say... at least she got to know love care and compassion in her last few weeks.
-
That is so sad, Ela. Still, Niki died in the warm, not matted, hungry or thirsty.
-
:'( Ahhh how awful. So pleased Niki was able to receive lots of love, cuddles and a nice warm fire in her last few weeks and nice that she passed quietly in her sleep.
Big hugs to you and Suzanne
RIP Niki ... play hard at the bridge little lady :Luv2:
-
At least Nikki knew love, warmth and comfort in her last few days, pass on hugs to your fosterer Ela, I know these times are hard for them, but Nikki did not suffer and, though it doesn't sound right in words, it's a nice way for them to go, rather than in pain and suffering. :Luv2:
:RIP: Nikki, your memory will live on, that I can promise.
-
Aww no. Do they have any idea why? As it's been said quite a lot, at least genuine love and compassion was known by Nikki before she went.
RIP Nikki. :RIP:
-
Aww, I am so sorry to hear this, but at least she got to go peacefully in a warm, loving house, and not out on the streets. RIP little one.
-
Do they have any idea why?
No Nikki was nice and cosy when Suzanne went out and when she came back in she was dead in almost the same position, so it looks like she just went peacefully in her sleep.
-
oh Ela I am really sorry to hear this, she had really touched me I don't know why and kept popping into my head - poor baby at least she had some comfort in her last weeks
-
So sorry Ela,
I can only repeat what others have said that at least she passed in a warm bed and had been well fed and was loved
Poor baby :'(
-
Sorry Ela
I can only echo what has been said already.
Sweet dreams little one
-
Nikki, your memory will live on, that I can promise.
I have spoken to Suzannes husband this morning and told him about the offer, he has just rung me back and said that Suzanne has asked me to thank you very much.
-
Do they have any idea why?
No Nikki was nice and cosy when Suzanne went out and when she came back in she was dead in almost the same position, so it looks like she just went peacefully in her sleep.
That's probably one of the nicer ways to go. Glad she left peacefully and was content.
-
OMG Ela I am so so sorry to hear about Nikki,
Bless that darling little girl.
Run free sweetheart, free from pain, with a beautiful coat and a full belly.
At least this little darling knew love and warmth in her final days.
Night Night little one xxxxxxxxxxx
 Ela xx
-
I am so sorry to hear about this, poor little girl but she was loved at the end and was warm and comfy
RIP Nikki
-
:'( what a shock!
oh dear, I'm so sad and sorry, poor thing
glad she had some love at the end.
Bless you sweetheart xx
-
That's really sad news. It sounds like she was peaceful and comfortable though and if there's a best way to go, then that has to be the way.
Hope her foster carer is ok
