Noticed last night that my housecat Max wasn't holding his tail up. He wouldn't let me touch it, but was his normal self otherwise. Still jumping about chasing things and eating so I decided to leave him and see how it was today. Well he will let me touch it now and he is holding it up a bit more now but it is still not right. The problem seems to be further down as he holds it up at the base, thankfully. He hates the vets and will have to be sedated to be examined but I think if it still isnt right tomorrow it will have to be off to the vets. Most places online say there is not much the vet can do and it will heal itself but am not sure really. Anyone know much about droopy tails??? Can't imagine how he did it, unless it was playing with our other cat. They do like to play fight, but would have thought I would have heard him yelp if he had serioulsy hurt himself.

It sounds good that Max is able to hold his tail up to a certain extent, but I would get it checked at the vet tommorow, although I realise this will be difficult for Max.
Archie dislocated his tail a few months ago and the injured part just hung there and he was unable to move it.due to nerve damage. When I took him to the vet I was told that sometimes a tail can heal but in Archie's case it did not and he had to have it amputated. Saying that I feel that Max has not injured it in that way.
Best of luck

I am now wondering if it could be an absess. He tries to hold it up when he sees me but can only get it so far .. although that is still an improvement on yesterday when it just hung down .. when I held it up to it's full height earlier he hissed so it might be an absess underneath. God only knows how the vet will be able to examine him though! But he is happily jumping up and down of the worktops and purring and headbutting me roght now!

Does he go out side? If so he may have beenn bitten.
he definately needs to see a vet and if it is an abcess, have it treated or he will become very ill.
-
No he is a housecat. My other two are strays who moved in so they both have outside access. Max play fights with Nemo our newest little girl so it is possible he has hurt his tail in that way .. he doesn't want to play with her right now. Just odd how we heard nothing then he came running into the room with his tail drooping. I am making an appointment for the vet tomorrow to get it checked out. The vet will have to sedate him though .. better sort out the credit card!

Wishing you the best of luck I am sure Max has something that can be sorted out

Good to see you again Teresa, how is Ollie? Good luck with him at the vets, he might surprise you and not need to be sedated.

I'd pop along to the vet pretty hastily - you really don't want it to abcess, which it undoubtedly will if it's due to a bite. One of my lot [I suspect Lily], bit Imogens tail and as she's hardly Miss Congeniality at the best of times, I didn't spot it until the poor thing had developed an abcess.
Yes, the vet put her on antibiotics but I still had to manually drain the abcess every day and keep it nice and clean - even when you know it's helping them, you know it's hurting them as well and that's horrible :(.
To the vet with you

good luck at the vets... hope to hear good news! :)

Took Max to the vet first thing this morning. He had to be sedated but it is good news. Vet says it is damage to the soft tissue and not a break. Checked his bladder/bowels and bothwere empty so that was good. So Max is on antibiotics, pain relief and anti inflamatries. He has to go back in two weeks unless I am really worried. He seems happy enough and can lift his tail a bit higher now. Thanks everyone!

Glad that things werent too serious for poor Max, and that everyone is getting on well - do you get to sleep in your own bed at night, or are you still on the sofa?
-
