Title: Bonfire night ... how are your cats?
Post by: scattycat on November 03, 2007, 17:14:00 PM
Just wondered how peoples cats are/have been as this weekend will be the one when all the fireworks go off.

We've had ours in since 4pm, but thankfully this year dont have the idiot who used to live 2 doors down that had fireworks which were certainly not 'garden' fireworks - the size of the sticks the rockets were on were huge - I know our cats were a bit edgy - two went under the bed the other spent the night on my husbands lap.

Saw that our Tescos was doing a BOGOF on fireworks, as loads of people were walking out with huge numbers of them.

I do love fireworks, especially when I was a kid, but as I'm now a cat owner I put them first - we even stay in and not go to professional displays incase someone sets off loads - is that sad or what lol

Fortunately, only one of the 6 here seem to be bothered, Tiger seemed fine the odd time I popped down after fireworks had gone off, but as soon as I shut the curtains, she hid behind the settee again, so am leaving hte TV on for her when I go out - I hate the fact my birthday is so close to bonfire night, I do hate leaving them, but also want to celebrate!!

So far so good SC but really unimpressed with Tescos BOGOF  >:(

You're not sadn at ll.  I also adore fireworks but radio on, catflap shut, all curtains drawn so, for tonight at any rate, not expecting to see much. Scaring animals is just not a nice thing to do. We might venture out tomorrow for a short time if the boys are OK this evening.

Have a super birthday Desley  :drink:

No its not sad, I used to stay at home with Kocka, so that was 10 yrs and only fireworks I saw were thise from neighbours when they wre bouncing off windows.

We dont have fireworks round here and the county website says there are displays but not where.

Was thinking of going to see one this year but rapidy going off the idea  cos I reckon they are all too small and just kids stuff, I love really bigdisplays, preferably over the Thames  :'( :'(

Xanthe is alert but doesn't seem scared - she is being a bit weird but has been all day. Mind you as she woke me up horribly early maybe it is me who is feeling a bit weird.

We've got a lot more going off here tonight than we have over the past few nights. Boopy isn't too bothered (just waking up when they are going off outside). She got very upset when some were going off quite close by a few weeks ago when she was outside though. Bilbo is currently sitting on top of his cat house in the run watching them as he loves them.

Edit:
P.S: Before I get told off for Bilbo being outside I did bring him in earlier but he was squealing at the back door for ages to go back out so I let him back out again. He's being checked on regularly and he's got his radio on in his house.

We don't celebrate bonfire night over here. There were loads of fireworks round Halloween though, my cats didn't even seem to notice them going off which I'm so thankful for cos my dog was terrified of them.

L n R are not letting it disturb their sleep pattern  :evillaugh:  Quite pleased actually as they don't like the doorbell going so was worried they might be a bit freaked out by the bangs and whizzes but they have taken it well and truly in their stride  :)

Lexy's fine. She becomes more alert with the whooshing kind, but she's ok. Alexandra Palace is just up the road and their display is a bit difficult to see from my windows but the noise even from a mile away is phenomenal. Lexy gets more wary of cars and the doorbell than the fireworks. So all good so far.

Billy Whiz just heard his first whizzing one and not at all impressed. Unfortunately he came in to keep his Ma company in front room and can't close curtains in here.

Instead of hugging (couldn't if I tried of course  ;) ) just got out Da Bird as distraction and he seems OK and up the stairs now waiting for next Da Bird session.

Fireworks started an hour or so ago and so far everyone has been fine.

I did close off our sunroom (like a conservatory but with walls) so they can't go in there where the noise would be much louder.

Harley showed a few signs of being scared but has settled on the new cat tree I bough for Lirael (who's sat in front of the fire).

All absolutely fine here :)

Meesha and Sabby have been sleeping, and Shanti has been watching the fireworks out of the window, bless her.

I didn't let them out at all yesterday or today, just in case they didn't come in before dark.  Think they're gonna be glad it's over so they can go out again (cept on the actual 5th).  I've taken some of their old toys out of retirement to keep them entertained, although they mostly prefer the box my new microwave came in!  :evillaugh:

I was terrified earlier this evening. Bramble didn't want to come in, and she was still out when the fireworks started! Then of course she was too frightened to move. I'm glad to say she eventually came in, and is now sleeping as if nothing happened! I'll be getting them in earlier from now on, just to make sure.

Bengals have not been bothered in the slightest.  Boys are sleeping but are a little annoyed when a particularly loud one means they have to actually lift their heads to work out whats going on   The girls have been lined up on the window sill in the main room watching the display  :evillaugh:

Kaiser and Minerva a little more alert than normal but doing just fine  :Luv:

All pretty chilled. Kylie was in the garden quite happily watching them until there was a really loud bang and she ran in. Other than that, no problems. We went out and they were fine. We have blackout blinds in the lower ground floor so no flashes. Left the TV on Classic FM. Willow loves watching them from the kitchen so no problems  :Luv:

My youngest was NOT happy last night. she's nervy anyway, but someone whose garden backs onto ours was letting off loads of fireworks and knowing what a scaredy cat she is I came into the front room to check on her....poor girl was cowering under the computer chair. I picked her up and carried her through to the room I was in where she sat on my knee for the duration of the fireworks. The other three didn't even seem to notice!

It's only lunch time and they have started already. I dread the true bonfire night if last night was anything to go by. Have you seen the stick that come down off the rockets .One landed about a foot from out car it was about 3' long and about the circumference of one of my fingers. and had a nail in it.  Had it landed on the car I don't want to think what damage it would have caused.

Ollie & Portia were absolutely fine with last nights fireworks - slept through the lot, but our poor greyhound was panting and wouldn't settle.  Luckily there were none too near us.

Foxy spent the entire evening snuggled up under the radiator o her pillow.  Rossi was asleep on my knee and Zephyr was in a mood cuz I wouldn't let him go out and play .... when he finally realised that no matter how naughty he was I wasn't going to open the door he stationed himself on the windowsill and is happily watching the display.  :Luv2:

Fortunately we are in a little hamlet where people aren't letting fireworks off randomely so it's mostly fine - but there was a display up the local pub on Friday night which really freaked the cats out.  They had a massive fight in the middle of friday night which I'm sure must have been caused by the stress of that.  We got up in the morning to a pile of fur and two collars on the floor, so I guess it proves that the kittycollars work if nothing else!  They are both nice and settled at the moment, nothing else going on round here!

Yep, thats right - for ONE night only!!! - they are going off again here now. It was awful last night, but only George was a bit concerned about them and hid under the duvet! - which is progress for him, coz usually he's crawling around practically on his tummy really distressed - valerian drops are working   ;)

None of the others are bothered - kitten Gwyn hasnt batted an eyelied!!

there seem to be more of thos whining ones out tonight - maybe they're the garden ones. There was  more booming, cracking and at one point quite a tuneful whistling last night.

these whining ones are the ones my cats dislike.

Doing fine here - Ellie sat on the arm of the chair watching them last night !    Daisy has been behind the sofa a bit but not really too worried and the other three sleeping through it all.    It is so strange as Bubbles hates the noise of the washing machine and tumble dryer and gets really stressed, the three youngsters hate it if I cough or sneeze but fireworks no problem !

Been loads here the last two nights and Bertie has done very well considering in previous years he's been totally spooked and trembling in the bottom of the wardrobe.  Well, he was doing okay until one landed very close to the house with a huge bang and it made me jump - that spooked him!

The night before last wasn't too bad but last night was horrendous, huge explosions that went on for ages originating from across the road. Alfie and Suzie ended up under the bed but Frankie was okay. I turned up the tele in the living room and switched on the one in the bedroom but they were so loud that there was no way that I could drown them out, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  >:(

I've finally caught the horrid cold my husband has had for two weeks, so I took the day off sick and we normally go to a games thing every monday but I got out of it tonight.

So I'll play some loud music to annoy the folks next door and that should also help with the fireworks.

Course, I may watch batman begins as the hubby isn't home and I can drool.

Still, so far so good with the 5 cats.

My lot aren't too worried, except Pimpernel, who can't make up his mind whether to watch the fireworks, or hide. I wish it would end soon.

Loads going off here tonight (all horrible loud ones too) and it was noisy when the big display at the beach was going on. My lot are being a bit useless! Are they busy worrying about me, cuddling me and spraying a human version of Feliway around to calm me down because I get really jumpy with the bangs? Are they hell! Bilbo's too busy watching the fireworks and Boopy's fast asleep so just sitting on my own with a duvet wrapped around me going 'eek' when I hear the loud bangs  :evillaugh:

We have been quite lucky out here in the country as Rain has put a damp squib on tonights major display and the only bad reaction from our mob has been jazz the JRT who is currently in her hidey hole behind the couch and the domestics are under our duvet and the ferals and Sky can't see any problem that a squeaky toy can't help!

I hate fireworks make them stop!

My ginger boys (Bobby the cat and Charlie the dog) aren't in the slightest bit bothered, but the girls aren't happy. Buffy the black cat is hiding in her new place behind the chair, and Reba my black dog is just barking her head off and running round whinging wiht her hackles up (despite very loud tv and 40 quids worth of DAP plugged in and round her neck on a collar)

Next year I am going to try and find a holiday in the middle of nowhere in a firework free zone. Bah humbug.

Have a little stray I have been feeding my garden, opened the door tonight and he flew in terrified. Didn't have the heart to put him out again so he is in my daughters bedroom with a big bowl of chicken!! We only took in another stray in August but am trying to convince my hubby another wouldn't hurt!!!

My cats are all in and just chillin'  ;D

I am very proud of em all cos I just come back from a display in carmarthen............12 miles away........and when i got home they were all just waiting for me in the house.................oh they so good and I love em  :Luv2: :Luv2:

Everything happens early here  cos out in country but this year we have had fireworks on all three days , whereas last two years have been nothing. So area is changing.

When I lived in London the fireworks would still be going at midnight and they would start before it got dark.

I know you aren't supposed to reinforce scaredy behaviour but,

If you find the right time Dave, please give the stunning Pimpernel a loving hug from me

Lo and behold I heard some fireworks HERE in Rome too!!  (Couldn't see it as there are too many obstacles around our building... :( )  It's really out of the season and I guess there are some folks from Briatin celebrating!! :wow:
Oliver wasn't bothered at all, he became quite a noise proof puss by now.  This is a busy part of the town and we hear constantly all sorts of noise, traffic, trains etc. even through the sound proof window. Then there is our oversized fridge in the kitchen that makes some weird noise off and on... he was a bit freaked when he came here from his former home in the country side, but quickly adjusted himself.  He even sleeps through in front of me while I am doing my work out with music at full blast!!

The boys were absolutely fine again tonight, there were a few really loud ones but what actually woke them up was me going 'It's OK baby, Mummy's here'  :evillaugh:  They stretched their littles toes out contentedly and closed their eyes again  :)

I've been really impressed by them as Lukey can be a bit of a scaredy cat with new noises but he's been so brave, Riley is as nosey as ever and was either unconscious or sat on the windowsill chasing the 'whooshes' with his eyes  :)

They were closer here tonight than before, poor Bella spent part of the time on top of the bookcase, but they didnt go on for too long last night. Tiger was barely seen last night, she has been hiding under the bedding that is drying.

We hardly had any fireworks around our way last night, which was excellent  ;D

Didn't end up going out in the end anyway is it was raining, which might have had something to do with the lack of fireworks  :evillaugh:

We have had organised fireworks on Friday and Saturday and Sunday night and I managed to get my lot inside before they started.  They were all hiding somewhere in the house and only came out when everything had stopped.

Last night was a different matter.  I managed to get Pepper and Buddie in just after 5pm but not Samson.  At about 10 to 6, fireworks started to be let off left right and center, and Sam went to hide under the shed.  It took me till after 9pm to finally coax him out and carry him into the house.  The poor lad was trembling and I was so cross.  Given that poeple had lots of public displays since Friday, why did they all have to have their private ones last night.  I'm still very much cheesed off but will know for next year and make sure I'll lock them up inside by 5pm latest.

Not sure if I'm more angry with myself or with all these inconsiderate folk around me.   :mad2:

In my case, it's the people around me. And not just because of fireworks - they all seem to be noisy round here. Screaming kids, excessive use of car horns, idiotic college students.....you get the idea. >:( I was pretty perturbed that we got TWO rocket sticks hitting our kitchen window, though. If it had got damaged I'm not sure whether we'd have had to replace it! (Rented property.)

yes it has restarted here too. But my lot don't seem too concerned. Even really loud ones just get one eye open and tucked in the head once more... I think I jump further than the cats and dog when they are close and loud.

I think it's the Hindu festival of lights, which lasts for a week and ends tonight/tomorrow - apparently there's a lot of sweet giving/eating  ;D

The big Hindu temple in Neasden is gonna have a massive firework display that will light up most of North London - normally I'd think  ;D but now we have the cats and Jessie's stress weeing to deal with I feel more  >:(

I can hear loads of fireworks going off in the distance now...

Divali is in full swing our way - it sounds like bombs going off. Luckily Xanthe is pretty calm about it all, so not too fussed for her. It is a hard one, I feel for the animals but it is a major celebration for so many people round here.

Same for us. A pile of fireworks tonight, but not as much as Monday.  My area is mostly Turkish and Greek and don't celebrate Dawali, so thankfully the night is a bit quieter - though all from one house it sounds like and doesn't stop. A lot of bangers.

Had to take Sam to emergency vet last night. She was in distress, meowing and sitting in her litter tray doing nothing. Thought she might be constipated/cystitis. She weed on my lap too!

Went to emergency vet service near a cat loving friend (didn't want to see Vets Now, which my vet uses). He gave her a thorough exam, including testing the urine sample she conveniently gave him.

He concluded that nothing wrong except he thought she was showing signs of stress. I told him there was no change in environment, then Rebekah, my friend mentioned fireworks!!!! Bingo!!!!

Keeping her quiet and if fireworks start tonight will mask them with some Mozart. Cats like classical music!

Cost nearly £90. He gave her a long-acting penicillin injection 'just in case' she was developing cystitis, cos her urine was strong but no blood or sign of infection.

Bloody fireworks!!! :mad2:

They've just started again. I didn't notice at first but Sam is on my lap and tensed - then I noticed the bangs and have turned up the mozart! I don't know why it's going on for so long. Maybe it's the students.

Will take her to vet tomorrow, see if she needs some kind of traquilliser!!!

Anyone any tips please?

Feliway could help, and bachs rescue remedy.

Cats aren't good patients for sedating.

Will buy some feliway tomorrow, have an old one plugged in. My cats didn't respond when I've tried it before (when vet thought cystitis might be stress related). The emergency vet didn't stock it - it's recommended so often on Purrs that it came to mind.

I hope this doesn't go on much longer. Unfortunately, the students have parties around Xmas, and let off fireworks then. Then there's the New  :censored: Year.

Oh ban the lot of them.

I should chill, I'm in a really foul mood.

I thoroughly recommend classical music for stressed cats. Played this (mostly baroque) till about 11pm last night, and she's totally different today. She's calm and eating well.

At around 5pm tonight, I'll give them another dose of this. The Mozart Effect works wonderfully for Sam.
