I know we've had this thread before, but I'm in touch with a lady who feels she has to give up her cat due to an allergy. (And he is stunning!) She's been on antihistamines for four years, but they aren't combatting the allergy anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might help?

I've heard Petal Cleanse is good as it stops the dander which causes the allergies in the first place?
I don't know much more than that, but I'm sure others will have more knowledge of this product.

I've used petal cleanse and it seemed to help. It also made Hector's fur lovely and soft and shiny.
I also use a 'hayfever relief spray' which helps stop the sneezing. They can be bought over the counter at chemists.
I am not sure if it is Hector that is causing my symptoms but even if it was I couldn't even think of giving him away.

To be fair, I can't imagine giving a ten year old cat away either. (One of mine is that age) But she has persevered for four years and I think she feels it's her last resort. :(

Sorry, I wasn't meaning to be rude about your friend. I just meant that I personally couldn't imagine having to give Hector away. I'd be so sad.
I know how horrible allergies can be if you can't get them under control so I hope Petal Cleanse helps.

If she's taking the same anti histamine for 4 years suggest that she changes brand (to one containing a different active chemical) as they do stop working after a time. I take anti histamines all year round but alternate them. Clarityn, zirtek and benadryl (or the cheaper own brand versions of the same drugs) all contain different active ingredients so it's worth changing them from time to time.
It would also be worth paying attention to the home, if she's not already. she may well be allergic to her cat, but if she's getting those symptoms when she's at home it's very likely that house dust mites are to blame as well (or instead of the cat) as that is the most common allergy. So damp dusting a lot, washing laundry regularly(or spraying with something that kills dust mites) might help.

I believe it is possible. One of my friends was also allergic to cats but lived with two indoor cats anyway. She used a medication, an inhaler type that is similar to the ones asthmatic people use, and she seldom had problems. Pity we lost contacts since and there is no way to ask her about the detail of the medication, but if she consults with an allergy specialist, I am sure they will find something for her. Yes I can vouch for petalcleanse too - it really helps my cat allergies - YES, I'm allergic to cats and I live with 12 of 'em!! - and your'e right Lolly, it does make the coats nice doesnt it?

She could also try her doctor for something abit stronger.
A good hoover would help. If its dust mites then Indorex flea spray kills them ;D
