I just want to know if you think black or black&white cats are not as popular AS OTHERS? I just checked one of the rescues on line which i have been supporting for last eight years and they have eighteen cats for rehoming, (on line) which thirteen are balck or black& white! i know some havebeen there for months now even they are young and healthy? And mean while the ginger and tabby and.... all get rehomed.I wonder is it this rescue centre which find it hard to rehome them or has anyone noticed its a problem finding home for them? AND WHY?
-
not exacty an answer to your question but venture farm (where i got kitty from) had loads of black + black and white cats,
I think they do find it harder too rehome them it seems as though people think there *common* i dont have any black and white cats myself but my gfs mum has 3 off them.
I think all cats are gorgeous and i would willingly give one a home
-
I think Pav that they are harder to rehome. I think in part its the old superstition about black cats being unlucky, but I have to say that I fall hard for B&Ws and Black cats.
-
Yes opinion is that they are harder to home but it maybe also that there are just so many more of them.
-
all the best cats are black   My Esther is gorgeous and so sweet with little (not so little these days) Smidgen. They have just finished dinner and given each other a bath and are now retiring to their mutual nest :Luv:
-
Most black and white cats are so lovely though there was a really lovely one at venture farm called nimbus i wanted to rescue him but someone had already booked him
-
And I love black and whites but my fav big Misaman is out hunting ;D
-
I have 2 tabbies and one tortie/calico/white lol not really sure what she is i havent got them because there colour but because there loving natures well kitty kind of picked me lol
-
It is supposed to be, the bulk of my fosters have been black and whites, maybe there are more of them born than other colours. I personally wouldn't have chosen to own some of the black and whites I have fostered, but there are some on here that are stunning and I would have!! I have a soft spot for pure blacks though (got 2 in the house at the moment, I am hoping the one available for rehoming doesnt' haev to wait too long).
-
My gfs mum has a black and white cat called charlie he is 14 yrs old and a absolute stunner :Luv:
-
I have a soft spot for black and whites (and white and blacks!) - Magpie in my avatar was b&w and I chose him for that reason.
-
I think you might be right ,its too many of them out there ! and it could be the superstition as well which doesnt help :(, i have to say the reason i adopted Phoebe from this rescue home was because her privious owner said she was agressive!(Took her ten years to find out???)and even in that time they had cats same age as her (10 YEARS OLD) which the home describe as the friendiest cat the home has ever seen and he has been there for months and still there, and the younger ones in black or b&w are still there,so basicly a cat which isolder and difficult to handle ,they ship to a different home or centre ??
-
I had Little Girl who was all black (she passed away last Feb) and Penguin who's black and white.
My father in law wants an all black cat so he can name it Salem.
-
I love black cats, and my first cats were black and white brothers (one soppy, one a bit neurotic) who loved long and happy lives and were both much loved. So if I were looking I would be more than happy to take one. However no idea if I am in majority / minority!
-
I am not sure majority or not,but if i see a little one which needs a home i dont care what colour? I understand if its age issue because sometimes people cant go through heart break of loosing them if they havebeen throuhg it recently and also vet bills, but if is healthy young cat???

We recently did a newpaper article about the kittens I'm rescuing from the farm in Chislet. We've had loads of calls, but most are asking about gingers. :shify:
This colony I'm dealing with is mostly black with a few black and whites. No tabbies at all. For every one ginger or calico, there's at least 6 black/b&w ones. There are tiny black kittens running around the hedges but even if I catch them, I know I can't find homes for them all. It's so depressing! :'(
-
I think its odd how people choose colour over character (the same can be said for breeds I suppose) . I saw an ad on that site (I don't look but was looking for rescues in Folkestone the other day) a woman was looking for a white female under 2 years old  - probably to match her sofa

I know and if you do find a home, its because they are young and sweet little kitties and then what happens ? Few years later they endup in a rescue home looking for a home? And then they end up staying there for months and months . :( :( :(

Its like at venture farm they have some lovely black and white cats which have been there years now some even since they were born feel sorry for them
-
I have 2 of them and they're great ;D Lily's lovely - my [affectionate] nickname for her is Lilymonster because at times, she can be :). Humphrey's very handsome and is far too clever for my own good ;)
I've heard they can be harder to rehome but personally, I'd have no real colour preference - it's personality that counts :Luv:
-
how cute :Luv:
I dont have any of my own but the 3 ive got ive rescued because there natures not there colours

Why not a Black One?
"Oh, see that pretty one fluffy and sweet,
Little white legs and four tiny grey feet"
Please look at the dark shape alone at the back,
I'm cuddly, I'm pretty, but I'm also BLACK.
"Come see the tabbies with markings so fine,
Look at that ginger one, Oh let it me mine"
We are the dark shapes - there at the back,
We're cute and adorable but, sadly, we're BLACK
If you want a pet that will love you to bits,
Come, take a look a these little BLACK kits.
Our eyes will shine just as bright as those others,
Just give us a cuddle - me, and my brothers!
Look into my eyes, what do you see?
A beautiful kitten, so playful - that's me.
You've seen all the pretty ones - now choose from the back,
Say "Look at that treasure, it's mine - and it's BLACK"

My father in law wants an all black cat so he can name it Salem.
I knew someone who had a black cat called that!
Old Mog (sorry, nickname!) is black and white and I think she's beautiful. And Big Man (another nickname) is pure black - although he's starting to get distinguished flecks now :Luv: - and I think he's extremely handsome.
-
No stuart but the :censored: :censored: that did it fed the birds my gfs mum had 3 cats poisened her neighbour had 2 poisened another man down the road had his poisened and a young lady up the road had her 3 poisened so 9 cats in all >:( >:( >:(
The police didnt even do anything about the :censored: :censored:
the vet was not sure what they were poisened with but it was not rat poisen
-
Someone poisened my cousin's cat years ago, left some meat on the step which had been laced with something nasty, she came home from school to find the body of her furbabe on the front step :( :( It was their :censored: neighbour but nothing was ever done. Needless to say they now only have indoor furbabes.
On a lighter note, I luuuurve black cats, but then again I'm biased as my boy is adorable :Luv: I would go for personality every time, Max certainly chose me, and I didn't care what colour he was at the time lol :Luv:

When I lived with some friends in a house share we had an all black slinky boy called Salem :)

Aww.
My in laws will eventually get a cat or two right now they have too much fun when we take our three over to visit and are afraid once they get cats we won't be able to bring ours over (which probably would be the case).
But at some point there will be an all black cat named Salem in the house and my father in law will expect it to talk.
;)

Black cats are gorgeous mini panthers :Luv:
When I got Jaffa and Magpie I didn't go with any particular colour in mind, except I quite liked the idea of at least one of them being black and white. Jaffa caught my eye and stole my heart, but not particularly because he was ginger. Both his siblings were b&w. I remember there being 3 tabbies in another pen, but I don't remember what the others were. I certainly wouldn't have been put off a particular cat because it was black.
-
This is my own impression but it always seemed to me blacks and b/w's are among the popular bunch, as many people think a jet black cats "cool", and also due to some famous cartoon characters like Felix and Silvester. My Oliver is mostly white with some points with striped grey/black. In the pictures his coat may look "too common" and that was one of the difficulties his former owner faced when she was looking for an adoption for him. Until I saw him actually I was envisioning either a tortois shell, blue/grey or an orange cat to adopt, but Oliver did somehow "communicated" with me through the notice on the internet which grabbed and got hold of my attention firmly. I do believe cats do communicate with you and adopt YOU (instead of the other way around...), and that colours of their fur is somewhat a secondary issue. It is sad that some people just can't get those signals the prospective kitties sending to them, and too preoccupied with the look of their coat.
-
I am always left with black and black and white kittens out of the litter. If there are tabbies, gingers, torties or greys they always go first. that's probably why we have 6 black cats and 8 black and white cats living with us at the moment.
-

Antifreeze is a very dangerous chemical for cats and unfortuately horrible people know this. Its easy to get a cat to accept it as its sweet.
Its the time of year that people start getting the tins out so please be careful not leave them laying around or spill any. The tiniest amount is lethal.
-
Thanks for posting that Milly ;D
Its funny antifreeze is the first thing I thought of when I read this thread but thought , noooooo it couldnt be!
-
I don't know why people are not as keen on black or b/w ones, but it seems to be the same everywhere. When I got my 2 scaredy cats there was also a b/w one as well and the lady said it is a nightmare trying to rehome these colours. I'll have black cats anytime - they're gorgeous. 3 cheers for black cats :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
-
I've been amazed by how many people have referred to Minnie as "funny looking" and even "ugly" since I adopted her, just because she has asymetric black and white markings. She has gorgeous eyes and a lovely temperament but it chills me to think how many people presumably wouldn't have given her a home. On the other hand, Bella is all black and I only ever get good comments about her.
-
Aww bless her, Same with my gfs mums cate people say hes *ugly* because all around one eye his fur is black but he is such a lovely old cat
-
How can a cat be ugly :(
-
I don't understand how a cats markings can make it ugly. Only shallow people would judge a cat solely on those merits anyway! When I chose Old Mog (or Old Mog chose me) the only thing I really noticed was her sheer desperation to get out of the pen she was in.
-

Unfortunately,it seems the lady was right :(, the other colours get rehomed much easier? And the less people take theb/w or black ones its going to be even more of them sitting and waiting for months or even years in thier little cabins, i just dont understand if one is acat lover what different does it make, but i have to say i see more people with black cats than b/w. :'( or maybe not?
-
Ok we will run a test on Purrs and sees what happens, so watch for my new thread ;D
-

Don't worry, I no longer talk to anyone who's described Minnie as ugly!! She's not anyway ... she's unusual as she has white cheeks and the rest of her face is black apart from an off-centre white spot on her forehead, but I actually find it very cute.
-
She sounds lovely ;D
In our poll so far the black and B&W cats are doing very well and we have loads here on Purrs. We also have loads of others too buts its very well spread.
If you havent entered yet , do so cos its interesting to see what color cats we have. ;D
-
I can't understand it I love black and white cats :Luv:

Would that be Guinness and Widget? They are beautiful.
-
They are so sweet, no wonder you love b/w ones. I want to cuddle them.
-
Ooooops should have put their names ;) Yes it is Yvonne ;D
Guinness is on the left as you look at the photo :)
-
That pic is gorgeous, Ellie :Luv: Guess the subject matter helps - not exactly ugly are they! ;D
-
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ;D
