Title: What colour is your cat/cats
Post by: Gill (sneakiefeline) on October 01, 2007, 23:31:56 PM
This is just a fun poll to see what are colour cats are mostly in our homes and to see if the blacks and black and whites fair worse than other colours.

I dont think they will on Purrs but lets see  ;D

Voted  :wow:  I don't like the word 'blue' for grey cats though, that's a pedigree term and when you look at the boys they are obviously grey not blue.

My mob are in - Mosi would have you know he's red and not ginger  :P  But he's down as ginger.  Magpie was black and white.

One each of black and blue here.

Blue is the correct term for a solid grey cat - and the fur should have a bluish / slate tinge to it. Madam Pearl is noticeably toned towards the blue. Blue is the dilute of black.

If the "grey" is lighter and warm in tone (tending towards the brown / pink) then it is known as Lilac and it is the dilute of chocolate - a colour not found in genuine mogs.

Auferstehen, looking at the pic of Lirael in your sig, I'd say a cream Burmese.

I ran out of ginger and whites!

I have:
1 ginger
1 black
1 black and white

And on the bridge:
2 black
2 tortie
1 black and white
1 tabby and white
1 ginger
4 ginger and white

No we need 36 plus 5 at the bridge - one of each colour there and what about grey and white - have 3 of those and torties come in 3 colour ways in our mob to!

Also outside we have white and black, tabby - white pawed tabby and one not sure keep seeing bits and its odd colours!

On that note I am just saying we have one or two more than most as do some of the others except they do rehome them ours are keepers!!

I've got:

2 x black
2 x black and white
1 x white
1 x tabby and white

we are almost matching - 2x black, 2x black and white, 1x white and 1x tabby. One of the blacks and the tabby have sadly gone to r bridge

Well ticking is really just a form of the tabby pattern, so technically they could be counted as tabbies.  Although I have put Mosi down as ginger and not tabby.. look what you've started, Gill

Well Mosi counts as ginger but he's not the same colour as your hooligans  ;D  I've put him down as 'ginger' but following the reasoning I gave you for Abys being tabbies, Mosi should be a red tabby and down as 'tabby'  ;D

Oh it's just too confusing!

Right I will try and add some more categories, I was at the beginning trying to keep it simple, which should really have been Black, black and white and the rest

Its confusing and I accept that, cos I didnt keep it simple but I knewwwwwwwwwwww someone would complain and I lost my Others that I cant remember category cos I changed it to colourpoint cos was drowning in Gillians persians early this morning.........sigh.

Right will do my best but it will just get more confuddling cos I cant change the order of the list, well ummmm without a lot of work, sooooooooooooo make it clear what you need from now on..........it ginger and white 5th vote or bengals 7th vote cos thinking cant remember how many bengals linda has............sigh

Whe the poll is finished I will add up the votes and see what we have but I reckon that the black and whites are very well owned by Purrs people  ;D

we didn't get a choice - our local rescue just gave us 2 of what they had available.  As OH said, doesn't really matter what colour they are, all kittens have a shelf-life and are harder to shift the older they get cos some people only want really little 'uns  :'(.

We just wanted 2  ;D

I am going to do my voting on weekend when i have time off work! I have only three cats now,but to do my babies at the bridge is going to take a while :( ? Ithink when you count the votes on the last day you findout many peeps on purrs do have b or b/w, but the problem comes from the people who dont have many cats and when they go to a rescue home thier first choice is mostly other colours, thats why is so many b or b/w are available? Tonight i checked on line the rescue i mentioned last week to see if any of the thirteen have been rehomed but sadly not and now there is fifteen and i think they put the ones which are more difficult to rehome on line ,i am not sure though? One thing i am sure at this rescue they find it difficult to rehome the FIV ones, tere are two blacks and one young tabby and they havebeen there for long time,if people are not interested in healthy young b or b/w whats the chances for the two blacks with FIV??  Well tomorrow is the world animal day, lets hope atleastfor one day people are kinder to little furrybabes :)
                  My cats at home:

BOY       BLACK                      PHOEBE       B/W                             MR TRAMP      B/W

Yes FIV even harder to home than black and black and white and I know when I went to look for a pair of new cats , I would have taken any colour except blue, cos kocka was blue..............so ended up with a b&W and a calico tortie  ;D

Sorry they will be no grey cos the official name for grey is blue and effectively there are no grey cats :shify: :shify:

Now from an artists point of view grey is just a shade of other colours and mosts greys are a version of blue.

Oooh a bit of controversy - I like it   Have done my votes and thankfully nothing controversial  :evillaugh: -  two tabbies, one tortie and one ginger and white. One tabby and tortie sadly at rainbow bridge but currently owned by one tabby and one ginger and white.  :Luv:

Mosi did get a bit stroppy when he found out I'd put him down as ginger.  He insists he's red and not ginger but I told him if he had a problem with his colour description, he could sort it out with Gill himself.  I'm not getting involved.

Yes I suppose Harry does look like that, but there are darker and lighter shades of grey. I would call the darker shades blue and the lighter gray. Eg Pearl is blue and Harry is gray lol.

There is nothing posh about Harry and he feels a bit of a girl if he were to accept this lol.

Harry says "not everything is black n white" we have a grey living here too.  :bum:

Well I am sorry that Harry is so snooty cos this thread is really about black, and B&Ws to see if Purrs people seem to follow a trend of not having these colour cats.

So Harry will have to come down to earth with a bump cos he is just one of the rest really :shify: :shify: :shify:

Purrs people it seems are very likely to have or had one of the lovely Black or B&W cats and it looks like we dont care about the colour, whats more important is its a cat that needs ahome  ;D

So Harry mate, you can figure in this poll or not and thats up to you

Yes it is but it got rather complicated cos I knew some peeps had a lot of cats but wish I had mane it Black, B&W and rest

I even typed in an explanation at the beginning but where it vanished to  :Dont know: :Dont know:

Voting started so quick so I was forced to improvise  :evillaugh: :evillaugh: but its great to see what colour cats we all have, bluesssssssssss tooooooooooooo  :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

Gil, i did put my bridge babes which i had since i came to England, but i've had kittys since i was six years old and in my country you find very few people which have cats or dogs indoor ,some who love animals feed them out in garden and...,so i was allowed to have one or two...cat as pet indoor and many more in our garden which i would lookafter during summer school holiday and then some would come back next year and stay so i am not sure really if i can call them my babes?? And they were mixture of all colours and ages ;),the ones i looked after inside if i remember right were:  2 B/W      3 GINGER       3 TORTIES       1 BLUE      1 WHITE+GREY SPOTS    2 TABBY    1 CREAM :Luv:

I included my lot since leaving home including Bridge babes. 3 black, 2 B&W, 2 tabbies, 1 white/tabby, 1 tortie(?)

If I went back to before I left home there would have been many more black and B&W. I simply don't understand their unpopularity in the world outside Purrs.

Wasn't sure what to put Dingle down as but plumped for tortie which isn't right I know. What do you think? We had a drawing done of her in 1992 when she was 15 and it is as good as a photo of her esp the colouring. She passed away on my birthday in 1997 just short of her 21st birthday so it will be 10 years next Saturday. I loved that wicked bundle  :Luv:

Dingle looks like a tortie to me but maybe a dilute tortie, thats when the colours are lighter and more pastel shades.

She looks lovely in her picture  ;D

"Blue cream tortie" so I was right putting tortie then. Complete fluke  ;D

She was small, very beautiful (different shades of grey and fawn) and a complete spitfire who ruled me without mercy. Mustn't get maudlin....

Yep!! I like what I call dilutes, the ones that are more like grey cats with bits of cream in them - or as my friend called the one she saw last year 'blue and pink'!!

I understood what you meant about cream colour but didnt think that there was a cream coloured cat except maybe when they are torties  ;D

I know my Ducha is very cream looking but he is a blue point.

You can get cream coloured cats (cream is just a dilute of red), but they are generally pedigrees. My neighbour has a cream and white cat, here is a pic

Hm... I can't find the box to tick for "Red Silver Tabby and White"...

At least Monkey is pure black (I've had black cats most of my life, but all the others always had a collection of a few white hairs under their chin or something - but not Monkey!). It's easier when you have to fill in forms at vets etc... Poppy's colour never fits!  Not to mention that there's never enough space for "Norwegian forest cat".
