Well as Im off work me and Barry have been bonding alot. The other day I was stroking him and felt a bit of a lump on his tail about 2 inches from his back end. He let me feel it but it was impossible to tell if it was new or just had'nt spotted it before. Well 5 mins ago he got in bed with me (yes I know Im lazy, but its hard to walk when you kneecap has been operated on) he was purring and seemed normal. I felt his tail with my hand(softly) and he went mad and attacked my hand (bloody mess) he then hissed the mother of all hisses!! Now I get along with Bazza but he must be in real pain if he is attacking me like that. He seems no different to normal. He could have been bitten by some dirty cat or it could be infected??? dont thinks its broken as it works ok.
I have booked hi into the vets tomorrow but does anyone have any ideas what it could be??
-
If he lets you check for a puncture wound. If it was infected he would probably be off his food as well. I think the vet visit is in order regardless though.
Other things, possibly a cyst (? though could be talking out of my tootie on this one). Has he caught his tail a door at all do you know?
-
Sorry to hear that Barry attacked you, and I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with his tail, and hope that your hand is OK too .... defo a good thing you're checking in with the vets tomorrow, let us know what they say.
-
It feels like a lump or maybe scar tissue over a wound. If I put my hand anywhere near it he now gets ready to attack. His tail moves but I think its very sore as I sneakily tried to feel it and he did a small meow and I hardly touched him. He also does that thing now when i go to stroke him, he lowers his back so I cant and seems very cautious. In regards to his eating, he has always been fussy and sits outside his food cupboard, even if he has just eaten half of whats in his bowl. He has had his jabs etc so does that mean he should be less likely to have an disease/infection??
Its like living with a ferrel cat!!!! Hate it!
-
 Hope your hands ok, and Barry has settled a bit, hope its nothing serious good luck at vets for tomorrow
-
Poor Barry - it must be sore for him. Hope its nothing too serious :ahh:
-
Poor Barry, hope that you get on well at the vet tomorrow

The other day I was stroking him and felt a bit of a lump on his tail about 2 inches from his back end.
Rocky has a lump on his tail 2in down from his bum - The vet thinks his is just a cyst.
Rockys doesnt hurt him though, he shows no reaction when i touch it.
I would have thought Barrys could be an absess because he is showing pain in the area.
He has had his jabs etc so does that mean he should be less likely to have an disease/infection??
Basically NO ! (sorry)
Having had his jabs will not stop him from getting an infection. If he was been Vac for FeLV it would stop him from catching that but as theres no vac for FIV there is always a chance when a cat has been fighting that they can catch it (although dont worry as its very unlikely)
Best just to take him to the vets tomorrow xxx
-
Id guess abcess, common place to get bitten whilst fleeing the scene.
If you got bitten keep an eye on it, any swelling go to Dr for antibiotics, and knowing Drs probably tetanus (is that spelt right?)
Has anyone ever caught tetanus from a cat bite :-: overkill me thinks
-
Its like livin with a stranger!! I would have taken him today but I can barely walk!! Im off for Physio now for my poorly knee! He is normally so soft but I always knew he could be tough, but it was a blurr of claws and the best hiss you have ever heard when he went for me, I reckon he did it fighting a badger or something, maybe even two!!!!
Thanks for all the kind words and I will keep you informed. Vets = Loud meowing, pooing and maybe even sick, he hates my car!!
-
poor barry it sounds very painful and i would also guess at an abcess.
i hope the vet vist goes well and he gets well soon . as someone else said keep an eye on your hand and if there is anythng at all unusual happening with it , straight to doctor.
-
Poor barry - hope he's ok & your hand / knee both improve!
-
Hand is fine, and knee is getting there.
Barrys been snoozing all day and If he does not come down for the Football he must be ill!! lol
I even tried to get him stoned on catnip to relieve the pain but tesco's had run out!!
-
Any news on Barry?
-
His appointment is at 5.45pm.
He did come and sleep with me this morningut now he is up he is weird. I noticed when he jumped off the bed his tail bent towards his back and he let a little yelp out.
It looks a bit weird but i presume he is holding it in the most comfortable position.
God help the vet, he is going to get attacked!
-
If he was been Vac for FeLV it would stop him from catching that
But bear in mind NO vacc is 100% !
I do not know of anyone nor ever heard of anyone catching tetanus from a cat bite yet its the first thing the docs go on about , however cat bite or scratch fever is VERY common and very sore and can be quite serious .. a good cleaning and antibiotics + painkillers do the job however sometimes you have to practically demand antibiotics from the docs but its really important to get them.

 Hope all goes well at the vets this evening, poor Barry
-
Its like watching a human with piles! he has to gently place his bum down, so not to trap his tail. He also likes licking it alot.
I cant wait till the cat box gets here, so he can turn into the letter 'X'
-
Poor Barry he sounds like he is in so much pain.....hope the vet can help him to feel better quick.
-
Well after waiting 40 mins with a stinky cat(took a poo in his box) we finally get to see the vet. I showed him the area and he said he would have to get a nurse as he was going to go mad when he touches it. Basically he had a big abcess on his tail. All im going to say is when he took him out the back he made the loudest howls and hisses I hve ever heard. He shaved his tail and popped the abcess. He said I need to go back in 2 days and if its not healing he may have it chopped off!!!! Gutted
He is no back home and has a collar on which makes him walk backwards and generally into things!! He walks across the lounge and straight into the sofa, its like he is blind! His collar does not stop him licking it tho, so Im not sure what to do. I got him cat nip so Im gonna try and get him stoned arrgghhhhh
What am I meant to do with a big bag of catnip??? looks like a big bag of dope!!!! Any Ideas? just ripped his mouse open and poured a load in - He is not a catnip cat!! lol
-
Sorry to hear about poor Barry. Th collars do tend to make them walk in all directions but he will get a bit more used to it. Barry should not be able to get at his tail with the collar on so wondering if it needs adjusting. Have you tried valarian root might make Barry go crazy
-
I'm sorry hear that Barry attacked you , that lump that you found doesn't sound to clever, I would definatley get him checked into a vets A.S.AP. :(
-
Poor Barry - they might have to amputate? :(
-
They said if it heals they wont need to, but they said I need to make sure he does not lick it. He is constantly licking his tail, the collar seems a couple of inches to short, as its as tight as it goes Im not sure what to do. the edge of the collar digs in when he tries to lick it and he yelps!! I cant sit up all night!

As long as the cone is on and you know that he can't take it off, I'm sure he will be ok, I know it might sound easy but you do need sleep.
-
Ahhhhh poor baby ... fingers crossed now the abscess has been popped it will be a bit more comfortable for him and hopefully it will heal ok.
-
have they given you any antibiotics for him or given him an injection? Kocka was allowed to lick hers, wasnt on tail though cos as disgusting as it sounds the licking cleans the pus out.
I do hope it gets better
-
Awwww poor baby, hope it mends ok
-
He has had an injection, and I have antibiotics and painkillers plus I also have to clean every day and cover it in some gel to help it stay clean. He was crying before( he had tears in his eyes). The Collar is not working, he can still lick it, and its distressing him. I have taken it off and watched him, he seems to lick the hair around it rather than the abcess, maybe as its been shaved. He seems alot more relaxed and can now put his head down and sleep, before he was walkin back and forth and generally looked stressed out. Looks like Im gonna stay up with him for a bit.
-
Get in touch with the vet and tell him about the collar. Thinking about you and poor Barrie
-
Maybe he is better off without the collar then, its hard to tell from this end.
I feel so sorry for him and yes you should do the right thing and sleep on the floor next to him ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Poor boy, hope he gets better soon.
-
He is no longer interested in his tail!! :wow: He is snoozing on the stairs and seems alot more like himself since that collar came off. I did get some pics of him in it tho!!!
I might ring the vet and just say he seems alright without it , saying that he did say to put it on if he persist's in licking it, which he is'nt anymore. I think Im just worried about having a tail-less cat.
What would his balance be like??? He is rubbish anyway, as everytime on your lap for a cuddle his legs end up all over the place.
-
I hope it wonnt come to that. Archies tail was amputated in April and he managed fine without i His balance is good and he turns his stump round in a full circle which is rather alarming :evillaugh: I am sure Barry will be Ok
-
Hope Barry's feeling better this morning. Poor little soul. Must be very strange and confusing for him. Here's hoping he can hang on to his tail.
-
Hiya how's he doing this morning, hope everything goes ok for him :Luv2:
-
Fingers crossed it gets better, and doesn't need to be amputated - have to say it sounds a bit extreme to be telling you that straight away, there has to be ways of dealing with abscesses without that for all the ones that are in other places.
-
Big hugs to Barry this morning. How's your knee doing SR? Managing to cope OK? Must take care of yourself as Barry in big trouble otherwise.
-
Morning hope you are both well today, and managed to get a sleep
Is Barry taking his meds ok, hope the tail is looking better
-
Last night was the first night I have slept with my bedroom door open and I still have my toes!! :wow:
He came in at 4am and at 6am and slept next to me like a human, obviously i had little sleep during those two hours for fear of squashing his tail. :tired: This morning I gave him his drops and tablet and he took them like a good boy. Im going to clean his wound at dinner time when the OH gets back from work, i cant wait!! :scared: At present he is sleeping next to me and has been since 8am, yes I know we're both lazy but why not be, were both broke! His abcess looks darker and less angry as it did yesterday which must be a good sign. Someone said something about the vet being a bit extreme and I have to agree I joked he might have to have it cut off before I went(who feels horrible now hey), so I do agree with you. He said the reason is because if it gets to his bones then there would be no way of it healing.
One things for sure, cats look daft with shaven tails!!!
For those who asked about the knee, its driving me mad, i dont have enough power in my leg too stretch and that is really annoying especially when you spend as much time sleeping as i do!
Barry likes the idea of driving but in practice he actually :censored: himself!!

Phenoix your babe is beautiful whats his/her name
-
:) Tabby she 10yrs old
-
WOW Tabby is a stunner she looks a right cheeky miss, she looks like a cat my friend had when we were growning up,
her cat but it preferred me  anyway she was called Tibby she was a gentle babe (sometimes)
-
Glad Barry is taking his tablets like a good boy :) Hope his tail heals with no need for an amputation, have to agree that was a bit premature of the vet to even mention it.
Great pic but I noticed something and couldn't let it pass.... Barry doesn't seem to be wearing a seatbelt :scared:
-
from the suond of it i think the vet was prob just making things aware that he may need to prob not ment n e halm by it
-
Love the picture of Barry driving! Hope he doesn't use the mobile while he's at it - specially with him not wearing a belt ! :)
Pheonix, Tabby's lovely. Good to hear that a lack of tail doesn't hold her back.
-
Ive got some ace pics of him in his 'Special collar' on! but cant get them of my phone! arghhh
He is doing better, were off to the vets at 6pm and hopefully hewill say is fine. He lets me dab it and put the gel on without even hissing so its obviously less painful. Its also sort of healing but still a bit makes me cringe cleaning it!
Cheers for all the comments. :thanks:
I kind of prefer him without a collar at all, shuuuuh :innocent: ;) :scared:
We had stopped when that pic was taken, he was checking out my parking!!!
-
We had stopped when that pic was taken, he was checking out my parking!!!
"Hey mum - shall we get a taxi to the kerb....?" :evillaugh:
-
Good luck at the vets  sounds as if he's feeling less pain when you are cleaning it and a bit more relaxed about you touching it , clever boy Barry
-
Well Barrys Tails lives to fight another day! :wow: ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
Vet says e is fine and just to keep on the antibiotics until they run out.
He still managed to poo on the way there and on the way back, and it was chucking it down so we could not have the window open!
-
Woo Hoo :wow: Great news :)
Shame about the poos :evillaugh: On a poo story note... When the boys went for their first jabs I didn't have a sense of smell whatsoever for medical reasons. I was in reception waiting to pay and Lukey had done a tiny little poo, there were about 5 people waiting and they all started talking rather loudly about how the vets didn't normally smell but how the stench today was unbearable. I had to confess to the smell coming from my tiny 10 week old kitten and they all went rather red and started studying their shoes :evillaugh:
-
Sorry to hear about the poo , but hey what great news about Barry :cheer:
-
Good news about barry! :wow:
-
So pleased Barry and his tail will continue to live together ;D
-
Thought Id get a photo of him in his carrier before he never goes in it again!!
