Title: Lexy has sore bum - looks a bit raw - Help with ideas pls.
Post by: Kittybabe (Ruth) on November 12, 2007, 22:14:14 PM
Hiya

Lexy has had a mild bout of cystitis. I say mild as she has no bleeding, but has spent less time going to the loo today than over the weekend. She came for a quick cuddle and I noticed she needed a bum wipe (she's not been great cleaning up after a wet poo), so I got a toilet tissue slightly damp and wiped her bum and noticed her growling.

Then when I had a good look (forgive me this) but her bum is normally dark (as she's a black cat), but her anus looks raw, a bit pink and slightly swollen. She's not pooed the proper amount daily, maybe two poos today, smaller and darker than normal. Slightly more wet but still firm.

What do I do for her pls? Tonight at least. She's happy enough, playing etc, but its just this. Could this be normal from going a bit too often to poo, or should I call vet tomorrow?

Thanks for help.

You know Lexy best and I do not know if you have done this wiping before but I think most cats would growl?

i suspect but its only a guess but pssiblyb you are ruight that its going from one situation to another that has caused it but she should be ok.
i reckon keep an eye on her and if it worsens then see a vet.

Thanks. Because she doens't appear to be in pain, and she goes to the loo (just did and left the air blue and green  ) and whilst in the tray didn't make any noises to show pain. She never growls at me when I wipe her bum, just gives me that filthy look for messing with her.  :tired:

She's alert and bright, I'm just concerned that it didn't look normal. I hope its nothing.  :scared:

sounds like she is a wee bit constipated ruth and whilst her bottom prob isnt sore really it sounds abit tender when you touch it so perhaps a wee tear or slightly inflamed from straining to pass the faeces.

Did she not have mild constipation before and was that around the time of cystitis bout ?  I wonder if the cystitis makes her hold back on passing faeces aswell ?

katalax/lactulose would help i think.

I'd possibly be thinking about the recurrant cystitis though as that seems to be every couple of months.

I know you were away this time and then it occured, do the other bouts also co-incide with you going away? If so likely stress related maybe?

She's pooing regularly though Lynn, so not stopped up at all, its just the type of poo. She hasn't eaten normally since I've been back, she's eating but happy to miss food for abit. I had to throw out some food yesterday because she didn't even bother going to eat, she was happy sleeping.  I think the amount of poo has to do with the amount of dry she's not eaten (normally has a bit)

I've got some lactulose, and will see tomorrow in case she does stop up. I can't see blood though, and when I wiped none come away, but that could also be me just being too quick because she growled at me.

Poor baby, I hope this isn't a major issue for her. Hate to think she's suffering discomfort in any way. Wish I had a safe ointment to wipe on her in the meantime. This is only the second time, last time I think was July? August maybe that's she's had cystitis but me being away seems to be what we think caused it as this time she's not bleeding.

Poor Lexy  :'(  I'm pretty sure Sudocrem is safe to use on cats, I would check with the vets first or Lynn may know but I have a distant memory or maybe it's old age  :innocent:  of a vet suggesting I use it on one of mine for something  :shify:

I personally wouldnt put sudocrem near the anus, it stings like hell if you put it on broken skin or inflammed mucous membranes.

I'd give the lactulose tonight ruth if your still up and read this, even 1 ml .  Remember it IS NOT a laxative but a stool softener so it is totally safe for lexy.

Also she can be abit constipated without actually being bunged up, infact its possible to have diarrhoea and be constipated so it can present in many different ways.

I would work out if you can all her bouts of either or /both cystitis & constipation episodes this year, also keep a diary from now on, I am wondering if when you are away for a few days it might be worth discussing with your vet if she could have some type of covering anti inflammatry or something even if it was for a trial 1 time you are away to see if that reduced the tendancies.  2 or 3 days of antinflammatorys if it was every 2 or 3 months certainly wouldnt do her any harm.

Yeah the sadistic ones do  :shify:   Its fab for minor grazes and burns or even as a barrier cream but stings like hell on baby rash type inflamed skin or general chafing  :-[  (dont ask  :innocent:)

I have seen some mum put it on their babies with red raw bleeding bums and the poor things screaming like they were having boiling water poured over them and ive felt like asking them cant the f'in well see its the cream making their babes scream like that

(ps E45 creme is another baddie when it comes to being a skin irritant believe it or not ! )

If anything was needed just some plain old vaseline.

My goodness is that right about E45, I knwo my sister said it was no good for her and she had eczma but I use to use it all the time for my psorisis but It useed to make my skin sweat so ended up with it all over everything.

havent used for a while now but I thought it was meant to be safe for skins?

thats what i thought gill and bought it for bad skin on my face once, thought my skin was on fire with it though and then the pharmacist in the chemist said alot of folk couldnt use it, i like you thought it was meant to be ph neutral or something but i'll never have it in the house again.

 :thanks: everyone.

I gave Lexy some Lactulose in her food this morning, I must get some eye droppers from chemist though. I just covered a teaspoon with it and then let three large drops fall off the spoon.

Will see when I get home. thanks for the support guys. x

Our vet gave me a syringe when I had to give Blip Metacam.  Yours might do too?

Just caught up with this, by the way, and hope you can find out what's going on, pronto.  If Lexy were human, I would suspect stress.

Actually I have a syringe for Metacam at home too! :stupid: didn't even think to use that!

Thanks Christine.

I do suspect a mixture of stress and diet have caused this.

Fingers crossed she is better today. Molly has Lactulose, and I just drizzle it over her food, dont bother with syringes or anything - not even the lid anymore, as it is sooo sticky!!

Hello everyone. Thank you for the concern. Well.... Lexy is still struggling, but she is pooping every day maybe twice now a day, small amounts, long thin poos at times. The lactulose at least is working I think. But she still has to have some every meal time.. I've reduced it slightly (she had 5 mls last night) today, so we will see. She's fine in temperament, but is a little clingy.

But other than that I am just watching. She's def not as stopped up as I thought she was, and she has no cystitis at all (if she ever did).

Well they are really on the move. Like an eejit, because she only left me one small dollop this morning in the try, I put some lactulose on her food.

Well at about 3pm, Madam went for a pooh and she had a good un!  And sadly some got stuck to her trousers near her bum... the one that is still a little sensitive (albeit not red and raw anymore).

So I spent the better part of an hour trying to encourage her not to skid mark my cream carperts... and following along with my Vanish spray and paper towels to clean up after her... and then finally she was lulled into a false sense of security, came to sleep on me, and whilst she was snoozing, I gently started to clean the soft pooh from her trousers.  It had got nice and matted into the fur so I had to be really gentle, with lots of tissue  . Now you have to know that's love because how many people could sit there with pooey tissues in their hand, and continue to clean.

Lexy did get roused by this and decided it was time to growl and let me know she was not happy, but thankfully I got rid of it and she spent a good 20 mns cleaning her bum.

:tired:  She won't talk to me now. But at least the lactulose can be put away in the cupboard where it belongs!

Thanks everyone for the best wishes and thoughts. I don't like to see her when she's not 100%.

So glad that things are moving at last Ruth ;D On saying that very sorry that you had a trousers problem. That certainly is love sitting there cleaning those trousers :Luv: I can just picture Lexy in a huff as she did not want her trousers interfered with >:(
