Title: Kitten Emergency!!!
Post by: ronandcats on October 25, 2007, 23:36:37 PM
Ron rescued this kitten today and it was claimed that the mum had rejected it. We're not sure if that's true (we suspect that a small child brought it home) but the situation is that we are now trying to care for it. If anyone in the Brighton area has a mum cat with very small kittens we would like to try see if she might surrogate feed this little mite. As you can see it is tiny and still has its umbilical attached so can't be more than a week old. If you have a cat that might be able to help PLEASE call us on 01273 422721. We understand that cats do sometimes surrogate feed lost kittens and although we will do everything in our power to try and ensure its survival it would probably have a better chance being adopted by a mum with kittens. So please do call us if you think you could help, it would be much appreciated. Ron & Dave

ps. If anyone could offer any advice that might help us to keep this little guy alive please don't hesitate to email us as we would love to do right by this poor little kitten.

I am so sorry you have lost the little one. Sometimes all we can do is make sure the passing to Rainbow Bridges is in a warm and loving environment.  Sometimes with all the knowledge in the world the little ones cannot be saved. I will email you Cats Protections advice as to hand rearing kittens although I expect you know it already.

As you may know a mum cat will often reject a kitten if she knows something is wrong with it, so you may have been told the truth. As we in rescue are told so many lies I fully understand why doubts creep in.

I would also say that if you take on any more apart from the members who you have been advised to contact for advice Ela (and I am sure Leslie) has a good idea too as for 18 yrs there are not many times when she or one of her fosterers are not handrearing kittens. In fact we have one who came in a couple of days ago nearly dead but now it is coming on in leaps and bounds. Of course we know that this can change at any time.  The only problem was the mum had no milk, the owner had been taken to prison and someone was going in twice a day to feed mum but did not know she had no milk, 3 kittens had already died.

Sorry about the poor kitten Ron, we know you tried  such a gorgeous little thing too

I don't have any experience of kittens but I saw some kitten survival kits on a site last week.  I guess rescues are familiar with the kits?

Edit, I found them - Its collostrum + vitamins "for ailing newborn kittens"
