Title: Wonky walk...should I be worried?
Post by: unseeliechylde on November 08, 2007, 22:46:17 PM
I've noticed over the last few days that our new girl, Skye (5 months, and a rescue - had her a week so far) seems to have slightly wonky back legs.  When she walks, her back feet step one in front of the other, and her hips / pelvis swing and dip down with each step. It's very subtle, not particularly pronounced, but it's definately noticeable.
We are taking her for her check-up and vaccinations tomorrow, so will of course ask the vet, but wondered what you guys thought? Riley definately didn't have this at 5 months, so I'm guessing it's not entirely normal, but I'm not sure if it's something that will be a long term concern, or whether she is likely to grow out of it now that she is on a good diet?
I don't know if its malnutrition, or something more serious - should I request an x-ray to be sure?

I think this is one for the vets, they can see it, not us. I wouldnt request an x-ray, if your vets feel she needs it, they will suggest it, but I suspect that as she is being neutered next week, they will look into it more then, and would prob do x-rays then as they need sedating for them (or if you own my cat, highest sedation then general anaesthetic!!)

One of my babes Emily is hock kneed on her back legs, she or I should say he  :-[   walks a little odd but the vet said it's nothing to worry about.  I would ask the vet to give her a once over but if it's not causing her any problems, I wouldn't worry too much.  Sometimes kittens are born with bone abnormalities and as long as she is pain free, she should be fine  :Luv:

I'll certainly check with the vet - just a few moments ago, I was following her around trying to film her using my digital camera, like a complete fool!  :-[ She stopped and gave me the most withering look, like she was saying, "what are you at now, you daft primate?" Oh well, at least I can show the vet what I mean - tho they may give me the exact same look, "what soft of nutty owner films their cat's wonky legs?!"
Hopefully it's just a minor developmental problem, like you say Dawn - she certainly runs around and wrestles happily without so much as a second thought!

Well, I had her at the vet today, and showed them the film of her wonky legs - thankfully the vet was only mildly amused and didn't think I was a total nut (or if she did, she hid it well!). They are of the opinion that it is nothing serious - she has just developed a little bit oddly, and she should have no problems in the future.  :) As the vet described it, "she's just a bit pigeon-hocked"!

it was an interesting experience - being vaguely embarassed, relieved and amused at the same time!
