christmas is not far off, so I was wondering if other people n here have had the same experiance ??
1991 my first xmas in my own house, I decided to spend £180 on xmas decoration's, lights, 8ft xmas tree
tinsle, balls etc.etc. spent a whole evening moving furnature, putting decoration's and tree up, slight
intervention's from the furbabe's Hamish n Misty, (cause it was something new) but nothing too concerning.
Got up in the morning to go to my work, everything fine, tree ok, living room tidy ;D
went to work, came home at dinner time, one ball on the ground in the middle of the floor :-:
How did that get there?? it must have fell off as the furbabes were sleeping ?? I put it back on tree.
went back to work, came home at six, put the light on and saw the remains of my tree >:(
lying flat out in the middle of the floor in a state of disarray with tinsle and balls strewn everywhere !!
Spent another evening putting said tree back to it former glory and splendor ;D
Watched Hamish and Misty very closely the whole evening, a couple of attempts to ge close to tree, and they
were quickly warned off.
same happend the next day, ok in the morning wrecked by night >:( >:( spent yet another evening sorting
the (bloody xmas tree, as it was being refered to by now) but this time not to be outdone by my babe's, I
tied a piece of string to a screw I put in the wall, thinking that will stop them knocking it over ;D ;D
Well, I came home that night and I couldnt believe my eye's... All branches had been bent back down leavng
a neat Pile of tinsle, Lights and balls lying in a circle at the bottom of the remains of the tree "which was still
standing !!! Obviously the little :censored: had been climbing the tree !!
Although it was funny to start with that was the final straw, lights were taped to the window, and some tinsle
hanging in high places, and that's the way its been for the last 16 years, the tree got the heave ho
but my question is does anyone else here bother with tree's and decorations ??
-
Well I reckon there will be alot of fun in trees from all the growing kittens here ;D
Mine are all adult , not that that makes a difference with some, but mine are all relatively good an apart from some lametta eating by the birmans no other damage
-
I dont think we are going to have a tree this year as the kittens will climb up anything than can so think it would be a waste of time
-
kittens will climb up anything than can so think it would be a waste of time
Yeah Tell me about it, One morning I was half asleep, and my eye's were still closed, when I became aware
of this weight on my chest and a stinging sensaition in my nose, I finally came to, and opened one eye..
I had a Big Blue eye staring right back at me, the same when I opened my other eye..
Misty was only little and couldn't jump so He had climbed onto the bed, sat on my chest, and for some reason
grabbed hold of my nose with his teeth ( He wasn't biting, just holding ) Oh how I laughed, asking him
what on earth are you doing
on another morning I got out of bed to go to work, I was in the middle of having a stretch
when all of a sudden I felt this excruciating sharp pain going up my leg, my waist, stomach then my chest,
I couldn't move !!
till eventually Misty had almost reached my shoulder when I decided to grab him!!!
It wouldn't have been so Bad, But I only had my Boxer short's on at the time, Still bring's a tear to my eye
to this day :'(
Like you say , "they'll Climb anything !!! "
Here's some of the only pic's I have of misty when he was ickle
-
Thats a dirty word & its banned.....forever
-
ouch Stuart that makes my eyes water :oh noo:
My last christmas tree was only last year. I set it up with pride but Ralfie decided it was the ideal target for his spraying. The Shadow decided to get in on the act, and the evidence of a large dog lifting his leg on the tree (and the carpet >:() was all a bit too much for me, so trees are banned in this house (at least till I can get a new one that is untainted) and frankly, I doubt any sort of tree would survive Smidgen's attentions.
-
Awww I loooooooove Christmas (I know I know ;) )
We will have a tree - we had one last year and it was fine (the year before that though Cheese was a kitten and the tree spent more time on the floor than it did upright, fairy lost her head too  ) the cats last year more liked sitting on the presents underneath and giving them a good sniff rather than anything else (and they were warned off when they started patting at decorations!)
We have the whirlwind that is Doc this year though, so might be a bit more tricky, but we will still have one! I got all excited talking about it last night and Phil was all bah humbug and told me off :(
-
I have a little 3' tree, but I know full well that every day I'll be hunting around the lounge for all the baubles that Max has knocked off and batted round the floor :evillaugh:
For anyone having their first tree with cats, make sure that you only get plastic baubles, as the 'proper' ones break soooo easily and could cause injury to small paws
-
Phil was all bah humbug and told me off
Bah Humbug! All I have to say
-
Last years tree looked lovely until Sidney found the string of beads which were wound round - you can guess the result ;D I don't know what Olliver and Portia will make of it this year - probably think its some new sort of torture for little black cats.
-
My christmas tree is BLACK! with red and silver decorations. The girls pretty much ignored it (was only a few feet tall) and just batted a few baubles every now and again.
Yeah!!! GOTH TREEEEEEEEE!!!! ha ha (oh dear think i have had too much sugar this morning......)
-
Although not sure "goth" and "festive" go together.... ;) :evillaugh:
Ruuuuth... :slap: Christmas is great... think of all those excuses to eat chocolate and drink wine! ;)
-
Ruuuuth... :slap: Christmas is great... think of all those excuses to eat healthyfood and drink wine! ;)
:slap: Bah Humbug
-
:evillaugh:
HRH Lexy not getting a stocking this year then? ;)
-
Just the silly looking santa hat she hates :evillaugh:
And maybe a new toy. But she gets them alllll the time, so technically....TECHNICALLY.... its xmas every week in our house :evillaugh:
-
I have been impressed for the past 2 years that the Xmas tree has survived Bilbo (he prefers to hide under it and ambush you) but we're not going to bother putting it up this year.
-
I got all excited talking about it last night .....
I do that. Start talking about it really early. We watched The Hogfather recently (I was bought it on DVD for Christmas!) and I started getting really hyper about the impending festivities...even though it's three months away!
With regards to trees, I've always had one. Mine's made from recycled paper(!) (It's green, obviously!) and my mum and dad bought it me the year I left home....which is now 14 years ago!
-
So far it seems to be 50/50 :wow: yes it was a lot of fun watching them, Like Cheese, Hamish and Misty would
hide under the tree (like comandos) amongst the prezzies, and run out to attack !! then just run back under it
But I was working 12hr shifts at the time, and the last thing I wanted to do EVERY night was to put up a christmas tree :tired:
A Goth Tree ??? Cool !!!
-
I was just wondering about that question as well... Hobbes, my former "master" was exceptionally laid back -- well, lazy rather -- sort and my Christmas tree used to remain pretty much intact, one or two ball or icicle on the floor now and then, and that was the extent of the damage. However Oliver is much more chipper and hyper than Hobbes, nothing that are dangling, colourful and interesting escape his attention. :wow: I am afraid he is gonna have a real go at the tree. However I am home most of the time and can keep my eyes on him, so probably we will put it out and see how it goes, it may turn out to be a huge battle of will :scared: but, a Christmas without a tree is too sad, we could only try!! :innocent:
-
Ruth, are you sure thats not every day? You know, there is a song about that... shall I sing it for you? :evillaugh:
Stuart, I have a really cute photo of Cheese I will have to dig out - she is in the middle of a "stake out" under the tree so you can just see lots of presents and some black ears and yellowy green eyes peeping out
-
:P :P :P :P BH!
-
:evillaugh: sorry couldn't resist!
-
Well my Chrimbo tree always looked beautiful on day 1- it was dressed the same all the way round, no 2 baubles the same near each other. - by day 2 it was looking a bit cheesed off, day 3 so on & so on.
Now I don't bother dresing the back of it, and just put the baubles anywhere. When you have a 16lb Male Bengal sitting in it, closely followed by a 12lb male bengal, it's not worth the effort.
Though I do take a before - and after photo, just so I can see it did look nice at the start. :)
-
After trying my tree out for a few Christmas periods....I give up :sigh: there's no chance in my house :(
-
We have 3 fibre optics of varying sizes and when we moved last year Robin gave the cats their own one in the family room and they had 4 weeks of fun helping daddy undress it and re dress it and the hunt the ornaments!
They love them all and we really enjoy chriostmas with them and the dogs - just hope Sky doesn't think they are indoor trees this year! :innocent:
-
I always put one up and Bronte and Dino are fine - Harry (been missing for one year now) climbed it once the first year and with his brother Dino they used to play football with the odd bauble that they would tease off between the pair of them but ever since they never look at it (and I usually put 2 up). However, at 18 months Heidi and Huxley are very kitten like and I strongly suspect we are going to have some fun with them this year!
-
well jasper ignored ours last year so.... we shall see!!!
i did buy him a sacrificial one also though, a little cone thing covered in red feathers which he seemed to like rolling around with for a bit.
but like i said - we shall see!!!!!
^suzie^ used to love 2 little decorations which had feathery puffy bits on. we still have them though they do look like they've suffered abuse, but cant bare to get rid of them since she enjoyed them so much :Luv:
-
Was only talking about this yesterday, have decided there's absolutely no point in me putting a tree up this year as
the boys Riley would be attempting to climb it / steal whatever was hanging from it within minutes :evillaugh:
Last Christmas was Tiggy's last Christmas, she LOVED her tree and spent most of her time asleep under or around it. Here she is when I came to take it down, she refused to move! That's when I built her little tent area as she seemed gutted that she had nothing to lie under anymore :)
i did buy him a sacrificial one also though, a little cone thing covered in red feathers which he seemed to like rolling around with for a bit.
Brilliant  A sacrificial tree :evillaugh:

Here's some of the only pic's I have of misty when he was ickle
Aww hes was gorgeous and still is :Luv:
I really aint goin tp put a tree up after the way they av been acting today   i have a coat hanger thing on the back of the door and one of them climbed all the way up and and then she climbed up the curtain >:(
-
a couple of years ago we bought a really expensive artificial tree that looks absolutely brilliant - just like a real one. Last year (the gingers 1st chrimbo) we were away so didn't bother with decs at home, this year we're at home ;D so shall put it up.
Methinks Cosmo will probably attempt to shag, kill or eat it - possibly all three - and Jessie will run away and hide under our bed :evillaugh:
-
Liking the goth tree idea. We have real trees as I love the smell - Binky was always pretty good around them. This year with Xanthe who knows :scared:
-
Having a ponder - the year that Dino and Harry bothered with the tree it was an artificial one. Ever since the main one that I put up is real and they have never looked at it. Do you think is it possible that they don't like the strong pine smell from real ones?
-
I was terrified of putting one up last year with Mosi around, but he pretty much ignored it. He had a new ceiling high cat tree next to it though, so I think that might have worked as a distractioni ;D Jaffa chews the branches which annoys me >:(
-
Some photos pilfered from the net
why are their tree's still standing
-
Up until about 3yrs ago i never had a problem but the "group" i have now will distroy a tree in about 3secs flat !!
I collect the Harrods christmas ball each year and since i now dont put a tree up they are just gathering dust in a cupboard
-
Some photos pilfered from the net

I particularly like the top and bottom ones on the right side... on the top one they look like pretty ornaments themselves, and the bottom, that evil satisfaction on his face after the damage has been accomplished... :evillaugh:
-
Growing up it was a case of the trimings going up dec 23 or 24 and coming down as soon as the last of any realtives had made thier xmas visit humbug ! Put a few trimings up myself just tinsle and tiny flashing fiber optic tree well not much room for any thing else .
Just further up from me every year a row of houses put up thier out side lights i love it myself thiers a house on the way to cardiff from me thier famous just about for thiers as its on the main route in out of cardiff to the valleys would hate to have thier electric bill though Ouch !!
I know some people hate/dont like big lighted displays whats your thoughts ?
-
Heres Abby in our tree 3 years ago we had one the following year but put boards around it to deny the cats climbing access not had one since don't know yet if it's going up this year as Zak is a little naughty man lol
-
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ;D

The christmas tree site has been running for about 3 maybe 4 years and I first saw it 3 yrs ago and just fell about laughing.

Inlaw's tree with a Lirael under.
Even with a Burmese who climbs anything, chews on everything and is known for destroying things we still put a tree up in the living room every year. There is limited access though, which is probably why its never been knocked down.
I'm thinking of a new tree this year but it seems to be hard to find a 3ft tree that isn't already decorated or has weird fibre optic things on it.
Next has a 5ft black one that I'm thinking of getting, mostly due to the tree we have has been with my husband since uni and it's a bit worse for wear and leans to the left a lot.
-
... due to the tree we have has been with my husband since uni and it's a bit worse for wear and leans to the left a lot.
like all good university students!!!

I had to promise this morning that I would not throw it away even if it was replaced :evillaugh:
-
just forget to pack it next time you move house :evillaugh: The loft is a useful storage area :evillaugh:
-
I have never bothered with a tree, I dont like them, and use the cats as an excuse every year, despite the fact I rarely have cats that would bother (although last Christmas I did, I had to move the artificial flowers out of Shadows way!!). My neighbours bought a small ready decorated tree for me, so i had no excuse not to have anything up, but that and a few candles is my limit, I dont really like Christmas!!
-
.... I dont really like Christmas!!
:-: Wash your mouth out! ;)
-
I had a christmas tree experience when i thought I'd be clever and replant my tree for the next year. We dug it up again fine, brought it in and as the central heating worked its magic all the bugs that were hibernating / living on it came alive! Our living room was like the Amazon!  So a cat up it is nothing really!
-
I will be putting a tree up this year, both cats have never bothered with the trees, so I'm lucky there! Christmas Morning and all the wrapping paper can be a bit of a noisy occasion as they both roll about in it though  Reminds me of when i was younger and we had a cat called Ginger, who one Christmas decided to climb the Tree early Christmas Morning and brought it down through the room devider, smashing ornaments everywhere, whilst we were cleaning up, he sneaked in the kitchen and attacked the Christmas turkey!! :evillaugh:
Cat's ...Got to Love Em!
-
I hate Christmas, wish it had never been invented but prob will struggle putting up the tree, not sure why though!
-
I hate Christmas, wish it had never been invented but prob will struggle putting up the tree, not sure why though!
Aww, Gill why do you?
-
habit, cos others do...................I dont know, eevn bought a nice new one last year.
It is really a waste of time and effort though.
I suppose it also make me think of Kocka.
-
Been thinking about this myself recently. Previous cats haven't bothered with it and Dylan is far too lazy to make any effort to climb it. However this year with his Hobbesness in the house I have a feeling any tree might not last very long  he is a particularly good climber and even though the tree goes on the dining table he regularly gets on there - ummm difficult one.
-
I suppose it also make me think of Kocka.
I meant why do you hate Christmas...but this sentence clears it up. Did you lose her around that time of year?
-
No I didnt but somehow it does make me think of her, probably cos she loved turkey and my four will not touch it. So we used to have a big turkey so Kocka could have portions for a long time after Christmas. She specially loved the turkey jelly.
Also we went away together for what was her last Christmas and we spent it on a farm at the edge of Dartmoor and had a white Christmas.
So I guess Christmas and Kocka roll into one package for me and she didnt have one here.................
-
Awww, Gill. But at least your last Christmas with her was a beautiful traditional time. This will be our first Christmas since we lost Parsley - our phantom tinsel eater! We have that strand tinsel and she used to eat it until we got wise to her and started just putting it at the top of the tree. (I know it's bad for them, by the way which is why the tinsel was moved! None of the others are interested in it at all!)
-
the first one is the worst :(
-
It was Rosie's first Christmas last year and she wasn't too bad. The tree was fine in the morning, but baubles were everywhere by the time we got home. But at least the tree was still standing. :)
Mind you, she may show more interest this year :-:
I won't have tinsel this year as they are all scraggly after Madam got her claws into it last year.
-
I love christmas trees just to watch cats go crazy for them! This was Riley's first christmas.....
He's about twice as big now, and of course we recently go 5 month old Skye - I don't think this year's tree will stand much of a chance!
-
Wow my cats seem so well behaved looking at some of the pics of here :evillaugh: I'll be happy next year when we'll either have moved house or extended here so we'll have room for an Xmas tree again! :birth 2: I like having a tree up.
-
It's not christmas without a tree so put one up and let the cats have some fun, it's their christmas too.
Every year my tree ends up looking like a two year old has done it because of the cats so I might aswell let my son decorate it this year lol.
-
after watching smidgen systematically destroy my 3 dozen carnations in about 2 hours, I think I will resign myself to no tree this year. I will buy myself some flowers next November and see how it goes ................ :(
-
Hi, every year Ive always put a Xmas tree up and even used to roll the baubles across the room in an attempt to get the old boys to play, never worked though
This year have got two new furballs, they have only been with us three months and already the rubber plant has had to be moved to my moms because they insisted on constantly attack
ing it  so now I'm thinking putting up a Xmas tree is not such a good idea :evillaugh:
By the way my husband used to have a greyhound when he was growing up who used to nibble the bottom of the foil paper on the tree chocolates, just enough so no one would notice
but enough so he could eat them!!
-
tree healthyfood, by the way that should say tree chocolate's
-
ok i get it of course its healthy food :) lovin the photo of Riley by the way
-
 Hey Ginge the word etalocohC is Banned on this forum
-
We always figure that the tree is really for the cats - its part of their christmas presents, something to climb and trash :evillaugh: I think Riley loved it because he's an indoor cat (and Skye too, now), so it was a bit of the outdoors he could get all excited about (without having any of the drawbacks, like weather and other animals!)....we have learned a few lessons, tho - no tinsel this year!
-
Did I ever mention that last year's tree had to be dismantled before the day. First Ralph (my visitor cat who stayed 2 years) sprayed every branch he could reach. Then one morning i staggered into the loungeroom barely awake to witness the dog cocking his leg on the tree .............. There are limits .............
-

What about a fibre optic tree for people with curious cats? All the decorations you need are plastic covers to go over the end of some of the "branches."
-
This will be my first Christmas with the cats. I know 100% for a fact I'll have no hope of them not touching it. Haven't a clue what I'm gonna do cos I can't not have one with the kids :-:
-
Karenjet - it is an experience - believe me! It's just like having toddlers around again - 'No' and 'Don't touch' are phrases that are useless!
No delicate ornaments, only shatterproof baubles and definately no tinsel - infact any dangly is a no no!
-
This is the boys first Christmas so I shall try with the tree but don't know how long it will last :tired: :evillaugh:
Muppet and Rascal batted a few decs on it last year. Rascal hid under it but they were really good :)
Something tells me however the boys are going to be a nightmare :tired:
-
;D Poor fool that I am, I am actually looking forward to seeing Skye's reaction (and Riley's, too - though can predict based on last time), no matter how destructive! Would you believe I try to kid myself that they aren't the bosses of me? - though I'm not so delusional that I'm ever successful!
-
I'm a very happy girly! When Dave gets home at the end of next week we're going to sort out renting a storage unit to put loads of my boxes and furniture from my old flat in (2 sets of furniture never fits into 1 house lol) which means we'll have some room in the house and I can have my Christmas tree up!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
:xmas 3: :xmas 4: :xmas 6: (you may have noticed I'm slightly excited about this!)
-
Are you sure it's only slightly? I don't really know whether to put the tree up as we will be away for a few days but then we're back before New Year so I'm thinking is it worth it?
-
The tree is going up very very early here this year for several little reasons so it will be up by 4th December!
-
This will be my 3rd Christmas with no tree :'(
First year had a 3 month old border collie - so wasn't a good idea for a tree
2nd year above border collie was in her nightmare teenage phase - a tree wasn't even an option. Plus had a rather hormonal = naughty rabbit. Between the pair of them in would have been stressful to stop them.
This year the dog and rabbit would be perfectly fine, but I now have Memphis .. he's getting more daring every day and I can picture him up the top of the tree :scared:
Maybe next year ............
-
apparently the "in" thing this year is the "UPSIDE DOWN XMAS TREE" and they have been saying its very useful if you have little space AND cats coz they apparently dont bother with them so much of able to climb them so well ?
-
 Lynn i am supprised at you thinking they wont play with the upside down tree, (shudders at thought of snuzzels swing from the top bough!) We will however be putting up a tree but only with plastic ornaments
-
It doesnt normally bother me not having a tree BUT this year i have got the right hump about it !
I might try putting it up and see what happens
-
My Son was getting so excited about Christmas, that I gave in and put our tree up last Sunday.
This is what I came home to last night!!!!!
Where the tree is bare on the back - the tinsel and baubles were in the hallway, the star was in the kitchen.
-
We usually put a huge tree up but this year with the Bengal babies we have been out and bought 2 fibre optic trees, there isnt a lot of damage they can do to these - is there?
-
Oh that brought back the memories
-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thinks of last years ....... :censored:
james
-
Thanks James - not !!!
Maybe we should just decorate an outside tree and look at if from indoors !!
-
 Sheryl have you seen how long the fibres are on those xmas trees. Snuzzels had a game of catch the pretty stars and take them for a walk, :evillaugh: So once she had a strand firmly in her teeth she would back up  if the tree didnt fall over it could stick out by a good foot or two, then of course it was everyones turn to catch the wavy star, >:( :censored: >:( still dont worry it was only pulled over about 20 times before xmas and after pruning it didnt look toooo bad.
-
I'd hate to deprive Jaffa and Mosi of the chance to play with the tree so I will be putting one up. At the moment I have no idea where it will go though as I don't have a suitable space anywhere.
-
Oh well maybe we'll just call them disposable fibre optic trees - sshhh dont tell OH
-
Good news!!!!!!! they have left the tree alone ...well sort of , at least its not fallen over. Unfortunatly they found a new game. chase the santa off the shelf. Yep osirus likes to get up put her nose behind it and push it off.....then it is a game off now where the hell have thay dragged it off to this time.
-
You were so right !!! They dragged the Fibre Optic tree around the room between them growling like lions dragging prey away. OH was not amused but I couldnt stop laughing
he saw the funny side eventually.
No tree in our house this year :'( :'(
-
D day Tree day is tomorrow in my house :scared: I have one of those floating shelves up now next to the place where it's going to go - perfect for a run up for the boys :innocent:
-
Tree is so far unscathed - which is a miracle with a Doc in the house :evillaugh:
He patted a bauble and got told off and hasn't done anything since - very strangely well behaved for our little man :evillaugh:
-
We tried decorating top 2/3rds only of the tree and all unbreakable decs. So far so good, Xanthe has a swipe at the lower branches but hasn't really gone for it!
-
Ours is still all in one piece ........ nothing yet knocked off (but sure i'm tempting fate by saying this :evillaugh:)
-
Well the tree is still upright but both the boys have a fascination with chewing the fibre optic-y bits relentlessly. They're not normally chewers so it must be catnip impregnated or something :evillaugh:
Here's the boys 'assisting' with putting the tree up...
